Problem with diskutil secureErase

We can not seem to get the following command to work in the terminal under 10.4.6. Secure Erase freespace works fine from the GUI DiskUtility.
sudo diskutil secureErase freespace 1 /Volumes/Data
or the same partition as
sudo diskutil secureErase freespace 1 disk3s7
or as
sudo diskutil secureErase freespace 1 /dev/disk3s7
Any help would be appreciated.
All Macs   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I don't know if you have seen the 'man' page for 'diskutil', but it says:
"Ownership of the affected disk is required."
I have a feeling that that is a formatting error in the 'man' page - it looks like the statement only applies to option 3, but it might apply to all options. From just playing around with the command, it seems to succeed if the owner of the volume runs it, but not if run by another user, oddly enough including running with 'sudo' (or directly as "root"). When executed by a different user, the command stalled at the second "Creating Temporary File" stage ('top' showed 'dd' with a high %cpu usage), whereas with 'sudo', the command failed with an error ("Could not create temporary sparse file"; error -9959).
If the "Ignore ownership of this volume" setting was enabled, the command succeeded for me regardless of which user was running the command - with the exception of "root". So even the least privileged login user can run this command, but "root" can't - weird. I have no idea why...

    I have 3 partitions on the system
    First MAC OS-500 GB on the system is mac
    Second GAME 250 GB
    Third Windows 250GB - there is prepared a partition for Windows 7
    I wanted to install Windows 7 through Boot Camp, but the error appears:
      This disk is not supported.
      I went to tools and wanted to share a disk or partition manually podzilic but I have another error:
    Disk Utility can not modify the disk: it contains physical volumes CoreStorage. Use diskutil command in the command line.
    Also tried to do this with my USB lion, but it is the same.
    Inadvertently create a new system, inadvertently waste the data. What do I do?

    Thank you - I followed your directions
    and found that I had already tagged it to watch, but hadn't realized that it was tagging both the old and the new.  Big learning curve for me.

  • Any problems using diskutil createRaid with multiple external drives

    Thinking of connecting 3 - 1tb drives Via FireWire and using diskutil createRaid.

    jimgilbride wrote:
    Thinking of striping across all three 1tb drives for a 3tb virtual drive that can be mounted and used for storage, but one change though will be using USB 2.0 instead of FireWire. I think I would be using RAID-0.
    USB 2 is rather slow interface, the RAID 0 would make little difference. Firewire 800 would be fastest, 400 next.
    Problem with RAID 0 is the data path is separated, one of those drives has a problem and you lose data on all drives. Some people use external RAID 0, but merely as a "scratch disk" or temporarily as they are working on it in a program like Photoshop or similar for faster performance.
    For permanent storage, RAID 0 is very poor and highly risky unless you also have it being backed up daily or using a RAID 0+1 which the RAID 0 set is "mirrored" (RAID 1) at the same time to another drive or another RAID 0 set, thus giving a live backup in case the one RAID 0 fails, which they tend to do more often the more drives are added to the array.
    In your case a RAID 0 of three drives has the 3x potential of failure than using one drive (spindle)
    Another issue is RAID 0 (RAID 1 as well) via Disk Utility is software based RAID, OS X handles it, thus there is a higher potential for failure than hardware based RAID sets. OS X tends to hiccup and if it does, so does your RAID set.
    Another problem with RAID 0 is that you need the storage drive your transferring from to also be a RAID 0 in order to gain maximum speed of the interface (FireWire 800,  Thunderbolt) transferring or else when you transfer files you default to the fastest speed of the slowest drive, likely meaning your internal hard drive.
    You could set up two exact drives on the same interface, RAID 0 those, use it as a working diisk. Then use something like Carbon Copy Cloner to auto-update the RAID 0 to the 3rd drive nightly. This would give you the backup of the RAID 0 you need, unfortunately you will be confined to 1TB of drive space available of the 3rd drive.
    Disk Utility doesn't support the more complex RAID sets, like RAID 5, 10 etc., that dedicated hardware and external controllers can do. RAID 5 with a lot of drives will give the performance and redundancy, in fact if a drive dies you just replace it and it's auto-matically rebuilt from the data on the other drives. Sweet.

