Problem with desktop icon moving

Whenever I restart my computer, the "Macintosh HD" icon moves to become the bottom icon out of my list of icons, leaving the top right space empty where it usually should be. This has been happening for about a week after having my computer for three months.
Any idea why this is happening?
thanks.

Welcome To Discussions aburi!
Positioning Desktop icons, too close to the edge of the screen, will cause them to reposition themselves on restart.
Positioning them too close to each other, will cause this as well.
Depending on how many you have displayed, and the size of your screen, the Size of the icons, as well as the Text size & Label position can also factor in. Experiment with these settings.
My Desktop icons do not reposition themselves, and this is how I have my Desktop View Options set.
Icon size: 32 x 32
Text size: 12 pt
Label position: Bottom
I have none of the following options selected.
Snap to grid
Show item info
Show icon preview
Keep arranged by
A different configuration may work for you. Experiment with the options until you find something suitable.
Click on an open area of your Desktop.
From the Finder's Toolbar, position your cursor over "View" and pull down to "Show View Options", and click. Or use the Command + J keys.

  • Problem with desktop icons

    Hi,
Hope someone can help, my desktop icons have turned into these wierd square buttons with a grey background - The icons are no longer draggable but simply work as buttons.
Basically everything that I dump on the desktop turns into one these grey square buttons.
I've never seen this before - maybe it's a simple solution to solve.
It quite suddenly began doing this when I still had OS 9.0 - can't remember the circumstances since it was quite a while ago...I thought the problem might have gone away when I updated to 9.2.2, but it's still there.
    Any suggestions would be welcome.
    cheers

    OS9er...
Have you attempted to change your buttons back to icons?

  • Problem with desktop icons on lollipop

After update on lollipop i transferred my games and some of my apps to SD card but the problem is when i restart my phone all icons of those app are deleted from desktop and need to reput them again, its very annoying

That's one of the perils of apps been moved to your SD card - The phone boots up before the SD card is mounted so any icons associated with the SD card won't show and they may also take longer to show in the app draw also

  • FINDER disappears, along with desktop icons, when I plug in external drive

    Hello, All:
FINDER disappears, along with desktop icons, when I plug in an external memory card from my Nikon camera. This also happens regardless of which USB port I plug it in to. It didn't happen when I installed Leopard two weeks ago, but happens all the time now.
Interestingly, the desktop icons (hard drives and files) DO show up when I open any software program and try to open up a file. The hard drives and files show up in the Open File windows.
    Thank you,
    Jon

THANK YOU! I've been having the same problem, and the solution you linked to worked perfectly for me. Somehow, my computer's sharing name had been deleted. Once I put that back in the file sharing preference I was able to reconnect my external drive without all Hades breaking loose.
This problem came on the heels of an aborted attempt to use a new Time Capsule (not ready for prime time) which I had to drive 50 miles to take back and replace with a new WD My Book -and I was afraid I was going to have to repeat the trip to take it back as well.

  • Strange problem with desktop

Hi, I have a very strange problem with desktops and dashboards something else. For example, when I am on desktop 2 and i go to desktop 1, when I click with the mouse on it, it goes again to desktop 2. or when I am on desktop 1 and I go to ddashboard, it returns again to desktop 1 when i click to something in the dashboard.
but, if i am on desktop 3, and i go to desktop 1 throguh desktop 2, there is no problem. the same if i go from desktop 2 to dashboard.
I hope i've been clear enough to let you understand this... explanation =P
    Anyone can help?

My system has started "freezing". Actually, usually when I'm browsing the net, Chromium stops loading pages. Conky stops updating, and usually I can't switch to another programs. I can't start xkill from menu, menu opens but nothing starts. If I run "ls" etc in Terminal, nothing happens
I can however control+alt+F1 to CLI, but if I try to login nothing happens. If doesn't help even if I kill X (I started it with startx). And if I don't kill X, I can't go back from CLI with control+alt+F7, there's just a black screen.
I'm using Nvidia drivers also, and XFCE4. This started happening some time ago, I think I was using Gnome2 back then. And I have updated my system, and this has happened at least with 3 kernel versions. There's nothing on logs. Well, actually, there's "TCP: Possible SYN flooding on port 6881. Sending cookies" errors on everything.log. But those don't happen when system freezes. And sometimes Chromium stops loading pages but other programs don't freeze, I think it's a problem with cache or something.
Not really sure if this everything happens because of Chromium. I think I'm gonna switch back to Firefox and see what happens. Usually I'm running Chromium, Opera (use it just for a couple of pages), couple of Terminals and Kaffeine.

  • WINDOWS INSTALLER PROBLEM WITH DESKTOP MANAGER

Please help!! I am a user of the Blackberry Desk Top Manager, running under Windows XP Service Pack 4.5. I recently downloaded the latest version of Desk Top Manager and I am getting the following error: - Flashing intermittently, whilst running the newly downloaded Desktop Manager - "Windows Installer Preparing to Install". I have removed the programme, downloaded it again from Blackberry's website and run my Windows updates to no available. I have now been advised that I must format my entire computer and reload Windows, which seems to be a rather onerous solution, as I have been using Blackberry's Synchronisation Programme for over a year successfully before this took place. I should appreciate it if you would let me know how this problem on my IBM Think Pad Laptop can be cured.

