Problem with Internal Fan

Within the last couple of days my fan has been making a noise much louder than usual. The computer does not receive any direct sunlight and never feels hot to its touch. This has just happened all of a sudden. Other than that, it starts up and everything runs how it did before. What should I do?

I would definintely verify that it is the fan making the noise. How old is your iBook? If it is 2 1/2 years or older, there is a possibility that it is your hard drive. Check to see if the noise seems to be coming from the vent at the back (at the hinge), or on the left side (there should be a small vent by the audio-out port).
Alternatively, you could boot from the "Apple Hardware Test" disc and run the diagnostic.
My iBook G4 started making really weird noises, at first I also thought it was just the fan, but it turned out to be a major Hard Drive issue, which required replacement.

  • Problem with internal speakers of MacBook Pro

    Hi,
I wanted to know if anyone have experienced a problem with internal speakers of Mac Book Pro. In my MackBook the Internal speaker volume goes down automatically. I checked the System Preferences>Sound>Output , from there I check that it is in the middle ( Balance) However, the problem is still the exists. Just for testing I played an audio file and I moved the bar toward the right speaker it is the same and when I move toward the left speaker the whole sound goes off . Looks like one speaker stops working completely. Then I checked the Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup > Configure Speakers  from there I checked both left and right speakers and the channel frequency is fine. Still same issue.  I have no idea what is going on , I really need your suggestions to get this fixed.

  • Problems with G5 fans coming on...

I have a very early Power Mac Dual 2GHz PowerPC G5 running OSX 10.4.11 which has started having strange problems... For apparantly no reason all the fans come on and stay on - this can sometimes be resolved with a restart, sometimes not, in which case I need to shut the machine down - after which it will sometimes not reboot the first time (gets as far a blue screen then hangs) - I then need to unplug it from the mains for 10 mins or so, afer which it will start up normally.
Looking into the problem I have discovered this message in the system log every time it happens:
    Jan 10 22:01:19 teknomage kernel[0]: AppleMaxim6690::readI2C error (0xE00002C2) I2CAddr = 0x98, subAddr = 0x01
    Jan 10 22:01:19 teknomage kernel[0]: AppleMaxim6690::getExternalTemp read temp failed!
I have also started running a temperature & hardware monitor to try and get to the bottom of this and have discovered that all my temperatures show a flatline when the fault is about to occur. If I then restart the machine, all fans will be running. If the machine starts up with all fans running. On one occasion, CPU A showed a flatline temperature of -6.1 degrees  for several hours (with the machine working just fine!) and the machine restarted into all fans running mode after this.
I have tried both replacing the battery and resetting the PMU - which appeared to fix the fault for a few days, it then recurred.
The machine also will not sleep properly - in that it won't always wake from sleep and needs a power off and reboot - which sometimes occurs with all fans running.
Apart from that the machine works fine - all my software works etc even when all fans are running.
Any ideas as to the cause? I've not changed the hardware (except to replace the battrery when the fault first started) or software for over a year. Is it case of a failing logic board or could it be something else? Any ideas on how to resolve this?
Is there any problem in running the machine when the temperature monitor is showing flatline temperatures for all sensors - or is there a lower level system that will protect the machine should temperatures get too high (maybe by switching to all fans running?)

An update to my G5 fans problem - the problem got worse, with trouble booting the machine at all. It would sometimes take up to half a dozen attempts to get a chime and then a boot :-( Sometimes all the fans would come on after a few minutes, sometimes not at all day. Sleep mode stopped working completely. As the problem was getting worse and worse, I gave in a bought another, refurbished machine identical to mine, swapped over my disks, extra memory & SCSI card and everything on tha machine works just fine :-)
I may try to further diagnose the problem with the old machine later on.