  • I am having a problem with playback in Final Cut 6.0.6

    Hello,
    I am having a problem with playback in Final Cut 6.0.6 of 1920x1080 60p footage.
    I transcoded MTS files shot on a Sony NEX FS100 into Apple Pro Res mov files but the
    playback stutters in Final Cut and QTime making it impossible to edit. Is this because the files
    are just so big the computer is having a problem processing them? If so what should I edit in to preserve the
    best quality?
    I am Running Mac OSX 10.6.8
    2x2.4 Ghz Quad Core Intel

    Admittedly my FCUT is out of date, I intend to up to X when I finish off an ongoing project.
    Thanks Luci

    You might consider running diskwarrior on your drive (alsoft.com).  And run diskutility, repair disk.  A corruption of the drive could cause problems.  Also, drive speed starts to fall sharply as the drive gets full.  Make sure you have a minimum of 10% free space on the drive.  You might also get a utility to check the speed of the drive.  I think Aja has one.
    Also, do you have anything else connected to the firewire bus?  If so, try disconnecting it.  You might also try disconnecting ethernet and turning off your airport.  Resetting your fcp preferences couldn't hurt.

  • Partition problem with Win 7 and Lion

    I have a 2011 Mac Mini with two hard drives - the original 500GB drive and a SSD.   The SSD is laid out as follows:
    $ diskutil list
    /dev/disk0
       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
       0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *60.0 GB    disk0
       1:                        EFI                         209.7 MB   disk0s1
       2:                  Apple_HFS OSX Lion SSD            19.0 GB    disk0s2
       3:                 Apple_Boot Recovery HD             650.0 MB   disk0s3
       4:       Microsoft Basic Data BOOTCAMP W7             40.2 GB    disk0s4
    It has my two bootable operating systems and works fine (for now) so I am happy to leave it alone.
    The problem is with the second drive.  It has:
    1) EFI partition 200M
    2) Original Lion install 40G HFS+
    3) Original recovery partition 650M
    4) Space set aside for OSX HFS+ 160G (has some big files in it)
    5) Space set aside for Windows NTFS 300G (no files in it yet)
    I think there is a problem with MBR vs GPT and Disk Utility vs Disk Management.
    Disk Utility or fdisk calls it
    /dev/disk1
       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
       0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *500.1 GB   disk1

       2:       Microsoft Basic Data                         37.6 GB    disk1s2 (these entries are wrong)
       3:       Microsoft Basic Data                         650.0 MB   disk1s3
       4:       Microsoft Basic Data                         161.5 GB   disk1s4
       5:       Microsoft Basic Data NTFS stuff              300.1 GB   disk1s5 (this entry seems right)
    and I cannot access the partitions in Lion.
    Gdisk calls it:
    GPT fdisk (gdisk) version 0.8.1
    Partition table scan:
      MBR: hybrid
      BSD: not present
      APM: not present
      GPT: present

    Windows Disk Management is happy to see inside the HFS partitions, so I know all my files are at least still there.  I had a 5th NTFS partition formatted, but upon going into Lion and back, it disappeared.
    I think ideally what I would like to have is a spare Lion + recovery partition on this drive in case my SSD barfs, then a big NTFS partition to hold my Windows files.  I guess merging the 40G OSX and 160G HFS+ partitions will be ok.  Could the problem be related to MBR having a limit of 4 partitions?  There isn't any data on this drive that isn't backed up, but I would rather do this partition fixing shuffle without having to restore big files.  Any suggestions on how to proceed?

    I managed to fix the problem.  First I used Disk Utility to delete the NTFS partition.  It hung during the process, so I quit it, and the partition was deleted anyway.  Next, I used gdisk to change the partition type from 0700 to AF00 and AB00 for the Lion and Recovery partitions respectively.  It worked and I can access the partitions under OSX again.  Thanks, everybody, you've been super helpful.

  • G4 mini has a problem with its volume structure

    My G4 mini has a problem with its volume structure according to Tech Tools Deluxe. One that the application can't seem to repair. Ran it 3 times and it always hangs before it completes the fix. Never hangs in exactly the same place in the repair routine, but always hangs.
    Ran these tests because for the longest time the mini would accelerate (panic) and shut down. Installation on a new system hangs before it completes the install of all the upgrades. Any help would be appreciated.

    I realize it was not clear from the original post whether or not DiskUtility had been tried yet to fix the hard drive.
    To use DiskUtility to repair the drive, you have to boot from the original install disc that shipped with your Mini.
    1) Insert the Install disc and the shutdown the Mini.
    2) Restart the Mini and hold down the C key as soon as the startup chime or beep is heard. Hold it down until you see the "gear" spinning on the screen.
    3) Select your language, but don't proceed any farther with installation. Use the Utilities menu at the top of the screen to run DiskUtility.
    4) In DiskUtility, click once on the hard drive in the left panel, then click on the Repair Disk button in the right panel.

