PROBLEM with Importing video to an external drive

I am unable to import video directly onto an external drive. Whilst the ext drive shows up fine in Finder, I do not get this option on the import drop down menu. Yesterday i spent an hour with the Genius guys in the Regent St Apple Store. They both said that they'd done this before, but were both unable to get it to work on their hardware. It appears it should work, but doesn't!! We tested on mac formatted ext drive so it wasn't a pc formatting issue with the drive.
The guys at Apple said maybe it was a problem with a recent update to imovie which to me sound unlikely!
I use the latest version of iMovie 09, Snow Leopard & a Mac book (2yrs old)
Any ideas really appreciated
Thanks in advance

Several things are not officially supported by hardware and software manufacturers, but that does not prevent them from working very effectively. I have used LaCie firewire drives on many occasions on the same firewire bus as my DV source without any difficulty. I think that the settup that you propose will be potentially more problematic than using the same firewire bus. The reasoning for this opinion is that USB does not constant guarenteed bandwidth where firewire does. Theoretically speaking USB sould work under optimal conditions and there are some people using it, however I have heard of far more problems with the USB drives than firewire.
Things to look for in an external firewire drive include an oxford 911 or better bridge board and a drive speed greater than 7200 RPM. I have used 5400 RPM drives without any problems, but others have had problems with these as well.
Canon cameras have several quirks that have proved problematic when trying to integrate them as a source into video production settings. You may want to invest in a stand-alone deck or alternate brand camera to import your footage. This does not mean you can't try to use the Canon as a source. Several people do on a daily basis without difficulty. I would recommend trying what equipment is most easily availablr to you and determining what works best with your configuration.

  • Problem with a Toshiba PX1267E 320 external drive

    Hello all
I have a problem with a Toshiba px1267e 320 external drive, when all was ok with it I would switch on and the blue led would come on and change blue /violet as it was found on my laptop, a small vibration could be felt if I handled the case indicating that the d/d motor was on.
On that fateful morning I switched on did an explore in my computer and found no ext drive, checked the drive blue led on touched the case could detect no vibration, unclipped the drive from the case put my ear to it heard faint clicking.
I removed device and connected to caddie, this time I could feel the motor going, connected to laptop, new hardware found did my computer explore and found no drive, checked device manager and found it so I uninstalled and reconnected usb with same result.
I am not sure what do next.
I had a word with computer shop if they could recover a while I wait they said at least a 6 hour job if possible (dont want to leave at shop)
Bought me another western digital same model no and also new power supply to try swapping the electronics board just in case therein lies the fault /or possible us power/s but I am clutching at straws here.
Any of you guys here got anything like this happen ? any suggestions?
I am curious to know what they would try in the shop to recover although he said he couldn't guarantee results.
I would welcome any helpful suggestions (not throw it in the bin)

I think the external HDD is dead
Maybe its a head crash this would explain the faint clicking and other noises
Unfortunately, I such case you can do nothing

  • Problem with importing videos from Aperture

I was able to import videos from Aperture within FCPX.  However, when I tried to import some older videos, the following error message appeared:
    "No importable files
None of the selected files or folders can be imported.  Change the selection and try again."
I noticed that all the video files older than about three months didn't work, and all the newer files worked, regardless what camera it was from (D800, iPhone, m4/3 camera)
I opened up the aperture library package and compared the permission for one video file that I could import, and one that I couldn't.  They have the same permissions, so it isn't a permission issue.  I tried exporting the problem video from Aperture and importing it into FCPX, and it accepted it.
The other thing I've noticed that is for the files that I imported from Aperture library, the video files in the Original Media folder are only around 250 KB.  It seems that they are only aliases.  All the more reason I need to find a way to drag videos from Aperture into FCPX, as the files aren't duplicated.
Does anybody know a solution to this problem?
    Thanks a lot!