  • Problem with internal HD upgrade- Flashing "?" over HD icon on startup

Last weekend, I installed a Western Digital 250GB internal IDE 2.5 inch drive (WD2500BEVE) to replace the internal HD on my 15 inch G4 PB Aluminium (not sure of processor speed, but purchased new in 2004, with OSX 10.4.11). I backed up my existing HD to my friend's MacBook, as a disk image using Carbon Copy Cloner. I was very careful with the installation (using anti-static wristband etc etc). The installation appeared to go well. The newly installed internal HD could be mounted as an external HD of my friend's MacBook (using firewire Target Disk mode). Carbon Copy Cloner copied everything back to the new internal HD without any apparent problems.
BUT THEN... when I disconnected the firewire connection and tried to start my computer on its own, the dreaded 'flashing question mark over hard drive' icon appeared.
Can anyone suggest what the problem might be? Three things I've already excluded are:
    (1) The jumper settings on the HD are correct.
    (2) I formatted the new HD as Mac OS extended (journaled)
    (3) The problem is not with the master boot sector (i.e. the problem is not merely that the computer can see the HD but does not know how to load the system from it). My computer cannot see the HD at all -- when I insert my operating system DVDs as if to reinstall the system, my internal HD does not even appear.
I am not panicking as I can still view the contents of my internal HD by booting it as an external HD of my friend's computer. But there seems to be a problem with my CPU communicating with my internal HD. The core of the mystery is: why can I boot my new internal HD off my friend's computer using FireWire, yet when I start my computer on its own using the operating system DVDs, the computer doesn't seem to recognise the HD whatsoever?
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

Can we establish what model Powerbook you have? Take the battery out and look for the label.
I have a feeling that your PB cannot recognize the 250GB drive, although I was under the impression that the older PBs that could only recognize 128GB would simply ignore the extra disk space. Perhaps the ATA specs aren't all backward compatible, although the Firewire interface can handle it.
Other World Computing can obtusely point out which drives your model can handle, although I don't know it its 100% accurate.

  • New logic board, still boot problems with Turbo Fans

I bought a 2Ghz dual G5 from a guy on craigslist and he told me that the Geniuses at the Apple Store said it had a bad logic board. So I bought a brand new logic board from DVwarehouse.com, and installed it along with a new set of matched RAM from Crucial, a new HD, new PRAM battery, new video card and a new superdrive. The only thing original are the processors and power supply (and fans, of course).
When I start it up, after the chime it quickly goes into "turbo-fan mode", which I have read that means the Op Sys didn't load correctly. Many restarts later, I was able to reset the nvram in the Open Firmware, but that didn't seem to help at all. I also pressed the SMU button (according to Apple's directions), but that didn't help much either.
I've had a few successful boots, but always with the fans going full blast. I though that once I got Leopard loaded onto the HD, then it would calm down with a software update. But before I ever get that far, the G5 hangs. Sometimes the G5 will boot and access the HD but hangs soon after. Sometimes I can get it to boot off the Leopard DVD. But most of the time it just boots and sits there slowly spinning up the fans into turbo mode.
The few times it has booted to access the HD or DVD, the fans go turbo right away. Other times it will boot with a chime, but then it won't access the HD or DVD and I get noting on the display.
I should say that this behavior is almost identical to how it was acting before I replaced the logic board. But how can that be? It should be a new computer, unless the problem is in the CPUs. Is that very likely? How would I find out if the CPUs are bad?
I've been reading alot about the problems I'm having with this G5 and what I've been having seems to be very common. But I've run out of fixes. Is there anything I can do to fix this machine or is it just money down the drain?

my iMac 20" G5 experience since December 2004, even though I love this machine,it has gone through 3 power supply (661-3350) replacements and 3 logic board replacement since late 2004. Pretty crazy for a single machine but I still love it. The last logic board replacement did NOT fix my boot up problem, as I expected, and the genius finally agreed to replace the power supply and that fixed it. SO: My recommendation to you is "replaced the power supply" here is one place you can get one: http://www.dvwarehouse.com/Power-supply-180W-for-iMac-G5-20--100v-661-3350---614 -0353-----NEW-p-25613.html

  • MSI P55-GD65 - Problem with automatic fan control.

