Problem with reinstall Leopard or Snow Leopard on MacBook Pro

I want to reinstall my MacBook Pro. I tried with Leopard Install DVD but didn't work. Reset PRAM, didn't work, still grey screen...I have Snow Leopard upgrade DVD I can read, I was able to erase but when trying to install I got message it can't complete the operation...Help!

you could try booting from the backup (if the Safe Boot doesn't work), inserting the Leopard DVD and selecting the MacBook Pro as the destination.
The backup is a TM volume.
Marie: have a look at this for step by step instructions to erase and reformat.

The slowness may sometimes be the result of a failing drive. That first needs to be determined.
Does the Snow DVD look like this?

  • Problems with Photoshop CS4 on Snow Leopard 10.6.8

I just upgraded to Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and now my Photoshop CS4 is constantly crashing on me.  Adobe was no help.  Is there anything I can do to fix this?  I don't want to purchase CS5 just to prevent this from happening. I had no problems with CS4 w 10.5.8.  I also did a software update on CS4.  Help please!!

    "...Adobe was no help...."
Meaning what exactly? CS4 should work with some problems. Google, "cs4 and snow leopard" and read the issues. You are also not alone if you look the the right side of this web page under, "More Like This" you'll others with the same issue.

  • Problem with discdrive and installing snow leopard

Frustration and desperation has settled in! Lets see if i can get some good help from fellow Apple users!
    Ok this is the problem:
A few days ago my computer started to crash almost all programs on my MacBook. I would try to get get into Safari for example and it would SLOWLY start up and then after a few seconds into the prgram it give me the error message "This application Safari quit unexpectedly. Mac OS X and other applications are NOT affected. Click to reopen..." Well again it does that with almost all my programs!
So i took it to the Genius Bar in Munich Germany! (im currently here for business) There the representative of apple actually took my MacBook to the back, checked it for any HD damage and looked at it "under the hub", however couldnt find anything wrong with it physically. So he suggested to backup my HD just reinstall Mac OS X again. I asked him for the new Snow Leopard since i didnt have my startup CD there!
Well im at home now and trying to install the System. However everytime i put the CD in it TRIES to start it up (up to 3 times) and then ejects it. Sometimes even it DOES load it up but then it would tell me to install the new system i would have to restart the computer and when i do that the same problem (3 upstart attempts then ejection) happens!!
Now can anyone tell me why this is happening?! On a side note i also tried insert another DVD and CD and BOTH work just fine! I had a similar problem with a previous DVD b4 but the problem was irratic.. meaning sometimes it worked sometimes it doesnt! Any suggestions or do i need a new Discdrive?!

If your MacBook is under warranty have them check the DVD drive. They replaced my DVD drive because it was doing the same thing. Try the following and see if it helps.

It may not have been considered a "Major Release," But when the it's the only OS that the machines you are currently building will run, it's pretty freakin' major!
(I'm not sure if Apple's latest machines will still run 10.5, or not, but from following this thread, I'm guessing not?)
It is the standard at Apple... the latest build of the current OS is what goes on the new machines, and the Motherboards, Chipsets, & BIOS (not the right term for it with Mac, I know) are "hard written" to accept that OS as the absolute minimum, and nothing older (or lower as some call it).
So, since the latest machines are coming preloaded with Snow Leopard (10.6.2) that, and subsequent newer builds of OS 10.6 and up is all they can be loaded with.
This is nothing new. It's industry wide in both Mac and PC. Just try to put XP on a brand new Dell, HP, or Gateway PC. Without flashing the BIOS and taking a "more likely than not" chance of rendering most of your hardware undetectable, it just ain't gonna happen.
Conversely, just as Snow Leopard won't run on a PPC powered Mac, Vista and 7 may install, or appear to, on a single core, older PC, but the first time you install and try to open anything other than the OS itself, you're in for a world of problems.
People have tried to fight this for years. In 2005 Mac users went out of their minds when Apple dropped support for OS 9. A year later, it was Windows 98 users freaking out over their beloved OS being "sunsetted". I was skeptical of the move to Intel processors when I first heard about it, having become a full time Mac user, and being partial to AMD before that. But like Motorola PPC processors, AMDs run hot and heat is the enemy. The new machines run faster, cooler, and do more for less money.
It's a major pain for people who don't have the budget for a new Mac (or PC) and still have old software that is perfectly functional, but they are finding more and more incompatibility as they interact with other people and newer systems. Sooner or later though, technology wins and everyone has to either upgrade or drop out.  Fighting it is futile.  I will always remember the day last Summer when I stopped at a traffic light and next to me was an older, redneck looking fellow in a new brand spanking new Honda Accord. It may have even been a hybrid, I don't know, but duct taped on his dash was what had to be a thirty-five year-old 8-track player with a bunch of wires coming out of the back, also taped to the dash, and running to a pair of 6 x 9 speakers, which were just laying on the dash (no duct tape). I had to wonder why he bothered to buy the latest in automotive technology and yet he was stuck in a time warp for his stereo. Don't Hondas come with some pretty decent CD stereo units? And where can you find 8 track tapes anymore?

