Problem with momentus XT ST750LX003 hybrid hard drive in my macbook aluminium 2009

I have change the hard drive in my macbook aluminium 2009, the new drive is Seagate (Momentus XT ST750LX003) hybrid drive.
Each time osx turn off the drive all the applications are killed except osx. I have tested 2 different drives and i have the same problem with both.  Seagate do not have anything about this problem.
I even turn off the power saving of the computer and the hard drive... but after an hour of inactivity all the apps are killed ( except osx).
Anyone can help?

Mid June 2012 bought a Momentus XT 750 for the just released 15" MBP. It was manufactured in Oct 2011 according to the box and firmware was SM12. I liked the speed and most of the time it would seem to work fine, however there was a problem with corruption of large files - few hundreds of MB and larger. Archives wouldn't unpack properly, md5 hash would report different results, VMware virtual machines (using huge files as virtual drives) would fail randomly.
It took me a while to narrow it down to the HDD, as this Mac also had freezing issues with graphics drivers (these now seem to be fine with OS 10.8, also upcoming 10.7.5 should help, although pre-11G30 builds were junk). On top of this I installed 16 GB RAM which is not supported by Apple so I wasn't sure what's causing trouble...
I returned the XT 750 (Best Buy) after reading numerous similar reports on the net and finding that there is no firmware update for this model yet (500 GB version had similar issues which were eventually addressed in firmware). I noticed that they had a new batch of these drives made in April 2012 and the PN was different: 9JB1A1-575 instead of the older drive's -574. However when I unpacked it the label still said SM12 for firmware, so I won't bother installing it and I'll go with a regular 7200 rpm 750 GB drive (got a Hitachi drive) and delay the upgrade for a real SSD when the prices go down.

Unless Apple specifically makes a note of it on their Leopard preview site, no one can say. People with the developer betas are under a non-disclosure agreement. So, all we know is what Apple makes public. Right now there's no specific mention of support for those kinds of drives.

  • Problems with time machine and external hard drive

    Hi all
In 2009 with my imac I bought a WD external hard drive which the computer says is 148GB formatted. I recall that the hard drive contained folders with files for the running of the hard drive when I bought it - and after it had been plugged in to a mac and used as a time machine, it no longer worked on windows computers.
Now I have used 195 GB on my computer's internal hard drive and wish to stop using the external hard drive as a time machine and instead use it for swapping files between computers and the like.
How can I wipe the time machine back ups and start using it as per usual again? do i need to obtain the WD files from somewhere?
    thanks in advance
    Nick

    Hi Nick,
Avoid the WD files completely, not needed & often a problem.
You need to erase the Drive, & to use it on both Format it MS-DOS/FAT32, on the Mac or PC, but will have a 4 GB filesize limit, as well as other limitations.
One option not mentioned yet is MacDrive for your PCs... allows them to Read/Write  & Format HFS+, so no need to reformat it...

  • Problem with Western Digital Combo Ext Hard Drive

I recently bought a WD 160GB Ext. HD to use as a backup. Unfortunately I found that when using the Firewire port data transfer would just stall after a while making it difficult to upgrade from Panther to Tiger which can only be done over the Firewire port. Qusstion:
    1. Has anyone else has experienced this problem with WD hard drives
    2. What HD would you recommend so I don't have this problem
My goal is to upgrade to Tiger on 1 partition of my ext. HD and have a backup of Panther on the other partition. WD said they would replace the drive so I may try that in the hope that maybe I just got a bad one and it's not a design defect.

    Hi everybody,
as i wrote a few weeks ago in another similar topic, i have exactly the same problem with a WD MyBook home 1 To. Plugged on USB port, everything's fine. On the Fw400 port, the device is "unknown"and won't mount... So i bought a new cable with FW400/FW800 and plugged it on my Imac's FW800 port and there, the disk mount on the desktop and it works perfectly! I read lots of posts in differents forum which describe the problem with the Imac's FW400 port.
So, i think you have to buy a fw400/fw800 cable and plug it on your Imac's fw800 port !

  • Problem with backing up to external hard drive and then " recovering " files, apps etc.

