Problem with Handbrake/Mediafork

I recently had a new Super Drive put into my MBP, and now Handbrake doesn't let me open a DVD. I recently downloaded Mediafork as well, and it doesn't seem to be working either. The DVD shows up on the desktop, and I can watch it with DVD Player, but Handbrake doesn't show any DVDs in the dropdown menu in the "open" window. I don't know what's going on... If anyone could help it would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks for that idea. I didn't even notice that button, but unfortunately that didn't help. I select the DVD and it says it's scanning title 1 out of whatever but then it stops and says no valid titles found. Any ideas with that?

Problem with Handbrake- only allows 20 chapters to be ripped

I have been using handbrake with no problem, however the chapter bar that allows you to control how many chapters will be ripped only goes from 1 through 20, so all of my movies with more than 20 chapters are cut off. Does anyone know if there is a solution to this? Thanks.

Unless its changed since yesterday, from my own experience, don't believe HandBrake works at the "chapter" level. Enumeration appeared to be associated with VOB files and seems to frequently skip over some "sequential" entries which, in my case, represented entire "episodes" of video program.
Would probably recommend you switch to MacTheRipper for extraction (if decryption is required) and Forty-TwoDVD-VXPlus for accurate conversion at the "chapter" level by track.

Problems With Handbrake

I have used handbrake for a while now and it has been doing a perfect job at ripping my videos. I have done 5 episodes and it has worked great. Now I just ripped a 6th episode and when it finished ripping and I dragged it into the iTunes library, nothing happened. So then I double clicked the icon for the movie and quicktime opened and said something like, "Quicktime does not reconize (error -2085)" or something like that.
So then I opened up Handbrake in the background and quicktime started playing the episode, but it was only 11 minutes long - instead of 1 hr and 12 min...
I noticed that when I went into hadbrake and checked the settings again, under the Picture Settings button it changed from 320 to 304 for the width, even though I said 320 in the beginning.
So what I did was that I tryed to rip a different episode and before I clicked the "rip" button I went to "Picture Settings" and changed it to 320. But then I said close and went back, and it changed back to 304 rather than the 320 it needs to be at.
What am I doing wrong? Are the settings screwed up?

Wait, the maximum iPod bitrate is 2.5Mbps.
The 768kbps figure is for the H.264 encoder, which (unless you are using the hacked HandBrake) does not yet produce iPod compatible video.
iPod and Quicktime Pro use the BASELINE profile for H.264, all other programs to date use the MAIN profile. Therefore, you'll need to set HandBrake to use MPEG-4 video.
If you are already using MPEG-4, then the plot thickens because the bitrate is not the problem.

Problem with Home Sharing. Getting the error "The Requested URL was not Found on this Server"

I recently purchased an iPhone 5. As I do with all of my AppleTVs, iPads, iPods and an iPhone 4 in my home, I connected the 5 to my home network and accessed the shared video library using home sharing. My iTunes library is roughly 85% iTunes purchases, a handful of videos taken with iOS devices, and some video ripped with Handbrake. All of these videos work fine on all devices in my home except my new iPhone 5. When I access the shared video library on my iPhone 5, all of the textual data for all of the videos appears, however, I can only get the iPhone to play 1 video of the dozens in my iTunes library. When I try to play any other, I get the error, "The Requested URL was not Found on this Server."
Interestingly, only one video in my entire shared library displays the artwork associated with it in my iTunes library on my iPhone 5, and that's the one I can stream without a problem. Even more interestingly, that video I am able to stream was ripped using Handbrake (there are a number in my library ripped using Handbrake, but just this one will stream to my iPhone 5 for some reason).
I'm using the latest version of iTunes (10.7) on my home (iMac) computer (running OSX 10.8.2- Mountain Lion)and of course iOS 6 on the iPhone 5. I've tried resetting my iPhone several times as well as restarting my iMac which holds my iTunes library.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what's going on?

Can you see if you can view index page from a browser on iPhone.
Have you seen live streams working from a different computer...
if not then check if a proper crossdomain.xml file in its place(webroot folder).