    Hi all..
I am having the same problem with desktop software 6, but my problem is more like this..
    http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/KB19300
The Windows Installer pop-up during installation and cannot continue, it seems that windows installer 4.5 is the cause, but I cannot uninstall windows installer 4.5 because many of my programs were using this..
In this knowledge base solution it says to run BlackBerry Desktop Software.msi, but on BlackBerry Desktop Software 6, it need to run from setup.exe and cannot continue.. so I cannot install desktop software 6 on my computer, but I am able to install older version desktop software ie. version 4.2 to version 5.
I think that I am gonna reply here instead of making new thread about windows installer 4.5 and Desktop Software 6, please move if I did wrong.
    PS. Bifocals..
The link you provided is missing. Or it just back to BlackBerry Technical Solution Center page and I tried searching the KB13781 with no success.
Please if there is other link that may be good for my problem.
    Thank you very much.
Hi ihalimsujanto and welcome to the forums!
My first concern is that you do have a version of desktop manager that you can maintain your device and PIM data with, do you?
Please post back with as much detail as possible regarding your hardware and software setup.
Also post what steps you have taken to resolve the issue. The more detail we have the better we can help you. I'll reread KB 19300 and find what happened to my broken link.
    Thanks.

  • Problem with Desktop Shortcuts and icons

I have a customer with a Windows 8.1 machine, all up to date and no virus issues,
Her Desktop icons display the file size not the name.
This happened suddenly with no known reason, she did have some screen problems (hardware) which meant she needed a new screen, but that was not problem.
However no matter what we change (and we have been everywhere!!) I cannot find anywhere where you can change the properties displayed!.
We have disk checked in case of some kind of corruption, we have created a new user, that 's the same, changed file/folders properties fonts etc. etc. nothing seems get the files names back?

    Hi,
Did this issue occur for all desktop icon or specific one?
It sounds like it might be caused by the video card. Update the video card driver and rename a file kindly to check the result.
If the issue persists, following the guide below to rebuild the icon cache

  • Desktop icons moving and growing in size

We just purchased a MacBook Pro 15", 2.8GHz. I transferred all my files from my old MacBook via FireWire. Everything seems to work fine. The only problem I have is that my desktop items keep moving after I organize them the way I want them. And they also growing in size each time. I have only about 8 icons on my desktop and they take up almost the whole screen. Any suggestions to keep them from omving around? Thank you very much!

FGI_Webmaster: Close or minimize any open windows on your desktop so the desktop is exposed. Click once on it to make the Finder the active application. Place the tips of your thumb and forefinger on the middle of the trackpad and slowly move them closer together, then farther apart. See what happens to your desktop icons? This "pinch to zoom" trackpad gesture is probably responsible for the oversized icons on your desktop. I suspect you've been doing it accidentally without noticing. Getting used to the trackpad and avoiding having two fingers in contact with it when you don't mean to is the solution.

  • Problem: Frozen desktop Icons

ok so I have a Lenovo X301 6477 and for some reason recently icons that I place on my desktop cannot be removed/found, even though they are clearly on the desktop. Some of the Icon pictures have disappeared or replaced with blank page icons. Anytime I try to delete them by recycle been. I get the message windows cannot open file. I cant rename the file either. Can someone help me thanks
this computer has no viruses and I have not have had any other trouble with it

Sounds like you have problems with your registry. Do the simple solution first. Use Microsoft's System Restore. Follow this path to access it:
    Start->Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select the option to restore your computer to an earlier time. The idea here is to select a date on the calendar and to choose any restore point prior to the time that your problems started. Once complete, the unit will shut and reload Windows to an earlier date.
NOTE: System restore monitors the registry files.. it does not monitor any program files.
For your own knowlege, you can learn more about system restore by reading this link:

    Thank you

    Matt,
    thank you thank you!
I just spent 3 hours searching for what I'd done. I knew it was simple and I couldn't make it stop. Well at least it gave me a reason to do a software update. Not to mention resetting my pram and learning more than I wanted to know about my video card. Now I can go to sleep tonight happy.

  • Glitch with desktop icons including cursor

How to describe it? How to get rid of it?
Let's see - on my iMac desktop in Finder. Desktop icons including dock icons, pull down menu words and the cursor are covered by a square shadow of "bits" that look like rows of lines. A folder icon on the desktop is covered by a rectangle approx. 1.5" wide and 1" high. It's composed of approx. 12 rows of lines across and 6 rows of lines down. Particularly annoying is the square of lines that is attached to the cursor. This square goes along with the cursor.
    Has anyone seen this before?
It's a glitch that could be a bug of some sort or have I made a change in Preferences that I didn't notice?
    Any help is appreciated!

  • HT1624 Problem with desktop

Hi Users, for no apparent reason I can't move files to my desktop. Any suggestions about which app to open the desktop?  David

After upgrading, my desktop icons disappeared and I couldn't add new files to the desktop. I have multiple desktops. I deleted all the desktops but one, created new desktops and then deleted the original desktop. That fixed all my icon and adding to desktop problems.
