Problem with my IPhoto...

Just a few minutes ago, my IPhoto started acting funny. Whenever I run my cursor across a picture it disappears, leaving a gray-dashed box around where the picture once was. If I click on this box my picture is still there...i restarted my macbook and it has continued to do this. What is going on!?

Try rebuilding your thumbnails. Quit iPhoto. Hold down Option and Command as you launch iPhoto. You'll get a dialog box asking if you wish to rebuild. Select the first option, the small thumbnails. See if your library behaves properly after the rebuild is complete. If not, Quit again, Option-Command-launch again, and check the first 2 boxes. (You can skip the first rebuild and do this from the start, but it takes longer to complete.)
Regards.

If you want help you’ll need to give us more information. There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 8 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • "short-term memory loss": problems with iTunes, iPhoto, and others

Recurring problems been frustrated with for several weeks, likely related in some way:
    1. iTunes (10) keeps asking for me to agree to license agreement every time it boots up.
    2. iPhoto (8.1.2) and Keynote (5.0.5) and iMovie (8.0.5) repeatedly give Start-up launch screen even though I click not to see it. iPhoto repeatedly asking me if I want to GPS my pictures.
    3. Google Earth stopped working.
    4. Skype also keeps asking me to agree to license agreement upon every launch.
    4. Skype upgrade (going from 2.8 to 5) runs and goes through all the way to relaunch but old version still there and no v. 5 to be seen.
    5. Adobe Acrobat repeatedly asking for log-in agreement too.
    HELP!
I have already reset PRAM and SMC.

Sorry for the length, got carried away trying to touch on main points.
Okay, 2006 model, which came out Aug 2006-7.
Heat. Good idea to run SmcFanControl 2.x to run default rpm 800-900 instead of too slow 500-600. Heat really harms those extra hot FBDIMM RAM chips.
You need to boot from another hard drive to repair your boot drive.
I would not go with DU and trust its verify. Alsoft Disk Warrior.
You probably have a dying OEM Nvidia 7300GT or ATI X1900 that clogs itself with dust (poor air chamber design) and has to be pulled and cleaned 3-4x a year. There is even a recall-exchange program for some of the ATI X1900s, based on card serial number.
Upgrades almost never do fix problems with hardware except once in awhile where graphic card drivers can always use some help.
At the least, to repair your drive, boot from SL DVD and "Utility Menu => Disk Utility" until you have OS X installed on a small 30GB "emergency Mac" volume (from which to run DU but also Disk Warrior).
I am not a fan of upgrading the OS to a new version. Format a new drive, and even actually new drives can ship with bad sectors. Think they don't? it would cost much more and longer to test even 1TB drive. And format a drive with Disk Utility from the new OS with Disk Utility, not older version.
I would do a +clean install+ of 10.6 to another hard drive and fully update that and test things out. Then, clone/backup that with SuperDuper (safety net) and install software (10.6 upgrade editions that are compatible only).
You may have something left in your system or installed that is corrupt, not compatible. Even a bad USB cable or device.
Then import (Migrate) or hand copy your home account from backup (data is usually fine, thinking of /account/Library/ items.
Creating a new user account can also be helpful to test a system, but first do a clean install so you know you are only using Apple OS.

  • Problems with Aperture/iphoto

    hello folks
I did downloaded the OS X Mauntain Lion recently on my mac and also the Aperture programan. both programs were working fine until, I started to do some upgrade present on my app box, all of then installed without problem but it was an error on Iphoto upgrade, i click many times to see if the upgrade work but nothing so i decided to deleted.
after this, i started to have problem with my aperture, every time i do try to open  i did receive the following message:
    Caution:
"make sure if you have Iphoto 9.3 or later, if not you need to upgrade it"
                                                                                                                   (ok)
I did tryed to upgrade from app box but was empty, so i tryed to download this iphoto 9.3 so the computer said there is a new version installed. but
Aperture still not opening so, i did open Iphoto as a message recommended to upgrade library, what I did was to select the aperture library to be showed in Iphoto and it works, but after using few times i found another problem
trying to open Aperture the following message appear:
    Warning
There was an error opening the database for the library “~/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary”.
                                                                                                                                    (Quit)
also when I try to open iphoto this message appear:
    Caution:
The current screen resolution is not optimal for iPhoto.
                                                                                                                                    (OK)
if  I do click another message appear:
"Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable
Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library.
To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed.
You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup."
                                                                                                                                   (Quit)
and then close, so none of the program open and i dont know what to do.
anyone knows anything about it, i would apreciate your help

Smart albums should be visible in both applications, see: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5260
Do your albums contain images, that have been rejected in Aperture, or hidden in iPhoto?
Or have you additional  smart filters set by searches? These will not be visible in iPhoto.
If you have neither rejected not hidden photos in the smart albums, I'd recommend to rebuild your library (after backing it up). See: Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library: Aperture 3 User Manual

  • Problems with upgrading iPhoto?

I´m havint problems to upgrade Iphoto (and garageband). I can see there is an update available, but the meassage I get when I try to upgrade it is:  "To update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it.".
I see that others has popped the same question, but I haven´t find any solution. Can anyone help me out?

iPhoto (and, apparently, GarageBand) are licenced to another user name.
Were these installed when you set up the machine? If so, use the account that you registered the machine under.
If you bought them since, then use the account you bought them from.

  • Problems with DVD, IPhoto,etc.

