Problem with MacBook Pro 15 inch - the joint is not sturdy enough

I noticed that the part where the screen joins the lower part is not hardy enough so that it falls easily when I try to do it lying down. Is there a way to prevent this?

There is nothing you can do about it. For some reason, newer MBPs' hinges are weaker. My unit is over a year old now and the hinge has seemed to actually gotten stronger.

    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
         OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
This, Adobe Flash Player 12.0.0.70, is the current version of Flash. It should work with Snow Leopard or later.

The seller should have given you the original disk so that you can reinstall as needed. But it likely was a single-user license (which really means single computer) so you can only have a copy on one computer at a time. If the seller didn't give you the disk he is probably still using the software on his new Mac. Your best option to get any of the iWork apps to use in OS X 10.6.6 or later is through the Mac App Store. You can then install them on any Mac you have that has access to the Mac App Store using your Apple ID.

I am getting no sound on my macbook pro. The sound does not play when I plug in headphones either.  I have tried making it louder quieter, restarting my computer, HELP!

There are many possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried.
    1. Start with the steps recommended in this support article. Don't skip any of the steps. It's the starting point for further efforts to solve the problem.
    2. If your model has an audio-out (headphone) port, and anything is plugged in, unplug it before putting the system to sleep.
    3. If you've installed something called "Memory Clean" or any other third-party software that is supposed to "clean" or "purge" memory automatically, remove it according to the developer's instructions and reboot. You should do that even if the software is not causing the problem, because it's useless.
    4. If you've installed an equalizer called "Boom" or anything similar, update or delete it and reboot.
    5. If an AirPlay device is selected for sound output from iTunes (or from other applications via third-party software such as "Airfoil"), deselect it.
    6. Launch the application "Audio MIDI Setup" by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search and selecting it in the results (it should be at the top.) Select the Output tab. If the Mute boxes are checked, uncheck them. Move the Volume sliders all the way to the right.
    7. If a red light is coming from the audio-out port, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a mini-stereo jack of the proper size. Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by your warranty.
If there's no red light, the switch may still be stuck in the headphone position. Try to free it the same way.
    8. Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard and mouse, if applicable. If more than one display is connected, disconnect all extra ones. Reboot and test.
    9. Boot in safe mode. Don't log in; just reboot as usual when the login screen appears. When you do, make sure the words "Safe Boot" do not appear in the login screen. If they do, the system is still in safe mode and sound won't work.
    10. Reset the NVRAM.
    11. Reset the SMC.
    12. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data. For a possible shortcut, see this thread.
    13. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

  • I make changes on the calendar of my MacBook Pro but the changes do not take and revert to what the entry was prior.

For the past week or so, I have made changes to the calendar on my MacBook Pro. The changes do not "stick" on my MacBook calendar and do not sync with any other device (iPhone or iPad). I just can't figure this out. Anyone have any suggestions?

By everything, I am assuming you have tried resetting the SMC (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964) and PRAM (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379). If you haven't tried this yet, please do!
See the following support document as well: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1367.
The update you're talking about was the firmware update. Hopefully resetting the PRAM gets you up and running. Try resetting it 3 times in a row (hold the keys down until you hear 3 startup chimes).

  • Weird problem with Macbook Pro 15" and Asus PB278 monitor

    Hi there
I recently bought a brand new MacBook pro 15" the one with a dedicated nvidia 750 vid card. However I'm facing weird problems while connecting it to a external monitor Asus PB278 (1440p monitor). I use a mini display port to display port cable.
My problem is: Sometimes it works perfectly, but then if I put the laptop to sleep, sometimes it won't recognise the screen at wake up, at first I tried to restart the system, power on and off the monitor, connecting and reconnecting the cable... nothing worked. I even bought a expensier cable thinking it was probably a low quality cable. I found that then only way to fix this is to connect the monitor with a mini display to HDMI cable I have (won't support over 1080p), and then put the mini display to display port cable again... it is freaking bizarre.
This is very frustrating, I live outside the US and while the retailer will honor the guarantee I'm not sure if this is a Software or Hardware problem, It will take them about 3 weeks to replace my system which is unfortunate due to I have plenty of work to do. I don't want to send it on guarantee just to find out hey... display recognition is broken again. My questions are:
Is there a way to know if this is a hardware or software problem?
I've heard Yosemite is having some issues regarding external displays, is this one of those?
Have you found yourself experiencing this problem? Could you fix it?
Sorry if my english is a bit weird, thanks in advance.

