Problem with .png images being black boxes in InDesign

Hello,
I'm hoping someone might be able to help me with a problem I'm having with some .png files.  When I try to place certain .png files in my InDesign document, they come in as just black boxes.  The .png files are created by a third party application, (EditLive w/MathFlow)  But if I view the .png files in Fireworks or other image viewers, they appear to be fine.  I have tried looking at the image properties inside InDesign, to see if by tweaking them it might work, but I am not a graphic designer by trade so my knowledge is rather limited.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Specs:
Windows XP
CS4 Suite including:
     Adobe InDesign CS4
     Fireworks CS4
Thanks,
Josh

That worked!  Mostly.  The little preview box on the file upload dialog still shows a black box.  But when the image is placed inside the doc it looks perfect.  Well, as perfect as the .png can look.
Is there any way within InDesign to "ignore" the alpha channel or whatever of the graphic?  I have access to the IDML as well as the normal application interface & the SDK through the InDesign Server.  I'd prefer not to be reliant on opening the image in another tool, as we have a large number of images to process some times & it could get annoying.  If not, I can try contacting the 3rd party group that is generating the .png & see if they can better handle the alpha channel when they're creating the image maybe...
And thanks for the quick responses!

  • DW CS3 problem with PNG-8 images in Design View?

DW CS3 (build 3481) on XP seems to have problems with PNG-8 images, specifically trying to display them in design view.
I had a very simple image that was able to be exported by Fireworks CS4 as PNG-8 using 4 colors (no transparency) for a tiny file size under 250 bytes.
DW could not display it at all, or even recognize it, reporting it was 0 x 0 in size. I published the page anyway, and it looked fine in the browser.
I upped the number of colors to 32, and DW could then display it in design view in the page I was working on.
I'm still having problems with other PNG-8 images. The attached file "temp.jpg" is a screenshot showing part of the design view in DW.
The smaller image on the left of the banner is "58_certificate_of_discharge.png" (attached), and the larger image below is used as the background of the DIV containing the form,"compassbk.png" (also attached).
These images all look fine in the browser, but terrible in DW.
    I'm stumped as to why.
    Thanks in advance.

According to a different discussion, the images that are stuck as "Queued" are showing a bug in the virus scanning on the forums.
Now trying the recommended 'camera icon' method...
    Looks like it worked.
Now compare what it looks like in DW CS3 in the design view:
    It's a 16 color PNG-8 made in Fireworks CS4 with no transparency, size is 113 x 58, ending up at 1.71K.
If this is a repeatable problem in CS3, is there any hope of it being resolved, or am I stuck with upgrading to CS4 as my only option (assuming it's fixed in CS4)?
    Thanks.

  • Problem with importing images shifting text

    Hi,
I custom designed a heading and menu on a blank page, and then I added images for a slide show (hyperlinked each one with next previous). My logo or heading is in the exact same place but when you go from one page to the next it giggles/or looks like it's shifting (this looks horrible when you are going through the images). The images are PNG and not very big in size (approx. 380 pixels by 580 at 72 DPI). The text shifting problem does not happen if the images are shrunk or kept at a really small size. I've tried everything I can think of and it def. has to do with the images being a certain size, but it does not make sense as I should be able to work with images that are this size -- they are not even very big to begin with! Any help would be so greatly appreciated. THanks!
    Best,
    Corinne

you appear to be a mac genius
Thanks for the compliment but mostly I just regurgitate what I've learned here. Regarding the image size I don't think you need to do anything. The only set of photos that are jpgs and can be downloaded are those in the Mollen and Drew section. The rest of them are java based and cannot be downloaded, only obtained via a screen capture. I don't know what you did differently for Mollen and Drew's page but it is different from all the others in that first gallery. However, the other pages can take the view to the overall gallery were the links to Blank # are visible. The few pages I visited of those, Blank 34 and 41 had jpgs for the large view that could be downloaded. Is that what you want? If so you might consider putting a watermark on the photos. This example was done with Photoshop but there are 3rd party applications that can automate the process, putting any text or icon on the photo in the location of your choice. iWatermark is just one of several. You can find them at VersonTracker.com.
The current iWeb converts the photos to 800 x 600 and uses java for the slideshow and gallery. This makes it more difficult to download a photo. A viewer would have to make a screenshot of it in order to get a copy.
Of the five one your gallery page only Mollen and Drew are of the type of page that has jpgs as the larger image. How was that page created as opposed to the one for Georgeen and Tobias. They are two different types of photo/slideshow pages.

