Problem with JComboBox in j2sdk 1.4.2_01

Hi,
I've got a JComboBox, and I want to change its background color. I use this code:
BasicComboBoxEditor editor = (BasicComboBoxEditor)myJComboBox.getEditor();
editor.getEditorComponent().setBackground(SystemColor.control);
This code works with versions 1.3.1 and 1.4.1, but with version 1.4.2_01 it doesn't.
Can anyone tell me another way to change the background color??
Thanx in advance.

  • Strange problem with JComboBox

    I am having a strange problem with JComboBox, I created a method as a JComboBox factory which returns a JComboBox filled with items. the method works fine and I can see the items in the JComboBox. The problem is when I try using the method myCombo.SelectedItem(String item); the object myCombo does not set the selected item, it just leaves the item blank (or unselected).
    //This method build a JComboBox
    public javax.swing.JComboBox makeJComboBox(String[] items) {
    javax.swing.JComboBox myComboBox = new javax.swing.JComboBox();
    for (int index=0;index<items.length;index++){
    myComboBox.addItem(makeObj(items[index]));
    return myComboBox;
    public Object makeObj(final String item) {
    return new Object() {
    public String toString() {
    return item;
    }

    Couple of better ways to populate a combo with items-
    public javax.swing.JComboBox makeJComboBox(String[]items) {
    javax.swing.ComboBoxModel cbModel = new DefaultComboBoxModel(items);
    javax.swing.JComboBox myComboBox = new javax.swing.JComboBox(cbModel);
    return myComboBox;
    }OR
    public javax.swing.JComboBox makeJComboBox(String[]items) {
    return new javax.swing.JComboBox(items);

  • Problems with j2re and j2sdk's j2re

    OK I know that subject doesn't make much sense, but this is rather hard to explain.
    Has anyone else had any issues with the the Java2 1.4 SDK's jre (The software dev kit along with the jre) and just the 1.4 jre installation files? Basically it's this:
    j2re-1_4_0-win.exe - JRE ONLY
    j2sdk-1_4_0-win.exe - SDK + JRE
    Even though both of these files install the same version of the jre, I'm thinking they are different in some way (either a bug or on purpose I don't know).
    I've been developing some ESRI MapOjects Java applications and ran into this issue when making an applet.
    Installing the jre with j2sdk-1_4_0-win.exe will make the applet work, but just installing the jre itself (j2re-1_4_0-win.exe - the one your web browser will make you d/l if you don't have jre 1.4) will make the applet unworkable.
    The particular problem is with file access. I download the files to the local machine then use them later on in the program. The sdk-jre doesn't have a problem with this, but the jre only version does for some reason. Even after downloading the files and checking if they exist, are readable, and are writable (all three returned true) it still treats the files as nonexistant.
    Obviously this is very puzzling and was wondering if anyone else has had something like this happen to them, and if not maybe Sun should look into this since this has really made my applet pointless (what's the point of using an applet if you have to d/l a 30+ meg file in order to run it vs the 9 meg file that won't run it :) ).
    Not that my applet is Sun's major concern, :) but if this becomes a reocurring problem with others then it should be investigated.
    To answer the first question if any will arise in this thread, yes my applet is digitally signed and it's not just my computer. I have this happen on four other computers until I saw the pattern and installed the sdk on them. Then the applet started to work.

    There is the possibility of differences between the various runtimes, but I can't see them causing the type of problem you note.
    A separately d/l'd JRE can be either an "English-only" version or an "International" version. (The 2 installed as part of the SDK are the "International" version.)
    Both JRE's that are installed as part of the SDK have 2 separate bytecode-to-native compiler binaries - Client and Server versions, selectable via java.exe options. A separately d/l'd JRE has only the Client binary (both English-only and International versions).
    Using the current Plugins, it's not necessary to use the HTML converter (quoted from Sun):
    "Beginning with J2SE 1.3.1_01a, Java Plug-in supports <applet> tags for launching applets and for initiating autodownload of the JRE/Java Plug-in on Microsoft Windows platforms. For more information, see Java Plug-in Developer Documentation"
    I'm of the opinion that some environment difference - classpath, Plugin settings, etc. is causing the difference between runtimes.