    Hi there,
I hope you can help me please, I have messed some things up from not knowing what I was doing : ( and would like to fix them if possible.
I will try to be brief and concise. Here goes....
    1. My 2006 iMac 4 running Leopard OSX was starting to run very slowly. My hard drive had 232 GB of which 220 GB were being used. The thing using most space was iPhoto, over 60 GB of photos.
    2. I downloaded Mackeeper and ran their cleaning program, getting rid of duplicate files, clearing caches etc. but it didn't release much extra space, just a couple of gigs.
    3. I read an article from Maclife " 25 ways to speed up your Mac ". One of the tips was to reinstall the operating system which I did, using the " archive and install " instruction.
    4. I now have Leopard OS under a new account name which is running faster but I cannot access various apps such as iPhoto, Photoshop CS4, Keynote, Pages etc.
    5. Everything prior to me messing around is now in a folder called " previous system ".
    6. I realize now that I should have first bought a new external hard drive, which I now have done ; an Iomega 500 GB with USB 2.0 and that I should have backed up everything first before messing around. Hindsight is a great thing.
    7. Having connected the ext. hard drive, I was looking for info on what I should do next when Time Machine kicked in and automatically started copying everything, without me having to do anything such as formatting etc.
    8. Everything that was on the hard drive ( 220 GBs ) has been copied to the ext. HD so I hope I haven't lost anything, especially my photos on iPhoto and CS4.
    9. Other 3rd party apps haven't been effected but now I would like to integrate everything back into one seamless, quick flowing system.
    10. How can I do this ?
Any advice or help would be appreciated.
    Thanks, Sean.

UPDATE : I have re-installed from disk, various apps that were no longer functioning such as iLife, iWork etc. So, I now can access my photos again.
Also, I had to re-install all the software for my printer ( Stylus Pro 4880 ) and reset it so the printer is working again.
Photoshop CS4 won't open. I think I will have to get in touch with Adobe as basically, I guess they have a built-in "blocker" which prevents me from opening the app as the license is for only 1 user and having re-installed the OS, there are now, in effect, 2 users ( Me and Me 1, I think ).
So, having added on a new external HD, Time Machine has made a copy of most of the files, folders, apps etc onto the external HD. The internal HD is still nearly full ( 220 GBs out of 232 GBs ).
I am guessing the way to go now in order to free up space on the internal HD is to delete/trash older photos from my iPhoto library and hope that if needed, I will be able to access them on the external HD.
Am I correct ? Please advise before I do something I will regret.
    Thanks, Sean.

  • Problems with itunes 10 and external hard drive

    Hi
I was recently forced to change the internal hard drive on my G5 Tower, and the external hard drive where I keep my music library.
The new external drive had all my music files copied to it. I reloaded my itunes library files (that I had backed up from old computer) into my music folder and I named the new external drive as the media folder in Itunes preferences. The first time I used itunes it asked me if I wanted it to locate all files to which I pressed OK. itunes quickly found the majority of files and I cleaned up / organized the small mess left behind.
Trouble is a few problems have occurred. Firstly, itunes seems slow – there’s a sluggish pause flicking between tracks – where as before it used to snap into response. Occasionally I’m asked to locate files which I thought was a task it had already done - and every now and again when I check the external hard drive music library I find files have been moved from there album locations to ‘untitled’ folders, etc. I can only assume itunes is doing this. I’ve also noticed I can’t remove the external hard drive from the desktop without closing itunes first which never happened before.
This is getting somewhat frustrating. Can anybody advise?
    Much appreciated.
    K

  • Problem with gigabit after upgrade to hard drive

I just upgraded my hard drive to a 7200.2 and re-installed 10.4. Set up my network with a static IP and manually set my Ethernet card to 1000 and full duplex but am only seeing about 1.3MB/s transfer rates from my NAS. Before the upgrade I was seeing 30MB/s. Is there something I might have missed.
    My network:
Mini 1.6GHz, Infrant ReadyNAS, both running gigabit jumbo frames at 7936 frames. Netgear gigabit switch, cat6 or cat5e cabling.
Again prior to the hard drive upgrade I was seeing 30MB/s
    now I am seeing 1.3MB/s

I don't see a new topic link anywhere so please forgive me.
I just got my mac today and ive searched through the forums and typed in advanced searches and I cannot seem to find a answer. I cant even register my mini because something is wrong with the serial number I been on the internet and usually when i'd get done for the day on the internet I would do a disk clean up and defrag my pc. My question is there any way I can do a disk clean up and defrag on a mac? Please help
Oh and I have another question. I read about some kinda feature that allows me to use my mac mini to share a internet connection with a another computer. But im not too sure if they were just talking about a network or whatever. But could I do so if I wanted to connect a ps3 to my mini with a ethernet cord and use the mini's wifi feature to share the internet?

  • Problem with time machine after replacing hard drive

A couple of days ago i went to the apple store and got the hard drive replaced on my macbook pro. When i got home i realized i couldnt back up from my time capsule. When i open time machine the only backups i can find are from "today" and i cant find anything else. I have not deleted anything and have not got any warnings about any backups being deleted.
I then went in to the time capsule from the sidebar in finder -> data, in which i found two sparsebundles. When clicking on the one i needed, i got this message:"no mountable filesystems". And from here on i dont know what to do.
I have been reading all over the forum, but can not find the answer. Also have in mind i am NOT a mac geek and know very little about this. I just want my important files back on my mac in a way i can understand.
    Any help appreciated!