  • Problem with .img files

    Hey folks!
    I am having a problem with some .img files. Every time I try to open them with DiskUtility, i get a message saying that the operation was failed because the thing was not recognized. I was wondering if there is some sort of workaround for this problem.
    Cheers,
    Al

    .img files are normally OS 9-style disk images. They are quite similar to OS X .dmg, except for the fact that they contain a tiny amount (less than 4 KB) of critical information in the resource fork of the file. If this information goes missing (the file inadvertently loses the resource fork), the disk image can no longer be mounted and is irrevocably damaged.
    If you're not careful, and you involve PCs, it's possible that you could lose the resource fork, which would result in the behavior you're seeing.

  • Set up a RAID 1 with four Hard disks with DiskUtility

    I have a Sonnet Fusion-500 RAID enclosure with four hard disks of 500 GB (2TB total) connected to a Power Mac G5 (2x2.3 GHz, 2GB RAM, MacOSX 10.4.8) through a Sonnet Serial ATA PCI express card (Tempo E4P model). Since I have a total capacity of 2 TB, I would like to set up a RAID 1 (mirrored) and combine the four drives in a final working volume of 1GB, (and the remaining 1GB in the mirror volume). I've been trying to setup the RAID with DiskUtility, but I cannot get a working volume of 1 GB (only 500 GB -the size of a single disc-). Can anybody please give me some help in setting up this type of RAID?
    The four 500 GB discs are OK, since I can create a RAID 0 (~ 2 TB) or initialize them al individual drives without problems.

    Hi all,
    On my macbookpro I installed successfully winxp and linux to have a triple boot with a chain loader.
    the 100gb harddisk was partitionated with diskutil in this way:
    boot mac60gb linux 18gb win15gb
    Now I wanted to delete win and linux and extend the mac partion to use the recovered diskspace...
    from a linux cd I deleted the win and linux partitions
    but now I can't extend the mac partion with diskutil:
    this is the output of diskutil list
    /dev/disk0

    0: GUIDpartitionscheme *93.2 GB disk0
    1: EFI 200.0 MB disk0s1
    2: Apple_HFS MacOsX 60.0 GB disk0s2
    and this is what I get if I launch sudo diskutil resizeVolume disk0s2 limits
    For device disk0s2 MacOsX:
    Current size: 64424509440 bytes
    Minimum size: 47659638784 bytes
    Maximum size: 64424509440 bytes
    Please can anyone help me to avoid a complete format?

    hi hyphen, thank you for your reply
    I have read on the website that ipartition works only
    with the ppc macs so it shouldn't solve my
    problem.
    Do you think it is possible (and eventually how) to
    create a new partition in the empty space?
    Thank you again
    Alex
    Hi Alex, glad your problem got resolved. Just for future reference and anyone reading this post iPartition is now a dual-binary so no worries for Intel Mac owners.

  • Problems with G5

    I get unexpected problems with a dual 1.8 G5 (2 GB RAM, 2 disks inside, both 320 GB). In fact, the machine seems to break any hard drive I plug in it (via USB, eSata or internal HD). The internal hard drive hosting the system is clicking every five minutes or so, and two external hard drives are now mostly unsable (they unexpectedly unmount when copying, or they just don't mount at all). I checked them all with DiskWarrior. Some times, they can be repaired, sometimes not.
    The problems appear with Tiger and Leopard as well. I lost Time Machine backups form an external hard drive (Seagate 320GB, got "keys out of order" error message in DiskUtility). The other external HD I have to put my photos (750 GB Seagate) can be used in both eSATA via Lacie PCI card and USB. Both USB and eSATA fail unexpectedly (unmount while copying) and everytime the hard drives seems to fail more and more everytime I try to use them.
    I used Apple products since years '80 (SE30) and did not have problems whatsoever with previous machine and my actual macbook Pro. This G5 is getting me crazy, and I don't want to put hundreds of dollars repairing since it is worth less than 800$ actually... Is it the power supply, the logic board, a problem with electric voltage up and down? I always found solutions to problems but now, it is the first time I don't see the light... I feel like everytime I plug a hard drive in this G5, I play with fire and may loose my backups and archives!
    What do you suggest? Anyone got these problems with a G5 machine?
    Thank you very much for any support!