    Hello.
I wish to share story of my fan speed controller.
Lately I've upgraded my machine to modern specs (look at signature) and I was quite happy about that.
It worked flawlessly for about week.
My H/W Bios settings was - CPU Smart Fan Target = 60°C and minimal fan speed 50%.
I was amazed how nicely GD65 maintained between heat and speed.
Yesterday, I've noticed that my fan is really quiet all the time, even when gaming (before it accelerate speed while hardcore gaming settings). I was quite content about that, until my computer crashed due to overheating while playing Battleforge match.
After reboot I've ran Intel BurnTest and HWmonitor. OH my, what was my surprise when I saw that fan speed is always 50% and do not speeds up when cores are heating up!
I started to checking things out. What I've discovered:
-(CPU Smart Fan ON) Fan is always at minimal speed given in BIOS. It doesn't accelerate even if CPU is burning.
-(CPU Smart Fan ON) Fan speed cannot be controlled by any program (like SpeedFan).
-(CPU Smart Fan OFF = 100% fan speed) Fan speed CAN be controlled by program like SpeedFan, which saves me from fan buzzing.
I've try to fix that by:
    -Checking cables.
    -Clearing CMOS.
    -Updating BIOS to 1.6.
    -Praying.
    And still nothing.
    My conclusion:
Fan speed cannot be change when Smart Fan is on, it locks fan speed at minimal speed given in bios.
Now I just hoping that this is somehow stock fan fault, new Zalman CNPS 10X QUIET is in delivery.

No problem here with Target 55° and Speed 37.5%.
Fan runs at 1330 below 58° and 2050 above which is max.
The CPU is running at 3050 MHz because of XMP 'overclocking'
Have reverted to BIOS version 1.3, due to XMP problems with other versions.

  • MSI CD53, i5 750 - Problem with CPU Fan Speed

    Hello
I have problem with this counfiguration: i5 750, MSI CD53 Motherboard.
I Have processor overheating poblem. I noticed that processor easly can go up to 90C.
I check phisycal installation, and all its ok.
After that i check RPM of CPU FAN and i noticed that it cant go over 1000 RPM, so propably this is problem.
In MSI Control Center maximum i can set 1000 RPM.
I read that CPU FAN can go up to 3000 RPM.
Maybe i have something wrong set up in bios? What can i do with this?

Which board exactly do you have?
What is your current BIOS Version?
What kind of CPU-Fan are you using (3-Pin or 4-pin PWM (four wires) and which connector is it attached to?
What are your current fan speed/control settings in BIOS Setup?
    Quote
I check phisycal installation, and all its ok.
Physical installation is one thing, but what about thermal paste (have you used a PROPER amount (too much thermal paste has the opposite effect))?
    What about your case ventilation?

I noticed that processor easly can go up to 90C.
Please check the CPU's core temperatures with CORE TEMP, REAL TEMP or HW-MONITOR!

  • DOES ANYONE HAS A PROBLEM WITH A FAN NOISE LIKE A METAL BEARING

I want to know if there is a problem with some of you that have a 20 inch early Imac I got this imac last june and now I begin to hear a hizzing noise like if it was a fan bearing or something.

The drive is in the area where the vent grill is above the plug. There is a very low level disk "activation" noise (sort of a faint ticking type of sound) whilst it is working but then stops, where as the fans again very low noise can be heard all of the time - just. I sit about 650 to 700mm from the machine.
The drive is only a manmade item and occasionally one will start to fail early in life. Today is unlike the old days where a vari-speed floppy drive could need changing every month if worked in a commercial environment and a hard drive wasn't much better.

