Problem with Pixel Bender
Hi - I am 85 years old and not very experienced with computer jargon etc. My problems with Pixel Benders only started after I recently had my Dell 64 bit computer upgraded. Previously it used Windows XP and had 4 gigs of RAM my graphics card had only 64 MB. HOWEVER, before the upgrade Pixel Bender filters worked perfectly, I have a folder in "My Pictures" that contains 65 images that have all been treated with a variety of P B filters, I am very pleased with the results. My software includes Photoshop CS5 also Lightroom 3.
My upgrade, done by a professional technician, involved, wiping my internal hard drive completely (everything was backed up on two external hard drives) the installation of Windows 7 - 64 bit and additional RAM (it now has 8 gigs) When it came to re installing the Pixel Benders it was a nightmare. I had to make several calls to Adobe technical support before it would download I even had to allow the technician to access my computer. The next problem was that the Pixel Benders would no work. I looked at the Adobe Forum and found that others had experienced the same problem. One solution seemed to be to install a graphics card with more MB, I therefore bought a GeForce GTSD 250 that has 1 GB of RAM. Whereas the 65 pictures in my Pixel Bender folder are 2000 pixels on the longest edge using my new system and graphics card the Pixel Bender filters will not work on any image that is more than 1000 pixels on the longest edge. Can anyone out there explain the reason for this?

Alpha channel problem with Pixel Bender blendShaders
I'm using Pixel Blender to try and create a blend shader for a Flex 4.0 app.
It looks like this:
<languageVersion : 1.0;>
kernel PixelReverse
< namespace : "com.abc.def.filters";
vendor : "EdAlive";
version : 1;
>
input image4 foreground;
input image4 background;
output pixel4 dst;
void
evaluatePixel()
pixel4 fgPixel = sampleNearest(foreground, outCoord());
pixel4 bgPixel = sampleNearest(background, outCoord());
if((bgPixel.r == 0.0) && (bgPixel.g == 0.0) && (bgPixel.b == 0.0) && (bgPixel.a == 0.0)){
bgPixel.r = bgPixel.g = bgPixel.b = 1.0;
dst.r = 1.0 - abs(fgPixel.r - bgPixel.r);
dst.g = 1.0 - abs(fgPixel.g - bgPixel.g);
dst.b = 1.0 - abs(fgPixel.b - bgPixel.b);
dst.a = fgPixel.a;
It looks correct in the Pixel Bender preview window.
When I use it in a Flex project with proper 32 bit png images, the filter seems to work correctly, except it sets any partial alpha value on the images to fully opaque (like a 1 bit alpha channel).
Because the image preview looks correct in Pixel Bender, I'm assuming it's a problem with the bitmap data that Flex is passing to the blend shader filter.
I tried changing the filter to simply output a copy of the foreground firstly, and the background second, to test.
When returning a copy of the foreground, the imags weren't visible on stage, either because the pixels were transparent or because it was really returning the background pixels, camouflaging the images.
When returning a copy of the background, the images were just black rectangles.
The images are being place on stage programmatically inside an mx Module, and having their depth property set.
They also have draggable behaviour, where the current drag object is layered above all else during the drag.
I'm actually using a subclass of mx.controls.Image, but am simply setting the source property with preloaded bitmap data, so I'm am fairly sure the subclass is not a factor.
I hope this is enough information for someone to be able to provide some help.
ThanksPlease make sure you have installed the latest graphics drivers, from http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us, for your graphics card.

Problems with pixel bender toolkit 2.5 for photoshop cs5
hi, i just installed the pixel bender toolkit 2.5 and i am trying to use it on photoshop but it won`t appear on the filters menu, and there should be a folder named Pixel Bender Files in the photoshop cs5 folder but there isn't any.. so what is going on???
It will NOT work, PB has been totally ruined.
So what I did was to upgrade to PS CS6, and its there in the filter menu.
I didnt get back to this forum till today, and sorry I didnt get the info to post ready.
Ive used the oil paint filter a lot since, its worth the upgrade to PS 6. But its nasty of them to take stuff out that we like to make us spend more $.
So, Warning,,,,,Im going OT here,,,,,,Apple has stripped out some of our old and favourite things when we upgrade to the new OS 10.9(Mavericks), and we are very unhappy with what they have done. Ive found some workarounds, but the really eyecandy stuff is gone from our screen savers, Mosiac, and some other things.
