Problem with default program to open certain files.

My MacBook came with a trial version of Microsoft Office built in. Having already purchased a full version, I uninstalled the trial and installed the full version. The problem I am having is that when I go to open a Word document, it tries to open it with the trial version of Word that is no longer there. I tried changing the default program in Finder but it keeps switching back, thus giving me errors every time I try to open a Word document. If you could help it would be greatly appreciated. If you need more information, let me know.

Pre-wife is not a term I am familiar with but I guess I catch your meaning .
It sounds like your Launch Services database may be corrupt. Try downloading a copy of Cocktail (shareware, but I think you can try it) and in the System pane, select Misc tab and click on the button to rebuild the Launch Services database. In rare cases, this database (which the Finder uses to maintain file associations) can get messed up.

  • Making an application the default program to open certain files

    Hello,
I have a stupid question that has been bugging me for a long time.
I have installed parallels to use windows and when i used its office excel, it prompted me if I want to open the files with window's excel; which I did. Then now everytime I open an excel file on my mac HD, it starts parallels to launch its excel to open. I tried the option of open with "other" and select my mac's excel but this only applies on the particular file. I uninstalled parallels to avoid this problem and it still tries to locate parallel's excel which no longer exists.
So I have everytime to select the file and use the open with option which is very unpractical.
This applies for any other application so is there an effective way to change the "default" application that opens certain files? There must be a way to do that!!!!
    Please help.

    Hi Carol,
    Do the following:
    1. Click once on any Excel file.
    2. From the menubar select File->Get Info
    3. In the "Open with" section click on the drop down menu and select the Microsoft Excel, ensuring it's the Apple Mac version that's located in your Applications folder. If it's not listed, select "other" and then navigate to the application.
    4. Click on the "Change All" button and confirm.
That's it. Everytime you double click on that file type, it will open in the Application of your choice.

  • Changing default program to open a file with Regedit

    Hi
Is there a way to change the default program to open a file with another program using a Rededit key. I would like to change the program to open a .g3pp file with vlc instead of media player cause it doesn't read it.
    Thanks

Why make life hard for yourself? Just right-click any .g3pp-file, then left-click "Open with". That's all!

  • How do I set Adobe Flash Player as the default program to open SWF files?

    Basic Overview
I have this working fine at my home laptop, however I need this working for projects at school.
Whenever I want to open an SWF file at home, I simply double click it and open it in Adobe Flash Player (Adobe Flash Player 10.0 r22) and I have no problems!
However, when I am at school I have to run SWF files within Internet Explorer, Adobe Flash Player IS installed, but the SWF files are not opened in that directly, they are opened within Internet Explorer.
    At Home
If I right click an SWF file at home and select "Open With" and then "Choose Default Program...", Adobe Flash Player is already there under the name 'Adobe Flash Player 10.0 r22', so I can simply select it as the default. (On my home laptop)
    At School
At school if go to "Open With" and then "Choose Default Program...", Adobe Flash Player IS NOT there, only Internet Explorer and some other programs in the other programs box. (On my school laptop)
    Question
How can I assign Adobe Flash Player as the default program for opening SWF files (on my school laptop)? If I select "Browse..." and go to C:\WINDOWS\System32\Macromed\Flash there is no file with a description of 'Adobe Flash Player 10.0 r22', is the file for the actual program located somewhere else or have I just no looked properly in the folder?
I really need these files opening in Adobe Flash Player directly and not in Internet Explorer (I know you can set the view to 100% and have it sized correctly)
Thanks you to everyone who helps!
-Charlie! (Yes I know I don't need to write this in a forum)

The standard Flash Player is a browser add-on, and not a standalone player.  So what actually opens when you open an SWF file at home?  Flash Player Projector?
If so, you also need to download it at your school, from http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html, then do the file association.

  • How do I change the default program that opens .acsm files?

I am borrowing library eBooks to read on my Sony Reader.  I want to ensure that Adobe Digital Editions is the default program to open .acsm files, but am not sure how to do that.  Thanks for the help!

Right (control) click on the .acsm file > select Open With > then select Adobe Digital Editions.
Likewise you can select all of files in a folder with Edit > Select All > then Get Info and set them all to Open with: Adobe Digital Editions or whatever.

  • How do I set Excel as default program to open CSV files?

I am using a program that creates CSV files which I wish to open with Excel. Currently, the CSV files just open as a raw data sheet on my computer. Support folks said I didn't have Excel as my default program to open CSV files; How do I do this?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

You can only set an automatic download action for CSV to open with Excel is a website sends such a file with a supported MIME type. In other cases you need to select the application to use. You can set the default application via Windows Explorer to make Firefox offer that as first choice (right click a CSV file > Open With).

  • Setting Photoshop CC 2014 as my "Default Program" to open JPEG files in Windows 7

I just installed Photoshop CC 2014 on my Windows 7 computer. I had set Photoshop as my "Default Program" to open up JPEG files. Now whenever I double-click a JPEG file, Photoshop CC will launch instead of Photoshop CC 2014. I have noticed that the executable files for all versions of Photoshop are "Photoshop.exe" (no wonder Windows gets confused). If I changed the name of the executable file for Photoshop CC 2014 to something like "Photoshop2014.exe" then Windows will let me choose the program as my "Default Program" to open up a JPEG, however this makes it impossible for me to open up files in Lightroom. Lightroom will default back to Photoshop CC.
I have changed the name of the executable file for Photoshop CC 2014 back to "Photoshop.exe" and renamed all the executable files for my legacy versions of Photoshop. This still does not work.
Do I need to make some types of change in the registry?

