Problem with differencing VHDx in hyper-v 2012 R2

hi friends
in my windows 2012 R2 Datacenter, i deployed a windows server 2012 R2 Datacenter VM ( i selected its hard disk be Dynamically expanding VHDX) & installed OS & then i syspred it & turned it off & removed that VM from hyper-v snap-in.
now i tried to use that as a parent VHDX for Differencing child VHDXs for a new VM.
so i created a new VM & created a differencing VHDx which has that is parent.
the problem is when i turn on the VM, its doesn't boot & i get the following strange error:
i also checked event viewer for all hyper-v nodes in Application & services logs but there is no error & all events describe that VM has started successfully.
what to it can be related?
i have done the same scenario for win 2008 R2 enterprise VMs (VHD hard disk) many times & there was never such problem.
is it isue related to VHDX hard disks?
help please
thanks in advanced

The config looks OK for this Gen 1 VM, except the odd memory configuration.
Can you look up the Hyper-V logs on the host:
particularly hypervisor/operational and VMMS/admin?
You can use Powershell to collect the logs if you like.
Here's a sample script. After running the script to load the function you can run:
Get-HVEventLog -Computername MyHVHost-Days 7

Sam,
i corrected the memory settings & assigned static memory as 1024 MB.
there was two blocks of scripts in that website, i don't which of them i must run.
i verified my event viewer as i had done earlier, i the following are the only events which are are logged in all hyper-v related notes:
hyper-v-hyperVisor node:
Hyper-V successfully created a new partition (partition 3).
Hyper-v-synthnic node:

  • Strange problem with virtual machines backup (Hyper-V 2012R2)

    Hi
I have a strange problem with backup of virtual machines in one of my Hyper-V environments. Let me describe how does it looks like: There are two physical servers - HP DL360 G8. They are used as hosts for four virtual machines - domain controllers in two domains.
Each of them runs one DC in every domain. I've configured backup "inside" every virtual machine (with Windows Server Backup tool), in its operating system, because domain controllers should have their system state, regularly backuped, etc. Backup
is made on the network share - all machines to the same server as destination. And now the case - two virtual server are backuped as expected - the operation takes 3 - 4 minutes and is always succeded. But in case of two remaining it looks as below:
    - Backup operation starts (is scheduled).
    - Volume shadow copy is made.
    - The first partition of VM starts to be copied. It's Windows 2012 R2 Generation2 VM, so it has EFI, Recovery and C: partition. EFI is as first and at this moment backup stucks for a 2-3 hours! Progress of copying is 0%. After for example 3 hours this partition
is completed and starts the next (disk C:). And again - it freezes for a few hours and suddenly is pushed. As a result the backup is made successfully, but it takes for example 10 hours.
Both "dodgy" VMs are on separated hosts. All four of them were installed in the same time. I tried to change destination to locally connected disk, but no result. It's interesting as well, that after rebooting VM, the first backup is made normally,
but every next has described problem again. In EventLog I can't find any errors, I don't know how to diagnose such case precisely, etc. Have you got idea what can cause such behaviour or where on the server should I look for some hints?
    Thanks
    Marcin

    Hi Marcin,
    >>that after rebooting VM, the first backup is made normally, but every next has described problem again.
    It shouldn't happen .
To narrow this issue down , Please try to backup an Gen1 VM and check the result .

  • VM Machines not communicating with each other on Hyper-V 2012

    In Hyper-V 2012 on Server 2012 I have created two VM's Server 2008 64-bit & Server 2012 64-bit.
The problem is both VM's are not communicating with each other.

    Hello,
seems this belongs to the Hyper-V networking configuration settings. Please ask this in http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home?forum=winserverhyperv
and also describe how you have the network settings configured in the Hyper-V MMC.