  • Problems with xml and j2sdk-1.5

    Hello everyone,
    until i upgraded my version of the jdk (from 1.4.2 to 1.5.0) everything was working fine concerning xml-processing. Now i am having problems with at least two methods that were working just fine before the upgrade.
    public void createRootElement(String s) {
            Element root = doc.createElement(s);
            doc.appendChild(root);
    //that was the first one
    public void addFirstChildElement(String element, String node) {
            Element root = doc.getDocumentElement();
            System.out.println("Rootelement: "+root.toString()+" Element: "+element+" node: "+node);
            try {
                Element nextElement = doc.createElement(element);
                System.out.println("Nextelement "+nextElement.toString());
                root.appendChild(nextElement);
                nextElement.appendChild(doc.createTextNode(node));
            catch (DOMException e) {
                e.printStackTrace();
    //the second onethe problem is now that for some reasong nothing is written into the xml document except "<?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF-8' ?>".
    The result of the System.out.println command in the second method is:
    Rootelement: [Preferences: null] Element: DefaultLanguage node: de
    As i mentioned already everything was fine before the upgrade, but now i really don't have a clue what's wrong...
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance...

    It seems that the toSring() method doesn't print out the complete XMl structure. anymore.
    Only some "debug" information is printed.
    You have to use a transfomer (text transfomer) to print out the XML in text form...

  • Problem with JComboBox in a fixed JToolBar

    Hi,
    I've created a JComboBox in a JToolBar that contains all available fonts. When I click on the drop down arrow I only see the first font and a small part of the second. The JComboBox is dropped down in fact just as far as the border of the JToolbar. All the rest isn't visible to me; it seems that they are behind the other components of my JApplet. However, if I move the JToolBar from it's position (as it's a floatable component), there's no problem at all. So I'm wondering why I can't see everything when the JToolBar is docked.... Can anyone help me?
    Thanks in advance!!

  • Event problem with JComboBox

    Hi, javamen.
    I ve gotten a little problem when working with Itemlistener interface. My combo has 4 options, in which the first one always appears when the applet starts up. Whenever the user DOESNT change it and submit the applet form, throught a button click, the applet gets a NullPointerException. But, if the user changes the option, i always get it, throught my interface' methods(ItemStateChanged). Of course, i know its because there was no combobox event, just a button event (click). So, how can i deal with this situation, since i need to get the combobox option content.
    Regards, Euclides.

    But, this is the question! I dont know how to initialize the combobox' first option. Help me, please! I am using the addItem method as follow:
    MakeJCombo ( JComboBox ComboObj) {
    ComboObj.addItem ("option1");
    ComboObj.addItem ("option2");
    ComboObj.addItem ("option3");
    then:
    public void itemStateChange(ItemEvent ie) ...
    Object origem = ie.getSource()...

    I have a JComboBox in a JPanel (with a gridbaglayout), and I add items to the combobox:

    JCombobox stateCB=new JComboBox(stateList);
    and when I run the application, the states appear in the box, but when I click on the box, there is no drop-down list!
    any ideas?

    Is the combobox Enabled if it is then after adding it to anything set it to true cause i poersonally tried out as u have given it it works and else if it does not show a list then use the setmodel function and set the model to DefaultComboBoxModel and then add the items using a for loop

  • Problem with J2SDK setup

    Hi all,
    I am experiencing problems with my J2SDK setup. I think my problem due to many previous versions of JDKs.
    I have re-installed JSDK1.4.2_03, set the "path" variable to "C:\JSDK1.4.2_03".
    When I compile using "javac" I get an error saying "javac" is not recognised.
    When I compile using "C:\j2sdk1.4.2_03\bin\javac Freq.java" no error is thrown.
    Every time I try to run a java file, I always get the NoClassDefFound error. When run with the -verbose option, files are loaded from C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin - is this correct?
    I have removed all previous references to java in the registry editor.
    I would be really grateful to you (and anyone else) for help with this problem.