  • Bizarre problem with internal drive

I have a 15" G4 PPC 1ghz Powerbook with 1gb SDRAM. A couple of years ago the hard drive failed. I bought another and replaced it, only to find that there seemed to be a problem with the new one as well. To cut a long story short: I needed a working machine, so mothballed it and bought a new one. for various reasons I'd now like to get it going. So...
Yesterday, I started it up. As expected it couldn't find it's own drive and just gave me the grey screen with the file/question mark icon. I shut it down and plugged in an external firewire enclosure containing a working 60gb drive with a full bootable OS installed (for brevity I'll call this Drive 1 from now on).
I started it again and it booted from Drive 1. It worked fine. I then shut it down, opened it up and replaced the internal Drive with Drive 1. I put everything back in place (being careful to make sure the drive was properly connected) and hit the on button. Again the file/question mark icon. I tried booting whilst holding down the "c" key. Didn't help.
So, I then plugged in another Firewire bootable drive (Drive 2). It booted from Drive 2 no problem. So, at this point I'm thinking, "Well, I've probably damaged the hard drive connecting cable - better get a new one". Never-the-less I thought I'd run a few test. And this is where it gets slightly bizarre:
I stuck in the Apple Hardware test disk, shut the machine down, removed Drive 2, started it again then ran a full hardware check, it told me: Airport - passed, logic Board - passed, mass storage - passed, memory - passed, modem - passed, video ram - passed. As there was no other Drive present this means it was detecting and okay-ing Drive 1, right?
I shut it down replaced the firewire Drive 2. Re-booted. Then opened "About this Mac". Under ATA it clearly shows a FUBITSU 55.89GB Drive. Which is Drive 1. (Drive 2 comes up under "Firewire" as SMARTDISK CORP).
The details given for Drive 1 are as follows:
    Capacity: 55.89 GB
    Model: FUBITSU EHT2060AT
    Revision: 0124
    Serial Number: FN4****B55
    Removable Media: No
    Detachable Drive: No
    BSD Name: disk1
    Protocol: ATA
    Unit Number: 0
    Socket Type: Internal
    Low Power Polling: No
    Mac OS 9 Drivers: No
    Partition Map Type: Unknown
    S.M.A.R.T. status: Verified
I also looked in Disk Utility. In the column on the left, at the top it shows Drive 2 with the Firewire icon. As per usual, it shows twice, once a the top with the manufacturer's name and again underneath with the name I gave it when I formatted it. If you click on either, it offers you all the usual options for Verifying and Repairing Permissions.
Underneath that is a listing for the Drive 1 with the Internal Drive icon. This it shows only once - the listing with the manufacturer's name. If I highlight it the verify/repair options are all greyed out and unavailable.
The last thing I can think of that may be of any help is that if I open carbon copy cloner it only only shows Drive 2 and doesn't pick up the internal.
Could it be a partially damaged cable? Meaning the machine sees the drive but can't use it? Any ideas would be most welcome.

    <Edited by Moderator>

Hi does sound like the cable but did you try running the hardware test CD with the internal drive installed and did it report it? These you could try while waiting on a new ribbon cable.
Also in the system profile was the internal drive selected as boot drive, you can set this using the OS X installer disk by booting from it.
Long shot, is your PRAM battery good? If not that might be the problem, does your date and time stay correct or does it need to be reset on bootup? If it's dead the PowerBook might not be seeing the internal drive or perhaps as I've seen on some PowerBooks it takes a few seconds to a minute for the PowerBook to go down the list and find the bootable drive so guess the final question was were you waiting long enough?

  • 3000 J - Problem with Internal Modem

    Hello,
I still live in the 90's and use dial-up service to access the internet.  My computer isn't recognizing (or there is a problem with) my modem.  I receive "Error 797" when trying to dial-up as I usually do.
The modem is HSF2014 56K Data Fax Modem.  Is there a way to obtain the driver software from Lenovo on CD-ROM, so I can try reinstalling?
    Thanks in advance!
    Ryan

    Hi again,
It's difficult for me to offer anymore than generalized advice but I'll try to be helpful.
I'd start by removing the existing modem and restarting the computer.  One of the error messages mentioned PCI Slot 1.  This is probably the modem.  If ALL the error messages go away it's a pretty good indication that the modem is the problem and replacement is in order.  I would attempt simply re-seating the modem in it's slot first however and restarting.
I'm pretty sure that the proper drivers would be found automatically for the existing modem.  If not, there's a rather generalized Readme file and a program called HXFSetup.exe which is probably the program you would need to run if required.
While you're in the computer, disconnecting and reconnecting things might be better than just a visual inspection.  Twisting the cooling fan housing on the  CPU with moderate force shouldn't hurt anything and who knows?
If it turns out that the modem is the problem (which I doubt), installing the other modem shouldn't be a problem, assuming it fits and you have the drivers for it.  Again, good luck.
    Jim
P.S.  If you haven't already done so, Google all the error messages and see if there seems to be any common element.  There are diagnostic programs available on the web but I've never found one that helped me with a trouble, perhaps someone has and can make a recommendation.

  • Problem with processor fan.

