Problem with mail have to force quit
Hi, I am having to FORCE QUIT from Mail, everytime when quitting out of it. It does not allow to even shutdown my iMac. Also every time I start up the Trash has some recovered files. Help!
Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
Any change?
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.

I have a macbook pro 1.5 years old ver10.7.5 and now having a problem with having to manually force quit after a hour or so of use to clear up memory(unit slows down) should I up grade iso if so to what and what is the correct procedure? Rick
To determine if it is, boot into Safe Mode and see what happens. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455

just trying to figure out what to do, I have one account that sends and receives perfectly, the second account will send, but the wheel keeps spinning on the receive end of things. and I have to force quit everytime I open mail.
Hi kd&press, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
Reboot.

Have problems with Mail on MacBook running OS X Mavericks. It suddenly became stuck: won't quit and won't display any messages. Please help.
Select Force Quit from under the Apple menu and select Mail (it may say that it isn't responding).

I want to disable my mac.com mail, I know how to delete it but I cannot get into mail to do this, whenever I click on mail, or mail in system preferences to open it I get the spinning wheel and have to force quit. I am running a Macbook 10.7.5
Thanks,
Edward. You can't merge Apple IDs. You also can't cancel (delete) and existing ID, you can only choose to stop using it.
If your old ID was compromised and you can no longer access it, you'll have to contact Apple for assistance. Go to https://expresslane.apple.com ; click 'See all products and services' at the bottom of the page. In the next page click 'More Products and Services, then 'Apple ID'. In the next page select 'Other Apple ID Topics' then then 'Apple ID account Security’. -
I have to force quit mail every time I want to shut down my macbook
I know there are several other posts asking the same question but I've been through all of them and I can't find which is the application that is blocking my mail from closing. Here is the diagnostics test I ran.

I have to force quit Mail almost every time I shut down my computer?
Every time my mac boots up I have recovered files.
… I suspect that at the time of the problems, there was a file system inconsistency. … -
MAX OS X - version 10.7.5 :
For some weeks now, I have to force-quit 9 times out of 10 to get out of my e-mail account (g-mail). This only happens on my i-Mac, never with my other devices (Macbook Pro, i.Phone, i-Pad).
Does anybody know what could be the reason for this ?
ThanksOK, you have iMovie 08, which is also known is iMovie Version 7.1.4. It has been a few years since i used this version, so this is based on memory.
The only components you must have in the Library/QuickTime folder are the AppleIntermediateCodec.component and the AppleMPEG2Codec.component.
All the others could potentially be causing problems. I would drag the DivX components, the Flip4Mac components, and the Google Camera components to the Desktop temporarily, so nothing is left in this folder except the two Apple components.
Then restart your Mac and start iMovie. If it works, yay!
If you still need these other components for some other app, you can probably get updated DivX components for free at Perian.org.
You can get updated Flip4Mac components by running WMV Player and updating. It should prompt you to update automatically.
I am not sure about the Google components, but if you are running something that needs them, it should prompt you to install the current versions.
If none of that works, post back. -
Can't get Mail to work - I get the spinning wheel and Mail freezes. I have to Force Quit Mail . How do I fix this problem?
Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
Back up all data.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Post your results.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return. -
Have to force-quit Mail - Update did not fix
The update seemed to fix all of the issues I had with SL, except for the spinning wheels in Mail, and that Mail will not quit without a force-quit. It will even cancel a restart. Am I the only one left with this issue?
Problem
Here is what is happening. Btw I am using a Dutch version so my apologies if I translate menu-options wrong.
Mail is opened at startup. When I want to quit (CMD-Q) mail, nothing happens and the program gets in a sort of wait state. The system doesn't say that mail is not responding anymore. When I open the Mail-menu several options are greyed-out, including the CMD-Q as if the program is waiting for something. After waiting 15 minutes still the same and the only way to end mail is by using the force quit option.
If Mail is opened and I use the red X to close the window it isn't possible to open it anymore. Stopping the normal way isn't possible either and I am in the same situation as above and need to force-quit Mail.
If I leave Mail open and want to shutdown the computer I have to force quit Mail, because otherwise I cannot shutdown anymore.
*Solutions I've tried*
Using the Rebuild menu-option doesn't help.
I have downloaded the complete 10.6.2 dmg-file and re-installed it. This seemed to fix the problem, at least for a little while. But unfortunately after a day the same problem came back
How can this be possible?
Is there anyone out there who has the same problem and knows how to fix this? Would it help to re-install the mailprogram? How do I do this?
This is happening on the new computer of my father. I have convinced him to make the switch from Windows, but this situation is making me feel a bit embarrassed -
I keep getting "Mail Not Responding" and have to force quit
I can't even get to "Mail Doctor" because the spinning beachball starts up instantly. I have to force quit to get it to stop. Mail is working on all my other eight devices but not my primary iMac. What the heck?
What OS version are you running? If 10.8/9 try the below.
Do a backup.
Quit Mail.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Library/Containers/com.apple.mail. Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.
Re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.

