Problem with embedding an OpenType CFF font

I'm trying to embed an OpenType CFF font into a simple PDF file and can't get it to work. I'm hoping that someone here could spot my error or give me someplace to go for a better example/help.<br /><br />I've dumped the font itself to a file and it appears ok. OS X and Windows XP recognizes it as an OpenType CFF file and renders it.<br /><br />However, Acrobat Reader says "Cannot extract the embedded font 'GaramondPremrPro'. Some characters may not display or print correctly."<br /><br />Acrobat Pro preflight PDF syntax reports:<br />An unexpected value is associated with the key<br />Key: Subtype<br />Value: /OpenType<br />Type: CosName<br />Formal Representation: FontFile<br />Cos ID: 12<br />Traversal Path: ->Pages->Kids->[0]->Resources->Font->F1->FontDescriptor->FontFile3<br /><br />So... here is the important bits from the PDF:<br /><br />%PDF-1.7<br /><br />.....<br /><br />10 0 obj<br /><<<br />/Type /Font<br />/Subtype /Type1<br />/BaseFont /GaramondPremrPro<br />/Encoding /WinAnsiEncoding<br />/FirstChar 1<br />/LastChar 255<br />/Widths [ <omitted> ]<br />/FontDescriptor 11 0 R<br />>><br />endobj<br /><br />11 0 obj<br /><<<br />/Type /FontDescriptor<br />/Ascent 1000<br />/CapHeight 800<br />/Descent -300<br />/Flags 1000<br />/FontBBox [-213 -336 1405 918]<br />/FontName /GaramondPremrPro<br />/ItalicAngle 0<br />/StemV 100<br />/FontFile3 12 0 R<br />>><br />endobj<br /><br />12 0 obj<br /><<<br />/Length 13 0 R<br />/Subtype /OpenType<br />>><br />stream<br /><this data saved by itself appears as OpenType Font, Postscript Outlines, Single master in Windows and renders as it should. It has CFF table and it doesn't matter if I include all the original tables or only those suggested as needed it still doesn't render in the PDF itself>

Argg! I knew it would be something stupid. I spent a lot of time recently trying to get all the exceptions worked out in font embedding and it is all starting to run together.
Yes, I use flate by default, but I used AsciiHex so I could examine the data easily. Now I'm wondering when this crept in and how much time I wasted. Maybe I don't want to know.
This fixes the display issue in Acrobat/Reader, but Apple Preview still won't display the font (it substitutions but gives no error). Does anyone know if Apple Preview even supports FontFile3/OpenType?
Confusingly, Acrobat's Preflight -> PDF Analysis -> "Report PDF syntax issues" still reports the "An unexpected value is associated with the key" error.
In this case, would extracting the CFF table as is from the OTF be a valid CFF font that could be used, thereby using FontFile3/Type1C and make it compatible with Apple Preview? Just thinking out loud.
I've updated the file http://www.pagestream.org/fonttest4.pdf to reflect the proper encoding for anyone who might have an inkling to take a look.
Thank you Leonard for your help!

  • Adobe Type Manager problem with Windows 7 and DIN font file extension not showing

    I have Windows 7 and for some reason I cannot install Adobe Type Manager onto my Computer.
    I need ATM to install the DIN font but am having no luck what so ever.
    I can see the DIN font in my Dropbox but it is showing up like this:-  ._DIN-bold, no file file extension. what am I doing wrong? is it Mac?

    Adobe Type Manager absolutely cannot be installed on Windows 7. In fact, even attempting to install it may corrupt your operating system installation and its ability to properly render Type 1 and OpenType CFF fonts. The last version of Windows for which ATM was at all compatible was Windows XP, 32-bit only!
    Adobe Type Manager is not at all necessary to install fonts, even Type 1 fonts, on Windows 7 systems. Right click on the font file for TrueType of OpenType CFF fonts or the .PFM file for Type 1 fonts and select the Install option.
    The font file you are trying to install is for MacOS. It cannot be installed on Windows.

