Problem with Disk Utility.  Can anyone help?

For months now, my friend's iMac no longer verifies or repairs disk permissions. This is what it reports everytime:
Verify permissions for “Macintosh HD”
*Reading permissions database.*
*Reading the permissions database can take several minutes.*
ACL found but not expected on "Applications/Utilities".
*Permissions verification complete*
It does all this within 5 seconds each time. Clearly it is not verifying/repairing disk permissions because normally you get a huge list of permissions and it takes way more than 5 seconds.
So if anyone can tell me what might be wrong or how to go about fixing, I'd really appreciate it.

Try this way:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
If you continue to have the same issue then while booted into the installer disc select Reset Password from the Utilities menu. Do not make any changes to the password section, rather to the bottom where there is an option to fix the permissions on the user's Home folder and to remove ACLs. Select that option and then click on the Done button (I think it's the Done button.)

    The problem with junk utilities such as MacKeeper is that they are capable of causing damage that is impossible to inflict on a Mac using normal means.
    MacKeeper is not the only such utility; it is merely the most visible due to its aggressive and highly successful marketing tactics.
    Get rid of MacKeeper by following these instructions exactly as written:
    If you used MacKeeper to encrypt any files or folders, use MacKeeper to un-encrypt them.
    Quit the MacKeeper app if it is running.
    Open your Applications folder: Using the Finder's Go menu, select Applications.
    Drag the MacKeeper icon from your Applications folder (not the Dock) to the Trash.
    You will be asked to authenticate (twice):
    You do not need to provide a reason for uninstalling it:
    Click the Uninstall MacKeeper button. You will be asked to authenticate again.
    After it uninstalls you may empty the Trash. All that will remain is an inert log file that does nothing but occupy space on your hard disk.
    Next: Test your Mac for operation. If it is still exhibiting problems, you may need to undo damage that occurred as a result of using MacKeeper. At the extreme this could include erasing your Mac and rebuilding your system from the ground up, but start by downloading and installing the OS X Combo Update I linked earlier. That may be all that is necessary to restore OS X to normal, but other programs you installed may need to be installed again.

    I have a Conoscan 8400F scanner, and after downloading the latest driver it actually works BETTER than it ever has... used to take almost 3 minutes to scan a 8.5 X 11 page, now less than a minute.

  • I am having a major problem with swapfiles. Can anyone help

    I have had a recurring issue for a few months now with accumulating swapfiles. My system drive fills with these files (65 x 1.9gb, the latest) slowing down the system due to finite disk space and causing some maintenence to be carried out. I have up to now been able to get rid of them using the finder to delete the actual files after making them visible in the finder(using IceClean by MacDentro). I can also use Omni disk sweeper to see the space on the drive as well as Disk Inventory X. Now I cannot delete the files. They have conglomerated into a unknown space that cannot be grabbed and trashed nor physically deleted through the finder.
    I am using an SSD 120gb drive with a system size count of 42gb. Bar 5gb the rest is this ether space that wont go away. I have a feeling that this is going to need to terminal commands witch I do not have at my disposal. Can any please help? This is driving me mad. I have reset the PRAM numerous times but this is too lightweight.

    I want to use the Math.random() class to generate a random number
    to fill an array.In the 2 constructors i have this:

    but nothing happens. The array rand does not fill up with random numbers

    The Math.random() is a static method that returns a double value with a positive sign, greater than or equal to 0.0 and less than 1.0.
    It does not return an array or a int. If you use the Math.random method, you will have to cast your double into an int. Also you need to create a for loop to fill your array and add code to check that the value returned from the Math.random method has not already been used.

    Okay, this is interesting, because I was under the impression that FOR IOS DEVICES, contacts are NOT included in a backup, since they are already on icloud (in the contact database).  And since you erased the contacts, then they are gone for good.  One recommendation I've read about is, assuming you have a computer like a Mac also connected to the same icloud account, you can get the contacts back from a backup of the computer, like Time Machine.  However, I don't know where you'd look for that file or files (even though the contacts are stored centrally on icloud, I'm guessing they are also stored locally in a cache file).
    I think another suggestion made here (IIRC) is to turn off syncing of contacts (on the device), then do a restore.  Since there's no sync, icloud's empty contact database will not overwrite the local contacts on the deviced.   Again, I may not be remembering correctly.  Some of these older posts about this same problem were some time ago.
    I'd welcome anyone who really knows the details on this to add to the discussion here.  This is an issue faced by many posters.

    Has anyone who had problems with Disk Utility after installing 10.5.1 through Software Update been able to resolve them by installing the Combo update instead?

    The Solution?
    REINSTALL OSX using the Install DVD.
    I called APPLE Support and we went through a troubleshooting process to rule out Network Issues, Software Issues, File Issues and Hardware Issues. This process was very thorough.
    In the end, we used the Operating System Installation DVD to reinstall the system, which took about 60 minutes including downloading the updates. Reinstallation did not affect any files or lose any applications. Everything was as I left it -- nothing was missing. Easy.
    Now everything is back to normal.

    This can be caused by a number of issues.
    Was everything working and then suddenly stopped??
    Or is this a new clean setup and has never worked.
    Do you have a cable modem which is not a router and the TC setup in bridge? That will cause it. The TC must be in router mode, ie dhcp and nat.
    Check the IP the MBP gets including dns and gateway..
    Then check the ipad/iphone.. post what IP dns and gateway (router in applespeak) they get.

    Thank you for posting your list of installed Extensions. One of them might be intercepting the menu command. Since you have the Add-on Compatibility Reporter, it's possible that an older add-on that doesn't actually work well with Firefox 5 could be to blame. Could you try disabling the "HP Smart Web Printing" extension and see whether that makes any difference?
    Also, you can simulate a print button on a web site by pasting this to the location bar and pressing Enter. You also can save it as a bookmark for easier access (when scripts are saved as bookmarks, we call them bookmarklets). Hopefully you won't need it for long.

    Has iTunes been uninstalled or removed from you system?
    Is it no longer in the Start Menu or in Control Panel?
    What exactly was downloaded and installed?  There is no Windows 9, so it's not possible that it is installed on your computer.

    Open your Applications folder then open the Utilities folder. It should be there.
    If not, click the magnifying glass icon top right corner of your screen. That's Spotlight.
    Type:   Disk Utility
    Hopefully it will show up.
