  • Graphics problems with MSI Twin Frozr II GTX460 768

    Hi,
My previous video card, a BFG 9800 GTX died, so I bought a GTX460 Twin Frozr II 768 and installed it a week ago.  (I also bought 2 more gb of RAM at the same time).  I'm now having several problems with the computer.  My DVD player is no longer recognized for some reason, maybe there's a conflict somewhere?  But the thing directly related to the video card is that whenever I enter a graphics-heavy game such as Dawn of War 2, it works for a few minutes, then everything freezes for about 5 seconds, after which there is massive graphics corruption.  Colors are often inverted to their negatives (blacks become white, for instance), writing is illegible and corrupted, etc.  One time after doing this the computer crashed with an error message stating the NV4 driver.dll had failed.  This happens nearly every time I try to play a game, but there are no apparent problems with web surfing, watching movies, or anything else.
I have searched the web and found many instances of this problem and I've tried many of the solutions, with no success:  I've reinstalled the latest drivers several times, doing clean installs each time.  I've used a Driver Cleaner, even tried doing a Windows System Restore.  I've gone in manually to see if there were duplicate NV4.dlls, which 1 place said is sometimes the problem, and there aren't.  I've run a registry cleaner and tune up program, which another person said fixed his problems, but it didn't help me.  I've even turned down the clock rate and speeds (underclocked from factory settings) the video card by a significant amount, and that didn't help.
Does anyone have any suggestions?  Do you think it's a hardware problem with the new video card?  If so, should I RMA it to the online retailer I bought it from or MSI directly?  I hate to lose use of my computer again while it is mailed to them and another card is mailed back, though.  I'm not even sure if the card is the problem...

I took your suggestion and removed the new RAM, and I just tested it.  I was able to play through 2 whole games of Dawn of War 2 and the error didn't happen, so it looks like you guys were right!

My old RAM is 2 sticks of 512 Corsair XMS2 gaming RAM, 800mhz, 5-5-5-12 latency.
My new RAM is a single 2gig stick of Kingston HyperX, 800mhz, 5-5-5-15 latency.
Mixing memory sticks is asking for troubles....No wonder that you have stability issues when you use both of them at the same time
However that's no VGA problem as already proofed.

  • MSI R6870 Twin Frozr II Random Crashes

    Hello,
I have had an MSI R6870 Twin Frozr II video card for the past year, and it has been operating without problems for most of that time. I have been slowly upgrading my computer over past 5 years, but keeping the same motherboard and CPU. A few months ago I started having issues with it:
While playing video games or browsing the internet the video drivers crash and recover after a few seconds at random times, approximately once every half an hour. 30% of the time, the card crashes and doesn't recover at all, with a black screen, prompting a restart of the system.
Last month I have rebuilt my PC: kept the same the video card, 750W power supply (both 1 year old) and all my hard drives. I reinstalled the same version of Windows 7. I made sure to take precautions against static in the process. However the problem persists.
Because I have my power button set to a restart, I am able to have the computer perform a soft reboot every time when the screen goes black, rather than forcing a hard reset, so to me this means the new CPU, Motherboard and RAM are working OK. Also on occasion switching my monitor cable between the two DVI outputs brings the image back.
Here are some of the other things I have tried so far unsuccessfully:
Updating the motherboard and bios drivers to the latest version
Using a tool to delete and reinstall latest ATI drivers (12.9)
    Using ATI beta drivers (12.11b)
Using both windows and 3rd party memory check tools (both came back OK)
Changing RAM settings from 1600 to 1333.
Underclocking the video card (although it runs pretty cold and I have a dedicated fan installed right underneath it).
I will welcome any other suggestions.
    Thank you in advance,

Here is an update on my situation:
I went out a bought a new PSU, Antec HCG-620M, but the problem didn't go away. I'm still trying to keep up with the latest drivers. However most games that require high performance (i.e. Witcher 2 out of the older, more stable games) remain unplayable due to fairly regular random video card crashes. Older games with lower specs play fine though. I have also been running SpeedFan in the background and have seen an occasional spikes in the video card's operating temperatures (as high as 81C) but crashes occur at any temperature.
    Help would still be appreciated.
    Thanks,

I've been running this card a couple months now and idle temps are always 60-63 and load temps are always 100-103.
These seem really high and I've grabbed the temperatures from various programs that all report the same thing. I have yet to try to reseat the card, etc, but that is my next step.
I've read that temps should be quite a bit lower than this and I'm worried about the longevity of my card.
Edit: Reseated card, no change; removed HS and re-applied thermal paste and still no change. Not really sure what to do now.