  • Trouble converting powerpoint files with png images to pdf-Can someone help?

    Hello all,
In my line of work, I create and modify large sized posters that are created in powerpoint. I would have the files print ready by converting them to pdf. I usually have little to no issues executing this. However, I have been dealing with an issue of converting ppt files with png images. The size of the ppt is typically a 42x56 file. The several ways to convert to pdf produces an error each time. Png images are very useful as they provide much clarity vs jpegs or tiffs. The 3 ways I have tried below are:
    A) File>Print>Adobe PDF>High Quality print settings/300dpi results to an error message that says:
"Windows cannot print due to a problem with the current print setup. Try one of the following:
*Check the printer by printing a test page from Windows.
*Make sure the printer is turned on and online.
         *Reinstall the printer driver"
A blank pdf opens up (Selected to open file after publishing)
    B) File>Save as> Change file type as a pdf results in nothing happening. No pdf is produced.
    C) Acrobat>Create PDF results to an error message that says: "An unexpected error occured. PDFMaker was unable to produce the Adobe PDF."
Again, this all happens with ppt files with png images. I took out the png images and attempted to convert to pdf, and the pdf is produced!
Can anyone provide any assistance in creating pdfs with png images or what settings I need to adjust? I am able to covert every other image type (jpeg, tiff, bmp), except for png images.
I am using Microsoft Office 2010 with Adobe Acrobat X on Windows 7 (This happened on Windows XP as well).

    >I have a 48 slide presentation that has a small .png image in the "slide
    >master" so it will show up on every page.
PowerPoint only has to store one instance of the image even thought it is
displayed on multiple slides. But Acrobat can't do the same, the image has
to be stored for every page that it appears on, so that would explain the
    larger file size.
Acrobat is supposed to be able to optimize the storage of common background
images (at least that's the message I see when I do a "Save as..."), but I
have yet to see it to work. Maybe it depends on the application the orginal
file is created in and the PDF conversion method used.
Adding the image into a PDF file later as a watermark instead may be a way
to keep the size down (then it really only does store the object once),
though I believe that watermark images will appear in front of everything
else on the page (not sure if that's a problem for you, it depends on
whether any text or objects in the presentation ever appear in front of the
    image).
What are the dimensions and resolution of the image in PowerPoint? You may
be able to go as low as 75 dpi and not notice a difference, it depends on
whether the image contains any areas of high contrast or text.

  • Import powerpoint with png images on slide(s)

    L.s.,
I imported several ppt documents with png images on the slides, I noticed that sometimes png images are damaged or not visible.
My search for differences between the source files was not succesfull.
Has this behaviour been noticed before?
    Regards,
    Peter

Hello Peter, welcome on the Forum.
Which version of CP do you use and which version of Powerpoint? PNG is the format used internally in Captivate (heard this from the team), so it seems a bit odd that those images are damaged. You could of course import them (images) directly in the library and put them on the slides in CP while editing. Perhaps you could post a screenshot? Use the camera icon in the toolbar of the message box to insert the screenshot.

  • Problem with Atf, Image distortion

I got a problem with image Distortion
Here my atf in atf viewer: [IMG]http://i.imgur.com/d75aU.png[/IMG]
Heres my atf in FLashPlayer using 11.4.402.287: [IMG]http://i.imgur.com/H2vEV.png[/IMG]
notice the red pixel in the green part of the texture.
Im using png2atf with no parameters.

Are you writing of problems with the image displayed on your screen? Anyway that you can post a screenshot (to make a whole screenshot, hold down the Shift, Command and 3 keys at the same time). Upload your screenshot using the camera icon in the composition bar above.
It would also help to know which model MacBook Pro you have - 15" late 2011, for example.

