Problem with MacBook Repair Extension Program for Hard Drive Issues

I have a macbook that would be covered by the program (http://www.apple.com/support/macbook/hd/repairextension/).
Since I bought it Nov 2006, it is not covered by the 3 year extension, but (to me) it looks like it is covered by the sentence +"or until August 15, 2010, whichever provides longer coverage.+"
Apple Italy is currently refusing to apply the coverage, saying that only the 3 years coverage applies.
So why do Apple wrote "whichever provides longer coverage"?
To my laptop, longer coverage means August 15, 2010.
Isn't it?
Help needed! ... and really much appreciated!

Nobody from Apple here (at least officially). We're all users just like you. I guess if Apple in Italy doesn't want to replace your hard drive, that's the end of the story. As I mentioned, hard drives are cheap now. The real question is your data on the present hard drive. If the computer still boots, I would strongly suggest you try to backup your data ASAP.
I agree that this issue comes down to "whichever provides longer coverage". However, that aside, I have Apple Care on my MB and it only covers me for 3 years. Since I bought my MB in Nov '07, I'm covered until Nov '10. It doesn't make a lot of sense that you would be covered for a longer period than my Apple Care (which again is 3 years).

  • MacBook Pro 2011 Repair Extension Program for Video Issues -Feedback?

Anybody have any feedback from the MacBook Pro 2011 Repair Extension Program for Video Issues?
I had my early 2011 15 inch 8,2 repaired (free) under the extension program. The machine now appears to run well - but much hotter than before. The case is significantly hotter - especially at the GPU corner and the fans are constantly on moderate to high (not full). Anybody else experiencing similar changes?

    Run an Apple Hardware Test;

Note an error free AHT is not definitive.
    install iStat menus:

Set Activity Monitor to ALL PROCESSES and set CPU to display values from high to low.
When the MBP gets hot, post images of both for inspection.

  • Repair Extension program for second owner?

I have an eMac 1.25 that recently stopped powering up. It falls within the serial number range for the repair extension program, however, I am not the original owner. I bought it a couple of months ago from a guy off of Craigslist. I don't even have the original documentation. Any chance that if I take it in to my local Apple store that they'll help me, or am I pretty much screwed?
I was able to use a website to decipher the manufacture date, and it's only two and a half years ago.
Thanks for any help you can give me!

As roam has already noted, an Apple Store's opinion is what counts. For what it's worth, my understanding is that the repair extension applies to the Mac, not to original owner; if you own it, you can request the repair. If you go to apple.com and use the "visit an Apple store" pulldown list, you can bring up the website for whichever of the three Oregon Apple Stores is closest to you. You can call the store and confirm things before actually bringing the eMac in; once you've confirmed they'll accept it, you can use the website's same-day Genius Bar "Reserve" link to schedule a time for the dropoff.

  • Problems with set up disc after upgrading hard drive

I am having problems starting up my Macbook after upgrading the hard drive from 80GB to 160GB.  The new hd is SATA, a WDScorpio.  The pins on the end look the same, and I've had no problem with the physical install.  When I go to start up the Macbook, I get a gray screen and the "flashing manila file w/a question mark" icon.  I load the disc while holding down the "C" key, and all that happens is the disc gets ejected.  What am I doing wrong?  I also have my hd backed up w/time machine in an external hd.  Any ideas?

Turns out, my problem is a malfunctioning optical drive. My Macbook couldn't read the set up disc. This is the second time in a week that I have had this Macbook into the apple store for warranty repair work. Last week, It was a defective VGcable. Each trip to the Applestore is 115 miles round trip from where I live. I tried to get Apple to give me a new computer, but no dice. I even had a district manager in Boise Idaho hang up on me. It's too bad when they know they have a product which everyone loves, and wants to use. They can set the terms. How many things must go wrong before they just replace the @#$# thing? I bought the Macbook Feb 12th, so it's not that old. I have handled it with the utmost care. Anyway, I've tasted the forbidden fruit, and will continue to use Apple products. Thanks for your help. I'll probably have a much easier time with a computer that works. (knock on wood)