After all my searching on the internet for hours, I have never read this problem or this fix.
However, I re-did the thermal paste again to be safe, but then I used a different screw hole to mount it down. I think I might have been using the wrong one that wasn't in line with the card, which may have been causing slight warp, or enough that the heatsink wasn't dissipating the heat properly. Get perfect temperatures now. 60-70 depending on the game under load.
However, might want to mention this to people that try everything and never seem to figure it out.

  • MSI R6870 Twin Frozr II/OC annoyng artefacts

Hello. I've got a strange issue with my radeon 6870. Every time i play a game a small white flashes appears in random area of a screen. From 2-4 mm (Crysis, Bulletstorm and Fallout 3) to ~ 1-1,5 cm (Napoleon: Total War).I cant post a screenshot because it happens really fast  (just like someone hiding in a trees with a camera). In Crysis 2 and Bad Company 2  instead a small dots a large transparent nearly visible spots  appears from time to time.
    My spec
    AMD Phenom II X4 945  // Gigabyte 890GPA-UD3H rev 2.1  // MSI R6870 Twin Frozr II/OC (factory overclocked to 920MHz core)  // 2x2 Gb DDR3 1333 Samsung  // 500Gb SATA-III Western Digital WD5002AALX // 1 Tb SATA-II Hitachi HDS721010CLA332 // Thermaltake Toughpower 600 W // Pioneer optical drive // Coller Master CM690 II Advanced. Windows 7 Ulimate x64
All components are running at their stock speeds. Max GPU temperature i've ever seen ~78 celsius
I've tried overclock and downclock my VGA, fresh Windows install, 11.2, 11.3, 11.4 EP with no effect.
Maybe someone have got any ideas how to deal with that?
    Thanks in advance.

Building a new computer for my dad and was wanting to use just one vid card for 3 monitors, the system will be used for online stock trading where there will be a different application on each monitor and other use will be general stuff not much for gaming, this will be my first attempt with multiple monitors here are the main components, this computer will not be over clocked.

Here is an article that uses a 6870 card. Probably has the same output ports as yours.
They connected 3 monitors, all with DVI in connections.

No reason your connections shouldn't work the same.
You may have to get HDMI to VGA and/or DVI to VGA converters if your screens only have VGA in connectors.

  • Msi r6870 twin frozr ii (Blue screen to no screen)

Hello everyone, today i installed my msi r6870 twin frozr ii and right when my computer was downloading the driver it crashed to blue screen and now the computer will turn on at high speed but it wont slow down like usual start up and the screen wont show a signal. Anyone have an idea about what this is? Thank you so much for helping!

I cannot believe that re-installing the original / previous Video Card before the new HD6870 that you still get a Blank screen or " No Signal " message.
When you First Power Up the computer Don't you get a Start Up Screen where as you can press F4 or the " Key to get to BIOS " and then Reset things to DEFAULT.
The video card should be Identified as VGA compatible (no AMD Driver required ) by the Operating System itself.
The only other thing I can think of is somewheres a Major File got Corrupted. If you have a RESTORE disc that came with the computer please use it.
If you have an OS (guess you might be using Vista or Windows 7) OEM disc , use the REPAIR feature ... place the OS disc in the optical drive and let it Boot.
Do Not Reformat your Hard Drive as you will lose all your Data, including programs, pictures, etc: Unless you have an Backup or don't care as nothing is relevent/important and can be replaced.

i noticed that the heatsink easily twisted side to side VERY EASILY as i installed my r9650.
that made me wonder what holds it to the board..and if there is anything did it get tightened, and how tight, and what did they put under it.. ??
i use this.. supposed to be 4x better than silver.
    http://www.heatsinkfactory.com/ic-diamond-7-carat-thermal-compound-15-gram-p-16605.html
fixing it would probably void the warranty but it would at least run..mine freezes up on BC2.  i had a 512Mb nividia 8800 that ran BC2 just fine, the graphics weren't as good but it did run the game very well.
i always end up replacing the thermal paste. i repair computers, first thing i do on platforms is replace the hard plastic chewing gum on the heatsinks, that is often all it takes to get them running again. why would anyone put 2 cent paste on a $300 item.. turning it into a 2 cent item.. ??  ever hear about the weakest link story?

  • Any Reason Why Should I go with MSI Twin Frozr II 6870?

Do you guys have any reasons why should I go with MSI Twin Frozr II 6870 than other reference card??

