Problem with Santa Rosa MBP-Unable to Boot

I have a Santa Rosa MBP with the maximum of 4GB of memory.
About 4 months ago I was unable to boot it because there was no video at all. The Genius Bar stated it was a problem with the video in the hardware and kept it for about a week to install a new Logic Board.
I got it back but within a couple days began having new problems. The Wi-Fi would connect but there was no internet on safari, mail, etc. i went to the Apple store again and the Genius Bar was unable to fix it and said it was a problem deep inside the OS. What I did since I had already bought Snow Leopard I did an upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard and it solved the problem.
It has worked well the last 3 months or so when my MBP started slowing down. It would sometimes take 10 minutes just to get from the login screen after typing in my password to my desktop where I can use it. Programs would open slow, close slow. My dashboard opens but I can't do anything with it. It has only gotten worse with time and now the computer won't even boot. It gets to the grey Apple with the progress indicator and stays there with the fan running but never goes further.
Fortunately I had done a mirrored backup from Super Duper. I had begun to think it was a hard drive problem. I tried booting from this backup that was made before the problem got very bad and it also runs the same way. I then took this backup to another MBP I have and it worked perfectly. I don't think it's a hard drive problem now. I then thought it may be a memory problem. I used the DVD that came with the MBP to do a hardware test which passed.
I think I have no choice but to go back to the Genius Bar. The problem is with purchasing the additional AppleCare my AppleCare just expired about 3 weeks ago. Yet I know this logic board was put in around 4 months ago and if I'm correct when something like that is done it's often a refurbished board, not new. Either way I had the issue with Wi-Fi just after the replacement and I went back to Apple for it. I think it was related and now this problem. I don't want to have to buy a new MBP but yet I'm convinced all these problems started with the logic board replacement.
Do any of you have other ideas of what the problem could be? Is it possible something I could fix? I have tried a PRAM reset with no luck. Would Apple cover something like this?
Thank you for your help.

  • Santa Rosa MBP Application Crashes with EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001)

I am having Application crashing problems with my brand new Santa Rosa MBP that arrived today. This machine is a 2.4 GHz 17" MBP with Hi-Res Glossy display and it came with 2 GB of RAM. I upgraded it to 4 GB but this problem occurs with the original chips or the new 2 x 2 GB chips.
So far the applications that crash are Pages, Keynote, Aperture, Parallels Desktop, and iWeb. Other things I have tried are all right for now. Excerpts from the CrashReporter log of Aperture are below. All applications are crashing with an identical EXCBADACCESS (0x0001) and KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE (0x0002) at ... (this number differs for individual applications). Any ideas?

I am also having this problem with Adobe Bridge CS3, and QuickTime but only if I try to open a video file. It seems to be a problem when I access anything that wants to deal with the video hardware in the machine. I am planning on calling Apple tomorrow but any help would be appreciated.

Help!!! Brand new MBP with Santa Rosa Kernel Panics when started with external HD firewire 800 after 20 sec...
I don't know what it could be???
    Do you???
    Thanx

I'm actually having a similar issue and I don't think its related to networking at all.
I'm currently working in a corporate environment where we deploy pre-built OS X images to machines. I recently upgraded my images to 10.4.10 before we got our first Santa Rosa machine. This image was built on a MacPro and worked on all Intel Macs down to a MacMini CoreSolo. When I deployed my prebuilt image to the SR MBP, it caused a kernel panic immediately.
Further investigation revealed previous builds of OS X, including 10.4.10 upgraded from any other model Intel Mac will kernel panic the SR MBP. Going backwards the SR Build of OSX will not work on any previous model Mac, as any other build typically does, but causes severe graphical distortion, as if it does not have the display drivers for the other Macs.
To make a long story short, I think your issue comes from the fact that your external hard drive has an older build of OS X 10.4 than the SR MBP will run (even though you may have upgraded it to 10.4.10). Anyone who can corroborate my story with some more testing, please chime in.
I haven't found a solution for this issue yet other than keeping a seperate Santa Rosa Core 2 Duo image for my deployments.

  • MacBook Pro - with Santa Rosa - Kernel Panics

The local Apple store has replaced my new Santa Rosa MacBook Pro once already and when I received the machine, I did a brand new install and then transferred my files over. They told me that if I still get Kernel Panics on this second machine to go ahead and do an Archive and Install or Full Install option.
Until Time Machine is out, what is the best backup method for keeping all files and settings if you want to do a complete new install and format?
Does anyone think a brand new install will fix this? Also, this machine is getting a lot less KP's than the previous Santa Rosa MBP got. Any ideas why?
Here is my panic.log below. Does anyone have any ideas what this Unresolved Kernel Panic Means?

