Problem with new HDD for Imac

I have installed a new HDD on my Imac power PC (!0.4.7) On powering up the disk utility can see the new HDD, but it says it is unmounted and it is not visible in list of volumes available for installing the OS. How can I wake it up?

You need to format it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) in Dick Utility.
You do this by selecting Erase from the options at the top of the window.

I am looking to buy an iMac 27", but it doesnt come with a HDD
So I wanted to know if I buy a new HDD for it, can I install Mavericks onto it and fit it to the iMac? How would I go about doing this?
I dont have access to another mac but I do have access to a windows machine. Can I do it from there?

Where are you buying an iMac 27-inch, Late 2009 model that has no internal hard disk drive?
Having to assume it was removed by an original owner, does the computer work? Was it tested by use of an externally enclosed HDD with a correct bootable system installed?
There are various repair and upgrade guides online, several topics among them and several are free to view or use. There likely is an iFixit guide that may cover that vintage of iMac 27-inch build year model.

While considering the hard disk drive, be sure that if there are any sensors or special cables required to be in place and attached to a new replacement, they are in place and working; some users of later models found when a hard disk drive was replaced, their fans ran at high and uncontrolled speeds due to lack of sensor input. The default situation was for the computer act as though the unit was overheated. And third party fan control software to set a fan at low slower speeds does not take into account faster speeds are needed to cool iMacs. Yours may not exhibit this issue, but I am not certain either way.
When you get it set up, with HDD and original Snow Leopard installed & updated to 10.6.8, be sure to check to see if there are any hardware or firmware updates. I see there was one listed for your model and it may already be installed...

Please share experience with new Webroot for iMac, iPad, etc.

Webroot has expanded its malware product beyond just spyware to a full-featured product for both PC and apple products. We have a 3-seat license and have installed it on our 2-year old iMac (on Lion), our original iPad (on iOS 5), and our PC. On the iMac, it scans for malware periodically, and I think it does continuous monitoring, but I have not yet figured out how to initiate an unscheduled scan. On the iPad, it appears as two apps, one of which appears to be a browser, which I haven't used yet. If you have this new Webroot on your Apple products, please share your experiences and thoughts about it, how you use it, and whether you think it is effective. Thank you.

I have done those things. I tried the same with an older ibook and three clicks and the airport icon showed an arrow (signaling it now is a base station) no problem but not on either of the leopard machines. is there a problem with sharing using leopard?
When I set the imac to share the ethernet connection and choose by airport the red Button changes to green. the preference window says "sharing your ethernet connection" but no change at the icon on the upper right menu bar. (I've always thought it changes to an arrow over the "radar" icon) if I close the sharing window and then reopen it or turn the airport on/off the internet sharing box becomes unchecked and sharing is turned off. I can't seem to get the radar icon to change and the sharing settings to stay "set".

Problem with New HDD and installation of Qosmio Player

Hi All,
Hope someone can help, I have had my Qosmio for 2 1/2 years now and recently had a problem with the hard disk. I decided to replace the hard disk as this was the quickest solution. The problem I have now is that I cannot receive TV on media center. I was trying to install qosmio player on the HDD to see if it made any difference but when I run the recovery disk supplied the software tells me that there is not enough disk space!!. The laptop came with a 60G hard disk and the new HDD made by the same manufacturer is a 150GB, can anyone help me out with this one would be appreciated.

Sorry my previous entry was garbled. I upgraded the HDD to 120, could not get the Qosimo player to reload, same error, No space on HDD.
I then upgraded to Vista and downloaded the new Vista Qosimo drivers, created the ISO image and booted from it. Still did not work.

I have problems with new photos for photostream.

I have a problem with upload of new photos to a stream I have made in iCloud.
I made this stream last friday and had no problem. But today when i tried to upload new pictures i got a problem.
When I'm in the photostream and i choose to add new photo, I'm able to choose the picture, but after this it freeze/lock and I don't get the possibility to publish the picture or do anything else.
I'm working on an iPad2.
Please - what to do?