  • Problem with WD 1 TB external hard drive

i recently bought a 1 TB My Book for my 2007 Mac that runs Tiger. when i connected it i went through the software installation. i then had to restart my computer. when i restarted it, all of my applications & internet browsers were wiped clean and set to factory settings. i was able to retrieve my files in the folders, but 2 things. 1: I lost about 75 gigs of space on my computer, and i've searched all folders to try and find if something was duplicated. 2: when i readded my photos to iPhoto and my music to iTunes, it doubled/tripled/quadrupled some of the files. i thought by deleting those duplicates, that space would free up, but that was not the case. Any ideas?

when i connected it i went through the software installation.
I'm not sure what software would be needed to use an external drive. A standard external drive just works with the built-in Mac OS X software.
Not sure exactly what caused the problem, but it is sounds like
when i restarted it, all of my applications & internet browsers were wiped clean and set to factory settings.
you may be in a new user account. If you log out, on the Login Screen, do you see more than the accounts you had previously, or more than one if you previously had just one?
i was able to retrieve my files in the folders
Where were your files located? Depending on the situation, dragging the dropping files using Finder may do a copy instead of a move. Also, if you drag media files to the iTunes window, iTunes may make a copy to put into the +iTunes Media+ folder while keeping the original files too; depends on how iTunes is set up in its preferences.

  • Problems with Dashboard (after partitioning the hard drive?)

I have a MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard. Yesterday I partitioned the drive to also run Windows, using Boot Camp. Everything worked fine after I completed Boot Camp.
Now my Dashboard is not working correctly. It opens and closes, and certain widgets work, but others are non-responsive. Some won't even let me close them. I opened the "Manage Widgets" widget, and that is blank and also will not close.
I also installed all new software updates yesterday, but those are the only changes that I have made.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

First, in general, you should only be using the hardware drivers from your model's Toshiba support page. As well, you should not allow Windows Update to change any of your Toshiba supplied hardware drivers.
After doing a clean install, the order that the drivers are installed in is critical for success. This is 1st chipset, 2nd display, then all other drivers. But, on a Toshiba, after installing all the hardware drivers, you are going to have to install some of the Toshiba utilities for it to work properly. Again, the order is critical, this would be 1st TVAP (Toshiba Value Added Package), 2nd Toshiba Flash Card Support Utility, then all other Toshiba Utilities.
However, like everything, there can be other factors and complications. For example, on your system you could have either an nVidia or Realtek sound card. In this case, you can try each driver and see which installs and works.
But, I would strongly recommend that you breakdown and order the set of Toshiba recovery media for your system, which you can do here. You will just need to input the serial number from the Toshiba label on the bottom of your unit. This will rebuild your Toshiba HDD recovery partition, reinstall Windows 7 with an imbedded product key, and install all the drivers, utilities and software your system came with, as listed in your specifications.
Let us know what happens. Good luck.

  • Purchasing A New Hard Drive For Old Macbook

    Hey everyone!
I'm new here. I found an old Macbook of mine—a black Macbook about 12 3/4" across. I got it a while ago, and the hard drive stopped working so I just bought a new computer. But now I would like to have two computers, and I would like to use this old Macbook again. I realize that this old Macbook still works; it just needs a new hard drive. So I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction of a nice hard drive that I can slide into this black Macbook of mine. I looked online, and I'm afraid to purchase one without the help of someone; I don't know if the size of the drive will fit into this old Macbook or what. So if anyone can help me out, that would be so great! Thanks guys!

  • Using Hybrid Hard Drives with Macbook Pro ???

    Hello,
I am looking for any news or answers, if it is possible to use one of the very new Hybrid Hard Drives from Seagate ("Momentum 5400 PSD") or Samsung ("Spinpoint MH") with Macbook/Macbook Pro ???
What i have read so far, seems only ugly Windows Vista mentioned everywhere, but no word about Macbook and/or Mac OS X :-(((
    Thanks in advance,
    Paul

I read on the Seagate site that the drive would work but that you wouldn't get all of the hybrid functionality you're paying for. (lost the link.... sorry).
The one I've read about is the Momentus 7200.2 Laptop Hard Drive. Here is a tech article about that:
    http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,2119528,00.asp
I think I'm going to go for this one, though I am a little concerned that it won't be as quite as the Apple installed drive.
