Problem with PSE 9 spot healing brush in content aware

When I try to use the spot healing brush to remove an object with content aware, it appears to work, then I get the Windows Error message, and PSE 9 shuts down.  I have 2 GB RAM and plenty of scratch disc room.  Any one else have this problem?

The problem is obviously a program error. The problem may be resolved by comparing the code to CS5 which we know works without a problem.
So what's the plan Adobe??!!!!!
Is there a solution?? I seem to remember a problem in version 7 or 6 which had to do with P4 Hyper threading and the same processors. One of the biggest reasons for upgrading to PE9 is content aware. Without it working how many sales are lost? With the state of our economy it is much more difficult to justify an additional expense for another computer or Phoroshop CS5!!
Let's fix this!!
A response would be appreciated.

  • Roblem with the Spot Healing Brush Tool in CS5

I have a problem with the Spot Healing Brush Tool in CS5. When opening a number of files to work on them the Spot Healing Brush works initially fine and without any problems. After a few files the Spot Healing Brush doesn't work any longer, even I didn't changed any settings. So far I solved the problem by closing and reopening CS5 which is not a very efficent way to solve the problem Does anybody have an idea what is causing the problem and more important how I can fix it.

A visual guide just in case
To reset, select your Tool, right, or ctrl-click (Mac) on its' icon in the top Option bar, and you should see  the reset menu.

  • Problems using the Spot Healing Brush

I've tried to use the spot healing brush on a number of photos but it doesn't work at all - I've watched the video tutorial, but wehen I try and use it nothing happens - it appears to be the only part of Lightroom 5 that doesn't work.
How can I solve this problem?

    Keith,
This is what happens when I try and use the Spot Healing Brush:
I can select spots to heal/delete/duplicate - both single and multiple
After selection and hitting "done" nothing happens.
Consequently the spots I jhave tried to heral appear on the exported picture.
I would expect the Spot Healing Brush in Lightroom 5 to acxt the same as in Adobe Photshop Elements 10 - ie. you see the spot disapear, but for some reason it is not.
Hence the question, as I am wondering whether I'm doing something wrong-I've wateched the tutorial and it doesn't give me any clues as to whether I am doing anything wrong to erase/remove the spots.

  • Problem with Clone Stamp & Healing Brush

Once set the sample point by option clicking with either the clone stamp tool or the healing brush, I suddenly see a duplicate layer that moves with the cursor as I try to position it oveer the spot I want to fix.
I have tried resetting both tools.  I am running CS6 and have experienced no other problems.
    Any ideas what's wrong?

    Hi RedMo53,
Your seeing the clone source overlay and you can adjust the preferences for the clone overlay by going to Window>Clone Source.
You might try clipped and see how that works.

  • Spot healing brush tool problem

I am having a lot of problems with the spot healing brush tool.  I am getting asked to use the alt key to pick a spot.  It should not be doing that.  It acts as if I were using the clone stamp tool, which I do not want to use now.  Can anyone help me with this?  My software is Photoshop CC and is up to date.

Click and hold on the healing brish on the Toolbar.  You have the Healing brush selected, and you want the 'Spot healing brush'

  • Spot healing brush opaque

I've been using CS5 for a couple of weeks now, with no problem with the spot healing brush & content aware.  Now all of a sudden it is very opaque, and won't "erase" or remove anything....its just a faint gray smudge.  I must have changed some setting, but dont' know what I've done.  Any suggestions?

I did have a blend mode on the layer....tried going back to the background
layer, and that didn't work either....guess the blend mode was working there
too (I'm VERY new to photoshop)   I tried a new image, without any layers
and it worked fine, so I guess it won't work on layers that have blending
added, huh?  Thanks for your help!

  • Spot healing brush with content aware or proximity match?

I want to do the following:
    1. get rid of wrinkles, blemishes and dark circles under the eyes
What is the difference between using the content aware option and the proximity match option with the spot healing brush? Aren't they both blending surrounding pixels to get rid of the blemishes, wrinkles and dark circles?
    Thanks.

Proximity Match is how the Healing Brush works, it takes the surrounding pixels and blends them together with the underlying stuff. Content Aware on the other hand tries to recreate the texture based on the surrounding pixels so it doesn't blend with the pixels that you just painted over. Try both, see which one produces better results for you.

