Problem with Floppy discs

I am running Solaris 10 x86. The machine has also Windows installed. With my Windows I can use floppy discs without any problem. Under Solaris (after giving volcheck command) CDE displays that floppy is unformated.
1. I tried to format it in Windows, but it didn't help.
2. I tried fdformat and received the following:
fdformat: no diskette in drive /vol/dev/rdiskette0/unknown_format
3. The CDE format dialog seems to do not do any progress while formating.
4. Other floppies also give similar result.
I read that this could be a problem with floppy driver for Solaris.
Please help!
Thank you.

While waiting for reply I searched the internet and found something that will help.
echo 'fdcsense_chng+0x45?W0' | adb -kw
WARNING: THIS ONLY WORKS FOR SOLARIS 10 x86. Using this on Solaris 9 and 8 will hang the system.

No. Apple replaced the disk drive with a solid state drive (SSD) instead. The SSD is faster the old disk drive.

  • Permissions problems with multiple discs in Mac Pro

    Hi.
I have three discs in my Mac Pro. One is the boot drive, which is an SSD, another is a 2TB Seagate and the other is a smaller spare for setting stuff aside. The SSD and 2TB drives are NOT a fusion drive. They work okay but there are problems with permissions and I am trying to figure out what the permissions on each need to be for them to work in close harmony. The user account is on the boot drive but music and photo libraries, for example, are referenced on the big drive.
Permissions on the boot drive show: system - r&w, wheel - ro, everyone - ro...
On the big drive they are: Drieu(Me) - r&w, staff - r&w and everyone - ro. Ignore ownerships is not ticked and I am undecided about this.
None of these seems to be correct. I know how much chaos can ensue if changes are made rashly, so I am loth to experiment but things are wrong enough to need to do something. Does anyone have any suggestions, given I am not sharing the machine with anyone, other than the default public folder.
The spare drive has Drieu (Me) - r&w, system - ro, admin - r&w and everyone - ro!

The Samsung 840 pro SSD boot disc
10.9.5 and later turn ON kext signing, which turns OFF TRIM Enabler. A non-Apple SSD without TRIM cannot eliminate deleted files, so it will eventually become choked with an accumulation of deleted data. Doing the Install under these conditions could add 20GB or more of deleted data, and it could become super-slow.
The 2TB disk [that was the Boot Disk]
that permissions over the whole disc vary. Some files require that I enter the password to move them.
Permissions for different folders vary widely. For example, System Directories are write-locked to you, and moving files from them would require that you authenticate as Admin.
Files transferred from the desktop to this disc require to have the command key applied to move, rather than copy.
The default in a Drive-to-Drive transfer IS Copy. To change that to Move, you must hold the Command or Option key. This is a Documented Feature, and is working as designed. Default for Folder-to-Folder On the same Drive is Move.
I also find that when modifying blocks of files they can suddenly disappear and I have to come out and run round the block before I can go back in to finish the job. It works okay but it is unnerving, despite having a backup.
One or both of those drives may be having problems. What you describe does not sound normal.

Before you go to Lion, just a reminder.  I know you recently moved up to Snow Leopard.  Be sure that everything you were running in Leopard, and now in SL, will work for you in Lion.
Remember, Rosetta and all PPC apps are gone (Word 2004, some versions of PhotoShop etc)  Check the compatibility list before you ditch SL.
As far as your Disk Utility problem, how hard is it to reinstall SL?
I've taken a screen shot of my Utilities folder to show you what you are looking for. The Utilities folder as mentioned above is in the Aplication Folder (or you may have pulled it out to the side bar as well, in which case there will be an icon and the word Utilities in Places in the side bar.

    did you solve this problem?
Im really sorry for making over a year to answer :bonk:but the problem is still there.I have now two hdds(the third one is not functioning with the other two ones on:worship:.I have checked my hdds one hunded times without finding a single error.I changed the PSU with a 750watt corsair but still no light .Ive learn to live with it.Whenever my pc refuses to boot(the bios  doesnt recognize the discs)i open the case and disconnect the  hd im using for storage, boot into windows, shut down the pc,reconnect the other one, boot again and voila!!!! Everything works fine for 3 to 5 days in a row until the nightmare returns.I sent the board back to the store for rma but they didnt find anythin wrong.
The only possitive is that i havent had any  "freezing" experience inside the windows for  a long time now.My pc works flawlessly with one hd so im willing to keep it till summer.