  • Problems with embedding swfs into Director 11.5

    Hello everyone,
    I am hoping someone can help me and please bear with me - I don't know a lot about director - I can do some Lingo and get around in the program to make things work.
    Right now I am working on an interactive presentation where the user can click a button to view an animation. I am using Director 11.5 for my presentation and have made my animations in After Effects CS3 -- from there I converted my .mov files to .flv files using the Adobe Media Encoder CS4... then I took my .flv file into Flash and published it as a swf file.
    The problem that I am having is that when I play the presentation (within Director and after publishing the .app/projector file) the swf files are playing - but there is all this glitchy-artifact stuff all over them. Does anyone know why this would be happening? When I play the swf files in the flash player they look great. Before, when I was using Flash MX and Director MX, I never had any problems with embedding my swf animation files - and they played great - without any artifact. Any and all help would be much appreciated as this project is due in the next few days and I would prefer to figure out a solution rather than uninstalling Flash CS4 and Director 11.5 - and going back to MX.
    I toyed with the thought that my video card isn't good enough but I tested the .app file on another machine and the glitchy-artifacts were still there. I have attached a jpg showing the artifact that appears.
    I am running Mac OS X 10.5.7
    Dual 2 GHz G5 PowerPC
    ATI Radeon X800 XT
    Thank you!

    Sorry... here is the image again and I think the problem might be my machine -- it is very old (~4+ years) and when I tested my .app on a newer intel mac here it worked fine... but maybe I am missing something -- it seems odd that I can see the swf fine in flash player but it is glitchy when played through director or the .app projector file

  • Problem with embedded font on offset printing

    Hello,
    I generated a leaflet with InDesign CS5. I exported it as PDF/x-3:2002. In the document, I used quote signs (American Typewriter Light font). When I export the PDF, everything goes well, and when I check in Acrobat, the font seems correctly embedded. However, when I picked up the leaflets at the printing house today (it's an offset printing), all the quotation marks were not printed (squares instead). Where does the problem come from?? Did the printing people did a mistake and what mistake? Or is it me?
    Thanks for your help!!

    Unfortunately, I haven't been able to respond to this thread up until now, but having reviewed this full thread, I have a few comments to offer:
    It is irrelevant whether the original text was copied and pasted or whether the font was Type 1, TrueType, a TrueType collection, OpenType CFF, etc. The real issue is whether the PDF/X-3:2002 file exported from InDesign is indeed valid. This can very easily be verified by running the appropriate preflight profile for PDF/X-3:2002 in Acrobat Pro 10 or 11. There is no need for any third party plug-ins or any other software for this.
    Assuming that preflight pronounces the file to be 100% kosher with no exceptions and that the file displays properly in Acrobat Pro, you should then try printing the file (or even just the pages that exhibited the problem) from Acrobat Pro to a printer that supports Adobe PostScript 3.
    If the printed output from the PostScript printer is correct as well, the problem lies totally with your print service provider and their workflow.
    In our extensive experience, problems can occur in any number of ways. One of most frequent sources of problems are printers who routinely open PDF files in Adobe Illustrator to view and “fix” them, somehow thinking that Adobe Illustrator is a general purpose PDF editor. For the record, Adobe Illustrator is not, repeat not, repeat yet again not a general purpose PDF file editor. Adobe Illustrator can only successfully edit PDF files saved from Adobe Illustrator itself when the “save editability” option is specified. Even then, Illustrator requires you to have all fonts referenced by the PDF file actually installed on your system; it does not use any fonts embedded in the PDF file. For other PDF files (such as those produced by Distiller, export from InDesign, etc.), character substitutions (especially for non-ASCII characters such as typographical quotes), font substitutions, color space changes, etc. are common issues.
    If the printer is not abusing Illustrator on your InDesign-exported files, it could be any number of third party products that many printers use, some of which are of dubious value and some of which may be either defective in terms of compliance with the PDF specification or simply grossly out-of-date. (It is amazing how many print service providers put their customers' submitted PDF files through all sorts of “fixup” processes, regardless of whether the files need such fixups or not. Many of these “fixups” are more likely to cause problems than they are to fix anything!)
    Under no conditions should you need to fully embed fonts in your PDF files. Certainly no Adobe software, including applications, Acrobat, and our PostScript and PDF RIP technologies licensed to OEMs is any way sensitive to whether fonts are subsetted or not! If a third party workflow component is so-sensitive, it is by definitiion defective.
    In terms of imposition, there should likewise be no sensitivity to whether fonts are subsetted or not. By the way, the most reliable imposition is actually done at the RIP itself, not by programs that either place PDF files into other documents and regenerate PDF or by utilities that rearrange PDF files or create new PDF files representing the printed flats.
    This thread also discussed the issue of whether the OP received a “proof.” Unless you receive a hard copy proof in which the content was put through the exact same workflow as the final product, including RIP and all prepress steps, it is very possible that the defect noted would not show up on the proof. Nonetheless, obtaining a hard copy proof is an excellent idea, especially if the issue comes up about liability for the cost of reprinting the job or even whether the original job should be paid for if the print service provider can't “fix” their workflow problems!