    Hi Gatobolo,
Thank you for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.
It appears that you've discovered unusual behavior with your MacBook Pro and an external display, where you need to temporarily connect a different display adapter before you can use your Asus PB278 again.
I can offer some additional tips to help resolve or further isolate the issue you're seeing.
First, try the following resets to see if they eliminate the behavior:
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
Next, if the issue occurs again, try restarting your Mac into Safe Mode:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
You can find the steps above in this article:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays - Apple Support
If your display is recognized in Safe Mode, or after restarting again, the issue may be due to a software conflict.
Another suggestion mentioned in the article above is to try a different type of display adapter, such as a Mini DisplayPort to Dual Link DVI adapter.
If the issue persists, you can also back up your data, erase your hard drive, and reinstall a fresh copy of OS X Yosemite.
OS X Yosemite: Erase and reinstall OS X
If the issue still occurs after a clean install, troubleshooting the hardware may be necessary.
    Best Regards,
    Jeremy

  • My Huawei dongle on Orange wouldn't work on a recent holiday abroad, either in Portugal or Spain. My local Orange dealer has heard of this being a problem with Macbook Pro's. Is this a fact and if so, can I overcome the problem? Thank you, Mike

On a recent holiday abroad my Huawei dongle on contract with Orange with roaming abroad enabled would not work with any mobile network operators in either Portugal or Spain. My local Orange dealer advises he has had this complaint before with other Macbook users. Is this a known problem and if so how can I overcome it?
    Thank you,
    Stoneybroke

Thank you for your reply ds store.
Orange has a large portion of the European market and I was actually connected to 3G Orange Spain on my roaming IPhone when in Spain, at the time my dongle would not work. Not only that, I checked with Orange UK before my holiday and they not only confirmed the two countries I was travelling to were ok as deals were in place, but also took my money for an additional roaming data bundle, but still no luck.
Twice when in Portugal on separate days of trying I actually connected to their local mobile network provider and managed to download my emails before being disconnected after about one minute. This only occurred when I had re-booted my Mac.
As soon as I returned to England last week the dongle worked perfectly so it does point to the European local mobile provider and how my MacBook Pro talk to one another. To validate this point, last year I used the exact same dongle and sim with a windows PC I had at that time and all worked perfectly well.
I have found similar problems within this forum but no actual solutions that I can find anyway. I just wish I could find a definitive answer to guarantee the combo works next time I am in Europe.

  • Problems with macbook pro

Strongly make noise fans, battery to 98%, is not opened basket and finder!!! Mountain lion 10.8.3

If this is of any interest to you, I will add that I just received my new 2.4 15-inch MacBook Pro on Wednesday (ordered on 7/31). I love it. I also owned five different powerbooks through the years prior to this, so I'm obviously someone who is both enthusiastic about and comfortable with Macs (keep that in mind).
They do list the amount of time they'll need BEFORE shipping, but if that's an issue you can always try someplace like macmall, who can overnight one to you if they have them in stock (last time I checked they did). That does prevent you from making any customized changes to your machine however.
So far, I haven't encountered any of the problems being discussed here. The computer does get warm (just like my titanium and aluminum powerbooks), but if that's a big concern just get a MacBook. That material doesn't transmit heat like these do. I perused these boards quite a bit beforehand to familiarize myself with the situation, like yourself. From prior powerbook ownership, I know to remind myself that this is a place people come when they have problems. I really think Ned's hospital analogy is a good one. Also remember, many of the issues being posted here are caused by something the people are doing wrong or just don't realize there is an easy fix for.
My non-scientific guess at the breakdown of people on the boards is as follows:
60% - people having problems who'd never be here otherwise
20% - super knowledge mac-heads who like to help others
15% - mac users who like to expand their knowledge
5% - people simply working out other issues (anger, loneliness, etc.)

  • PROBLEM WITH MACBOOK PRO 2.4 Dual Core and MOTU Ultralite

    Hello,
I Recently bought a macbook pro to have for my Live appearance.
I also had a motu Ultralite which worked super well with my Pc and with the macbook the first days
One day i had to play live in a club so i connect my soundcard but the macbook wont recognize it coz i cant see the popup window that i get everytime i connect my motu on it...i rebooted the soundcard then the laptop nothing...i started sweating coz my live performance would start in 20 minutes noting came out of it so i cancelled the gig for the moment and played a Dj set instead.
When i got home i connected the card again and was working perfectly till yesterday..So i thought there was something wrong with the Power in the Venue or something like that.
Yesterday i connected the soundcard and again does the same any other firewire device was working properly.
I searched online and saw there is alot of people having the same issue but no solution.can someone tell WHY sometimes it works and sometimes doesnt??its very stupid to have 2 machines with a cost of 2500 euro almost and they dont work well together
    Op system: Leopard 10.5.7
    Motu ultralite Mk2 firmware: 1.15
    motu ultralite driver 1.4.21
    Thank you in advance