MSi is only one of two mfg w/utils to control voltage on their 6870's the other is ASUS.  Price is a tad higher than some but the cooler is reference so its not like its a twin cooler or something like the 5xxx series or the 6850's custom design (not a twin cooler however).  If you dont plan on OC and tweaking voltage its probably not an issue then foor spec the 6870.  Id check out all, best price and warranty, some offer 3 yrs or lifetime.  When a custom cooler becomes avail on 6870's (only 6850's have them now last i checked), then id have more to comment on and suggest.

  • W510 problems with Nvidia driver recovery under Windows 7 (64 bit)?

Lenovo W510, Nvidia Qudardo FX 880M video, FHD:
What I'm seeing on occasion is a Windows 7 (64-bit) recovery, screen blanks out, goes 2-3 seconds, then recovers, things go back to normal, but a message displays saying that an error was detected in the video driver, and it has recovered. The new Firefox (4.0.1) seems to be one of the things that may be a contribution, hard to tell.  Per System Update at least, I'm current on the Lenovo downloads. SIW shows the driver level as 8.17.12.5738 (2010-06-27). Nvidia web-site shows their current driver level on the wen-site as 270.61 (2011-04-18), which is a considerably newer date at least. So two questions:
Has anyone else seen Driver/Recovery issues on Win 7 (64)
Has anyone directly run the Nvidia video drivers and had them run OK?
Seems like it would be nice for Lenovo to update their drivers, if indeed this is a driver issue, they appear back-level.

I used to have this problem with my W510 running Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit, especially Firefox 4 crashing the Nvidia display driver almost constantly. I googled and found that this is a known problem between older Nvidia driver and Firefox 4. Later on I downloaded the latest version of Nvidia driver from Lenovo website (it was not posted on the System Update server yet but was available on the regular download site). I clean-installed it (i.e., removing all files and settings created by the old driver) and I haven't experienced the problem since then.

  • MSI R6870 Twin Frozr II

I've just completed building a new system and am having issues with the MSI Twin Frozr II 6870. I'm getting the dreaded "display driver stopped responding and has recovered" error occasionally. It has occured while refreshing my Windows Experience Index, opening IE9, playing Diablo III, or opening up CCC.
I've done pretty much everything that I found from Googling, except rebuild my Windows 7 system from scratch, but before I do that I thought I'd make one last effort to find a different solution. I don't think I can RMA my card since I bought it overseas in May 2011.
Does anyone know of any issues with the R6870, the ASUS Crosshair V Formula, FX-4170 and Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate?

It's an Antec HCG-750 PSU, so that's not the problem.
I downloaded and installed the MSI driver suite, although it seems to be the same as AMD CCC.
Swapped it with the 4870 from my current PC, and the 6870 works fine on my older Phenom II X3 machine, but the 4870 now generates the same driver error in my new system.
So either it's a problem with the ASUS Crosshair V Formula, my Corsair Vengeance 8GB DDR3-1600, the AMD FX-4170, or the fact my Windows 64-bit Ultimate has been installed on an OCZ Agility 120GB SSD, but since the MSI product is not the cause, I'll go post questions elsewhere. Thanks for your help.

  • MSI - R6870 - Twin Frozr II - Is this too hot?

I think there is something wrong with this card of mine. I noticed that the idle temps were high. Way too high. I opened the case, latest ati 11.11 drivers, outdoor temperature of 20 degrees C, this card is idling around 62 degrees C. As demonstrated here:
If I force the fan to 80% it will drop down to about 55 degrees.
Is this card faulty? Seems unusually hot for something that's meant to be extra cool.

I use MSI AfterBurner program. You can preset the Fan.  I place mine on AUTO , other option is set to 50 percent fan speed which will also keep it within a good Temp. or User Control and Scale your temp settings.
. At 100 percent Load running for 30 minutes to 1 hour have yet seen my HD 6870 Twin Frozr II (OC) version hit 70c.  Usually at 60 -65c.  But if you ever get near 90c or above ... then problems are arising.
My pc system with the MSI cards don't like the AMD Catalyst Drivers or even those from MSI.  I have to play around finding which DRIVER from which Catalyst 10.XX or 11.XX performs the Best.
All I know is that AMD/ATI has left the HD68xx series in the dust as Has Been graphic cards and leave the customer the worries of finding a Driver that works.
I have CrossFire configuration but the DirectX 11 says my cards don't support DirectX 11.   Using one of the earlier Drivers, I will be able to use DirectX 11 but then I don't have CrossFire.
So go figure ....  1 Driver will work for one thing but not the other.  Beware that some will cause Artifacts or Green Screen or Screen Freezes (Locks Up) or even cause your Computer to Crash (get a error) and Dump.
AMD don't care about supporting the HD 68xx series.  Get a chance go with HD6950's or 6970's.   I'm tired of the ATI/AMD games. In May 2008 went with ATI HD 3870's and worked well until one fried in December 2010 for unknown reasons.
So I replaced them with HD6870's hoping for great Drivers. So disappointed now that it's been a year. My next PC rig going back to nVidia.!!!!  Sure nVidia cards get hotter (power hogs) but they're more reliable and lasted longer than the AMD/ATI cards.   No wonder nVidia is #1 --- 99 percent of the time. Well we do need AMD competition to keep nVidia prices down.
    my rig:
Thermaltake Armor Plus full tower, Gigabyte GA-X48T-DQ6 mobo,  Intel e-8500 3.16GHz CPU, OCZ PC3-2000 (1600) 2x2GB memory, Zalman ZM850 850watt power supply, Zalman CPS-9500 CPU cooler, and MSI HD6870 Twin Frozr II (OC) in Crossfire ... replaced the old Sapphire Toxic HD3870's. Use Dual Boot OS's Vista Ultimate 64 bit and Windows 7 64 bit.

