Problem with daisy chaining HDDs and Time Machine

I have purchased 2 WD My Passport Studio FireWire 2TB HDDs which I have daisy chained to my MacBook Pro.  One I have assigned to be the Time Machine backup the other as an additional data drive.  Both are formatted for Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  I setup Time Machine to backup both the internal and external drive.  When I set it up everything looked OK in Time Machine Preferences, but the daisy chained data drive displayed on the desktop with the Time Machine backup logo and the backup drive displayed as a standard FireWire data drive. However the backup worked successfully and backed everything up to the correct backup drive.
I have since established the following:
1.  If both drives are daisy chained and then plugged in, the data drive shows up with the backup icon and the backup drive shows as a data drive, but Time Machine backs up to the correct drive.  This is the case regardless of what order the drives are daisy chained.
2.  If the backup drive is plugged in on its own it shows up correctly with the backup drive icon.  If the data drive is then daisy chained to the backup drive both drives show up as backup drives.  Time Machine backs up to the correct backup drive.
3. If the data drive is plugged in on its own it shows up incorrectly as the backup drive.  If the backup drive is then daisy chained to the data drive the backup drive shows as a normal FireWire data drive. But Time Machine still backs up to the correct drive.  Exactly the same as case 1 but the drives have been daisy chained after connecting to the MacBook Pro and the result is the same.
4. However if the data drive is plugged in on its own, showing up as the backup drive, Time Machine backs up to the data drive incorrectly.
The first three points are just annoying as the drive icons do not display correctly, although it does indicate to me that Time Machine is confused.  But what I don't like is the fact that I can't just use the external data drive without the backup drive being present.
How do I overcome this problem?

Launch Disk Utility and select one of the volumes in question. Click the Info button in the toolbar. In the Information window that opens, note the Universal Unique Identifier. Do the same with the other volume. Are the identifiers the same?

  • Problems with Retina Macbook pro and time machine backup

I was able to successfully copy over data from myn old macbook to the new pro via a time machine backup.  But now can not get it to use the time machine to start creating backups.  I have tried with two different time machines (home and office) and on both I am getting the same error: unable to create sparse bundle.  Tried updating the airport firmaware reboot etc, any ideas?

    Here is the actual error:
The backup disk image “/Volumes/Test/new mac book.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1).

  • I have an iMac OS X 10.6.8 and have problems with the backup Disk for Time Machine disconnecting itself with the message that I ejected it improperly.. It ejected itself - why?

I have an iMac OS X 10.6.8 and have problems with the backup drive to Time Machine ejecting itself and so does not automatically backup the way it is meant to do. It is connected with an USB cable to my iMac. What could cause this - malfuntioning drive?

The "iLife" apps are not part of any Mac operating system install and are a separate purchase.
Once you get past 10.6.6 you can purchase and download iPhoto, GarageBand and iMovie. iWeb and iDVD have been discontinued.
Snow Leopard 10.6.6 and higher include the App Store application which is what you use to purchase Lion.

  • I'm having a hard time setting up my external hard from with my AirPort Extreme and Time Machine Backups.

I have been using a Mac Mini with an external hard and Time Machine.  I bought an Airport Extreme and have had problem setting up the hard drive using the USB port on the Airport Extreme.  I also just recently bought a Mac Book Air and hope to have both computers back up to the external hard drive using Time Machine and Airport Extreme.  I have been using the optical drive from the Mac mini to load programs into the Mac Book Air.  I think I'm just getting confused in Finder.  I am just not seeing the hard drive.  I ended up plugging the hard drive back into the Mac Mini and that is work fine again.  How do I setting the external hard drive up to the AirPort Extreme and use for both computers?  Or at least to start with the Mac mini.

It's critical to understand that Time Machine (TM) stores backups differently between local and network drives. That would mean the TM backup on your locally attached USB hard drive will not be directly useable when it is connected to the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS). There is a way to copy a local version to a network version, but it is not fool-proof. When you do connect this drive and point TM to it, TM will start a brand new backup, leaving your existing backup as is.
If your current backup is critical to you, you may want to consider getting a second USB drive to attach to the Extreme and use your existing one as a backup ... or use TM's multi-backup process to backup to more than one destination drive alternatively.
So, at this point, you may want to make a decision on how you want to go forward to help provide a solution for you.
To directly answer your question, when you go to select a destination for a Time Machine backup, the drive(s) that show up under "Backup Disks" are those that TM already recognizes and has backed up to. Those listed under "Available Disks" are drives (either local or on the network) that TM can back up to.

  • Airport extreme and external WD HDD and time machine help plz!