  • Recent problems with a pair of external Seagate hard drives

I've recently started having some trouble with a pair of external hard drives.  They're used exclusively for back up and I'm fairly certain all of their contents are available elsewhere, so I'm not terribly concerned about the data they contain.  I would, however, appreciate some insight into what has happened, how it happened and/or what I might do to fix it.
The two hard drives were both formatted with a single ext4 partition.  Within the last couple weeks, Arch Linux started to incorrectly detect them both as HPFS/NTFS/exFAT.  Mounting them as I had been (with just -o rw), ownership/permissions do act as if the partition is ntfs.  Using chown to change ownership would affect all directories but did not affect any files.  If I use -o uid=myusername,umask=177,dmask=077 (which I'm pretty sure is all that's been necessary in the past to read and write ntfs partitions), I can then access files as well, but I still can not write anything new to disk.
After a bit of searching, I found a pair similar threads suggesting that fdisk/cfisk should be used to change the partition type back to 83.  I used cfdisk to do so and both cfdisk and fdisk -l now show partition type as linux.  Mounting with just -o rw and using chown does now change ownership of files as well, but it still does not allow me to write to the disk and ownership/permissions are not kept after unmounting/remounting.  I'm not really sure where to go from here.
As to the potential source of the problem, the main point that comes to mind is that I booted into Windows 7 for the first time in at least a few months around that time.  I don't generally leave these external hard drives connected except for when backing up, but it's possible that they were connected while booting Windows at one point.  If they were connected, I definitely did not do anything that should have affected them, but I'm wondering if it's possible that Windows automatically did.

I highly doubt Windows itself would have done anything without your consent. For programs running in Windows, there's no telling, but if you don't have the security stuff turned off you should still have been prompted. Also, the fs type really shouldn't have any effect in Linux unless you're using a poorly written helper.
Anyway, give us something concrete to work with, s/a output of fdisk -l, lsblk -f, dumpe2fs -h, the relevant output of mount when the partitions are mounted, the permissions of the mountpoint when mounted, an example of the contents of the fs, etc.
Other thoughts: Have the partitions been fsck'd lately? Have you looked at your journal from around the time things started going sideways?

  • Problems with copying iPhoto library onto new hard drive from external HELP

I had to get a new hard drive installed onto my MacBook Pro, but was able to copy my iPhoto library onto my external hard drive via another computer before the old hard drive failed. Now, I am trying to copy that library back onto my MacBook.
After I copied the library onto the MacBook, when iPhoto was opened, it showed no photos but I could see album titles. Then when I opened iPhoto while holding down the option key, it was all clumped into one event and not nearly all of the photos were there. Also, I have right-clicked on the library to see package contents and everything seems to be there, but I don't know how to make it all show up in the library.
I've downloaded iPhoto Library Manager because I thought that might help (but haven't used it yet -- don't know how) and I just need some help to recover my iPhoto library... and is there a way to restore all the separate events imported and time/date stamps, in order to get all the photos in chronological order?

Should I just go through the iPhoto Library package contents and drag every folder into iPhoto?
No. That will get you massive duplication.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
    Regards
    TD

  • Problems with external/usb after installing new hard drive

After having a new hard drive installed (from Mac 10.5.2 to 10.6.8) I have experienced 2 problems so far:
    1. I am getting no response (from anything connected from my usb port) ie. mouse.  But plugging in the mouse directly into the mac works fine.
    2. After a few minutes, the sound from my production speakers (connected: macbook->usb cord->sound card-> production speakers) starts to skip and then no sound at all, however my soundcard is still working as I see the light is on.
Can anyone let me know how this can be fixed?  I never had these problems before getting the new hard drive.

    try doing a PRAM/NVRAM reset.......
that might sort out your issues.......
good luck.....hope it works for you...

  • Problems with moving iTunes to an external hard drive

My laptop is on it's last leg, and I am backing everything up onto an external hard drive. When I sync my itunes to my phone, I want it to sync from my external drive instead of my pc. I followed the instructions given here.... http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1364  Including move the original iTunes folder into the recycle bin and changing the location to my external drive. When I open iTunes, there is nothing in my library...no music, apps, playlists, nothing. I go to the advanced tab and check the location and, the location STILL shows that it is in my C drive, which is my laptop, and not the H drive that I changed  it to. I have tried unsuccessfully many time to change it to the H drive. Also, it doesn't matter how many times I throw the itunes folder into the recycle bin, it keeps reapearing in my documents/music folder, but instead of the 15 gb, it only shows 56 kb.
I appreciate any help I can get on this!!!

What you needed to do was copy the entire iTunes folder from the C: drive to the external, then hold down shift as you start iTunes and keep holding until asked to choose or create a library. At that point you browse to the libray on the external open it, and it just works.
At this point it sounds like your media is one the external drive but you may have thrown away the files that tell iTunes what is in your library, playlists, ratings, etc. If iTunes is looking for a library in the "standard" location, and it isn't there, it will create a new blank one for your. If the last library it connected to is anywhere else it stops with an error.
The 64k question is, can you still find a copy of the original iTunes Library.itl file that used to be on your C:\ drive. If you've not emptied the trash the largest recent file will be the one you want. If those have gone files from the Previous iTunes Libraries folder may possibly be useful for recovering your playlists and other info...