I cant play DVDs and I cannot install software for my digital camera which is on a CD. Is this a problem with the CD drive? I have only had this IMAC for a few months. These things shouldnt be happening. And is there more qualified people that I can talk to. I appreciate the help anyone can offer but if I am going to pay $1700 for this computer then it needs to work for more than a summer! Help!

    Hey croth75.
It very well could be a hardware problem but let's try a little maintenance first.
Open Disk Utility and do a Repair Permissions.
This has worked for me before it similar situations but it is not a cure all.
After you Repair Permissions you might try a restart.
If you are still having problems, try inserting the install disk and restart while holding down the 'C' key. I know this may not be possible for you as you are having disk related problems, but maybe.
After you start up from the install disk, locate Disk Utility from one of the top menu tabs and do a Repair Disk.
After it is done, restart and see what you get.
I hope some of this helps.

  • Problem with imported iphoto library

I imported my photo library from an older mac, all photos are there, but when I click on anyone to blow it up I get a giant exclamation mark and no photo. thumbnails are there, but can't view photos. Some permissions problem? Thanks
    Patrick

It is odd because the photo is visible for an instant before the ! shows up.
    That's just a cached image.
    Alternative:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Problems with importing Iphoto

Anyone having this problem?? I just got this computer last week and I scanned one picture. I tried to import it and the program keeps going and going and it won't import. But now everytime I go into I photo it asks do I want to import of course NO and here's for the weird part, everytime I try to import it the photo gets duplicated so now instead of 1 photo I have 10????
I have scanned and import other photos after this and I don't have this problem.
imac intel core   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

But this iPhoto Library came from somewhere else? Right? From another machine? So, how did those photos get into that iPhoto Library? Did you import one Library to another? I ask as this is one of the ways you could find yourself working with thumbnails and not the actual images.

  • Problem with rebuilding iPhoto library

    Hi,
I'm having problem to rebuild my iPhoto library. I have more than 11 000 photos / video clips and 70Gbs in my iPhoto library and everything has been ok until I started to import photos from my new iPhone 4. First issue was that when I imported photos from iPhone those new photos disappeared after restart of iPhoto. I read from somewhere that iPhoto library rebuild -functions might help and I rebuild the library and thumbnails. It actually worked for that problem. After that those photos which I imported from iPhone remained in iPhoto and I even got some disappeared photos back. But after that rebuilt I noticed that most of the video clips could not be opened inside iPhoto. When clicking thumbnail of a video clip just a big exclamation mark jumped up. I checked from iPhoto library originals -folder that those video clips still remain. From there I can open the clips in Quicktime Player. So, I tried to rebuild my library again. Rebuilding started ok, it went smoothly up to 65% but ceased there. Now it has been in that 65% -condition for 24 hours and I don't know what to do. I don't know if it's still actually doing something or not. "Force to quit" -function does not say that iPhoto is not answering and "System Monitoring" shows that there are still some messages going on in iPhoto -process. I don't know should I force iPhoto to quit or just wait another 24 hours...
Any advices what I should do and how I can get my video clip viewing back to iPhoto?
Computer is iMac 2006 with OS 10.6.8 and iPhoto is version 9.1.5. I have both Quicktime players (7 and 10) installed.

    Osku from Finland

If the rebuild doesn't help try Fix 101:  make a temporary, backup copy of the library if you don't already have a backup copy and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

Try re-install iPhoto and then run Software Update to bring it all to current versions.

    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
    2. Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name
    3. Re-install.

  • Problem with corrupted Iphoto libary thanks to "cleaning programmes"

    Problem description:
Iphoto library is corrupted, showing images as exclamation mark. Have recently used CleanMyMac, and suspect that is the problem. I have now tried to delete these cleaning programmes, but not sure I have completely succeeded? Also; what do I do next in order to restore my Iphoto library?
I read previous comments regarding the same problem, and run the Etresoft programme, and see that I still have some issues with MacPaw/CleanMyMac. So my questions are:
    1) How do I get completely rid of MacPaw/CleanMyMac?
    2) How do I go about fixing my iphoto library, which was the original problem?
( I am not able to understand the information provided below, so if there are any other areas of concern, please advise me!)

When you installed the Trial of Clean My Mac 2, there should have been an uninstaller in the installer bundle. Check, if there is the uninstaller, then run this application.
If there is no uninstaller, download and install "FindAnyFile" and search for files with  CleanMyMac2.  in the name.  You can reveal the files that are found in the Fnder and delete them this way.  Download it here:  http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/index.php
    To recover your iPhoto Library:
Make copy of the library as it now on an external drive.
Then use your Time Machine backup to restore the iPhoto library from a date before you cleaned the library. If you let CleanMyMac 2 remove duplicates, it will have deleted original image files and replaced them edited versions, and these links may be incorrect. It is hard to fix this manually. Restoring from your backup will be the best solution.

  • Screensaver configuration problem with lost iPhoto library

Hi,  I justed switched my macbook and I used to have another iPhoto library in an external HD that is now gone. I cannot configure the screensaver, I think it searches for my lost iPhoto library and cannot select my current pictures. Can someone help me with this problem? Thanks.

If the rebuild doesn't help try Fix 101:  make a temporary, backup copy of the library if you don't already have a backup copy and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.

  • Im having a problem with my iphoto library.  all of photos are outlines in gray with black background.

My iphoto library appears as white dotted outlines and black background.  I can only see the photos if i am scrolling?

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

Make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the three fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select options #1, #2 and #6.
    Fix #3
Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Problems with opening iPhoto !

how do i backup my photos they ae really important  , but this won't open ? do i uninstall yosemite or what ?

    Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store