  • Problem with Time Machine, running Snow Leopard

    Hi all,
Last week I had a new hard drive fitted into my iMac 8,1, after which Snow Leopard was reloaded (10.6.3 from the disc, updated to 10.6.8), followed by the restoration of data via Time Machine from my external hard drive. Whilst my Mac is now running beautifully, I am having problems backing up with Time Machine.
When I run a backup, it prepares about 100,000 items, then starts to backup, usually about 650mb. It crawls along in kb until it gets to about 1mb, then jumps quickly to the end, but then it adds extra mb on the end. Then it suddenly starts again "preparing x items....." and off it goes again.
I have tried repairing the backup disc, and it appears to be ok. I even erased it and started again. Time Machine did a full backup (139gb) in about 2 hours, then immediately added another 640mb at the end - strange, but I do at least have a full backup from yesterday. But now, everytime I run backup, it looks for the same sort of figure (650-700mb) and then goes round in circles.
Any help would be very much appreciated!
    Thanks, David

    Hi Eric
Thank you for your reply.  Here are the screenshots for each change:
Having prepared about 95,000 items, the backup of 612mb begins
14 minutes later a message appears
Another 3 minutes and another message. You will see from this screenshot that the backup figure has changed to 613.1mb
Another 30 seconds and it all begins again....
And finally, 7 more minutes pass, another 96,000 items are prepared, and another 604.8mb backup begins.
I might add, that between posting this morning, and your reply, I also went into disk utility, chose the top leve of the external drive, clicked on the partition tab, charged current to 1 partition, renamed the drive, erased it, and did a full back up of 139GB. After 137GB it started again, looked for 602mb, backed them up and finished the backup, which is why TM states that the last back up was at 18:16 today.
    Thanks again
    David

  • Problems with Booting from the Snow Leopard Install Disc

I need to do a reformat of my iMac drive and reinsall Snow Leopard.  Then I want to run System Migration and move the contents of my Mac Pro (running Snow Leopard) over to the iMac.
I placed the retail Snow Leopard installation disc and held the "C" key down during restart.  My optical drive make a bit of random noise and eventually ejects the SL disc.  I've tried a CD, movie dvd and another software program installation disc and none of them seem to be able to be read.  I've sold the Mac Pro and am in a bit of a bind as I need to get this done and shipped out.  I'm also going to have to wipe the Mac Pro drives clean and do a reinstall of Snow Leopard.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks,
    John

Do you have the original install discs that came with the computer?
If you do, try powering up the mac pushing in the disc and hold the OPTION key, which will bring up the start up manager, select the insrall disc to boot from.
After booting, select the language, on the next page go to the menu bar and select Utilities/disk utilities, select your volume (default name is Macintosh HD, or what ever you ma have named it) First aid tab, run verify disk.
If it comes up with errors (they will be in red font) click repair disk. Rerun this till it it comes up with "this disk seems OK i(n green font)
Then quit the installer and eject the disk.
Try the Snow Leopard disk using the same proceedure (power up, push in disk, holding the OPTION key) to boot to the start up manager, and select the SL disk, and do a clean install.
Make sure that you have a retail install disk (white SL on it)
You can try this from the retail SL disc, if you do not have the Original disc(s) you should include all of them to the person you seel/give it to.
    After install, follow these instructions.