No video with Handbrake using Snow Leopard

Hi,
I have a Macbook without Snow Leopard - version 10.5.8
I just got a Mac Mini with Snow Leopard.
My Handbrake ( version 0.9.4 i386) works fine with my Macbook.
I have the same version on the Mac Mini but after encoding I
do not get any video - just a black screen and the audio.
Other people say they have no compatibility problem with
Snow Leopard and Handbrake, but something is amiss with my
setup.
Even when I transfer a video that I have encoded on my Macbook
and which plays perfectly there - does not show any video when
it is transferred to the Mac Mini - I only get the audio.
I also have VLC Version 0.9.9a Grishenko
for info purposes. I read that the newest Handbrake update
requires VLC for something or other.
Would really appreciate any help in this weird matter.

We have a kind of lack of manpower on the current Mac interface of VLC.
The VLC core (in C) and most other plugins work pretty fine, but the OS X GUI (1% of the code of VLC) is not really maintained. It is in Objective-C.

I have a problem with my iPod

I have a problem with my ipod, it's all started during my visit to my cousin's house. My songs suddenly skip around 200 songs within 40 second, and i can't play my songs and my video. I already Restore my iPod but nothing changes. it just keep skipping songs.
any ideas what's wrong, I might send the ipod to the store that I buy.

If you used iTunes or quicktime pro to convert-they do not like muxed files(audio/video are joined in one track). So you get video only.
If you used something else-contact the program site for help since it is not an Apple product, the majority of us probably do not use it.
If it was videora-dump it and get soemthing that actually works. Like mpeg streamclip and handbrake for DVD's.

Problem with H.264 playback

I just converted some home-made movie using H.264 codec in Handbrake. The output file has a dimension of 640 x 352. Interestingly, it would play in iTunes, but will not sync with iPod video.
I thought iPod supported H.264 codec with resolution to up 640 x 480, am I wrong?
Please, help me understand what the problem is!

10.6.5 did come with new kexts (the dates just didn't change because they are using the same directories, but the version numbers for the kexts are all new).
Unfortunately there are no fixes yet - we are hoping that 10.6.6 update will bring new stable drivers, otherwise the fix will be to revert back to 10.6.4

Problems with edits in iDVD

I have a project completed in iMovie and it consists of 3 clips. One with 9 chapters and 2, single chapter clips. I edit out some of the beginning of each of those 2 clips, but when I try to add them to iDVD, the edits do not show and the entire, unedited clip shows instead.
This is part of a gift for a friend. I converted a PAL DVD to NTSC and that was fine. I created menus and added effects and sound to the menus just fine, but I am having problems with the edits of the clips showing up.

I am quite sure that the problem is in my terminology, so thanks for your patience.
I am using the latest versions, with all updates applied, of the iLife '05 suite.
As a video newbie, this has been quite an undertaking for me, so let me backtrack a bit. I have a PAL DVD that I ripped three titles from - the main feature, an interview and preview of another DVD - using Mac the Ripper. I then used Handbrake to convert them from PAL to NTSC and they were saved as .MP4 files. These are the raw, unedited files that I brought into iMovie by dragging and dropping them into the grid on the right side of the main iMovie screen.
I dragged the first unedited file - the main feature - to the bottom of the main window. I marked that with chapters and dragged it back to the grid. I then took the second file - the interview - and made some edits to the beginning and ending points and the dragged it back up to the grid. Same thing with the third file which is a preview.
I then opened iDVD and dragged the files from the media folders which I now know is incorrect.
To correct this, I took my three edited files, dragged them in the order I wanted them to be in to the timeline on the bottom of the iMovie screen. I added new chapter marks for the interview and preview files, then and started my iDVD project using the "share" option from the "file" menu.
That seems to be cleared up, and now my edits are showing, but now, when I start the iDVD part of the project, it splits the "chapter select" menu into two different screens and adds the two "featurettes" to that.
I want to have it set up like this -
Main Menu - Play All, Chapter Select, and Special Features
Chapter Select - shows chapters 1 through 9 to choose from.
Special Features - shows "Interview" and "Preview" to choose from.
I don't seem to know how to get the interview and preview to show up as selections from the "special features" menu that I created. The only way I could do this is to drag the raw files into iDVD, but then I lose my edits.

