Problem with Linear Dodge blending mode

I cannot get the Linear Dodge blending mode to work correctly on a separate layer. I made a new layer and set the blending mode to 'Linear Dodge,' but when I draw on it, it simply acts like it is set to 'Normal'. There is a distinct difference between when I draw on the separate layer and when I draw on the layer it is supposed to be affecting using a brush set to Linear Dodge mode.

The left streak is drawn on the 'highlights' layer, which is a blank layer set to Linear Dodge blending mode and clipped to 'color.' The right streak is drawn on the 'color' layer (which has the purple coloring on it) with a brush set to Linear Dodge mode.
What am I missing here? I'm trying to get the Linear Dodge to look the same whether or not it's drawn on a different layer.

To get your Linear Dodge layer to behave the same way as your brush set to Linear Dodge try this ... activate your "highlights' layer. Go to Edit/Fill. For contents choose black, for blending choose "behind"
Its only when dodge interacts with black that the burned haloing that you are looking for starts to happen.(this includes color dodge and Linear dodge) - I don't know why this is but it has something to to with the blend mode math.

Color Dodge Blend mode issue in CS4

Alright I'm running CS4 and I'm having an issue using the color dodge blend mode for my brushes. What im trying to do is to create a light effect which I've done this before and I've also run into this problem before and I've solved it but I just cant remember how. I have a dark gradient on my background and i created a new blank layer for my brush, i set the brush layer blend mode to Color Dodge and use a white brush so it will pick up on the gradient. The issue I'm having is it's just painting over the gradient as if nothing is there and it only starts picking up on the background on a ring that I uncover when I go over it with a brush I'll try and provide an image. the white is suppose to turn bright red when it goes over the colored part of the gradient but it only changes its color near this ring on the gradient that I didn't add in. . . it's a weird explanation and I'm sorry cant explain it better but I hope someone knows or can figure out what I'm talking about or experiencing. your help is appreciated

I tried what you said and overlay wont work because it's too dark. I don't know if it was something wrong with my brushes or something else.I opened an old PSD that i had done this same thing with and the color dodge was working on that but whenever i created a new one it would act strange like the image above. then i tried again later and for some reason it started to work. The only thing i did differently was reset my brushes and i created a group and changed the group's blend mode to Color Dodge then put in a blank layer inside the group folder with a normal blend mode and it worked for some reason. I still don't know exactly what i did but oh well it's working now. Thanks for your help. This is what i was trying to do so now you can see how it wasn't working above.

Linear dodge(add) mode different in 32bit than 8bit mode

We are rendering raster passes in cg which need to be added together to reassemble a beauty render.
The layer blending mode being used is linear dodge.
There is a dramatic difference in the result in 32bit mode compared to 8bit mode.
We normally work with adobergb1988 color workspace.
Does anyone know what is happening?
What is the math being used in 8bit mode with the adobergb colorspace?
The problem is similar with sRGB profile.
If set up a linear color workspace icc the 8bit mode behaves just like 32bit mode.
However no one in our facility nor our clients wants to work with a custom linear icc profile.
I would like to preprocess the layers while in 32bit mode to compensate for the gamma space
processing of sRGB or adobeRGB color profiles in 8bit mode.
Ive tried simply using a exposure node with gamma 2.2 but this is clearly not right.

Some time ago I had to solve a problem not unlike this in the combination of light effects in my StarFilter plug-ins, so I actually do have some insight into what you're trying to accomplish.
A way you can get VERY CLOSE to the mixing effect you're seeking is to switch to Screen mode mixing, though you'll have to change the color values in the individual layers in a complex (but consistent) way to compensate for the fact that they've been gamma-precompensated...
Try this:
1. Create a multi-layered test image with several lighting effects and Linear Dodge mixing.
2. Duplicate that image.
3. Change the image to 16 bits/channel, which involves converting the image values to a gamma corrected color space.
4. Change the layer blending to Screen.
5. Make Curves adjustments as shown below to the lighting effects layers.
6. Convert to 8 bit mode for final output to your Photoshop users, assuming they can't use 16 bit mode (which could give them a quality advantage down the line).
Screen also has the effect of smoothing the transition into overexposure, as it will not allow any result greater than pure white. This may help your folks doing Photoshop work on the renderings (e.g., they might be able to brighten an effect without running into nasty white-out). As you can see, the results can be visually almost identical.

I used Curves adjustment layers to clearly show what's needed for the precompensation, but you could of course bake the changes into the pixel values.

Problem with rotation and landscape mode in iOS 8

From start of iOS 8 I have got problem with rotation in my iPhone 5S 32GB as well as in my iPad mini retina 32GB. Automatical rotation to landscape mode is not working correctly. For example if you take the phone or tablet to landscape mode in base display and tap to Safari, Mail, Messages, the app will start but stay in normal mode, not landscape. Then you have to back the phone to normal portrait mode and back to landscape and only then the phone do the landscape mode. I have never seen this problem in iOS 7 or older.
Could you help me anyone with this problem? Or is the problem generally in iOS 8.