  • Problems with iPhone detection after Snow Leopard upgrade

    Hi all,
Have been experiencing a rather strange issue ever since I had upgraded from Leopard 10.5.7 to Snow Leopard via the upgrade disc. My Macbook ceases to detect my connected iPhone in both iTunes and the XCode Organiser. I have to re-install iTunes each time the Macbook is loaded up for the detection issues to be fixed.
Some of my friends who had upgraded from Leopard (rather than doing a clean install) had also experienced similar issues. Wonder if there is a fix to this?
    Thanks in advance.

You might need to remove and reinstall the Apple Mobile Device Service. Check out this article:

  • Internet problem with New Airport Extreme base and new Macbook Pro

So I bought a Airport Extreme base station with my new Macbook pro.
My desktop system uses a DSL modem which is connected to my computer via an ethernet cable. It works flawless. I can also unhook the hard ethernet connection from the desktop and connect it to the Macbook Pro with no problems.
I then connected the ethernet cable from the DSL router to the WAN port on the Airport Base.
I have no problem gettiing the Macbook pro to set itself up on the Airport Network. I can NOT, though, access the internet. I even tried to type in the IP address for the DSL modem while connected to Airport base and can not connect to modem. Does anyone have any advice? Is there a bridging function in the Airport Base that has to be activated?
Another question. If I replace my current DSL Router with a wireless router, do I even need the airport base if all I want to do it connect to the internet with the laptop?
    Thanks,
    Danny

Make sure you perform a complete power recycle when switching network components.
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling
    - Power-off the DSL modem & AEBS. (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
    - Power-on the DSL modem; Wait at least 30 minutes.
    - Power-on the AEBS; Wait at least 5 minutes.
If that doesn't resolve the problem, and your DSL ISP requires PPPoE for connectivity, you will need to set that up on your AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) as follows:
Connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the LAN port of the AEBS, and then, using the AirPort Admin Utility, check these settings:
    Internet tab
    - Connect Using: PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE)
    - Account Name: <ISP account name>
    - Change password: <ISP password>
    - Always stay connected (checked)
    - WAN Ethernet Port: Automatic
Another question. If I replace my current DSL Router with a wireless router, do I even need the airport base if all I want to do it connect to the internet with the laptop?
No, the AEBS will no longer be required.

  • I set up a new router and the windows machines have no problem with connectivity.  I go through the MacBook Pro's airport assistant and view my network and then enter the WPA2 password.  I get back a message saying the password is incorrect when it is

I set up a new router and the windows machines connect fine.  My MacBook Pro does not.  I go through the airport assistant and see the network yet when I enter the router WPA password I get a message back saying that the password is incorrect.  And, it isn't!  Very frustrating.  What can I do as I had the same problem after I tried to reinstall my last router.  Again, only on the Mac.  Thanks!

If you kept the same Base Station name and network name, that can confuse Keychain Access. Either change the Base Station and network name, or open Keychain Access Utility and delete any reference to your Base Station and network name. Make sure you delete from the Login and System keychains.

  • Problems with Distortion in 30" Screen and new MacBook Pro 2.6 MHz

I've got problems with distortion and shadows with this MacBook Pro model (the new 2.6 MHz Intel Core 2 Duo w/ 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM memory) on my Apple 30". The older MacBook Pro(s) work and look fine on this monitor (Apple 30"). Just bought the new machine last week and the monitor is about 1-1/2 years old. This one has the 200 GB Hitachi drive.
Any ideas where the distortion is coming from? This machine has the 8600M GT w/ 512 MB Ram. Looks great until you plug into the Apple 30". Lower resolution does not help.

What does the distortion look like? Pictures would be helpful.