I ave some problems with the right management for files in the movie folder

There are saome files with toe records of everyone in the right. I can't delete or copy this files without my Admin password. The folder movies where displayed without the triangel in the list option. I have copied all files an folders to an external drive. The Folder Movies have i delete ove my root account. Then I have all files copied zo the new folder who was created automatical when i locked in. Now the problem with the list view ist solved but the rights of the files are not solved. I can change the rights vor the everyone manually for each file. But for more than 1000 files this is not usable.

I Tunes will not play play back files ripped with Handbrake on 10.6.8 Server

I have hundreds of files ripped with Handbrake that play back fine on my Mac Mini and iMacs and Macbooks connected to a server running 10.6.8 (the files are stored on the server). However, when I try to play the files with iTunes on the server machine itself, I hear volume but get a blank screen. The problem seems limited to mv4 files ripped with Handbrake, as my MOV files will play fine on the server.
Any ideas? I tried loading Perian (latest version) on the server machine but it did not fix the problem. Same blank screen.
Just to add, movies download from iTunes (M4V type) have the same issue - blank playback on the server. Only the MOV file plays. All of these files will play when Quicktime is used as a player, just not with iTunes.

My approach to this problem has been to start by setting up the new os x 10.10 servers and just two os x 10.10 clients. I've plodded through setting up the server1 and client 1 and then checking that server2 replicates correctly and client 2 can be deployed and managed via DeployStudio and Profile Manager. At the moment I am using client 2 for my own day to day work to ensure I spot snags before the students do.
Once I happy with the microcosm I've created, it's a matter of syncing /Users on the old and new servers with rsync and telling DeployStudio that the hundred or so clients that are currently running 10.6.8 and are binding to 10.6.8 servers need to be re-imaged with the workflow that client 2 is currently using. (Actually I'll probably do one client per subnet first before hitting the 'Make it so!' switch.)
The most laborious part of the migration for me has been recasting MCX preferences set with Workgroup Manager as 'profiles'. I have never been happy with automated migration for servers. Setting up a server is not particularly difficult and you end up with a clean and documented installation that you understand fully that uses current methods and no legacy settings or obsolete hacks.
I've no idea whether this is the most efficient or best method, but it feels safe to me; even after deployment, until I shutdown my beloved Xserves for the last time I'll be able to roll the whole system back to 10.6.8 within a couple of hours if something goes wrong.

Problems with Videora??

I have been using videora to convert my homemade videos to play on my ipod (why apple even put "convert selection to play on ipod" on itunes 7 is beyond me...cuz it doesn't work). Anyway, just wondering if I should expect any problems with this software and what types of problems to expect.

if you dont mind 320x240 (not the new high resolution avc), use handbrake for windows (free) or NERO 7 ( easy to use and transfer files in one click).
IF you want 640x480, you can do with quicktime.
If you videos are in AVI format (from a DV camcorder) , just open in QUICKTIME and export to the right size. If they are in .vob (DVD) format, you need to convert .vob to .mov and then use quicktime to convert it...

Problems with importing mp4 files into iTunes.

Hi all,
Since a few days I am the proud owner of an iPad 2. When I was looking for a solution to sync my video files (no problems with my pictures nor with my music files), I saw that I had to convert them from .avi to .mp4.
Through this community I learned that there were several free and paid options. Such as handbrake, convertavitomp4.com, etc etc
In the end I have tried around 4, but when trying to get the files into my library of iTunes it fails. In the beginning I did not receive any error message. It just did not work. I tried through CTRL-O, drag and drop. Nothing seems to be working.
Does it have something to do with the fact that I have the newest iTunes (10.5) and the latest OS for the iPad?
Does anyone have The same experience or knows a solution?