  • Problems with embedded font on spark RichText control

    « Hide
    I have an embedded font that appears correctly when used with Halo components, but when associated with the spark RichText component, it is not recognized.
    The embedded font is defined in css file, my css file
    @namespace s "library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark";
    @namespace mx "library://ns.adobe.com/flex/halo";
    @font-face {
    src:url("assets/fonts.swf");
    fontFamily: "Helvetica Neue";
    @font-face {
    src:url("assets/fonts.swf");
    fontFamily:"Helvetica Neue";
    fontWeight: bold;
    global{
    color:#333333;
    fontFamily: "Helvetica Neue";
    fontSize:12px;
    The embedded font it used in the following manner:
    <mx:Label styleName="panelTitle" text="Hello There"  width="263" x="21" y="11"/>
    <s:Group width="410" x="38" y="52" height="50">
    <s:RichText styleName="panelTitle" text="Hello There" fontFamily="Helvetica Neue"  width="263" x="21" y="11"/>
    </s:Group>
    The Label shows the embedded font correctly while the RichText control does not. It does not matter if the fontFamily is specified explicitly on the control or not.
    I created a bug SDK-22137, but since I'd need to get this working soon any help would be appreciated.

    Just a friendly reminder. Many of the examples on that site are fairly old and havent been updated to use the latest APIs. For example, "cff" has recently been renamed to "embedAsCFF". In fact, here's a better example:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <s:Application xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
                   xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"

            @namespace s "library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark";

        </fx:Style>
        <mx:Label text="Halo Label" />
        <mx:Label text="Halo Label (bold)" fontWeight="bold" />
        <s:RichText text="Spark RichText" />
        <s:RichText text="Spark RichText (bold)" fontWeight="bold" />
    </s:Application>
    Also, depending on what you're trying to do, this may help you: http://blog.flexexamples.com/2009/06/14/using-a-cff-embedded-font-with-a-halo-label-contro l-in-flex-4/. Basically, you can set the textFieldClass style on certain Halo controls and have them use the mx.core.UITLFTextFieldClass (instead of the default mx.core.UITextFieldClass) so they can take advantage of the new CFF fonts.
    In fact, here's the same example as above, but with the single embedded font:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <s:Application xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
                   xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"
                   xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/halo">
        <s:layout>
            <s:VerticalLayout paddingLeft="20" paddingTop="20" />
        </s:layout>
        <fx:Style>
            @namespace mx "library://ns.adobe.com/flex/halo";
            @namespace s "library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark";
            /* DefineFont4 (embedAsCFF == true) */
            @font-face {
                src: url("assets/georgia.TTF");
                fontFamily: embGeorgiaCFF;
                fontWeight: normal;
                embedAsCFF: true;
            @font-face {
                src: url("assets/georgiab.TTF");
                fontFamily: embGeorgiaCFF;
                fontWeight: bold;
                embedAsCFF: true;
            mx|Label {
                fontFamily: embGeorgiaCFF;
                textFieldClass: ClassReference("mx.core.UITLFTextField");
            s|RichText {
                fontFamily: embGeorgiaCFF;
                fontLookup: embeddedCFF;
        </fx:Style>
        <mx:Label text="Halo Label" />
        <mx:Label text="Halo Label (bold)" fontWeight="bold" />
        <s:RichText text="Spark RichText" />
        <s:RichText text="Spark RichText (bold)" fontWeight="bold" />