  • Spot healing brush alignment problem

Using Photoshop CS4 (11.0) on a Mac with 10.5.6. Sometimes the spot healing brush works as expected. However, after working for a while, the alignment seems to be off--I hover the cursor over the spot I want to retouch, but when I click the mouse the area retouched is a bit (1/4" or so) below the spot healing brush cursor. If I quite and restart Pshop the problem goes away. This is with the spot healing brush--not the one where you need to select where to clone from. Is something wrong, or is there a new feature I don't know about that's causing this? I've used the spot healing brush quite a bit with CS3.
If anyone has any thoughts, I'd appreciate hearing them. This is getting frustrating.

I think you are talking about a different issue here. This problem is not specific to the spot healing brush.
@ OP: The brush alignment problem is very real and I have it frequently when working with larger files (approximately >500MB in memory). I have two macs, a macbook (GMA X3100) and a mac pro (ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT). So two completely different hardware arrangements that have the exact same problem. This is clearly not a problem with graphics cards.
Drawing with any tool like: brush (any brush - dodge/burn, blur, eraser etc.), lasso (any lasso), line, crop tool etc. will result in a misalignment of about 0,5 cm directly downward. However, clicking on menus and dialogue boxes works as expected. Switching off OpenGL features in PS WILL NOT PREVENT THE PROBLEM (if I shout, maybe Adobe will hear...). The same problem appears whether I'm using a Wacom tablet or a mouse. It even appears when the Wacom driver is uninstalled.
So, if Adobe is not acknowledging the problem it's safe to assume it will be featured in CS5 as well.
@ Jim: Sorry, I would have posted in the other thread but your link does not work anymore.

  • Delays with Wacom Intuos pen and spot healing brush

This problem has been discussed a lot both on Adobe forums and elsewhere, in conjunction with previous versions of LR. This thread is typical: http://forums.adobe.com/message/5272942. The gist of the problem is that the Wacom pen tool (not limited to Intuos tablets, by the way) is almost unusable with the spot healing brush -- LR freezes for many seconds when you try to reposition the selected replacement patch. It eventually catches up, but the delay makes this feature extremely hard to use. There seem to be no similar delays doing the same function with a mouse or touch interface.
Wacom is aware of reports of problems, and went so far as to include a "use Windows ink" checkbox on their latest Intuos driver, with the suggestion that you uncheck it to avoid these delays. I've done that, installed the latest Wacom and graphics drivers, and tried every tip anybody has suggested, to no avail.
Of course, I don't know whether this is a Wacom problem or a Lightroom problem, but it's certainly a problem to use them together. I had hoped that LR 5.2 RC would have fixed it, due to some references in the announcement of fixes related to the spot healing brush, but it's still there, no change at all.
    Anybody have any ideas?
    Windows 8 64-bit
    Latest drivers for all devices

Well, here it is January 2014 and the problem is still around. I too, have tried everything I could find with no solution to the problem. Seems that Wacom is blaming Microsoft, which is probably where the blame belongs, but it seems that somewhere in Adobe, Wacom, and Microsoft someone could find a solution to this nagging problem. I took the statements by the Adobe people that once you tried a tablet you would neveragain be satisfied with a mouse as truth, but for now, I regret wasting my money on a tablet.

  • Spot Healing Brush sampling from unwanted region -- below the target area!

    Hello everyone,
I have some text in a speech bubble I'm trying to get rid of.  So far, I've filled the white characters with background color.  To smooth the character outlines and to blend the somewhat gradient color, I'm trying to use the Spot Healing Brush, but it is not doing the job at hand because it is acting like the standard Healing Brush, sampling from a different region even though I"m not ALT clicking first.
What am I missing here?  I'm really puzzled with the Spot Healing Brush misbehavior.
    Thanks!
    -Ron

Without seeing the image and brush behaviour we need to guess, plus we don't know what version of Photoshop you are using.
Take a look at the Options bar.  If you have 'Proximity Match' checked, tray changing it to Content aware.  Is Sample all layers checked, and could it be picking up information from an underlying layer?  Hmmm...  I'm getting too tired to think clearly (1am here) so that'll do for now.

  • Photo moves while using spot healing brush

I've been using the spot healing brush basically on every photo but recently when I go to use it and press Option to get a clone source and then click my mouse the photo will move everywhere the mouse moves and not allow for a touch up.
It doesn't matter if I'm clicking the mouse the whole time or not, it just happens when i click once while using the healing brush.
I've tried reseting work space reseting my computer everything and I'm just desperate right now to figure out how to fix it.
because my latest photo shoot is of a young girl covered in acne and the spot healing brush is the best when it comes to making it blend.
i've asked everyone i know who uses photoshop and they have no idea. I can't be the only person this has happened to.