  • App+IIS server role, WCF data problems with Shrepoint Foundation 2013 install on 2012 R2

    Hi
I am having tremendous trouble installing Sharepoint Foundation on a Windows 2012 R2 domain controller.
The server has just been added to our domain, promoted and this is the first piece of software I am trying to install. I had run Windows Update after joining it to the domain and before making it a member server before it was promoted.
I had real problems getting AppFabric to install but that is now done. However when I run the Sharepoint prerequisite installer (As Administrator) a results screen is displayed stating there was a configuration error during the installation of the Application
Server Role, Web Server (IIS) Role. It also says that the installation of Microsoft WCF Data Services 5 was skipped.
I manually added the Application Server Role.
I have manually installed WCF Data Services, which was successful.
    I have used this page
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2765260/en-gb to try and get around the Application Server and IIS Roles error. The hotfix quoted on that page is not applicable to this system. I had to run a DISM command to create an image from the OS installation media
before the Powershell commands would work.
Next, I rebooted the server and ran the prerequisite installer again as recommended. However, exactly the same problems are reported.
Can anyone help me with this, please?
    Thanks.

SharePoint is not supported to be installed on a Domain Controller (see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2764086). You'll need to find another server.
But regardless, with SharePoint 2013, you need SharePoint 2013 with SP1 in order to install on Server 2012 R2.

  • Problem with Installing and Configuring MS Server 2012 Essentials trial and MS Server 2012 Standard trial

My name is John Grace.  I have been an MS customer for years.  Never before in my experiences with MS up to this point have I experienced such POOR product support.  Your pre-sales agents have no knowledge to offer with pre-sales config or
install issues, your support personnel are trained not to provide any reasonable help with even minor questions and concerns helping to make sure your trial experiences are progress and successful, your product support Mgrs show lack luster concern if you
need some technical direction.  The first thing that is asked is do you have a support contract or credit card for this session.  Now, if I am evaluating products a support contract should not be necessary as you should want customers to have good
    outcomes with their trials.
I have been trying to configure test servers with the above mentioned products for the past 6 days with no success.  Each install is different and the configurations some times work and some times they don't.  I reach out for help in your forums,
etc., and am still at square one.
This frustrating and breeds a lack of confidence in your organization.  When Bill Gates was in charge I experienced none of the nonsense today.
I have identified bugs and issues to your product teams and they gladly accept these.  But when help is needed...it is send us an email type attitude.  I have 8 8 core servers running  windows 2008 server R2 slated for upgrading to windows
2012 server, and more after that.  If I don't get the trial software to work, the upgrades are terminated.
Please give me some help or you will loose me as a customer, and customers that I installed systems for.

    Hi again Alan,
Thanks for the reply, i have however not been able to find any viable hotfix from MS addressing this problem so far. I only found the QFE for 2008 R2, but this is not applicable in my enviroment.
Sadly, we are experiencing the same issue with the 2008 R2 server as print server now. So the problem seems to be with the 2012 R2 RDS servers.
We have been able to narrow it down to a probable cause though:
The issue seems to be the cause of Client Side Rendering, even if it is disabled on the shared printers. We are seeing heavy bloating in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Print\Providers\Client Side Rendering Print Provider
The same printers are listed multiple times in subkeys for each user-SID.
The print server is listed twice under the 'Servers' key, once with just the hostname and once with the fqdn. Benath these two many of the printers are also listed multiple times.
Consequences are that printers are showing as clones for the users and they cannot set them as default printer. If they remove the printer manually, it just reappears. Setting a delete on the shared printer through GPP does not work either.
The only manual workaround we have found working is to delete the entire "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Print\Providers\Client Side Rendering Print Provider" key on the
terminal server in question, and then restart the print spooler. This fixes the problem for the user, but once they start logging off and on again, the bloating of the registry is at it once more - and the problems following with it.
In an enviroment with 70+ printers and 15 RDS servers, spread on 3 different farms, it's not a good solution though.
    Any ideas?

This problem reproduced on all my web-servers (Windows Server 2012 Std). How can I fix these problems

    Hi,
Windows update error 0x80070020 can occur if a program is interfering with the automatic update process.
Restart your computer or restart your computer in safe mode with network, then try to install the updates. Detailed information you may reference the link below(this applies also to Windows Server 2012 ):
You receive error 0x80070020 when you use the Windows Update Web site or the Microsoft Update Web site to install updates
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883825/en-us
If the problem still exits, open Run, type %windir% and hit
Enter, find a text file named WindowsUpdate, uploaded the log file.