Brian, thanks, but it's not a rotation lock issue - at least not relating to the rotation lock setting. It's just a general use setting. Right now i have my iPhone propped in landscape mode. If I now hit the home button, essentially returning to a portrait setting though my phone is still positioned in landscape, then open any other app that supports landscape, that app WILL NOT orient itself to landscape mode. It will stay in portrait mode. The phone has to be physically oriented to portrait, then back to landscape for the app to register landscape mode properly. This is a glitch, and not a rotation lock issue. it ought to be noted that this was not an issue in iOS 7 or any previous iteration.

PDF printer has a problem with Safari in "Reader" mode in Windows7

As shown in the image above. When I try to use the PDF printer to print out a web page in Safari "Reader" mode, the lines near the bottom of each page get squeezed like this. There is no problem with XPS printer. I guess this problem is because of some incorrect settings in Safari or the PDF printer?
My system is Windows 7 Pro. I am using Acrobat X Pro. The page I am trying to print is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_band_structure. This problem only happens when the webpage is adjusted into "Reader" mode in Safari.

I am sorry, I did not make my question clear. I would like to save some web pages only in "Reader" mode, because in this mode all the advertisements are filtered out and the pages look much nicer than the origional layout.
I first let Safari to active "Reader" by clicking "Reader" button.
Then I click "Print" button and select Adobe PDF as the printer.
The problem is the PDF file has something wrong (shown above), and I would like to know how to avoid this problem.

Problem with printing in character mode

Hi
I got a genuine problem in printing continous payslips using character mode with a TALLY6050 printer.
I guess there is a problem with the page setup when i try to print via windows. using different sizes of paper (Letter, A4, A3), the printed data is shifting from one page to another but the shift is following a same trend.
i tried to put one payslip per page using page breaks, but in vain. Three payslips are being printed on one page when viewed in the print perview.
Can anyone suggest any help or tips so that i can solve this problem?

Thanks for your response. I went ahead and filed a Correction Action Request for your orignal issue, since I was able to reproduce the same behavior when I ran your VI. The solution of printing the front panel of a subVI displaying the same graph is a workaround for this problem. Please look at the following KnowledgeBase for more details on how to do this. Problems with environments and transactional mode in the Python API

I have been having problems with the Python API, and I wonder if anyone can comment? I am using DB XML version 2.2.13, with python 2.3 (RedHat linux WS 4.0) and python 2.4 (SuSE 10.1) with identical results. I started with a simple example:

Segmentation faultA bit odd - I can't find anything in the docs about the required arguments to XmlManager.createContainer being different if an environment has been used explicitly.
Anyway, I persevered (my aim being to use transactional mode in Python). Changing the environment and container flags like so:

Segmentation fault(the C++ API docs at http://www.sleepycat.com/xmldocs/gsg_xml/cxx/transaction.html#initializetransaction are incorrect by the way - there is no flag DB_TRANSACTIONAL).
In spite of the segfault, the file "books.dbxml" was produced and could be queried by another application. A transaction log file "log.0000000001" was also written (10485760 bytes long).
Running this last example again with "python -v" showed that the segfault was being produced during the python's cleanup phase:

Segmentation faultCan anyone clarify what is going on? I had been hoping to deploy DB XML as an alternative to something more admin-heavy, but with this behaviour that would be hard to justify. A dirty exit from Python means that no-one will consider trusting their data to this engine (or am I doing something wrong?).

Your first failure -- invalid argument -- was due to an invalid combination of
flags to DBEnv.open(). Along with DB_CREATE you need at least DB_INIT_MPOOL.
As you can see, it worked once you added more flags.
The second, cleanup problem (segmentation fault) is the result of out of order
destruction of objects. This is fixed in the next release (later this year), but
you can work around it by ensuring that your XmlContainer and XmlManager
objects are deleted/cleaned up before the DBEnv object.
Python will cleanup in reverse order of creation, unless you perform explicit
deletions, which is also fine (e.g. del container, del myMgr).
Explicit deletion is always safe.

Problems with MySQL in Slave mode

I have a problem with my IDM and mysql.
This is my envioroment:
I have installed one IDM and has a Database on Mysql. I have a DRP and i have other server of IDM an his database.
The databases of mysql are replicated and are configurated like "Master-Slave"
My problem:
When the production server is down i try to work with the DRP enviorement but the IDM can't access to the database.
My question
When the instance is on "slave mode" the IDM can access to the database??

Problems with Internet in sleeping mode

Hello,
I have a such problem. Approximatly in 10 min after starting sleeping mode my phone can not receive incoming calls from Skype and Viber. There is no problem in a few min after sleeping mode or when a screen is on. I have this problem whenever wi-fi or 3 G connection is. When the screen is on after that I receive messages about missing calls. Swithing stamina off, reinstalling of phone's soft doesn't help. Wi-fi is always on in settings, mobile transfer is on too. Help me, please.