  • MacBook Air problem with Remote Disc

I am trying to upload a disc to my MBA from a shared MBPro.  Remote Disc recognizes the shared MBP and the CD but cannot access the data.  Any suggestions?

Actually the restriction DOES apply to an audio CD.
    From this document:http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2057
"MacBook Air and Mac mini do not support playing DVD movies or audio CD media with Remote Disc. In addition, some discs, such as game discs, may be copy-protected and are therefore unusable. To play DVD movies, audio CD media, or copy-protected discs on the MacBook Air or Mac mini, use the MacBook Air SuperDrive."

    Hi, b.lang4
my guess is that it is a bad disk. I had more often this kind of erratic behavior with cheap CD's. can you confirm with a CD? do you have a batch of different DVDs?

  • Has anyone else experienced problems with the disc burner/driver software not being found?

I am trying to burn music onto a disc and it is telling me that the disc burner/driver software has not been found. Has anyone else experienced this with their MacBook Pro?

SuperDrives wear out - it seems that yours might be on the verge of a mechanical failure. I'd just replace it, buying a new drive from Other World Computing and installing it yourself (because Apple would charge a small fortune).

  • Problem with hard disc.

Hello,I've bought a new Macbook with Retina Display and new hard disc .
The name of the hard disc  is "Seagate".My laptop can not see the hard disc.
And i can not understand where the image of disc must come.

Is it a USB drive? If so, have you installed the recent update?  Does the drive show up in Disk Utility?

  • Problem With Verify Disc Function

I just found out that I should be using Repair Disc Permissions more often that I have been. So I went to Apps - Utilities - Disc Utilities and clicked on the first line in the list at the left of the window. Then I clicked on Verify Disc Permissions, and that seemed to go OK, then I clicked on Verify Disc and got the following messages:
    First Aid Failed
Disk Utility stopped verifying “Macintosh HD” because the following error was encountered:
The underlying task reported failure on exit
I clicked on "OK" and this is what was listed next:
    Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Checking multi-linked files.
    Checking Catalog hierarchy.
    Checking Extended Attributes file.
    Checking volume bitmap.
    Checking volume information.
    Volume Header needs minor repair
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair
(The bit in bold here was shown in red.)
Not knowing how to fix this, I clicked on Repair Disc Permissions, and this also seemed to go along fine, then I clicked on Verify Disc again and got the same message as above.
What does this mean? How do I fix this?
    TIA,
    Sue

  • Problem with bootcamp and windows xp disc

Hi! I've been using mac for about 3-4 years now and I am fairly acquainted with my Macbook pro.
My problems surfaced 2 days ago when a friend of mine opened it up and changed the harddrive to this: http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/seagate_momentus_500gb/
My friend then did a clean install of OS X Snowleopard (not with the OS X-disc that came with my MBP) and all seemed to work fine.
But the problem is that my MBP don't seem to recognize or can't read Windows-installation DVD's. I insert the disc, the MBP reads the disc 2-3 times and then just spits it out. I have tried this with two diffrent Windows XP SP2 discs and one Windows 7 home disc with the same result.
Sometimes though (completely random) it seems to recognize the Windows disc and I can start the Windows installation via bootcamp, but halfway through the installation the disc still ejects.
The funny thing is that I ONLY have this problem with Windows-discs. OS X-discs, media-DVD's and unwritten CD's is no problem at all.
And I have repeatedly "repaired" and "reinstalled" OS X with both the snow leopard-disc and the OS X-discs that came with my MBP but I still get the same result. I have also tried SMC-resetting and doing a "safe start" but it still doesn't work.
    So... Halp? :3

Does the new computers come with floppy disc use capability

    Preed, welcome to the forum.
It is difficult to find a newer computer with a 3.5" floppy drive.  In fact, most companies don't even offer them as an option.  Personally, I don't want any more components in the case than necessary.  I purchased an external 3.5" floppy drive.  Since I have only needed it a few times, it works fine for me.