Aperture drag'n'drop export only creates reference movies (which can break!)
    Background of your issue:
If you simply drag your video file(s) from the Aperture window to the Desktop (in my case a MP4 from my Galaxy Nexus, the original having 70 MB), Aperture does not copy the master or the version file, but instead it creates a reference movie file, which is a very small video container file (in my case: MP4, 26 KB) with no AV-content but only a reference to your master video file in your Aperture library, ~/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary/Masters/YYYY/MM/DD/YYYYMMDD-hhmmss/filename.
So by principle it acts like an "alias", but technically it is not a filesystem alias (filepath, ID within filesystem (inode), metadata), but a so called reference movie. If you meanwhile deleted/manipulated the master file from the Aperture Library, or changed something from the filepath (volume name, home directory name, etc) import in Final Cut Pro will fail of course, as it loads a mere reference movie, and fails to load the AV-content, as the master movie file cannot be found at the given filepath anymore.
Solution 1 (for the "tidy" users):
Make sure the filepath to your Aperture Library does not change (volume name, user name, custom library name), and hopefully Apple does not change their Aperture Library filepath scheme in future updates. Then the reference movie will remain pointing to a valid master file.
    Solution 2:
    In Aperture, select the file(s)
    File > Export Master (CMD-SHIFT-S)
Save file(s) to your desired destination
Import them into within Final Cut Pro
Of course this creates unnecessary duplicate content, which is specially painful with video files, which tend to be large.
    Solution 3 (advanced users):
Locate the master file (within the Aperture Library.aplibrary bundle) and import that in Final Cut Pro.
The import dialogue of many Mac OS X apps does not allow browsing into bundles.
A possible work around is to open the bundle in Finder (right click > Show package contents), locate the file, and then drag'n'drop it onto the import dialogue of Final Cut Pro.

  • HT201475 Problem with gray screen after connecting external drive

I attached a LaCie external drive to back up photos and iTunes on iMac running Mountain Lion OS. I'm trying to resize partitions to back up but after attaching I'm having problems restarting and/or shutting down. I keep getting gray screen And have to shut down to start up. Now my external drive only shows one partition on desk top and I can't access in disk utility at all.

  • Problems with iMac G5 and LaCie external drives

I have an early iMac G5 (without iSight), running OS 10.5.2. I've had a 250GB LaCie external hard drive for about a year now, and it worked fine up until a couple weeks ago, when I got this message:
    Disk Repair
The disk "External HD" was not repairable by this computer. It is being made available to you with limited functionality. You must back up your data and reformat the disk as soon as possible."
I was unable to save anything to the drive after this, including altering files already on the drive. Long story short, I bought another LaCie drive, because I needed more space anyway. I got the 500 GB model, moved everything onto it, erased the old drive, and then I had two working drives. I've since only been using the new drive, but just a few days later, I got the same message again, and am having the same problem, but this time for the new drive. I'm not a computer-savvy person, so I have no idea what could be causing this. This happened not long after updating to OS 10.5 from 10.4 - I'm not sure if this could be related. Can anyone help?

One thing to look out for is the power source. If you have a huge octopus of power cords plugged into one outlet, the drive may not be getting enough power to operate properly. That would explain why the same thing happened on two separate drives, both recently. You may have added something new to the +power strip+ that is overtaxing the available power draw.
Someone I know had this issue. It never occurred to him or me to consider this possibility. His external drive was regularly getting disk directory errors. I initially thought the drive was going bad, but once we distributed the power cords to two power strips connected to different outlets, the problem did not recur.
Your problem may be something else, but it sounded too familiar to not mention my experience with the power cord octopus monster.

  • Problems with importing video tape into iMovie '08

I'm using a canopus advc 110 to import video tapes from a vhs recorder into iMovie. BUT, the process often stops after only a few minutes when I still have a long way to go. I'd like to be able to leave it to work for 20-minute chunks (longer if possible, but I think that's about the limit), but it keeps stopping after a few minutes. When I come back in the room, it keeps trying to import (time in upper right corner keeps going) but had quit earlier according to time on the lower center of the iMovie screen. This is adding to my frustration and time, which is limited. Any suggestions??

The canopus advc 110 will work IF you have a perfect tape.
Look at the Grassvalley ADVC300 it has the ability to compensate for bad tapes. Using Line Time Base Correction (LTBC), ADVC300 instantly cleans, stabilizes and preserves old VHS and Hi8 videos in clean DV format. No need to monitor, just start and forget. Fast forward the tape all the way and then rewind all the way before import will never hurt.
The program that comes with the ADVC300 has some nice filters that can improve video and audio of the source material. The ADVC300 will take Audio and Video from any source and convert it to FireWire (iMovie will treat it like a camera).
    http://www.grassvalley.com/products/advc300
The ADVC300 is for anyone who wants to do editing and is concerned about quality of color and speed, for the novice it is an incredible gizmo that will restore VHS tapes to a state close to the original fixing midtones, highlights and shadows on the fly. Not only can you simply convert analog to digital you can actually manipulate the signal going in (if you want to).
A bit pricey bit it WORKS.
I would use iMovie 06 with iDVD 08/09.
iMovie 08 and 09 uses 'single field processing' meaning every other horizontal line of the video is thrown out, which reduces the sharpness of the footage. iMovie 06 uses ALL of the image to form the video.
Your workflow is editing DV clips and making DVDs, so iMovie 06 is better suited. Your movie will arrive at iDVD in DV format, which is an ideal match for making a DVD: same resolution, same pixels aspect ratio, and original quality. If you share your movie from iMovie 09, it gets re-rendered at 640x480 or less, and then iDVD upscales it back to 720x480. The end result is obviously not as good.
iMovie 06 and iDVD 08/09 is a "lossless" combination.
iMovie 09 is a wonderful programs assuming that you're using it for what it was designed to do, assemble videos to share on the Internet.