When I set up firmware ...757 through Flashtool, the problem repeated (it was regardless Stamina off or on).
Will settting up of this firmware per PC Companion help? Does problem with battery drain in last firware exist?

Problem with linear chart

Hello.
After two days tray to solve problem, I need your help.
I have problem with presentation some data. Data growning aproxx. linear. I read this data from device. Sometime my .vi not successful read data and in this case my chart have sags to zero (see on picture)

easy solution: when you don't want those zeros in your chart you shouldn't put them into the chart plot!

Problems with Facebook and theater mode

When a photo is clicked on Facebook, the theater mode appears normally but the original page scrolls up randomly. Is there a fix for this?

Problem with cmyk transparency blending in Indesign cs6

Hello everyone! Please give me someone an information about this issue...
All i have in indesign is cmyk color space in all contents, i have set up the transparency blending option to CMYK (edit > transparency blending > cmyk) but when i set the gradient feather on image 1 i have very bad result the transparency is greyscaled not transparent.
I try everything but nothin works for me, please help me somebody.
example 1 show the bad result in cmyk blending transparency
example 2 show the better result with rgb blending transparency with cmyk contents !!!
why i can not set the cmyk transparency blending option? because i have bad result and i do not uderstand that

please explain me the difference in this proces because i do not understand that...
The effect of transparency changes depending on the color mode, that's why you get this warning when you try to change color modes in Photoshop when there is transparency:
I can replicate your problem in Photoshop by layering transparent black on an RGB and CMYK version of the same image (Here are the 2 example files—http://www.zenodesign.com/forum/TransExample.zip) :
InDesign makes things even more complex because you can have different transparent color modes on the same page and you can choose different blending spaces. If color is important I take the extra time to create transparency in a Photoshop RGB file where there's more color contol and I can see the affect of a CMYK conversion and flattening.

Problems With Siri Eyes Free Mode Usage In Cars

I have had the Siri Eyes Free Mode installed in my car since it first became available and am unable to use it because of the inability to enter my passcode by voice command to wake the My iPhone 5S from it's "sleep mode" while I am driving. This would necesstate taking my eyes off the road and hands off the steering wheel to enter the passcode manually or by Touch ID so that I can use the features of the Siri Eyes Free Mode.
This would cause a driving distraction for a potential auto accident and appear to defeat the purposes of having the Siri Eyes Free Mode in cars in the first place.
One (and unacceptable) option is to delete the security passcode and Touch ID capability everytime I use the iPhone in my car and reinstall them everytime I leave my car. This defeats the purpose of having the security features in the first place.
The promotional material which came from Apple with the Siri Eyes Free Mode software suggests placing the iPhone in either the glove compartment and console since Siri Eyes Free will function by voice commands through the car audio system. Obviously this can't be done if the phone is locked in the "sleep mode," since there is no hands-off way to wake it.
The other (and equally unacceptable) option would be to disable the "sleep mode" which would cause the phone to be "on" at all times which would cause a very severe battery drain.
Apple is introducting it's new "Apple Play" software for some new cars this year and this same problem will apply in waking the iPhone from the "sleep mode" while driving.
Does anyone know how to communicate this problem to Apple's software designers so that they can develop a logical "fix" in a future update to iOS 8?
The usual methods of submitting feedback by email to "Apple Cares" or Apple's Technical Support by phone have been ineffective.

My iPhone5S goes into the "sleep mode" after 2 minutes regardless of whether it is connected to power or running on battery. It requires a passcode or Touch ID to wake it, something which is impractical while driving using Siri Eyes Free.
The phone use capabilitiy is available through the car audio regardless, but none of the other features of Siri Eyes Free can be used until the phone is unlocked from the "sleep mode."
Some Siri Eyes Free Mode voice command functions & features include sending & reading text messages & emails; setting up calendar entries, reminders & alarms; checking the weather; posting to social media sites; finding nearby restaurants and points of interest; turn-by-turn iPhone directions via the car's Bluetooth audio; receiving sports scores & stock quotes & more.
The Siri Eyes Free Mode is extra cost automobile software presently available from the dealer for some Honda and GM cars, which allows many of the iPhone functions to be utilized through the car's Bluetooth audio system for voice recognition and response by using the HandsFree microphone button on the steering wheel.

There is a '-N' option for chmod -- it's for removing ACL's.
The best way to learn is not to make random changes that you don't understand, and then ask for help in public forums when something goes wrong. Set yourself a constructive problem to solve; for instance, by writing a shell script. Read man pages. Read UNIX books.
You say you want to grant permissions to the current user. Which permissions -- read, write, execute, all? Do you mean ownership? ACL's? Recursive? Sticky or SUID bits? What permissions should other users have? First learn how to ask the right question, then you'll most likely be able to answer it yourself. Start with the chmod(1) man page. When you understand everything on that page, you'll know quite a lot.
Meanwhile you might be able to repair the damage you'be already done by running the "Repair permissions" routine from Disk Utility. This would be one of the few situations where it's actually useful.
