Problem with external ext4 HDD
Hi Arch community!
I have an Arch installation on a 40GB IDE hdd, in an old desktop working flawlessly. This morning I removed the hard drive from the computer and put it in an external enclosure to connect it via USB to another PC, also running Arch. However there's now way to access the disk and its partitions using the external enclosure. According to dmesg the disk could be damaged, but to ensure this I placed it back on the old computer and everything works perfect. Arch loads and I can access my files and folders.
I have no idea of the reason of this behaviour. Can you help me??
Here are the dmesg messages:

The particion showed above is formatted in ext4 instead of ext3 as Parted displays.
Instead of connecting the enclosure while running Arch on another computer I also tried to boot it up directly using the Grub installed on the disk, and it doesn't even load Grub properly, displaying an Error 18.
I also tried a fsck on the disk but it also failed.
What could I do to access my data via USB without formatting?
Thanks in advance,
Alex.

Problems with external USB HDDs (MSI P67A-C45)
Hello! Help me, please.
I'm using number of external HDDs (3,5'' -- with power supply each). Most of them are plugged into the motherboard USB 2.0 via a powered USB hub. Some of them are plugged directly to the motherboard. I'm facing three major problems with them. Please, consult me.
1) I cannot access those of HDDs, which are plug via the hub. Windows just do not see them. If I plug the hub into a laptop, it works.
2) Only factory-made external HDDs are working, being plugged directly into USB 2.0. Those of them, which I made myself (using HDD and a box, obviously) are not working with USB 2.0, BUT ONLY WITH USB 3.0. I do not understand, whats the problem with USB 2.0 then... Devices like mouse, printers, scanners are working...
3) If HDDs are plugged and switched on during booting up, the loader gets stuck on "B4" phase. It can be completely stuck or only for 5 minutes and then go on booting. My question is: whats the problem? How can I fix this?
Please, take into the account that all this system was working perfectly fine a week ago, when I had another motherboard and CPU. I'm using these disks for several yeas. I just had a reason for the MB+CPU upgrade and this upgrade leads to such problems... Please, help me.if they are all fitted with a seperate power source then yes it matters not
many usb drives have 2 usb connectors
one for data and power
the second is just for more power from a second connection

Problems with external context mapping
Hi ,
I am having the following problems with external context mapping from one WD component to another.
Problem description:
In the <i>Component Interfaces</i> I have defined a WD interface "InfA".
In the <i>interface controller</i> of this compoenent,I have ContextA and attributeA(cardinality 1..1).The contextA is marked as an "Input Element".
Now my webdynpro componentB adds InfA as used component. In componentB I decalre a contextB with attributeB and map it to contextA to set up the external context mapping.
Now I expect that if any webdynpro component implements this WD interface InfA ,he has access to contextA with the data getting filled from contextB.
After i have created the component for the used component I try to fill values in the source node contextB thru this code:
wdContext.currentContextB.setB(value);
But in the runtime I keep getting error nullPointerException for nodeContextB,suggesting that the mapping has not been completed.
Can anyone suggest due to what the error can come ,and, if its a webdynpro bug ,is there a workaround??
Thanks in advance for your help.
Best regards
SouravHI,
Valery : I personally checked by doing the example, if the names of value attribute are different in the child's interface and parents component controller then it throws the exception.
Sourav: NullPointer Exception is thrown when something is not properly initialised, if in the main component the cardinality of mapped origin is 1.1 then you need to access it element directly like:
wdContext.currentParentNodeElement().setFname("Abhijeet");
wdContext.currentParentNodeElement().setLname("M");
i will suggest just check out if you are declaring some element of value node and without initialising taking its use or what?
if this doesnt solve your problem, please post the expanded exception.
hope it helps
let me know if you face nay problem

Our parameters in structure are:

we made some test with parameter BYPASS_INB_HANDLER, set as 'X' but this not solve our issue.
We have an implementation in badi BBP_CATALOG_TRANSFER to map product category, even if I set an external breakpoint in this implementation, system does not pass through it, also we test with this implementation inactive and behavior is the same, nothing transfer to shopping cart
Does anyone know what's missing?
Thanks in advance.
Best regards,
José Luis D.Hello Jason,
Thank you for your answer, but as I told, If I set an external breakpoint it does not stop for debugging, so I can't see table as you recomended. This process (debugging) is familiar to me, in last version I can do it.
Any suggestion?
Thanks in advance, best regards

Hi. I have a problem with external editing preferences. If I add Photoshop as an external editor, it won't launch when selected, if I add it as an additional external editor it will. Why? How can I fix this as I need to use Photoshop and another program as the additional external editor.
I use a Mac running OS X (10.8.5) and PS CS4 and LR 5.7. Any ideas on a fix? Thanks in advance.I don't know why Photoshop won't start. However, it's possible to create external editor presets using the additional external editor tools. There are instructions on how to do this in the Lightroom help. You could assign Photoshop and create one preset, and then assign another program and create another preset.
I don't know if deleting your preferences would fix the problem or not. It can sometimes fix other problems.