I tried WPA, WPA2, WEP. TKIP, AES. 802.11b, 802.11g and 802.11n... with the same issue -> Kernel Panic...
I have no answer from my Apple resellers in France. Alone in the dark :'-(
BUT everything goes well since I stop using the '$' in the pre-shared key and the SSID. I haven't experience any new KP since 03/06 with a intensive Airport use... I hop this can help you.

  • Santa Rosa MBP - DVI to VGA Projector problems

When hooking up a Sharp PG M20X using a [DVI toVGA cable] and a [VGA to DVI adaptor] the MBP sees the projector, but the projector cannot see the computer.
This is a problem because, I may find myself in situations where this is the only configuration for hooking my MBP up to a projector.
    Note:
    1. A G4 Powerbook works fine with this configuration.
    2. The MacBook Pro drives the Sharp PG M20X projector DVI to DVI - without problems
    3. The MacBook Pro drives a DVI to VGA CRT monitor - using a [VGA to DVI adaptor] - without problems.
    Is there a solution?
    Thanks
    I have a 2.4 GHz Santa Rosa C2D MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   Sharp PG M20X Projector (DVI-input)

I think I solved this problem.
It was in issue for me. My second monitor would only display the Windows XP screen when it was loading, then it would black out. I couldn't even move my mouse arrow to the other side. Then I fixed it, here's how (running Windows XP SP3):
    1. Start > Control Panel > Appearance and Themes
    2. Display
    3. Go to tab "settings"
    4. Double click the blue image with the "2" inside it. This is the second monitor, adjacent to your first, or primary, monitor. The blue box may be a desaturated, greyish blue, meaning that the monitor is disabled. Click it and it a box will pop up asking if you want to enable the monitor. Click OK, and then like magic, your monitor is resurected in it's Windows Glory! From there, adjust the resolution, and it should work perfectly.
This isn't a Boot Camp compatability issue, it's just a problem with the lack of familiarity that users of OS X have with using XP.
    Have a nice day!

  • Problems with Late 2011 MBP (catalog corrupt, won't boot from USB/CD)

    Hello,
I have had some problems with my Late 2011 MBP running OSX 10.8.x (latest update)
I was using Safari when suddenly my screen froze. It has happened a couple of times before but it usually is either: 1.) a black screen for 5 seconds while nothing works responds and then it continues work like nothing happened, or 2.) just a freeze for a moment which goes away within a few seconds. I have visited the official service and they found nothing wrong with my laptop and said that it may have been just random occurrence. This time it froze and as I waited the fans went crazy and had no other option but to shut down from the power button. Later, when I wanted to boot up, it gets to the Apple logo, the circle spins and the small bar below appears and after a second or two, it disappears and then the computer shuts down. I went to recovery mode and used disk utility to verify and repair the problem (which only works to find out the problem, not to fix it, thanks anyway apple) Heres what it showed:

Volume repair complete.Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.Error: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.
I tried to boot DiskWarrior from a USB and a CD, after pushing enter in the bootable device's screen, I get a continuous loop of 3 beeps and I can't boot from either of the mediums.
I also tried the Single-user mode (Command-s when booting) and the /sbin/fsck -fy said that my HD is not completely verifiable. Also, 3/4 of the files mentioned in disk utility are also mentioned in this process, with errors as forrows: keys out of order, invalid index key, invalid extent entries (7 times), incorrect block counts, number of links and incorrect sizes for the foretold files and invalid catalog record type.
The reason why I'm not doing a clean install is that the last few days I've been in the process of deleting unnecessary items on my laptop so I could make a back-up (as for some reason, Time Machine is awfully slow and a new 600 gb backup would take and enormous amount of time, but that's a problem for another day) and as I had not yet reached the backing up part, my data is locked on this (possibly) corrupt HD. How should I advance and what steps should I take?
My first and most important mission would be to get back into my OS to make a back-up. Then I'd deal with the "not being able to boot form USB nor CD" and the TM problem.
    Thank you all in advance,
    Martin

Before you even start, consider that there may be no Windows 7 driver support for some of the hardware in your laptop. You won't know which hardware devices and functions are unsupported until you find out the hard way. In some cases, a driver conflict could cripple your computer.
Like most OEMS, Toshiba pre-installs Windows 8 to boot with EFI on a GPT hard drive. Your Windows 7 install disc, on the other hand, most likely boots with a BIOS from an MBR. Therefore, your Windows 7 disc will not boot your computer.
You would need to start by performing a low-level format of your hard drive. This completely erases the disc and its metadata. Then you could boot from your Windows installation disc and try to install Windows 7. How successful you will be depends on driver support.
All things considered, you should stay with Windows 8. Next time, more research before you buy.