  • Problems with importing video frames to layers

Whenever I try to import video frames to layers (File > Import > Video Frames to Layers), the little preview box of the video doesn't show up, and when I click "Okay" it only creates a bunch of solid black layers. I'm using .avi videos, which should be compatible. Can anyone help me out? :/

Also, you can make sure your system is 64 bit capable by:
Open Performance Information and Tools by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Performance Information and Tools.
    Click View and print details.
In the System section, you can see what type of operating system you're currently running under System type. Under 64-bit capable, you can see whether you can run a 64-bit version of Windows. (If your computer is already running a 64-bit version of Windows, you won't see the 64-bit capable listing.)

  • Compatibility problem with Imported videos taken from Galaxy S2's Camera

    Hi,
I have several video files taken from galaxy s2 in various sizes ( 720*480, 1280*720,...).
I imported them to iPhoto'11 on my mac with other photos successfully but failed to sync them with my iPad through iTunes.
It said "The video format is not supported by the iPad"...
I checked the video files with MediainfoMac application and they're encoded with H.264 which is supported by ipad.
I even converted them with avidemux ( copying video, re-encoding audio with FAAC) which used to work for many mkvs and avis, but syncing them also failed...:(
I know I can sync them if I re-encode whole file, but still I can't understand why the mp4 video file from galaxy s2 are not compatible with ipad!
Here's a file information taken from MediaInfoMac application. Please someone let me know why this file format is not supported by ipad...

    Tim, that's a good thought.
The Mac I hooked the iPod up to is running iTunes 4. However, I did not sync the iPod to it, I answered "No" to all queries to sync to the computer.
This of course doesn't mean that the presence of iTunes 4 on the Mac didn't screw up the iPod, but I think that would have to be considered a bug that should be fixed since you ought to be able to recharge your iPod on any computer's USB port without screwing up your library regardless of what version of iTunes it is running as long as you don't attempt to sync the two machines. Hopefully someone from Apple will look into whether this is indeed the problem and if so, fix it.
Interestingly, I discovered my music videos and tv shows under the /Music/Playlists/Purchased (but NOT my purchased music!), and I can play the music videos back that way, but it only plays the audio and the first frame of the video as if it were album art. The tv shows won't play back at all, apparently.
I suspect you are correct that iTunes 4 accessed the iPod without permission and screwed things up. Hopefully Apple can fix that since I regularly visit people who don't keep all their software updated to the latest versions due to having dial-up internet or other reasons (which, after all, aren't really my business).
    Thanks for the help.

  • Problem with importing video

    Hi !
I'm using Premiere Elements 10, over win XP sp3.
I started editing video about a month ago to create family video and it woked perfectly,
last week, i captured a 16 minute long video from a panasonic mini dv camcorder using windows movie maker (i don't have a firewire card, and it worked fine over USB cable)
the movie is 16 minutes long, and weighs about 3.5 GB.
when I import ir to PE it says its 2 hours long and 16 minutes, and it dosent show any video, the sound does work.
the video works well on any other player, including the organizer, which comes with PE.
i read the help here and couldt find anything more than looking with G spot, and re-installing PE and K Lite Codec Pack 9 full, nothing worked so far...
print screen of h2:16:24  in PE :
how can i make it work ?
    Thank you !
    Jhon

I suggest uninstalling K-Lite and reinstalling PRE to see if this makes any difference. Others have reported that some Codec packs replace the default codecs PRE expects.
You should be able to capture directly to PRE over USB using File> Get Media from>  Files and Folders - although I go along with Steve, $15 should get you a FireWire card and cable and you'll be guaranteed the best quality input. e.g kit (card and cable)  for £10.00.
If your camcorder settings allow you to select MTP mode for your USB connection you could import the clip using the Elements Organizer:  File> Get Photos and Videos> From Camera or Card Reader. Your camcorder should show as a device. In my example both my DSLR (photo capability only) and my Compact (photo and video) show as valid camera devices over USB.
    Cheers,