Quit all apps: Double tap the Home button and swipe the app preview page up for each open app
then
Reset: Hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons and don’t let go until the screen goes dark and the Apple logo appears (no data will be lost)

Display problems with new Retina 5k iMac

I have just bought and started for the first time my iMac retina 5k. Initially the monitor looked great and i was really impressed.
I have just come back after stepping away for a few minutes and the monitor display seems stretched or skewed horizontally. This is happening on the home screen, webpages and even photos.
I don't believe i changed anything to have this effect and now whatever I do in the displays set up in system preferences it remains unchanged.
Can someone advise me please

Since it's a new machine, contact Apple's Support and let them deal with the issue. BTW, you can return it the first 14 days with no questions asked.

If you want it, buy it. The posts above are right on the mark (except waiting is probably overly-cautious). The best advice (from anamusic) is to buy the extended warranty - well worth the money.

Try booting in Safe Mode by holding the the shift key immediately after powering on your system. Safe boot mode will for a directory check of your startup volume, then load only the required kernal extensions (kext files), and deletes some cache files. Once the system boots into Safe Mode you can simply restart the system to see whether the issue has been resolved.
If you still have the issue try resetting the SMC by shutting down the system and disconnecting the power cord for ~15 seconds, then reconnecting the power cord. Next, reset the parameter RAM (PRAM) by holding down the option-option-P-R keys after powering ON the system. Wait until the iMac restarts twice, then let the system boot normally.

Had the same problem as you. App would terminate when launched.
Solution to working You Tube app:
-Go to playstore
- Uninstall app (it doesn't remove the app, only removes the update)
- "Et Voila", working again.
This doesn't correct the problem, it's just a workaround for you to be able to use youtube app again.

Wifi problems with new ipad

I'm trying to learn how to correct wifi problems with new iPad. It is the wifi only, 64GB model. I want to be able to use it at work, where we have a great wifi network. I can usually connect to our network with no problem, but after an hour or so my iPad loses the network. When I try to reconnect, I see that the network is showing full strength reception, but I get the error message from the iPad that I am "Unable to join" the network. My iPhone connects to the same network seamlessly, as do all of the other iPhones of my co-workers and the older generation iPads that some of our staff has.
At other locations, I typically have no problems (home, apple store, etc.) but I have had the same situation pop up at a coffee shop where I could see that there was a wifi network available, but I could not join it even though it was the shop's free wifi.
I have tried turning the iPad off, turning off wifi and turning it back on again, and forgetting the wifi network in question. I can't think of any other methods that are available to an end user to correct the problem.
I have already gone to the Apple store to swap out the unit, and the newer one is having the same symptoms.
Can anyone offer any advice here? This is quite frustrating.

Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.

- At first doesn't open full page message list or retain full page as default setting, have to drag down bar
- Only shows 20 message lines after “pulling down” the divider, screen partially empty until I scroll down. It should show at least 26, preferably all available
- After moving bar, bar moves back up after going back to inbox (not delete message) after reading a message, have to move it down again, and again...
- Doesn't go to next message when delete message on screen is selected, no setting option for default to do this.
- There is a drop down to select which folder to move a selected email to. The initial display shows 7 usable choices, with the usual slider and arrow to show more choices. The space on the slider clearly shows more choices are present (actually about 20 or so are there), but any attempt to use the slider or arrow to see more choices causes the drop-down to instantly disappear. I can't move the selected field with arrow keys either. I can select any of the visible 7 choices, and move an email to only one of the 7. NOTE: This one works in both IE and Firefox, but if Verizon Webmail was fully web standard (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_standards) compliant it would also work in my preferred browser, Mozilla Seamonkey, the direct descendant of the original Mozilla browser. Webmail should be FULLY web standard.
- Occasionally a message will move from inbox to trash, without NO indication or command to move them.
- Emails occasionally flash an error message and simply disappear - not to trash or other findable place, just disappear. No time to read the error message either.
- No way to set a whitelist for supposed spam emails, unless the whitelist for “Blocking” is the same. Very unclear.
- How can I switch my service back to the original, basic, email which works ok? I know it’s still there, since some of my other accounts still access it!!!
This seems my only way of getting this info direclty to the programming staff. If it doesn't actually do this, will SOMEONE PLEASE FORWARD THIS MESSAGE TO THEM !?!