    Hi Pierre-Leo Bourbonnais-
    Can you get it to work properly with no external hard drives attached? Which external hard drives do you have attached and how are they interfaced?
    Did you remove the PCI card before upgrading? Is the card Leopard compatible? What happens if you pull out the card and run without it?
    Luck-

  • A problem with threads

    I am trying to implement some kind of a server listening for requests. The listener part of the app, is a daemon thread that listens for connections and instantiates a handling daemon thread once it gets some. However, my problem is that i must be able to kill the listening thread at the user's will (say via a sto button). I have done this via the Sun's proposed way, by testing a boolean flag in the loop, which is set to false when i wish to kill the thread. The problem with this thing is the following...
    Once the thread starts excecuting, it will test the flag, find it true and enter the loop. At some point it will LOCK on the server socket waiting for connection. Unless some client actually connects, it will keep on listening indefinatelly whithought ever bothering to check for the flag again (no matter how many times you set the damn thing to false).
    My question is this: Is there any real, non-theoretical, applied way to stop thread in java safely?
    Thank you in advance,
    Lefty

    This was one solution from the socket programming forum, have you tried this??
    public Thread MyThread extends Thread{
         boolean active = true;
         public void run(){
              ss.setSoTimeout(90);
              while (active){
                   try{
                        serverSocket = ss.accept();
                   catch (SocketTimeoutException ste){
                   // do nothing
         // interrupt thread
         public void deactivate(){
              active = false;
              // you gotta sleep for a time longer than the
              // accept() timeout to make sure that timeout is finished.
              try{
                   sleep(91);
              }catch (InterruptedException ie){
              interrupt();
    }

  • Problem with Threads and a static variable

    I have a problem with the code below. I am yet to make sure that I understand the problem. Correct me if I am wrong please.
    Code functionality:
    A timer calls SetState every second. It sets the state and sets boolean variable "changed" to true. Then notifies a main process thread to check if the state changed to send a message.
    The problem as far I understand is:
    Assume the timer Thread calls SetState twice before the main process Thread runs. As a result, "changed" is set to true twice. However, since the main process is blocked twice during the two calls to SetState, when it runs it would have the two SetState timer threads blocked on its synchronized body. It will pass the first one, send the message and set "changed" to false since it was true. Now, it will pass the second thread, but here is the problem, "changed" is already set to false. As a result, it won't send the message even though it is supposed to.
    Would you please let me know if my understanding is correct? If so, what would you propose to resolve the problem? Should I call wait some other or should I notify in a different way?
    Thanks,
    B.D.
    Code:
    private static volatile boolean bChanged = false;
    private static Thread objMainProcess;
       protected static void Init(){
            objMainProcess = new Thread() {
                public void run() {
                    while( objMainProcess == Thread.currentThread() ) {
                       GetState();
            objMainProcess.setDaemon( true );
            objMainProcess.start();
        public static void initStatusTimer(){
            if(objTimer == null)
                 objTimer = new javax.swing.Timer( 1000, new java.awt.event.ActionListener(){
                    public void actionPerformed( java.awt.event.ActionEvent evt){
                              SetState();
        private static void SetState(){
            if( objMainProcess == null ) return;
            synchronized( objMainProcess ) {
                bChanged = true;
                try{
                    objMainProcess.notify();
                }catch( IllegalMonitorStateException e ) {}
        private static boolean GetState() {
            if( objMainProcess == null ) return false;
            synchronized( objMainProcess ) {
                if( bChanged) {
                    SendMessage();
                    bChanged = false;
                    return true;
                try {
                    objMainProcess.wait();
                }catch( InterruptedException e ) {}
                return false;
        }

    Thanks DrClap for your reply. Everything you said is right. It is not easy to make them alternate since SetState() could be called from different places where the state could be anything else but a status message. Like a GREETING message for example. It is a handshaking message but not a status message.
    Again as you said, There is a reason I can't call sendMessage() inside setState().
    The only way I was able to do it is by having a counter of the number of notifies that have been called. Every time notify() is called a counter is incremented. Now instead of just checking if "changed" flag is true, I also check if notify counter is greater than zero. If both true, I send the message. If "changed" flag is false, I check again if the notify counter is greater than zero, I send the message. This way it works, but it is kind of a patch than a good design fix. I am yet to find a good solution.
    Thanks,
    B.D.