  • Problems with E531 network drivers in SCCM 2012 R2

We are having some serious issues with SCCM 2012 R2 operating system deployment (Windows 7) and the Thinkpad Edge E531 laptop - network drivers are not being applied during the imaging process. Do SCCM driver packages exist for this laptop?
I downloaded the ethernet drivers manually from here, extracted the files from the executable, imported the drivers into SCCM (it found them), and created a driver package for this model. I also added the drivers to the boot images.
I do not have an issue during the PXE phase, it is only during the Windows phase - and the laptop is unable to join the domain because it does not have network drivers.
In the OSD Task Sequence, I have tried both the auto-apply device drivers rule (default), and creating a special rule for Lenovo E531 with the WMI query: SELECT * FROM Win32_ComputerSystem WHERE Model LIKE "%6885YU%" . The task sequences all work perfectly on virtual machines, so I am fairly certain this is a driver issue. I have tried Windows 7 x86, x64, and Windows 8.1 x64.
Any thoughts are welcome - I am new to this particular school district and have never deployed Lenovo in my previous environments. I am about to select a model for this year's laptop purchases and at this point, I am backing away from Lenovo due to this issue.

We do not create SCCM driver packs for the Edge line of products.  As an alternative you can use Update Retriever to download hardware drivers for a selected model and then use the Export feature to create a folder containing the source files for the drivers.  This can then be used in the Driver Import Wizard which will locate the INF files and only import the files referenced by the INF files.
You mention you are using SCCM 2012 R2.  This means you should be using the Windows ADK for 8.1 which also means your boot images should be using Windows PE 5.  For your boot images you should be using the Windows 8.1 driver (http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/herr01ww.exe)
In your OSD task sequence you need to be deploying Windows 7 drivers (http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/her101ww.exe)
Make sure you keep these separate.  Meaning you should have a driver package for the Windows 7 drivers that you reference in an Apply Drivers task and this package should not include the Windows 8.1 drivers.  Add just the 8.1 drivers to the boot image.

  • Problems with Hyper-V machine management

Hello i am having a problem with my server 2008 hyper-v server. I have 2 virtual server on the hyperv, one is SBS2008 virtual server and the other is terminal server. ive had power failure a couple of days ago and from then i cant set anything on my VMs...My
VMs actually work when i restart the host server but then i cant do anything accept turning off the machine. The host server is in a domain of the sbs2008.
When i click settings on the machine i just get an error:
Cannot access the settings for the selected virtual machine.
    Content
The computer 'localhost' failed to perform the requested operation.
I checked event viewer and i got this error:
    Event ID: 14050
    Source: Hyper-V-VMMS
Failed to register service principal name.
I tried restarting the host server it didnt helped. For my TS server i created a new VM and on that vm everything works normal, but i cant delete the old VM because i got the same error as mentioned above. Did somebody had the same problem?

    Hi Sir,
    >>I tried restarting the host server it didnt helped. For my TS server i created a new VM and on that vm everything works normal, but i cant delete the old VM because i got the same error as mentioned above. Did somebody had the same problem?
First I would suggest you to check if the DNS setting is correct (it should be the DC's IP address)
Then please try to use Local Administraotr account to log in  hyper-v host then try to delete that VM .
Any further information please feel free to let us know .

  • Mapping problem with compressed key update record

    Hi, could you please advise?
    I'm getting the following problem:
About a week ago replicat abened with "Error in mapping" error. I found in discard file some record looking like:
    filed1 = NULL
    field2 =
    field3 =
    field4 =
    field5 =
    datefield = -04-09 00:00:00
    field6 =
    field8 =
    field9 = NULL
    field10 =
    Where filed9 = @GETENV("GGHEADER", "COMMITTIMESTAM"), field10 = = @GETENV("GGHEADER", "COMMITTIMESTAM"), others are table fields mapped by USEDEFAULTS
So I got Mapping problem with compressed key update record at 2012-06-01 15:44
I guess I need to mention that extract failed in 5 minuts before it with: VAM function VAMRead returned unexpected result: error 600 - VAM Client Report <[CFileInfo::Read] Timeout expired after 10 retries with 1000 ms delay, waiting to read transaction log or backup files. To increase the number of retries, use SETENV (GGS_CacheRetryCount = n) in Extract parameter file. To control retry delay time, use SETENV (GGS_CacheRetryDelay = n). handle: 0000000000000398 ReadFile GetLastError:997 Wait GetLastError:997>.
I don't know if it has ther same source as data corruption, could you tell me if it is?
Well, I created new extract, starting 2012-06-01 15:30 to check if there was something with extract at the time, but got the same error.
If I run extract beging at 15:52 it starts and works.
But well, I got another one today. Data didn't look that bad, but yet one column came with null value:( And I'm using it as a key column, so I got Mapping problem with compressed key update record again:(
I'm replicating from SQL Server 2008 to Oracle 11g.
I'm actually using NOCOMPRESSUPDATES in Extract.
CDC is enabled for all tables replicated. The only thing is that it is enabled not by ADD TRANDATA command, but by SQL Server sys.sp_cdc_enable_table, does it matter?
Could you please advise why does it happen?