Is this cost cutting? Nope, not with AAPL, they have penty of dough.
Is this just youngsters in the app developing work who have not used the older and nice stuff? We dont know, but what ever you do, DO NOT give your older Macs away, as you will lose some of this fun stuff, and Adobe better learn too, as we oldsters use the old stuff. I dont like the Cloud prices either, so I upgraded all my Adobe stuff before they did that.
And do NOT get rid of the old PSE programs, as you can scan paper money and I use it for my web page background images, but I do distort it.
Im getting off into a rant, so I must stop, but I think these companies whoare making lots of money and have good products, should not mess with the good stuff. Hang on to your old programs and your old computers! -
WHY: Crashing problems with Pixel-Bender Plug-In in PS CS5...
WHY is my PS CS5 crashing, when TRYING to use Pixel Bender Plug-In...?!?
Its correctly installed, shows up in the Filtermenubar of PS, It just shows the first filter and when I try to choose another one, PS just shuts down...?!?
(PS CS5 (12.0) (Win 32–bit) / (W7 Ultimate, 2GB RAM, P6100 2GHz, 118 Gb free of 195 GB Harddrive).
PlugIn from http://www.adobe.com/devnet/pixelbender.html
HELP PLEASE... Thanks !!!PB requires a reasonably juicy graphics hardware and well, your specs clearly indicate that this is not the case. It will probably never work, but as a minor update your graphics driver...

Can I make custom blend modes with Pixel Bender 3d?
So it seems PixelBender does not work in GPU mode, which is essential in iOS.
I want to create a custom blend mode for adobe air in iOS and was wondering if it is possible with Pixel Bender 3d.for the mesh, hexagon is actually better than photoshop. Since it can create the actual mesh. Though, you can import the mesh into photoshop so you can see it while you paint the texture.
The 3d creation portion of photoshop is still a bit limiting. (But my experience stops with CS5. I have not tried CS6 yet, so impovement could have been made)
The issue I have with hexagon is the amount of bugs in it. I prefer a more robust and more expensive alternative. But thats me
A free alternative is Blender. But I find the UI a bit outdated and hard to grasp. But again, thats me.
Generate your UV maps as you normally would then load them into photoshop and get painting. You may like other texture generating apps to go along with photoshop. Genetica is great for making tileable textures. -
Problem Opening Pixel Bender Filter
I just recently downloaded this Pixel Bender Filter for Photoshop CS4 (Win 32-bit). I downloaded it and finished installing with the adobe extension manager. However when I tried to use the pixel bender filter, photoshop becomes non responding and says: Adobe Photoshop CS4 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. Does anyone know why this is happening? Looks like a sick filter and I wanna use it!
ThanksI believe your card is a shader model 2 card, we require a minimum of shader model 3, so the Pixel Bender plugin should warn you up front that your graphics hardware is not supported. I'm not sure why the plugin is not doing so but I do not expect Pixel Bender to work on your hardware. Sorry.

The card is a NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M and has 256 mb. This is a brand new MBP 15" 2.4 GHz i5 cpu. When I turn off the GPU in photoshop then it process's the image but with a lot of stops as its thinking. Images are from a 7D canon and are between 21-25 mb in size My workflow is through Lightroom anf the exportet file from lightroom into PS is at 240 DPI so the image do get kind of large. have not tryed to reduce size yet. -
My wife is working on an iDVD project of old and new family photos. She is having a particular problem when playing the dvd back on a television.
She shows a close-up of an old photo that was scanned into the computer. She then zooms out and creates a still image of that photo using "save frame as." She then adds a title that is not as long as the entire clip so it splits the clip.
When we play this back on a television through a DVD player, the second one (without the title) distorts and becomes somewhat pixelated. It is worse on some photos than on others.
Is this a problem that can be rectified with a slower burn speed? We don't notice the pixelation when we watch it on our computer prior to burning. Help us if you can. Thanks!Temporary SOLUTION!!!
Mac know about the problem with iDVD6 and are working on it!
iDvd 6 doesn't understand volume changes / audio clip changes (cuts) in the second/ bottom audio track..... This is causing major hassles for dialogue drops in backing audio with iMovies putting forward a perfect film that iDVD6 can't follow!!