I am checking out flex player after your recommendation. However, I have since resolved my problem. I am running windows 7, 64 bit, and discovered that the problem was windows 7 security settings. All my itunes data was on a hard drive that I plugged into my new pc running windows 7. Despite allowing me to access the hard drive in the usual way, I discovered (after some help from someone more knowledgeable) that the problem was that all my itunes data was protected and I did not have "full control" rights in the security settings. Very odd, given that I have only one user account on the pc. And why it could not tell me what the problem was I don't know. But what I did was right click the drive and make sure my user account had "full control" rights and now I can drag and drop movies into itunes. This may not fix your issue but hope you resolve it soon.

VisualHub Problems with Nehalem Mac Pro?

Just got a new 8x2.26 Mac Pro, installed VisualHub, and tried to do a conversion and received an "error opening codec for output stream #0.0". Tried everything I can think of, but keep getting that error. Works fine on MacBooks and iMac, just not on new Mac Pro.
Does anyone have it working? I'd like to at least eliminate compatibility as a problem.
(Handbrake works fine, just not as fast for my workflow so I'd rather get VisualHub going).

In order to preserve VisualHub (or AudialHub) if you need to switch computers, you need to back up two things:
1: The VisualHub (or AudialHub) app itself
2: The conversion engine
To back up the conversion engine, Copy the folder at: /Library/Application Support/Techspansion
...for good measure, you can also back up your Preferences file, containing your registration info in case you lose the original purchase e-mail. It's at:
/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.techspansion.visualhub.plist
...or for AudialHub:
/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.techspansion.audialhub.plist
As far as I can tell, the two programs will continue to work in Snow Leopard, but I obviously can't predict the future or what Apple will do in it, though.

A problem with threads

I am trying to implement some kind of a server listening for requests. The listener part of the app, is a daemon thread that listens for connections and instantiates a handling daemon thread once it gets some. However, my problem is that i must be able to kill the listening thread at the user's will (say via a sto button). I have done this via the Sun's proposed way, by testing a boolean flag in the loop, which is set to false when i wish to kill the thread. The problem with this thing is the following...
Once the thread starts excecuting, it will test the flag, find it true and enter the loop. At some point it will LOCK on the server socket waiting for connection. Unless some client actually connects, it will keep on listening indefinatelly whithought ever bothering to check for the flag again (no matter how many times you set the damn thing to false).
My question is this: Is there any real, non-theoretical, applied way to stop thread in java safely?

Problem with Threads and a static variable

I have a problem with the code below. I am yet to make sure that I understand the problem. Correct me if I am wrong please.
Code functionality:
A timer calls SetState every second. It sets the state and sets boolean variable "changed" to true. Then notifies a main process thread to check if the state changed to send a message.
The problem as far I understand is:
Assume the timer Thread calls SetState twice before the main process Thread runs. As a result, "changed" is set to true twice. However, since the main process is blocked twice during the two calls to SetState, when it runs it would have the two SetState timer threads blocked on its synchronized body. It will pass the first one, send the message and set "changed" to false since it was true. Now, it will pass the second thread, but here is the problem, "changed" is already set to false. As a result, it won't send the message even though it is supposed to.
Would you please let me know if my understanding is correct? If so, what would you propose to resolve the problem? Should I call wait some other or should I notify in a different way?

Thanks DrClap for your reply. Everything you said is right. It is not easy to make them alternate since SetState() could be called from different places where the state could be anything else but a status message. Like a GREETING message for example. It is a handshaking message but not a status message.
Again as you said, There is a reason I can't call sendMessage() inside setState().
The only way I was able to do it is by having a counter of the number of notifies that have been called. Every time notify() is called a counter is incremented. Now instead of just checking if "changed" flag is true, I also check if notify counter is greater than zero. If both true, I send the message. If "changed" flag is false, I check again if the notify counter is greater than zero, I send the message. This way it works, but it is kind of a patch than a good design fix. I am yet to find a good solution.