Mail never quits completely, I have to force quit
Mac Mail never quits completely. I always have to force quit. What's up? I have it running, I hit CMD+Q and it closes, but you can see it running in the dock. I usually forget that it's running until the fan on my MBA starts running. Then I know MAIL is running. Why can't Mail quit when I tell it to? I'm running the latest version of Lion as of 5-7-2012.
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
Have to Force quit Mail & cannot delete certain messages
I know some folks have already posted about this, but I've yet to find a solution. My mail continues to download the same, previously deleted messages each time I open it. I also have to force quit mail to leave it. It will download new mail from my .mac account while in this condition but will not access my other sympatico mail account. In order to get new mail I have to force quit and reopen the app. I've considered the 'rebuild mailbox' option but all of these annoying messages are in my inbox and there appears to be no 'rebuild' function for the inbox. I've also tried going into my library and manually moving these files to the trash and restarting mail. They appear again. Can someone please offer me a solution to this problem. All I can think of doing now is getting rid of Leopard to go back to Tiger mail.
ThanksHold the phone. This, apparently, may be a Bell Sympatico server issue after all. I've tried to get in contact with their support people and the message says that they've been having problems. Also, my wife, who only uses .mac mail recieved the same email (that keeps popping up in my inbox) and has had no issues. I retrieved my mail using my newer imac as well and the same problem occured there. Hence, it is probably not an app issue, but a server issue.
Thanks all for your help. Hopefully I can resolve this with Sympatico. -
Keep getting deleted emails back and mail will not close, have to force quit
i have 4 emails that will not stay deleted.I will delete them and as soon as i reopen my mail they come back. Its as if they never left. Then i can't close my mail.i have to force quit. I have read of other problems close to mine and tried there solutions with no success.I do not know if my setting in pref. are correct or not. This problem is not allowing me to recieve new emails i just keep getttting these same 4 back time after time. very frustrating.
You're welcome.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
In order to fix the problem, we'll have to re-create Envelope Index. The thing is, Mail may choke on those messages while re-creating the index, so either be prepared for that or perform optional steps 1 and 3:
1. (Optional, but recommended). Assuming this is a POP account, in the Finder go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/Messages/, and identify the *.emlx files associated with the troublesome messages. Viewing the *.emlx files as List in the Finder showing the creation/modification date may help. Just identify them; do not get rid of them yet (you must quit Mail first).
2. Quit Mail.
3. (Optional, but recommended). Move to the Trash the troublesome *.emlx files found in step 1.
4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong -- e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down.
5. Locate Envelope Index and move it to the Trash. If you see an Envelope Index-journal file there, delete it as well.
6. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/. Locate Deleted Messages.mbox, and move it to the Trash. I assume there is nothing to be preserved there.
7. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be "imported". Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index -- Mail says it's "importing", but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user's home folder. -
Always have to force quit mail app
A few weeks ago, I starting having problems with my mail app on my imac. I have 2 mail accounts set up in the app, one is my mobile me and the other is through AOL. Before I updated my computer to snow leopard, this app worked fine. It seem to work fine for a few weeks after I did the update, but now once I open the mail app, in order to get new mail to show up in the inbox, I have to force quit out of the app and open it back up. I cannot just go to 'mail' and 'quit mail' the app freezes. I have tried clicking the 'get mail' button and nothing happens when clicking on it. I have also searched the support forums and have tried to delete the 'com.apple.mail.plist' file and nothing changes.
I am frustrated because I have this exact same set up on my macbook pro and things seem to work just fine. I have checked all the settings and they all match.
Any ideas? I am sick of force quitting and reopening mail when I want to see if I have new emails....
Anyway to just get rid of the mail app and reinstall this application. I dont want to have to re-install the entire snow leopard program and have to go through all the tedious work of putting all my stuff back on the computer.... (the first time I did the upgrade, for some reason my computer crashed, and I lost everything, had to call apple support and they had to talk me through the reinstall-- luckily I had everything backed up on disks)Finder won't show you invisible Files (filenames beginning with a period). That's what makes fixing Mail such a hassle.
In Applications/Utilities you'll find a program called Terminal.app. It lets you access the command-line interface where you're free to do absolutely anything. Be careful there.
Open a Terminal window and paste this in:
find ~/Library/Mail -name .\*
A list of invisible files files will be displayed. If it's just caches and index states, as I mentioned in the earlier posting, run the command again with the delete flag:
find ~/Library/Mail -name .\* -delete
Don't run this if the first listing looks like it's showing e-mails. I also recommend checking that you have a backup first. -
Why do I have to force quit mail?
Mail almost all the time never closes by closing it, I have to force quit it.
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.