  • Problem with threads running javaw

    Hi,
    Having a problem with multi thread programming using client server sockets. The program works find when starting the the application in a console using java muti.java , but when using javaw multi.java the program doesnt die and have to kill it in the task manager. The program doesnt display any of my gui error messages either when the server disconnect the client. all works find in a console. any advice on this as I havent been able to understand why this is happening? any comment would be appreciated.
    troy.

    troy,
    Try and post a minimum code sample of your app which
    does not work.
    When using javaw, make sure you redirect the standard
    error and standard output streams to file.
    Graeme.Hi Graeme,
    I dont understand what you mean by redirection to file? some of my code below.
    The code works fine under a console, code is supposed to exit when the client (the other server )disconnects. the problem is that but the clientworker side of the code still works. which under console it doesnt.
    public class Server{
    ServerSocket aServerSocket;
    Socket dianosticsSocket;
    Socket nPortExpress;
    ClientListener aClientListener;
    LinkedList queue = new LinkedList();

    int clientPort = 0;
    String clientName = null;
    boolean serverAlive = true;
    * Server constructor generates a server
    * Socket and then starts a client threads.
    * @param aPort      socket port of local machine.
    public Server(int aPort, String aClientName, int aClientPort){
    port = aPort;
    clientName = aClientName;

  • Problem with threads and camera.

    Hi everybody!
    I've a problem with taking snapshot.
    I would like to display a loading screen after it take snapshot ( sometimes i
    have to wait few seconds after i took snapshot. Propably photo is being taken in time where i have to wait).
    I was trying to use threads but i didn't succeed.
    I made this code:
    display.setCurrent(perform);
            new Thread(new Runnable(){
                public void run() {
                    while((!performing.isShown()) && (backgroundCamera.isShown())){
                        Thread.yield();
                    notifyAll();
            }).start();
            new Thread(new Runnable(){
                public void run() {
                    try {
                        this.wait();
                    } catch(Exception e) {
                        exceptionHandler(e);
                    photo = camera.snapshot();
                    display.setCurrent(displayPhoto);
            }).start();This code is sometimes showing performing screen but sometimes no.
    I don't know why. In my opinion performing.isShown() method isn't working correctly.
    Does anyone have some idea how to use threads here?

    Hi,
    I've finally managed to work this fine.
    The code:
           Object o = new Object();
           display.setCurrent(perform);
            new Thread(new Runnable(){
                public void run() {
                    while(!performing.isShown()){
                        Thread.yield();
                   synchronized(o) {
                      o.notify();
            }).start();
            new Thread(new Runnable(){
                public void run() {
                    try {
                        synchronized(o) {
                           o.wait(1);
                    } catch(Exception e) {
                        exceptionHandler(e);
                    photo = camera.snapshot();
                    display.setCurrent(displayPhoto);
            }).start();

  • Problem with threads hanging

    We have a problem where our application stops responding after a few days of usage. Things will for fine for a day or two, and then pretty quickly threads will start getting hung up, usually in places where they are allocating memory
    We are running WebLogic 8.1 SP2 on Sun JDK 1.4.2_04 on Solaris 8 using the alternate threading model and the -server hotspot vm. We are running pretty much the same code that we had no problems with under WebLogic 6.1 SP4 and Sun JDK 1.3.1.
    A thread dump usually shows that some or all of our execute threads are in the state "waiting for monitor entry" even though they are not currently waiting on any java locks. Here is a sample thread from the thread dump (we have ~120 threads so I don't want to post the full dump).
    =============================================================================================

    =============================================================================================
    String.java line 1446 for this jdk allocates a new String object, and all the other threads in this state also are creating new objects or arrays, etc.
    We've done a pstack on this process when it's in this state, and the threads that are in the "waiting for monitor entry" that look like they're allocating memory are all waiting on the same lwp_mutex_lock with some allocation method that's calling into the native TwoGenerationCollectorPolicy.mem_allocate_work (see pstack output below for the same thread as in the thread dump above)

    Has anyone ever seen anything like this? I'm trying to figure out if this is caused by something we're doing, or something relating to our environment and jvm options. Any ideas?

    Thanks for the reply - I'm testing our app with the +UseConcMarkSweepGC now in our test environment to make sure it doesn't cause any problems there.  Unfortunately the only place we've had this problem is on the production server, so it's extra difficult debugging this.
    We're using the following memory options:
    -ms512m -mx512m -XX:NewSize=128m -XX:PermSize=192m -XX:MaxNewSize=128m -XX:MaxPermSize=192m -XX:SurvivorRatio=8and the following debugging options, as we've also been seeing OutOfMemoryErrors ( see http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=37&thread=522354&tstart=45&trange=15 )
    -verbosegc -XX:+PrintGCDetails -XX:+PrintGCTimeStamps -XX:+PrintHeapAtGCBTW, which c++filt version and options are you using? Our Solaris boxes only seem to have the GNU version installed. I was trying to run that on some of the other stack traces and wasn't getting anywhere, and didn't know if because it was GNU version wouldn't work on something compiled with the Sun compiler.
    Thanks!