Hi, i have used the AEB with my WD external hard drive perfectly before, but after i moved to a different country, i tried to hook it up again, it does comes some problems now, and i think its because of the new updates.
first of all, i have 2 external HD which are connected to each other via firewire, 1 tb and 500 gb wd hard drives. i hook it to my AEB and it doesnt show on my desktop anymore! so my time machinese couldnt find the HD, next is, i used airport utility, and it detects only 1 of the HD not both, so i tried to hook the usb to my laptop and it shows 2 HD connected with 1 usb connection, so i wonder whats going on here, need help, desperately needs to back up thanks!
i want the old school way, which is the plug and play usb then it shows on my desktop via AEB, it worked i know, cuz i did it before, somehow, now it doesnt, im sure its the update, but at the same time, i cant downgrade as well, im sure there is some solution for this auto mount via AEB and time machine issue in this new 7.2.3 firmware thanks!

    Welcome to the discussions!
All you probably really need to know is that +Apple does not support Time Machine backups to a drive attached to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme+ due to likely corruption issues. The odd thing about this issue is that problems won't necessarily occur immediately as most users who have had difficulties with this approach (including me) find that backups work OK...for a time.
The best advice we could offer is that if you decide to try this anyway, make sure that you have another backup plan in place for your important files.
Time Machine backups will be supported if you use the Time Capsule, or if you use a drive that is directly attached to the computer that supports Time Machine.

  • Constant problems with external HD used for time machine.

I have had numerous problems with my backup disk and can't seem to solve the problem... I often get errors with disk not ejecting properly, sometimes when the iMac has gone to sleep, sometimes not. Often the Mac won't recognise the disk when plugged back in (it recognises the other partition though). I can get the disk in disk utility sometimes, but if I run repair disk it finds a lot of errors and tells me it can't fix the disk. I'm told to Backup, format the disk etc.
Running yosemite on a 2008 iMac - disk is Hitachi 1TB usb powered (plugged straight in to iMac). I have prevented spotlight from indexing the HD.
Any advice ideas? Thanks in advance.

Is it hard-wired to the enclosure? If not, examine the connectors and compare with what is available. I doubt that it has a connector that is unique to this particular drive.
If you choose to replace the drive, don't get another manufacturer-branded external. They are often "crippled" so that they can't be used in anything other than the generally cheap enclosure in which they are packaged, or only usable if you re-format them. Here's a comment from a recent Macintouch thread on new Seagate 5TB externals (http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/harddrives/index.html#d23mar2015):
A word of warning for those who want to rip out their drive. If you have data on it, it will only be read by Seagate controllers such as its original case or the GoFlex adapters. If you stick it in something like an IcyDock, it cannot be read and require a reformat. If you used it with another controller, it cannot be read when you put it back on the Seagate controllers.
A good quality enclosure, such as the OWC Mercury aluminum cases, is a good investment. You can choose the drive you install, and you usually get a better drive warranty that way.

  • What is the problem with Western Digital HDD and OS X.9?

I received an email from Western Digital saying that OS X.9 could cause my files on my WD drives to be erased and to unplug all my WD drives until a fix is done. Is this a real problem and if so when will Apple get the fix out. I have joibs I have to get out to clients and this is a major problem for me.

Western Digital has found that their applications have got serious compatibility problems with OS X Mavericks, and they have to be updated to make them compatible with Mavericks.
Until then, keep the OS X version you have got. This is a Western Digital problem and this is why your main computer shouldn't be upgraded just after the release of a new Mac OS X version

  • Mayor Problems with new installation / restoring from time machine

I encountered several problems while setting up my mac mini, 1,66 Ghz, 60 GB from the start. The following problems occured:
1.) Installing 10.6 upon existing 10.6.4 caused scanner driver to fail. I was unable to reinstall it, so i decided to reinstall 10.6. from the start
2.) clean install of 10.6., after finishing i could not install iWorks. There was an error like "com.apple.installer.pagecontroller" ant installation terminated. With MS Office 2004 I had a problem, too: An error with _ds.store occured, I could not even copy the files to my harddisk. I thought, it might be the optical drive, so i took an external one which caused the same problems. I proceeded to 10.6.4 by update, but that did not make it better.
3.) next clean install (two tries wirth different backups) by my backup from time machine. It worked until it rebootet. I ended in a blue screen with every now and then the rotating cirlce, but could not proceed any further.
4.) tried to repair rights hat no effect. The harddisk is reportet to be functional.
5.) Back to the roots, i thought, installing 10.4. which came on the grey disks with the mini. I encountered the same problems after installing, furthermore, on trying to install flash 10.1 it could not open the .dmg-file.
6.) Installed Win XP. All seems funktional.
So, please, can anyone tell me, what is wrong with my mac mini? to me, it seems to be a problem with hardware, but i cannot verivy this. Please help me.