Problem with External 2.1 digital speakers
Anybody have any problems with external digital speakers connected to the SPDIF connection? I have a 1215-600XT, and I tried connecting my old DELL Boston Acoustic 2.1 speakers. They worked, but any time a "sound" played, a loud pop would follow the end of the sound track. If its multiuple sounds (i.e. an application that is making numerous alert sounds) I get multiple pops. It even happens at the endf of music tracks. It was so annoying, I stopped using the speakers. before I invest in another set of speakers, want to know I am not wasting my time.
Also, anyway of getting the soundcard to support digital 2.1 or other sound? The set-up screen only shows stereo for external speakers and no way of adding more.
Sincerely
Scottpmoney,
If you need a RMA, you will need to contact Customer Support either via email or phone. Also, it may be a fault with the sub and not just the cable alone, anyway contact Customer Support and they will be able to assist further.

Thx in advanceYes I have the same problem with a WD My Passport Essential on a 2011 iMac running Mavericks. Opening Unlock Drive I find it says 'The drive is already unlocked' but will not allow me to see the contents of the drive. Only the Smartware 'CD' image shows up in Finder. Unaccountably the same WD drive unlocks fine on a 2009 MacBook (also running 10.9) How can I 'set a breakpoint' as advised below in Terminal result...? I am worried I will accidentally lose the data on the 750Gb drive in the process of fixing the error.
Thank you for advice!

Hi there , I have problems with my external HDD when i plug it in mac doesnt recognize it(macbook pro retina late 2012) but on iMac with os snow leopard (external is WD my passport wdbacx0010BSL)
Thank you for your reply.
I tried that last night. When I tried to verify the disk from startup, I received this message:
when I tried to repair the disk I received this message:
After the second message, I moved what I needed off the external HDD and tried to reformat. Which led to the errors in my OP. So frustrating.

Problem with external HDD after installing updates in Mac os X 10.5 leopard
Hi,
I just went out to the store and bought a copy of the leopard.
I installed it with nothing attached to the computer. Everything went fine.
When I went to update the software I had two packages there that I updates, so I had to restart the computer. when it started again it indicated that it had problems with my Iomega Ultramax 1tb disk. It says that disk repair failed and that I only have limited access to the disk. and since it's ALOT of data on the disk, I don¨t rally got the tools to copy everything to another location and then erase the disk and copy everything back. So does anyone know if there's a solution to this.
I'd be really happy to get a solution on this,
thanks alot.
RichWhen I'm using disk utility and use "verify disk" I get the following message:
"First Aid failed
Disk utility stopped verifying "UltraMax" because the following error was encountered.
Filesystem verify or repair failed." -
Having problems with External Hard Drives on my Laptop
Ever since using linux i've always had the same problem. Whenever i connect a hard-drive, it keeps disconnecting/ spitting input-ouptut errors.
I thought it was because of the hard-drive failing, which turned out to be the problem with my last two, but i'm using another one (Seagate MomentusXT 500GB) and i'm getting the same problem.
I had just reformatted this hard drive from NTFS to Ext4 using Gparted, so maybe that's the problem? I'm really kind of lost.
I mount my HDD like this:
sudo mount /dev/sdd1 /mnt/usb
and unmount like this:
sudo umount /mnt/usb
It connects initially, and i'm able to put stuff onto it. I was able to put a whole TV series on it successfully, but when i tried copying my music onto it it failed and alot of the music didn't copy, giving me these errors:

I can then unmount and mount the HDD again, and try again, but i keep getting the same problem.
Here's my dmesg:

Anyone know how to fix this? There is a whole lot of bad going on there.
There are problems both drive errors and USB errors. I don't believe it.
I have a hunch the drive is starving for power.
USB devices are supposed to function all the way down to 4.25V. Not all do.
USB ports are supposed to be able to deliver 4.25V at the end of the cable at 500mA. Not all do.
USB 2.0 devices are not supposed to draw more than 100mA unless they negotiate for more. Some violate that.
USB 2.0 devices are never supposed to draw more than 500mA. Some violate that. Especially disk drives.
My guess is that your drive is drawing excess current and the voltage drop through the port and cable are dropping you below 4.25; or at least below the voltage that your drive goes "Tango Uniform"[1]. Does your drive have the option for external power? If so try it. Following up on wtx's comment; USB 3.0 is capable of delivering more power. Also, some drives have used a cable that violates just about every aspect of the USB specification: A "Y" cable that plugs into two host ports to provide more power to the guest. I despise this solution with every fiber of my electrical engineering existence; never-the-less, you might try one.