Popping in to say that I have now a fully functional Ultralite (mk3) under OS X 10.5.8 on my Macbook.
I have found that people who have upgraded the firmware to 1.15 were having problems (according to the MOTU site this upgrade isn't actually meant for the mk3 anyways) with Leopard (maybe Snow Leopard too?) and needed the 1.00 version of the firmware.
Using the drivers supplied on the MOTU CD, the device would not appear when connected to the Macbook. However, removing these from the system prior to downloading the latest MOTU Universal driver from their website seems to have solved it.
Now after installing the universal drivers from the website the device works without any problems (driver 1.4.23 of MOTU Audio Setup). Hope this helps someone

  • Problem with Macbook Pro 2,66Ghz and 4GB Kingston memory

    Hi all,
    I bought 2x 2GB Kingston memory(SODIMM - DDR2 @ 667MHz) in order to upgrade my MBP.
When I install both modules, the MBP won;t boot. I get a blank screen.
If I use 1 Kingston module at a time (1x1GB(original memory module)and 2GB(Kingston)) .It works fine.
Both of the Kinston RAM modules seem to be working fine, when not installed together, but MBP doesn;t start when both are installed at the same time.
Any idea of what the problem could be?
Is related to my MBP or it has to do with the Kingston Modules?
    Thanks in advance.

Hi, I'm having the same problem on the 2.4 (early 2008 2.4 GHz macbook pro.) I bought 2x 2gb Crucial RAM and installed correctly, but the machine doesn't start up. So, I tried every conceivable combination, but the new 2gb RAM only works when paired with one of the old 1gb sticks giving me 3 gb total.
The new 2gb sticks BOTH work (when paired with old RAM), just not together. The 2gb RAM they sold me shows its speed as 6400 800mHz -- Could the faster speed be the problem? My system profiler shows the 800mHz RAM as 667mHz when it is installed.
D.P. it looks like you have the same mbp as me. I talked to Apple Support on the phone a couple weeks ago doing my own research and learned (i'm not SUPER tech-savvy) that the laptop is 800mhz but will only accept ram of 667mhz because the computer has to be faster than the memory installed in it. They cannot be the same speeds. Don't know if this would cause the problem you are having, though.

  • SSD-problem with MacBook Pro 13" (Early 2011)

    Hi there,
I've tried to use two different SSDs in my MacBook Pro 13" (early 2011). The first one (Samsung 840 Series, 500GB) crashed after two days: the beachball appeared and after a restart there was this question mark-symbol on my screen: no system found. Had to send this SSD back to Amazon. A few days later I've bought a new one, a SanDisk Extreme with 450GB. I've used it for two days, then my system crashed again and after a restart of my Mac I couldn't get any further than to the grey apple-symbol. Even the recovery partition didn't work anymore. Does anyone of you have the same problem with his (or her) MacBook Pro 13" (early 2011) - and any ideas for a solution?

  • Problem with MacBook Pro

I have a MacBook Pro for 2 weeks.
Transfering all data, amail from the Lenovo to MacBook Pro and everything works fine until lunch time today.
Go to the meeting without any problem, return to my desk , lock the MacBook Pro then go out for lunch.
Come back the MacBook Pro is acting very slow, can not open any Applications.
Use Disk Utility to verify, take more than 1 hour to verify and it asks to be repaired?
    Invalid Node structure
The volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired
Error: This disk needs to be repaired... then use Disk Utility to repair this disk.
Click on the Repair Disk Permissiond and it says that it will take 1 day and 21 hours to complete.
    - Is the hard drive going bad?
    - Will I loose all the data?
    - Can Apple recover without destroying my data?
Moving to a Mac with the thought that it was better than IBM but my first impression is wrong....
    Any suggestion or recommendation?
    Thanks all.

Unfortunately if you were to take it into an ARS (Apple Retail Store) They wouldn't be able to assist you in recovering the data, Apple doesn't like to be liable for data loss if something happened and they weren't able to recover your data.
Seems like the issue in specific might be with the operating System, I'd reccomend booting into Lion Recovery (Hold the Command key and the letter R on startup) Hold those keys till you get to a screen that says Choose english as the main language, You'll see Utilities, Open disk utility try to run a repair there, If that doesn't work
I'd reccomend trying to do an Archive and Install, Just reinstall the operating system from this recovery partition, Your data will remain in tact.
If that doesn't work, You'll probably have to make a Genius Appointment.