Did you use a Leopard Install disc to restore a Snow Leopard backup? If so, that's the problem. You must use a Snow Leopard Install disc to restore a Snow Leopard backup.
If you did use the right disc, were you restoring backups from the same Mac?
If so, were you having problems before all this started? If you were, it's possible those problems corrupted your installation of OSX, and that was copied to the backups.

  • Help with AT&T DSL and Time Machine

I recently moved and had to switch internet providers to AT&T DSL and am having trouble getting the modem to work with my Time Machine.  I have searched through previous discussions and have noted others having the same problems, but none of the suggested solutions have worked for me.
I have a Westell modem.  AT&T suggests that to hook up a third-party router/device, you need to configure the modem so that "PPP is on the computer, gateway, router".  Then you have to hook up your device and configure it accordingly.  I have done as AT&T suggests, but when I try to configure my Time Machine I get a message that I have no internet connection.
My Time Machine is already configured to be a bridge device as I previously had internet service through the cable company where I used to live.  Shouldn't this just plug and play with that configuration (as was the case when I had internet through the cable company)?
Can anybody walk me through, step-by-step, how to configure this properly?

Suggest that you perform a Factory Default Reset to clear out old and likely conflicting settings and start over with the configuration.
If you can connect using AirPort Utility - Manual Setup, click the Base Station menu at the uppermost top of the computer screen in the same menu bar as the Apple icon. Select Restore Default Settings
Temporarily, connect an Ethernet cable from your Mac to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule. Check again to be sure that the Ethernet cable from the modem is plugged into the WAN port (world icon)
Open AirPort Utility - Click Continue to follow the guided setup to "Create a wireless network". Choose the Connect Using PPPoE option when that option appears. You will need to re-enter the PPPoE connection info as you did before....Account Name, Password, etc.
Continue to follow the prompts. Restart the modem again after you have completed the setup on the Time Capsule
I have double checked the setup here using the same configuration that you have and everything works fine.
You can disconnect the Ethernet cable from the computer to the TC once you have things working although it would be an excellent idea to use this same connection for your first Time Machine backup as it will go 3-5 times faster than wireless.

  • I am having problems with a slow Firewire 400 Time machine back up., I am having problems with a slow Firewire 400 Time machine back up.

I have tried rebooting my mac after clearing the incomplete backup from time machine (TM).
I don't have any anti-virusware on my mac.
    I have tried quiting finder.
None of these things have improved my TM back up speed.
Considering that I am using a 400mbps firewire and that it has been runing TM for 3 hrs, I should have more than 5 gb out of 194gb out of the way.
Can anyone suggest a solution to this problem?
    Thanks KW

  • Network Attached HDD and Time Machine

Is it possible to use TM with a network HDD? If so, how? I've tried setting up TM and it doesn't recognize any HDDs. I have a Western Digital My Book World Edition I HDD that is attached to my D-Link router via ethernet.

the only supported network backups are to a Time Capsule. It also works with a drive attached to an Airport Extreme Base station. There are hacks to make it work with other NAS drives but you use those at your own risk and without any guarantees.

  • NAS drive recommendations for use with MPB, PS3, APX and time machine?

    Hello,
I am looking to get a 1TB NAS drive and then partition about 400mb for time machine and the other 600mb will basically serve as a media/itunes server.
Wondering what recommendations you have and anything to look for in the product details? Is bittorrent an important feature? usually I just use the client on my computer and save to an external drive but maybe thats inefficient.
I don't need raid, try to keep the cost down
    thanks

Hi Rhett, if you post this in the 'Time Machine' category, you might get faster response and plenty suggestions.

  • Use Time Capsule as extern HDD and time machine?

Hi, I own a Time Cap. 1 Gb and use it for Time Machine, but I also want to use it as en extra Harddisk.. But I don' t get a harddisk icon on my desktop.. Så how do I get acess to it?
    Thanks
    Lasse

open Airport Utility (assuming you run a Mac not Windows)
two scenarios; select Finder preferences under General and check box "show connected servers on desktop"
    1) your local network use GO function, found top file menu then select "connect to server" you'll see a blank window type afp://your router ip address should be number such as 10.0.1.1
    2) using the internet because you are not near your local network, open Airport Utility write down your internet tab ip address example such as 68.43.46.123
Also using Airport Utility under Disks/File Sharing check box "enable file sharing" and "share disk over wan port." When using afp command such as first scenario use your internet ip address
Personally I have used this afp internet connection when I was in Pittsburgh, Pa over the past holidays to get a few of my files off my TC network in Detroit, Mi.

I`d like to get current date and time using oracle.jbo.domain.Date method getCurrentDate(), but it always return current date and 12:00:00. I also need to get the current time.

I think you should use java.sql.Timestamp domain.