  • Problem with Time Capsule and an External Hard Drive.

I want to Back Up a new WD External Hard drive with Time Machine to My Time Capsule. It is formatted to FAT32, as I read here that it should be. It is excluded in the Time Machine Settings Settings and I try to delete it with the Minus Sign, but for some reason it won´t let me. I tried to add and delete a few folders from my Mac Book, and it works every time. It just won`t work with my External Hard Drive and it is not being backed up. What should I do?

    Adrain
I agree with Kenichi, MS-DOS FAT-32 is great for sharing files between windows and Mac, but even it has a single file size limit of 4GB.
    See > http://www.macworld.com/article/51972/2006/07/ww_drives.html
For the External HD to work as a Time Machine backup the drive needs to be Partitioned and Formatted as he suggests, GUID Partition Table/Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)

  • Having Problems with Kernel Panics and an External Hard Drive

I've been having Kernel Panics for a month now and have yet to resolve the issue. I know about Dr. Smokes guide to resolving them, but I'm working on a time-sensitive editing project in Final Cut Pro and therefore have not had time to fix my computer.
I am using an OWC external hard drive for the project, and today when I had a kernel panic and I rebooted my computer as I normally do. But, this time, my external hard drive icon was not on my desktop, and a message popped up that said, "The disc you inserted was not readable by this computer." Is there anyway to remedy this so that my computer reads my hard drive?

Have you tried using Disk Utility to repair your ext. hard drive as shown in Dr.Smokes Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption?
    Cheers!

  • Problems with back up after replacement of hard drive

    Hi,
Recently I had my Seagate hard drive change due to a world wide recall by Apple. Prior to changing, I backup everything on my Mac using Time Machine with Time capsule. The technician bootup my system using a boot disk I think, after that I transferred all backup data from my time capsule to the Mac. Everything seems alright with the "restore" until I want to back up my latest data....I could not back up as my previous latest copy and just backup teh changes. The TCapsule showed my data which is 259GB but I cannot use back this data.
Do I have to delete this copy of backup in TC and restart the process from strt again? 259GB might take up to 24hours.
    Please advise.
    Andy

You need to erase the Time Capsule drive and start again. Whenever you change a hard drive, motherboard, etc., then Time Machine considers that a new computer and wants to create a new backup.
Use Airport Utility to erase the Time Capsule drive. Do not try removing the data manually.

  • MacBook Pro 10.6.8 Hard Drive Issues

I ordered a new hard drive (The exact same) for my macbook pro and here is what happend. When I boot from the CD and I get to the Utility panel I don't see my hard drive, it is not listed under Disk Utility nor under the selec area. I have rester the NVRAM/PRAM at no avail. I finally used the Hard Drive as a USB and then I found it. I formated it and install the Mac OS X on it without any problems. When I unplugged it and put it back in the computer, it won't recognize it. I get a lock  symbole in the gray area but nothing happens. I've had similar problem in the past when I used a similar Hard Drive and I can't remember how i finxed it.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot
    ~John

If the HDD will boot your MBP externally but not when installed in the MBP, that usually indicates a bad connection.. Either the connecting plug is not seated properly, ot the connecting cable is loose or faulty.  Open the MBP and check very carefully for those conditions. To repair or replace connecting cable is not an expensive repair, even at an Apple store.
    Ciao.

  • MacBook Pro 17" Solid State Hard drive issues

I have just brought a MacBookPro 17in as an upgrade for my 13in
    Model Name:    MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier:    MacBookPro8,3
      Processor Name:    Intel Core i7
      Processor Speed:    2.3 GHz
      Number Of Processors:    1
      Total Number Of Cores:    4
L2 Cache (per core):    256 KB
      L3 Cache:    8 MB
      Memory:    16 GB

      Sudden Motion Sensor:
      State:    Enabled
The problem I have is the solid state drive that works in my 13in does not work in the 17in
It works fine in an external case and in 13in but not 17in
I have tried reformatting it and installing a new system. Nothing works... after a few minutes all I get is the wheel of death and the laptop crashes.
I am assuming the laptop is faulty as I can't fault the solid state drive which is a OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD

My understanding is that the new macbook pro shipped with lion. And the only OS that will work on it is lion. The earlier ones that had the option of snow leopard could be set to run the older OS even if lion was installed. BUt not now. You still have the other hard drive with lion on it I hope. You might be able to make a clone of the lion hard drive and get it to install on the solid state drive. Someone on the discussions site should be able to tell you how.