Hi, since a few days ago the processor fan is not starting when I turn on the laptop, it just starts when I open any windows user session, it used to work fine, suddenly changed and I don't know how to fix it, also when Is not in "High performance" mode the fan just doesn't start till I go to energy options REactive the "Max performance" option in cooling  mode... I'm sorry for my poor explanation, my english is not very good, but I hope is enough to get a little help.
    Thanks.

The fans on laptop computers are thermostatically controlled so they don't turn on when the computer is first turned on. "Thermostatically controlled" is a fancy way of saying that the fans are turned on and off by the heat of the computer. Once the computer gets hot enough the fans turn on. This is a power saving feature to help save on battery power. When the computer's power setting is set for Performance, power is no longer a problem and the fan will come on more quickly and frequently. I have seen where the Bios has been changed to change the fan's heat settings, so you may want to make sure that you have the latest Bios. If the computer is not getting too hot or shutting down because of heat problems, I would not worry about the fan not turning on at startup.

  • Having problems with internal speakers?

    Hello,
I've recently encountered a problem with my speakers. There is also a red light coming out of the audio jack. I found out that many other people are having the same problems with newer Mac versions. I looked at many different discussions and some are wrong and some are right.  Here is a great idea for for making this work: 1) You can use a toothpick. From what I've read, it may work, but be very careful of what you're doing.  2) I've used this idea it works very well. Find a headphone or audio jack cord and plug it in the audio jack many times. What I did was plug it and unplug it very fast. What you're trying to do is confuse the computer for a bit then make it realize that there is nothing in the audio jack. This should work. If it doesn't (for whatever reason) do not use the extra money to get it fixed. If this isn't enough help look at some other discussions, it's how I solve my origional problem with my speakers.

  • Problem with internal update server

    Hello everybody,
after setting up an Adobe Update Server that works fine with updates for CS6,I would like to use this update server for additional Adobe software like Flash Player and Reader.
I think I made every steps as mentioned in the administration guide of flash player: http://wwwimages.adobe.com/www.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/devnet/flashplayer/pdfs/flas h_player_11_6_admin_guide.pdf
    Which means:
I can access the URL: "http://SERVERNAME/pub/flashplayer/update/current/sau/11/install/" with its 3 *.z files (install_all_mac_pl_sgn.z,install_all_win_ax_sgn.z,install_all_win_pl_sgn.z) and "http://SERVERNAME/pub/flashplayer/update/current/sau/11/xml/"  that contains the version.xml-file.
I've also added the mms.cfg file with UTF-8 and the content:
    AutoUpdateDisable=0
    SilentAutoUpdateEnable=1
    SilentAutoUpdateServerDomain=SERVERNAME
    SilentAutoUpdateVerboseLogging=1
Unfortunately there aren't any updates for my test-client.I read something that with these options the "Update Section" in the "Advanced"-tab should be greyed out, but it isn't.And if I'm going to click "Check now" my browser is opening the Adobe homepage.
The problem is that we can't use any WSUS  for this scenario. So we have to deploy the mms.cfg-file by copying it to the clients manually (maybe via batch-file later).
    That's the first problem.
The second one is that we would like to update the Adobe Reader via the same update server. But I didn't find any guide on how to solve this.
    Following information regarding our scenario:
AUSST is running on a Windows Server 2003 Enterprise SP2 with IIS6
Created a new website "Adobe Update Server" and added the handlers for xml, sig, crl, dmg (I had to remove the handler for zip after having problems with it) and added these handlers in the <httpheader>-Section of the webconfig.
Created a new folder with the structure: pub/flashplayer/update/current/sau/11/ install and xml.
Installed Flash Player 11.3 on my test-client
Allowed extensions: All unknown ISAPI-extensions,Active Server Pages,ASP.NET v1.1.4322,ASP.NET v2.0.50727,Front Page Server Extensions 2002,Serversided includes (SSI),WebDAV
I know that I maybe allowed too much extensions because my knowledge with Server 2003 isn't that well.
Sorry for my bad english,I've also tried to open a discussion in the german section but there wasn't any reply yet.
It would be great if there is anybody who could help me with my problems because this features are some kind of "must-have" and I would like to take this big step.
I appreciate every help and post in this discussion as I'm kinda stuck with these problems.
    kind regards