Well, the problem begins somewhere in extract or before extract, may be in transaction log, I don't know:(
    Here are extract parameters:

  • How to up Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 created VM with Windows 8.1 hyper-v manager

    Hi
I have VM that created with Windows Server
2008 R2 SP1. This was up without a problem with the windows 8 hyper-v manager. I have recently upgraded my OS with 8.1. Now I have tried to import this VM but it
    throwme following message.
This is a real pain when there is no way of doing this. Any help greatly appreciated.
    Regards
    Radika

    Hi,
Brian is right, for mange the Server 2008r2 sp1 we recommend use the Windows 7 or 7.1 platform.

  • Hyper-V 2012 and TMG 2010/NLB

    Hi there,
I have an issue with TMG 2010 on Hyper-V 2012 - the Setup:
    - Windows 2012 Hyper-V
    - TMG 2010 SP2 Rollup 4 running on W2K8 R2
    TMG 2010 (Array Node1) Network
Internal Interface: 10.0.0.10/24 (Route to 192.168.11.0/24 over 10.0.0.1)
    IntraArray: 192.168.10.10/24
    Perimeter: 10.0.60.10/24 GW 10.0.60.100
    TMG 2010 (Array Node2) Network
Internal Interface: 10.0.0.11/24 (Route to 192.168.11.0/24 over 10.0.0.1)
    IntraArray: 192.168.10.11/24
    Perimeter: 10.0.60.11/24 GW 10.0.60.100
    Domain Controllers:
    192.168.11.10
    192.168.11.11
The NICs of the TMG VMs are configured with the correct VLANs and on the Perimeter Interface as well as on the Internal Interface I activate MAC Address Spoofing.
Once I activate NLB on the Perimeter Interface all works fine. But NLB on the internal Interface does not work - I see that NLB got configured on Array Node 1 but the second one does not get the config nor is able to sync it´s configuration with Array
Node 1. ALso the Servers are not able to communicate with the Domain Controllers anymore. Once I deactivate MAC Address Spoofing on the internal Interface and remove NLB the Server are able to speak to the Domain Controllers...
    Any suggestions?

    Hi,
Can I just confirm you are using TMG console to enable NLB?
Also did you enable set this reg key on both your TMG servers? You need to make sure MAC Spoofing is enabled too.
    HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\TCPIP\Parameters
    IPEnableRouter RegDword 1
after enabling the key you may need to reboot both nodes.

  • Hyper-V 2012 R2 HOST hard drive limit

Is there a limit to the size of the HOST hard drive?
I recently loaded Hyper-V on a server with a 2500GB hard drive array.  I did not notice till it was too late (server already in production with Guests) that the install created a 2047 GB partition and left 466 GB 'unallocated'.
Is there a 2 TB limit on the HOST?

    Milos,
I am afraid I am not able to figure this out.
I really want my server to use the whole disk as "C".
How do I create the full 2.5 TB disk?
I have tried playing with diskpart but either Hyper-V 2012 R2 will not install to the disk or it over rides the GPT setting and returns it to MBR.

  • Hyper-V 2012 R2 - Problem accessing shared VHDX file

We're in the process of building a greenfield environment based upon a Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V virtual infrastructure. A 12 node failover cluster (AD integrated) was build, for now 2 CSV volumes are created. We are now working on a virtual SQL 2012 Failover
Cluster on top of the Hyper-V cluster. First we created a (Gen 2) VM with Windows 2012 R2 installed on it, then we (offline) added a new VHDX file (on the same CSV volume) and in the advanced features, we select 'Enable virtual hard disk sharing'. We boot
the VM, disk manager sees a new disk, trying to initialize the disk and an error states 'The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.'
If we disable the advanced sharing option, the disk is accessible, can be initialized and a volume can be created. Enable the feature again and we are in the same phase as where we need to (again) initialize the disk which is not possible. We have the same
problem with a Gen 1 VM.
The CSV volumes reside on a Dell Equallogic storage and are connected via iSCSI, beta of Dell Hit Kitt is installed on the Dell Blade servers (Hyper-V nodes). The CSV volumes have a 4K blocksize, could this be an issue?