Restored iMac from an MBP Backup giving problems with external devices
Recently, I restored from an MBP Leopard OS Time machine Backup into a new iMac 27".
Restoring process ran smoothly and took like an hour to recover my files and applications from the external disk time machine backup and after that the new iMac had everything my old MBP used to have but the OS. So far so good.
But now I'm having problems connecting external devices, like the very same external disk to set my time machine backup or a Cannon Printer.
The iMac can recognize and attach the external HDD (iOmega 1TB), I've succesfully formated it several times, but as soon as the backup process starts it will idle after backing 200MB or so and the HDD will be abruptly disconnected.
Regarding the MP610 Cannon printer/scanner I used it smoothly once from this iMac, but after that it's been impossible to scan or print again, and it keeps saying it is connected to an MBP instead of an iMac!
I already read the other related topics but my case is slightly different than those, so I will appreciate anyhelp you could provide me.When you say you restored, what does that mean? Did you do a full restore, installing the system from the backup onto the iMac? If so, you've probably borked the system and will have to reinstall it. See:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2186
Also, if you restored applications, it's possible some of those applications are not installed correctly or are not compatible with SL. Printing problems are common among folks who have not updated printer drivers to SL-compatible versions. -
Error code 36 (problems with external hard drive)
I have just upgraded to Yosemite and am now having major problem with my external western digital hard drive. I cannot create new folders and when I hit command N I get error code 36. I also cannot move files from one folder to the next. When I try to move them I get the error message: "The operation cannot be completed because a file of that name already exists" and that simply isn't true. None of the files' names exist in the other folder.
Ok, It appears to be the fault of Western Digital. I ejected the hard drive and then plugged it back in and it said that the drive was broken but I could still read the files and it told me to save the files on another disk and reformat. So it was just a coincidence that I upgraded to Yosemite at the same time that my external hard drive broke.

Problems with External Monitor In XP
Ok, I've got a huge problem with XP on Bootcamp.
I've recently got a Samsung TV which I can use as an external monitor. This works absolutely fine when I'm using OSX, recognizes the TV and can use it as a second screen.
When I try to use the same monitor in Windows under Bootcamp, it works as an extension of my desktop, but not able to mirror my desktop. I want to do this so I can play my games on a large screen instead of a small one.
I've trawled the forums on this kind of problem and found a few answers. However, many of them talk about the ATI graphics drivers. I've downloaded the appropriate drivers and the control center from the website, but to no avail.
People have also said about going into display properties: settings: advanced and selecting the ATI tab. I have no ATI tab.
Also with the Catalyst Control Center, when I try to run it, it tells me that I dont have permission to change the settings and to contact my administrator, even though I am the administrator.
Does anyone have any ideas how I can solve this?
By the way. I'm connecting the external monitor via the DVI on my Macbook Pro to the HDMI connection on the TV.
Many thanks
ChrisMy logic tells me, if you are using a new MBP the way it's designed is that even if you are plugged in at times it will go in battery mode for a few minutes in order to prevent battery damage, than it will recharge. This happens in the background without notice. However, within this couple of minutes you might notice your display screen to sleep because it is setup to sleep in 1 minute or less in the preference under battery mode. So within that window you might have your screen go blank since the entire process takes a lot more than a minute. I hope this helps.

Inkscape/X11 Problems with external Monitor
Hello,
I´m using Inkscape to create vector art on my MacBook Pro.
Since my update to Mavericks I´m having problems with X11. I have the version 2.7.5 of XQuartz installed currently.
After some troubles, Inkscape opens up just fine.
But I cannot drag Inkscape over to my external monitor, which is based to the right of my notebook.
Inkscape simply disappears.
I´m quite the DAU ;-) with Computers and Software, so it would be nice, if you can help me.
Thanks a lot in advance!
Best,
SonjaHow about trying a native Mac app like iDraw http://www.indeeo.com/idraw/

Configuration problem with external Western Digital My Book 2 TB drive
How do I fix a configuration problem with my external Western Digital My Book 2 TB drive which used to both read and write. Something has happened so that the drive is now read only? There is 600 GB of data on the drive that I cannot lose, thus am very concerned about messing around with formatting the drive which is raid 1 and filled with data.
may not like to hear, but I'd skip on MyBook cases, nice looking as they are.
Get a 2nd drive case to recover to.
http://www.macsales.com/firewire
may need to play with the demo Data Rescue 3 from Prosoft
Backup/recover before repair is usually in order
never have one backup set. THREE sets of your data, minimum.
3rd party disk maintenance and repair should be a must and given rather than rely solely on Apple Disk Utility.
Data and system maintenance and recovery plan - should be like practice for sports, arts, military with practice and making sure you will know how and the tools you need - ahead of time
Resetting USB/FW ports, try another if one won't work. When 10.6 came out there was a lot of grinding teeth with external drives not working or mounting.