I guess you meant the healing brush? (the clone overlay is not supposed to be active with the
    spot healing brush)
If your using cs4/cs5, check Clipped or Auto Hide in the clone source panel (Window>Clone Source) and see if that's better.

  • Spot healing brush vs. healing brush?

Does one of these tools generally result in better results than the other? Besides having to continue to sample with the spot healing brush, what is the difference?
    Thanks.

It all depends where you are correcting. if in the middle of a large area, the spot one might be faster. If you are sampling close to areas you do not want to be used as the source, select the healing brush.

  • Spot Healing Brush Content-Aware SLOW! on large files

I updated from Photoshop CC to CC 2014. When working with ultra large format scans (more than 3 Gigapixel) the Spot Healing Brush set on Content-Aware takes unusually long (5-7 seconds for retouching small dust spots). In Photoshop CC the same Content-Aware Spot Healing Brush actions were executed instantly without any perceived delays once I've pointed a source for the Clone Stamp tool (which I found weird but doing so really made the Spot Healing Brush faster on large files). On smaller images it's still very fast on CC 2014 but not on the 3.5 GPixel images I'm working on at the moment.
I know there have been some changes/improvements for the Content-Aware tools but in this case it's seriously hitting the performance. I haven't noticed any other slow-downs in processing performance with the update.
    I'm working on a dual-CPU (2 x 2.4 GHz 6-core) and 128 GB RAM Windows 8.1 machine. I've allowed Photoshop to use up to 120 GB RAM.
Is there any way to reset the Content-Aware Spot Healing Brush to work as fast as it had before the CC 2014 update?

My performance settings are the same for CC and CC 2014.
I assume the problem is introduced by the changes/improvements of the Content-Aware tools and on normal file sizes it might not matter for the user if the operation takes 25 or 200 ms. But on large files it seriously slows down the retouching work.
So far I've been doing as you suggested, using CC for that type of work. But as it takes about 90 minutes to save these huge files and AFAIK Photoshop CC and CC 2014 cannot be run as separate instances simultaneously it's quite inconvenient not being able to use CC 2014 for some other type of work while CC is saving the file.
If the new Content-Aware functions take that much more processing it would be great to have a choice (similar to the choice of the RAW-engine used in ACR). However, if the new Content-Aware functions are just not yet optimized for fast performance then it's a bug.
I will file a Feature Request/Bug Report and ask if there is anything that can be done about it in Photoshop CC 2014.
    Thanks for your help, Eugene.

  • Pen tool/path and content aware spot healing brush to remove cables (CS5)

Tried to remove some cables from an image using Russel Brown's video making use of the pen tool/path and the spot healing brush with content aware.  I'm pretty sure I followed his tutorial exactly but it did not work satisfactorily.  Are there any other tweaks I should be using to remove these cables and replace them with the background details?

    Yes to all.
Silkrooster  - Looks great!  However, I believe spot healing brush was the first I tried and got smudgy results, especially in area of the locks where there is a lot of detail behind the cables.  Found the patch tool works best, but not where there is a lot of detail behind the cables.
Fosse - Well, the bow of the ship going through the Panama Canal at 6 AM in the morning is a popular place, very crowded, and not one of them a photographer.  I was lucky enough to get the last spot which was dead center, but in front of the cables.  I tried to prevail on some people next to me to trade spots, but none were willing ($##$!!!&& b---ds) and they didn't even have cameras.  However, will keep your suggestion in mind about taking two shots for the next time...and will have to get up earlier.
I think if I want to really make this work, I will have to do a lot of work, probably using a combination of all these methods.
    Thanks to you all.
By the way, Re my question on screens without a reply button...when I click on a response, it appears without any reply button.  How do I get a screen showing the reply button without entering a new question, cancelling out of it, and then clicking on a response, which is the only way I found to get a screen showing the reply button.

  • PSE 9 crashes when I use the Spot Healing Brush tool

When I use the Spot Healing Brush tool PSE9 crashs completly. Is it a bug? In the older version 8 I had no problem.
I use WIN XP SP2, Intel Pentium 4, 3 Ghz, GPU: NVIDIA Geforce FX 5700, DirectX 9.0c 4.09.00.0904.
I tried it also on another PC with WIN7 and it caused the same problem.
    Thanks for any adivse

I know this post doesn't really help you guys, but I'm also using PSE9 on a Win7 Intel Quad Core Dell computer and the spot healing brush works fine. I only offer this post to indicate that it apparently is not a universal bug in PSE9. Perhaps an Adobe expert can jump in here and help. I can only offer that in Preferences I do have the RAM dialed up to 80%, but I don't think this is related to your problem.