    Hi ,
Many thanks for your sharing .

  • Problem with VLAN Trunking within RHEL6.6 VM on Hyper-V 2012 R2?

    Hello,
I'm wondering if there is a known issue with using a "trunk" mode interface within a RHEL6.6 VM?  I found the following article:
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn531026.aspx
    Where note 1 reads:
"For this specific RHEL/CentOS release, VLAN tagging may not work when used in conjunction with trunk mode".
I've been fighting with this for the better part of a day and can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.  I have a RHEL 6.6 VM with two NICs.  The first NIC is a standard access mode NIC - no problems there.
The second NIC has been set up as follows (via PowerShell):
        $a=Get-VmNetworkAdapter -VMName "My VM"
        Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan -Trunk -VmNetworkAdapter $a[1] -AllowedVlanIdList 101-105 -NativeVlanId 1
Note that the physical switch and switchports are configured to send tagged packets for these VLANs as well.
I then set up a VLAN (eth1.102) based interface in the VM ... and never receive any traffic on it.
    What I've observed is that:
A VM on the same physical host using the same virtual switch can communicate with the VM on the tagged VLAN
A pcap of the "eth1" interface (to which eth1.102 is bound) shows traffic for VLANs 101 through 105 arriving ... I just never see the traffic for VLAN 102 forwarded to the eth1.102 interface
An identical network configuration using Ubuntu 14.04.01 LTS works exactly as expected
It's this last point that has me wondering if the problem is with RHEL and not Hyper-V (or the physical/virtual switches involved).
I'm curious if anybody else has seen this behavior or, if RHEL 6.x is working for you, if you're using Intel or Broadcom NICs on the physical Hyper-V host?
    Thanks,

This is indeed a known issue with RHEL.   There's a bug open with Red Hat on the issue, and our understanding is that they have a fix in progress that will be part of a RHEL 6.6 update.  You might inquire with Red Hat regarding
    their bugzilla #1135347.

  • SCVMM 2012 R2 - Problems with VM storage location

    Hello ,
I have a SCVMM 2012 R2 HA Installation . Under vmm i have an 8 node hyper-v 2012 r2 cluster with cluster shared volumes. My problem is with VM placement. Every time i create a Virtual machine by default VMM chooses a spesific CSV that i don't want . Also
because of a provisioning engine i work a lot creating Vm's with powershell. The same happens with powershell. By default the VM's are created in a Volume i don't want. Is there a way to change this somehow ? If i go to each node properties and in placement
paths in the default paths i see all my CSV but the add-remove buttons are grayed out and i cannot remove or add anything.
    Any ideas ?
    Thanks

Running the VM Deployment wizard when deploying to a host group, you are able to specify the CSV for placement. this is also possible through powershell using -path.
Normally, we recommend to use storage classification and associate vhdx's with the right classification so that the intelligent placement engine can take care of it for us.
    Have you tried this?
    -kn
Kristian (Virtualization and some coffee: http://kristiannese.blogspot.com )
Hello Kristian and thanks for your answer ,
Yes as you said running the Vm Deployment wizard i can choose the volume i want to create the VM. As i understand the default volume is the one with the largest free space. I also dont use storage classifications. All of my CSV's created manually before
VMM exists in my infastructure. Also as i see i cannot edit the placements in each hosts. It has as default all my CSV and add-remove is greyd out.
    So...
As i said in my previous post im using a provisioning portal (not 3rd party) to create Virtual Machines. Im using powershell to create my VM's . Can you help me a little with the -path command ? I have take the script from VMM for creation of machines BUT
vmm dos not put somethere the -path command. It only have
Set-SCVMConfiguration -VMConfiguration $virtualMachineConfiguration -VMLocation  but with this it only creates the vm configuration in the path i choose and vmdisks are going to the default path vmm chooses (the csv with the most free
    space).
    Any ideas ?
    Thanks a lot