There is the problem with PNG transparency and IE:

    It is IE problem.

JPEGs do not allow transparency, so forget about using JPEGs
    for such a
    cases.

  • My 3rd generation Apple TV has a problem with ghosting images.

My 3rd generation Apple TV has a problem with ghosting images.  Whenever it switches to a black screen (between screens, during shows) images from the previous screen are still "visible" and it's driving me insane.  I know it's not the TV, no other components have the issue.  I've tried switching out HDMI cables to no avail.  Anyone else have this issue or know of a fix?

To fix the Apple TV, you need to plug it into your Mac or PC with a USB cable, open iTunes, and restore the firmware on your Apple TV.

  • Problem with Gif image

Having a problem with gif image not showing up. It will show up in netscape6.2, but not in IE 5.0. Both are using the java 1.4 plugin. They are basic buttons (zoom in, zoom out, etc) and they actions work, just the icons aren't showing. Any help would be great! Below is a snip of code:

    toolbar.add(identify);
    toolbar.add(btn);
    add(toolbar, BorderLayout.NORTH);
    Thanks again for any help!

I used to do a lot of work in this sort of thing. After a while we were able to convince our bosses to use generated HTML (JSPs, etc.), so the problem moved to porting JavaScript to different platforms! (Platforms in this context means the different browser/OS combinations, etc.).
The only two things I can recommend are:
    - complete control over you code. You will have to fix it! (Tried you apps on a Mac yet?)
    - assume a minimal install. Don't assume users are going to have any fancy tools installed on their PC, unless you are developing an Intranet app, where you know the spec of the machines that are going to be using it.
As regarding getting IE to use a relative address, I don't think you are going to have any luck their, I'm afraid! (Although I am curious. It has been some time, but I though it did use relative addresses. Are you absolutely sure about this, did you check this out with System.outs and that?

  • I want to highlight various words in a pages document with a yellow or black box behind the text

I want to use a highlighter in Pages. I know how to do it in steps.. but would like a shortcut to highlight various words throughout the document with a yellow or black box behind the text.. help

I got another idea. Create a style with the text and background colour you want. You can apply a short cut for that style. Beware that the styles is only for that particular document but you can import styles or you can use Save as Template and keep it as a template.

I personally haven't experienced much of the "reverberation/feedback" when using a headset on the i4S...
Yes, I have near-perfect hearing too (for scope, squeaky brakes hurt my ears) I come from many conversations on many phones and types and first off, CDMA technology is great for coverage, terrible for voice quality. HD Voice in Europe made for some of the best phone conversations I've ever had.
Back on track, feedback is most noticable (similar to the landline phone) when using the iPhone without a headset, but for me it's not an absolute criticality mainly because I use VoIP apps alot, so maybe it has desensitized me some over the past year.
But whenever I'm on a call, and the other person has me on speakerphone, I have alot of trouble talking because of the feedback loop caused. So the less of my voice I hear the better I can talk.
Have you tried a bluetooth headset yet?

Save/Export them as JPG. Photoshop defaults to PSD, so make sure you select JPG and not just rename the file to .jpg.
There are two ways to save them as JPG: Regular Save as option or Save for Web & Devices
    Take your pick.

    Hello!

    BLOB_CONTENT BLOB

When you have a problem you'll get a faster, more effective response by including as much relevant information as possible upfront. This should include:
    <li>Full APEX version
    <li>Full DB/version/edition/host OS
<li>Web server architecture (EPG, OHS or APEX listener/host OS)
    <li>Browser(s) and version(s) used
    <li>Theme
    <li>Template(s)
<li>Region/item type(s) (making particular distinction as to whether a "report" is a standard report, an interactive report, or in fact an "updateable report" (i.e. a tabular form)
With APEX we're also fortunate to have a great resource in apex.oracle.com where we can reproduce and share problems. Reproducing things there is the best way to troubleshoot most issues, especially those relating to layout and visual formatting. If you expect a detailed answer then it's appropriate for you to take on a significant part of the effort by getting as far as possible with an example of the problem on apex.oracle.com before asking for assistance with specific issues, which we can then see at first hand.