  • MSI R6870 twin frozr ii problems

Hello, this card worked fine for me till about 2 weeks after usage, when I game, tiny squares start appearing all over the screen and it hangs there until a notification says '' amd driver stopped responding and has recovered''. Sometimes it just goes black after the freeze and I have to force restart.
    i5-760 2.80ghz quad, 8gb ddr3, 1tb hd, dx 11, catalyst version 10.12, 650w psu
driver version for gfx driver is   8.820.2.0 according to the Intel driver update utility.

    1. Tried it on league of legends. Played fine for two weeks and now when i play, the tiny squares appear and freeze with the TDR message. Tried on WoW and screen just blacked out after awhile ingame.
    2. Sorry i got the psu wrong, its 620W instead of 650W. Seasonic M12II-620Bronze at +12V max load 48A combined load 576W total output 620W
    3. Havent done a proper load test, but right after it crashed from a game, the card was at 58deg.
    4. I have tried reformatting, as well as reinstalling. I have tried catalyst 10.10 to 11.1 beta and they all crashed too.
    5. Im just short of bringing the card down to the shop though, I dont have an extra machine.
    thanks!

done a clean install of 260.99 twice, and a clean install of 266.58 once (meaning shutting off auto driver download in win7 and running driver sweeper from safe mode)
reinstalled windows on a clean format, once.
tried placing the SLI bridge in both spots (one at a time of course)
everything works fine with SLI disabled, save the fact that i have a 220 dollar paperweight sitting in my case.
    any help would be appreciated.
now since then, i have been looking around in afterburner. im no OC'er and i dont know voltages from jack squat, but there is a difference in the voltages. while both sit a .875 at idle, under load, one card volts up to .987 and the other only volts up to .912. this is specific to the cards, as switching their places yields the same voltage result per card.
so my question now is: what is the default load voltage for these cards?
is one of them over volted or under volted? have they both voltages been messed with? or is this simply a normal variance in voltages per manufactured cards?
could this causing my current problems?

Which one exactly VGA's model you have?
Have you tested with each one alone?

    It's vary per each unit.

  • Problem with 4250dtn printing multiple copies Windows 7 64 bit

We can't print multiple copies from within some, but not all, applications to a Laserjet 4250dtn from Windows 7 64-bit workstaitons.  Windows 7 32-bit ones work fine.  The printer is served from a Server 2003 printer queue, but even when we print direclty to the port we only get one copy. Setting copy count from the printer dialog works fine, but we need to have the applications invoke multiple copies. We are using the UPD 64-bit driver;  could not find a legacy driver for this printer for Win 7 64 bit. I've tried various tricks found elsewhere on this forum, including turning off mopier mode, printing directly to the printer, disabling advanced features, etc. to no avail. Help, anyone! Thanks. Jerry TurnbowUSBO

Thanks very much for the feedback. I was getting worried!
The command window opens when I double-click on the Developer Day VM and I get a few lines that scroll off the window about loading Linux .... These lines never come back and I can't scroll in the command window.
As soon as the above messages come into the command window the whole process stops. The window stays open but I get no response from it. I get no login prompt or anything.
Do you think it could be a VirtualBox setup issue? I downloaded and installed the product along with the extension pack with no apparent problems and when I start VirtualBox I see the Developer Day VM listed in the left panel. All I do at that point is double-click it like the download web site said but I don't get the same results, i.e. no chance to login. It seems all I can do at that point is close the window by clicking the 'X' and it asks me 3 things about what to do with the VM and I usually say to shut it down. None of the other options look any better either.
Any other suggestions are most welcome!!
    Thanks again!