You should look into something called Acronis true image. I see in the Lenovo forums about people using them all the time with no problems what so ever. An example is someone used it to copy the old drive to a new drive (like your wanting to do) and booted up with no problems. They had everything. The only thing I did see is that you can not put it to a smaller drive (don't see why someone would want to do that anyways)

Best way to manage new library with new hdd. Need Advice.

I am new to this whole aperture thing. i've been reading about aperture for a few months now. there's just so much to soak in at this moment. i'm about to put in a 320gb hdd in my 1st gen mbp and i would like the best or really just the most efficient way to managing my images. what i am trying to do is import all my images (20gbs right now just family/friend stuff) into my mbp on the new hdd. i am also in the process of getting a 30d or 40d for my photo work.
should i partition out the new hdd for aperture or just keeping it one partition. one of my partitions will be for bootcamp. i just dont want to partition it and run out of space in the partition. i also have 2 externals (300gb and 400gb) that i will use one of them for vault?, external backup. im also trying to scan all my film stuff and put it in there and manage that too. i also want to use iphoto too so is there a way to use one library for both without one or the other making doubles?
i read about the manage and referenced masters methods, but i'm still a little confused on it. i would like to know how you guys manage your libraries and how u organized your folders. i read about people setting up raids on their mac pros but i would like to know more about people who doing the managing on their mbps. i running on leopard but are not using time machine. i currently have my folders setup in this way, i.e. 20080224-vacation pics day 1. there's prolly more to ask but i cant think of any right now. any help is appreciated.

On a laptop generally you do want to manage by Referencing image Masters. Hard drives slow as they fill, so at some point - perhaps immediately - you will want your Masters on one or more external Firewire 800 hard drives. OWC <http://www.owcomputing.com/> "Mercury to go" FW800/USB2 drives are a good external solution if you need portable.
A good rule of thumb is not to fill any drive more than 70%, and for best speed keep important drives no more than 50% full.
With Referenced Masters, simply Finder-copy each batch of images to the external hard drive and eject the camera card. Then (after backup of images) from within Aperture Import the images by Reference (when you go to import, on the right hand side of the import window select "Store files in their current location").
Existing images on your hard drive can similarly be imported selecting "Store files in their current location" however personally I would move the originals to an external drive prior to importing into Aperture because trying to keep originals on a laptop drive will sooner or later overfill the drive.
During the import process is a good time to assign all manner of keywords, so take some time in advance thinking about keywording.
Also, I recommend the US$35 tutorial CD Apple Pro Training Series: Aperture 2 (Apple Pro Training Series) by Ben Long, Richard Harrington, and Orlando Luna (Paperback - May 8, 2008), Amazon.com. Note that the value is in the tutorial, not in using the book as a manual.

There are several possible causes for this problem.
1. Two (or more) computers on the local network have the same Bonjour name, such as "X's-MacBook-Pro.local".
2. You have two simultaneous connections to the same local network: probably Ethernet and Wi-Fi. If applicable, disconnect the Ethernet cable or turn off Wi-Fi.
3. A Mac wakes from sleep due to network traffic. This is due to a bug in OS X that may only affect some models.
4. A device that gets its network address from the router wakes from sleep, and the address it was using before has been assigned to another device.
5. A third-party wireless router has incompatible settings or firmware. In that case, refer to the manufacturer or ISP for support. Restarting the router may help, temporarily.