This is from the post at this site: Re: Adobe CS6 file associations are all messed up
Just change the directory to the correct EXE for cc 2014 and you should be good.

Here is a registy fix for Win7 machines to the file association problem.
    This from TinusHDCA user:
I installed Photoshop CS6, then found CS5 was still there. I thought, hey, I don't need CS5 anymore, so I uninstalled CS5. then I found out that Photoshop was no longer available in 'Open with' when right-clicking an image...
    So I went into the Registry, HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\Photoshop.exe\shell\open\command, and changed the (Default) from "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5 (64 Bit)\Photoshop.exe" "%1" to "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS6 (64 Bit)\Photoshop.exe" "%1" (so changed CS5 to CS6) - and now I see 'Adobe Photoshop CS6' in my 'Open with' list when right-clicking an image...

  • Setting InDesign CC as default program to open indd files

I have both CS6 and CC for inDesign.  I need to keep CS6 for a plug-in which is not available yet for CC.  indd files are opening with CS6 as default, even if CC is open.  I have tried the Open with feature, and browse to the CC program, but when I click on it, my computer doesn't recognize it as a possibility for opening CC.  I have uninstalled CS6 and CC became available as the default, but as soon as I put CS6 back on, no dice.  Any ideas?

Following steps has worked for me (on Windows 7)
    Here is my method...
    1. Find out your InDesign CS6 executable program file (usually: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS6\InDesign.exe")
    2. Rename the file (ex.: "InDesign.exe.old"). This version of InDesign will be temporary disable to run.
    3. Right click on any .indd file and select "Open with..." in the menu.
    4. Now you can see that  the default program InDesign CS6 is no more available in the top applications list.
    5. Make sure that the "Always use..." option is checked and browse to InDesign CC executable program file (usually: "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CC (64 bit)\InDesign.exe")
Now all your .indd files will open by default with InDesign CC.
    6. Rename your InDesign CS6 executable program (previously named: "InDesign.exe.old") to "InDesign.exe" to make it back enable to run.
After this last step, InDesign CC still remain the default program to run .indd files but both versions of InDesign (CS6 and CC) would be now available under the "Open with..." menu. Than you will be able to select what version of InDesign you wish to use to open your .indd file and/or select your prefered version to be the default version.

  • Adding a default program to open a file doesn't work

After upgrading Adobe Photoshop cs3 to cs5, I select a jpeg image file and select "open with", looking for the application.  Not there, so I browse to find the application (CS5) and select it.  It does not add the application to the "open
with" choices.  I was able to add Adobe Bridge to the choices.  Adobe support worked with me several times and says the problem is with the W7 account permissions.  Any ideas on this?  W7 Professional 64 bit

    Hi,
In order to change the default program, you need to know the file type. For example, .mp3 or .wav, or .docx.
Instead of going to "set your default programs" , go to "associate a file type or protocol with a program. Click on the file extension and just click change program.
If that does not work, this problem maybe due to the fact that the program has not registered itself on installation. A program typically registers itself on installation by means of a new entry in the system registry. It is possible to manually include
registry entries provided you know what and where.

  • How do you globally change the default program for opening photo files?

I want to adjust my system so that when I double click a photo file, Preview does not automatically launch.  I work in Photoshop all the time and would prefer that it be the default program for pictures.  I have already changed the "when you insert a picture CD" command in CD's & DVD's in System preferences but this does not have any effect on when I double click on a picture file to open it; Preview always launches and opens the picture there.  That automatic opening behavior is fine but I need it to happen in Photoshop.

Assuming your pictures are all .jpg files: select any .jpg by clicking once on it in the Finder, then press Command+I to Get Info about it. In the Open With: section of the Get Info window, change the preferred application from Preview to Photoshop, then click the Change All button.
Now any .jpg file that you double-click will open in Photoshop.

  • Cannot make CS6 the default program to open nef files on a windows 7 computer.

On my Windows 7 computer, I right click a nef file and select Open With. CS6 is not listed. I browse to the CS6 icon and select it and OPEN. Nothing happens. It does not get added to the list. CS5 worked as it should. I have submitted this on a Windows forum and am getting nowhere. All updates for Adobe and Windows are installed. I can open a nef file from within PS. It is only when trying to open a file from a folder that I have a problem.
This problem is solved. The solution was to uninstall and re-install CS6. (deactivate before uninstalling)

I would recommend contacting Adobe Tech Support for this as playing with registry is quite dangerous , your computer may crash.
Still if you want to try , first create the System Restore point and Backup your Registry , just incase something goes wrong.
In regedit: Navigate to Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications and find your .exe name.
Navigate under its name to shell>open>command. In the Default change its location to the actual location of the executable, hit okay and then try and reassociate the file type as you normally would.