  • Problem with embedding fonts in Illustrator CS5

    I have just installed Illustrator CS5, and have tested creating a PDF document based on one of my existing files, as well as a new file.
    When I open these PDF documents in Adobe Acrobat Pro 9, I am told that Acrobat cannot access one of the embedded fonts (Korinna BT).
    I have had no issues with embedding this font in Illustrator CS4, and (strangely), when I open these files in other PDF viewers (Preview and PDFPenPro), they report no issues.
    Has anyone else experienced this issue?
    I have removed and reinstalled the font in question, and tested/verified that the font is OK - but still not joy.
    Regards
    Jeremy

    The error message I get is:
    "Cannot extract the embedded font 'MVZTIW+KorinnaITCbyBT-Regular'. Some characters may not display or print correctly."
    When I check the fonts in the PDF in "Document Properties" in Adobe Acrobat the following is shown:
    "KorinnaITCbyBT-Regular
         Type: TrueType
         Encoding: Ansi
         Actual Font: Adobe Serif MM
         Actual Font Type: Type 1"
    It seems that Illustrator is adding some strange "code" ('MVZTIW') to the beginning of the font, which means the actual font can't be found and extracted.

  • Windows OpenType CFF Font Rendering

    We have a situation where our identity font is displaying terribly in MS Word 2010 on Windows 7. The font looks great in InDesign and Illustrator. The font family is OpenType with PostScript outlines, aka CFF. This behavior is consistent for any OpenType font from Adobe, such as Myriad Pro or Adobe Garamond.
    I am nearly certain that the Windows font rendering engine is optimized for TrueType outlines and renders PostScript outlines poorly. I also think that Adobe is using a different rendering engine for the Creative Suite applications, perhaps their own. I have not been able to find any specific documentation of these statements.
    Does this ring true? Does anyone know of specific documentation of poor font rendering in Windows applications, especially MS Office?

  • Problems with Embedded classes mapping

    Hi,
    I'm experiencing problems for table generation with the following case:
    a class declares two fields; one of them typed as a subclass of the other; both fields annotated with @Embedded; the subclass uses the annotation @AttributeOverride to avoid column names duplication.
    When the tables are generated, one of the field (the most specialized one) is simply omitted by the JPA implementation...
    To illustrate my problem, here is an example:
    @Entity
    public class Bar implements Serializable {
         @Embedded
         protected Foo foo = null;
         @Id
         @GeneratedValue(strategy=GenerationType.SEQUENCE)
         protected long id = -1;
         @Embedded
         protected SubFoo subFoo = null;
         public Bar() {
                    super();
            // getters & setters
    @Embeddable
    public class Foo implements Serializable {
         @Column
         protected String bar = null;
         @Column
         protected String foo = null;
         public Foo() {
              super();
            // getters & setters
    @Embeddable
    @AttributeOverrides({
         @AttributeOverride(name="bar", column=@Column(name="subbar")),
         @AttributeOverride(name="foo", column=@Column(name="subfoo"))
    public class SubFoo extends Foo {
         public SubFoo() {
                    super();
    }The generated table BAR contains only 3 columns: ID, FOO, BAR...
    ...and what I expect is two additionnal columns named SUBFOO & SUBBAR!
    Can someone tell me: if I definitely need to go back to school (I'm obviously not an EJB expert), or how to make it work as I expect...?
    Thanks
    -Jerome