In the meantime an Apple support guy called Ben Donelly ( God Bless Him!!)
Has found us a lifeline!!!
This is the temporarfy work around.... and you must watch the clock time wise in iMovie and garage band ( which you're going to use!) so that you can change the up's & down s in volume in time with footage.
Firstly import your audio files to GARAGEBAND (the guitar symbol!!)
click the disclosure triangle for the track.
( i did this by exporting from iTunes!)
Change the track volume by selecting master then deal with it as you would in iMovie.
When you've done all your changes ( Cuts can be done too!) at the time points you have in iMovie export the whole track to iTunes by choosing share.
In I movie select the new song you have titled in the media section of iTunes!
My faith is Restored!!!
Thank you Ben Donelly!!

Problem with pixel aspect ratio
I searched but found no answer.
I have several Maya renders which are at a resolution of 720x486 and a pixel aspect ratio of 1.2. I composited my image sequences in after effects interpreting that 1.2 pixel aspect ratio. I then exported a quicktime movie using no compression at 24fps at a resolution of 720x480 NTSC 16:9.
When I import this video into Encore 2.0 It comes out as full screen. Not only is it full screen, but when I preview the dvd, the video is blurry with scan lines and black bars on the left and right side. The menu however, is widescreen (I used a template as a test)and perfectly clear. I tried to select the asset and go to file>interpret footage, but this option is grayed out. I have also tried exporting an avi from after effects and importing that into Encore. It still will not let me set the pixel aspect ratio. I have read that After Effects does not embed the pixel aspect into exported videos. I have also read that I should export mpeg2 videos for use in Encore, however I do not see this option in After effects or Premiere Pro.
What am I doing wrong? Any help is appreciated. If I left any information out that could be useful, please let me know.(Ack, for some reason I typed "DVI" and really meant "DV")
Thanks for the response. I don't really care if I preserve the 4:3 aspect ratio. Or does my GL1 not use square pixels and I just never noticed it? It's strange I've never seen this problem until FCE HD.
I have tried exporting a number of ways from FCE, including Export > QuickTime Movie... and Using QuickTime Conversion... For the latter, I typically set it to export as 720x480. I always export as video. The final export contains video clips as well as still images within the video.
I am a bit embarrassed having to ask this question. I've been working with still images in photoshop for over a decade and worked a lot with video during that time as well.
Thanks again. -
Problem with pixelation when creating a pdf
Hi,
A client sent me an InDesign file and a PDF of what that file made. I was asked to make some text edits. I finish and export to pdf. When viewing my new pdf at 100% the images are pixelated really bad. The original pdf they are high quality images at 100%. I didn't mess with the images at all. I don't know what I am doing wrong.
Any help would be appreciated.
Extra info
ID CS6
Images are jpegs
High quality prin settings
Compress jpegs (maximum quality)
Do not downsampleInDesign creates low resolution previews of placed graphics (to enable quicker screen draws).
When you opened the file you should have been alerted that the document contained missing links.
During the work time on the file, the links panel would have shown similair to
InDesign probably also alerted when you exported to pdf.
If you have instructed InDesign to disable warnings, you should consider turning them back on from the Preferences panel

Can anyone please help? Problems with Pixel's Proslice.
Using proslice to do a split screen. Two cameras, one camera's audio is being used, the other's is not. I am having to sync the cameras' clips via audio. I am having trouble with the correct protocol and order of events to make this happen. Pixel's info on proslice methodology for different scenarios is slim to none. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Or, highlight them both in the Browser, right-click, from the pop-up menu select "Syncronize Clips".
Then highlight tha new Sync Clip it makes (a specialized Compound Clip) in the Browser, look in the Inspector, in the Audio section, towards the bottom for Channel Configuration. You may also want to right-click it and select "Open In Timeilne" to see how it matched up and tweak it if necessary.
I don't have ProSlice, so I've no clue what that requires. -
Photoshop CS4, Pixel Bender, Mavericks OS ERRORS
I recently upgraded to Mavericks and am using Photoshop CS4. When I attempt to use Pixel Bender Filters, I get the following error messages for all of the plugins:
ERROR: (line0): require metadata “namespace” of wrong type.