    Hi,
    Thanks for getting back to me. I have altered my CLASSPATH and path. Unfortunately it is still not working. I have run java using the full path to the jdk and the jars are loaded in from the right place, but I still get the noclassdeffound error. I have removed all references to CLASSPATH and PATH. When I run with the verbose option (with no ref to the jdk in any variable), the jar files are loaded in from C\program files\java\j2re1.4.2_03! But there is no reference to this location in any variable.My j2sdk is installed in C:\j2sdk1.4.2_03.

    Hi,
    i have a problem handling VARCHAR-Columns via JDBC.
    I.e. by using the JDBC-components of <SunONE Community Edition Update 1> any attempt to store any other then numeric values (like "0", "01", "999" etc.) in a column of type VARCHAR results in an error.
    After entering the string "test" in a JTextArea or JTextField (which is linked by its document to the  VARCHAR-column) i will receive:

    Hi Arnd,
    if I understand right you are trying to insert/update value into a Varchar(1000) column. And if you set a non numeric value you get an exception "java.lang.NumberFormatException", Right?
    Of course this should work with MaxDB. The exception you get doesn't come from MaxDB's JDBC driver. The driver will only throw exceptions that are derived from java.sql.Exception.
    So, I guess the error comes from a layer above the JDBC layer, possibly from the JDBC-components of <SunONE Community Edition Update 1>. This would also explain why you don't see any exception in the JDBC trace.
    Did you have defined any constraints for the input field (JTextArea or JTextField)?
    Hope that helps.
    regards,
    Marco

  • Problem with JDialogs

    Hi All,
    I have a problem with JDialogs in my standalone application. This app pops-up multiple JDialogs, say a stack of JDialogs.
    I have a standalone application which runs as a JFrame, call it JFrame1, which is working fine. JFrame1 pops-up a JDialog, on some button click on JFrame1, call it JDialog1, which is also working fine. Now JDialog1 pops-up another JDialog, again on some button click on JDialog1, call it JDialog2, which is too working fine. But, after I finish with JDialog2 and dispose it my JDialog1 is not working fine, though that is the front dialog at present.
    Any ideas why JDialog1 is not working fine? Am I missing anything?
    Thanks,
    Srinivas.

    Hi,
    I have a component called DateComponent that works similar to a JComboBox. When you click a small button of DateComponent, it pops-up a Calendar similar to the drop down list of JComboBox and user can pick a date from it. It gets closed when it loses focus.
    I have this DateComponent on JFrame1, JDialog1 and JDialog2. The Calendar is not being diaplayed on JDialog1 upon clicking the small button of DateComponent after JDialog2 is disposed. But it is being diaplayed properly on JDialog1 before JDialog1 opens JDialog2. What could be wrong?
    I am using JDK1.3.1.
    Thanks,
    Srinivas.

  • Problem with Listeners/ requestFocus()

    Hello,
    I am new to Java (started learning two months back), There is a problem with the requestFocus() in the focusListener. The program does not return the focus to the object indicated in the requestFocus but it shows multiple cusors!!
    The faculity at the institute where I am learning could not rectify the error.
    Is the error because of the myMethod() which I am using. I had made this method to prove to my professor that we can reduce the code drastically while using the gridbaglayout.
    The code which I had written is as under:

    Would it not be acceptable to check that each field has a value when Submit is pressed. If a field is found with no data then display the error message and return the focus to the empty field. This would solve the multiple cursors problem as you would not need any focusLost handler code.
    If this is entirely out of the question then you will have to override some of the FocusManager methods to prevent the JVM from handling focus for you :
    FocusManager.setCurrentManager(new DefaultFocusManager() {
      // Override FocusManager methods here.
    });Ronny.