    I found the note in the EJB specs that clearly states that my issue has no solution at this time:
    "Support for collections of embedded objects and for the polymorphism and inheritance of embeddable classes will be required in a future release of this specification."
    EJB 3.0 specs - final release - persistence, page 23, note 10 in section 2.1.5

  • Whitespace problem with embedded tables

    I have a datastructure with embedded groups. In my RTF template, I am using a table for each of these groups, and embedding them likewise. When I load my data, however, and view it, there is a random, undesirable amount of whitespace between where one table ends and where its parent table ends.
    To try to make it more clear:
    "TEXT in inner table"
    ----------------------------------------- (End of inner table)
    (Random Gap Here)
    "Text in outer table"
    ----------------------------------------- (End of outer table)
    The Size of the gap seems to depend on how much space is left on the page. If there is just enough data to fill a page, it will all fit nicely, exactly how I want it. If a page does not contain much data, then the gap gets really big, as if it was trying to cover the entire page.
    Anyone else run into this problem?
    Thanks,
    Matt

    Thanks very much!
    Before, I had a separate table for each group. When it was all said and done, I had about 5 levels of table embedding. YUCK!
    Now I made one big table (1x1) and only used tables where I couldn't get by with plain indenting. The most table embedding that is going on now is individual tables within the large 1x1 table. This method proves much more flexible and elegant.
    Thank you very much ashee1,
    Matt Soukup

  • Problem with embedded OLE objects

    I am using Outlook as client.
    I sent mail with Excel table as embeddet object.
    Outlook can after what read and show this mail.
    But if I read this mail with SOAP I get a message body without Excel table.
    I thought it should be in attachment.
    hasAttachments-filed in mail object is true, but attachments-filed is empty (not null!): attachments=AttachmentItemInfo[0].
    I am reading mail with getItemRequest and view = "default attachments attachment message attachments".
    We are using Groupwise 8.0.1 HP1.
    What is hier wrong? How can I read OLE object with SOAP?

    The complete response was not included.
    If you are trying to save an embedded OLE attachment,
    there is no logic to do that on the POA, the attachment
    will be dropped.

  • Mail problem with embedded images and links

    Since Yosemite Apple Mail seems to have a problem with images that are used as a hyperlink to a website.
    While links are clickable with external loaded images work fine, links with embedded images just do not anything. Clicking on them selects them, a double-click opens the image in Preview.
    This works:
    <a href="https://www.google.de"><img src="https://www.google.de/images/srpr/logo11w.png" alt="Google Logo"></a>
    This does not work:
    <a href="https://www.google.de"><img src="cid:logo_google" alt="Google Logo"></a>
    Can you reproduce this problem?
    We tried it with OS X 10.10.1 and 10.10.2

    After a bit of digging around I think I have found the reason for the EO being called prior to the CO. In the parent page CO, there is a transaction commit (oapagecontext.getApplicationModule(oawebbean).getTransaction().commit();).
    Therefore, I assume that as my custom AM is a child of standard AM where the transaction is being commit, the child AM is sharing the same transaction/session and hence the EO being called.
    I am running into issues with moving the validation to the EO as the validation requires visibility of the VO values to calculate a total value. Therefore is there a way to ensure that my custom AM maintains a separate database session/transaction to the parent/standard AM? Is it possible to break the parent/child relationship?
    This way I assume that the commit issued by the parent page CO will not affect my custom AM/EO.
    Cheers.
    Jon.

  • Page Layout Problems with embedded iViews

    Hi all,
    We are having problems with the position of the iviews in the layout page using embedded iviews. Sometime load in one order and other times in another one. I need that the iviews load in the same order always.
    Any idea, please?
    Thanks for all.

    Hi José,
    if in fact this is the case, then I would expect that the single iViews are called via different threads. If this is the case, then I would implement within the iView to wait for some result provided by the iView, which should be loaded first (for example, by putting some certain value into the http session object).