Expected string
ERROR: (line0) required metadata “vendor” of wrong type. Expected string
ERROR: (line 0) required metadata “version” of wrong type. Expected int
I have no clue what is going on. PSD files that have Pixel Bender filters applied on Smart Objects will open but simply attempting to turn off one of the filters causes Photoshop to crash.
HELP!Hi there,
I have made some serious progress with this. I too was having difficulty with Pixel Bender in Mavericks and have tried with CS4,5,6 and CC. This morning I had a major breakthrough on CS5. I have successfully loaded and run the Pixel Bender plugins. I am however still crashing when attempting to run the Fractal Explorer plugins. Here is what you may need to do to correct the error messages and any issues loading with the Adobe Extension Manager.
1. Download this plugin Pixel Bender Accelerator for Photoshop and follow their direction to place the plugin - http://aescripts.com/pixel-bender-accelerator-for-photoshop/#upgrade-notice
2. Download and run the CS5 Extension Manager update (I used the 5.0.3 version) - Adobe Extension Manager Updates Downloads
3. Install the Pixel Bender Plugin through the updated Extension Manager and "replace all" if necessary.
I think that covers any steps I made to correct this. All the filters in the Pixel Bender gallery work except for the Fractal Explorer plugins at this point, and I believe thats a RAM issue I am having. Please let me know if this helps and if you discover anything along the way.
30 min later...
I just solved the last issue and ran the fractal explorer filters successfully. Once you have the Pixel Bender library accessible in Photoshop, run the Pixel bender accelerator with your image open and saved as a smart object. Once you have applied the accelerator all filter can be used in the pixel bender gallery. No crashing or error messages!! -
Advanced Flex / Pixel Bender interactions
Hello,
I've been looking through the documentation on both Pixel Bender and Flex, and I'm trying to figure out if this even possible:
Basically I start out with floating point image data in a ByteArray and I'd like to run a Pixel Bender filter or shader job on the data in floating point, then convert it to 8-bit / channel RGBA on the output.
I know I can start with a 8-bit BitmapData and use a Pixel Bender shader to produce a new 8-bit BitmapData. Or I can start with a floating point ByteArray, use ShaderJob to compute a new floating point ByteArray. Can I use ByteArray input and output to BitmapData? Put another way, do the input and output classes/dimensions of a shader job or pixel bender filter have to match? I'd like to take advantage of the fact that when using a BitmapData object, Pixel Bender (or Flash), converts the floating point Pixel Bender data to 8-bit for you automatically. It would also save me the trouble of unpacking a linear list of floats into a 2-dimensional image with setPixel32() calls.
Thanks all.Hi David -
Thanks for those examples. The audio visualizer is pretty cool, but looks like the author witheld the source code for us to look at .
I did find another blog posting that's helpful too - converting a BitmapData object into a Vector of RGBA floats with Pixel Bender:
http://webr3.org/blog/general/pixelbender-is-more-useful-than-i-assumed/comment-page-1/
I'll see if I can figure out going backwards.
I'm curious if anyone could shed light on what's going on with memory under the covers. I found another blog post that treats a Vector as if it's a 2-dimensional object like an image:
http://blog.robskelly.com/2009/02/using-pixel-bender-for-math-in-flashflex/
This raises questions about what do the width and height input/output parameters actually control if you can treat a flat Vector as an object with width and height? Does anyone know? Does that only work with Vectors? What about ByteArrays? Does this basically mean that width/height are only convenience parameters and you could put any 2 numbers that multiply to the size of your data? How does this affect the input type inside the shader (image1 vs image4)? Why does Rob Skelly's example above even work at all?
I'll hack away at trying to get stuff working, and re-post if I figure something out. -
How do I use Pixel Bender effects?
So I've installed the Pixel Bender Toolkit. How do I use .pbk effects in After Effects CS4?
Mylenium is right. You work with effect plug-ins written with Pixel Bender the same way that you work with effect plug-ins written in C/C++. All of the information that you need should be in the
"Plug-ins" section of After Effects Help. In the comments of that section, there are some links to Tom Beddard's site, where he has some great examples of Pixel Bender effect plug-ins. Tom gives detailed instructions about installing his Pixel Bender effect plug-ins, if you really want to see it laid out step by step.