  • Santa Rosa MBP, Kernel Panics fixed by 10.4.10 Update v1.1

A friend of mine who has the new 2.4GHz MBP just ran the 10.4.10 v1.1, and he no longer has KPs. Has anyone else tried this with their SR MBPs?
I just got my 7th machine last night. I noticed that Apple has made the AC adapter smaller (similar to PB's). Who knows, maybe they changed something from the first release? Anyways, I tested it on battery, and within about 15 min, a KP while surfing the net! I will give the v1.1 a try when I get home tonight. will report back.
SR MBP owners, pls let me know if there's any fix out there that I am not be aware of. Thank you!

I run mine on battery all the time. Out on the deck, airports, hotspots, office buildings, hotels. Never had an issue with KP's.
I purchased mine through PowerMax on a trade-in deal for my old Core Duo model. They are located in Oregon I believe.
Something very wrong with being on 7. This is my 3rd one and only because I voluntarily keep upgrading them. Had a 15" Core Duo traded up for a 17" Core Duo and now a 17" Santa Rosa. Never had a single problem with any of them.
Apple certainly isn't problem free, the same as any other manufacturer isn't.
But honestly..if your on #7 I would have to start thinking that the problem is something other than the MBP. Some software...configuration...combination of hardware....something. I mean you would pretty much have to be the worlds unluckiest person I would think to have 7 bad ones.
Honestly, I really do mean no offense, but you might want to start looking at other factors. Are you using 3rd party RAM in it? Have you tried other routers? Or just one you have at home? What security protocols are you using? What software have you loaded from the default configuration.
I guess anything is possible, but statistically it would seem improbable that 7 of them could be suffering from the same problem.

  • 10.5.2 and santa rosa mbp cinema display issue

not only did the update hang... It took disconnecting everything and reseting the pram just to get it past the initial white screen.. once it booted the display on the mbp flickered like 7 times seemingly adjusting it's color profile over and over. I plugged in my 30 inch and it appeared to be working fine.. but then i noticed that the brightness of the display on the santa rosa wasn't responding at all.. and neither were the keyboard keys that usually control the brightness of the cinema display.
So I decided to reboot.. well. what do you know, won't reboot again unless I unplug not only the cinema display, but the firewire and usb extensions that go with it, and my fire800 external... I'm not sure which it is as I'm not going to test it risking anything.. it's something though.. it seems like a power issue... and I'm worried it could get worse.. if i don't restart and unplug everything the fans speed up all the way and it just sits..
I am not going to reboot for a while now.. hopefully until there is a solution.. help?
and not to mention I was hoping for a fix with 10.5.2.. try calibrating your color in expert mode.. there's not even a button on the right slider.. I was told that this in their database, and escalated by two separate geniuses.. over 2 months ago..

    not any ideas?

  • Brand-new Santa Rosa MBP, Kernel Panics related to Airport

Brand new MBP (2.4GHz 15"), anytime I do anything online I get a kernel panic. I am connecting to a WPA-2 network that is supporting stable connections to several other computers, including another (albeit older) MBP. I have no third-party sw installed, I have no peripherals attached, I have installed all available updates, I have run disk verify/repair and permission repair via the install disk and the problem persists. I have also physically inspected the RAM modules to make sure they're situated properly.
The console log shows mbuf failures (I can only access the log if I have the airport off) that are similar to the problem Apple identified in 10.4.8 but were supposedly solved w/ 10.4.9 (see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?
    artnum=303712).
So two questions: anyone else out there experiencing this on a WPA-2 or other network? If so, any fixes that don't involve me having to return this computer to Apple? If this is a QA issue that could have been prevented through better testing prior to release...

    Hey Don (and others)
I bought a new Santa Rosa MPB yesterday and am suffering the same issues. My office uses WPA (not sure about the specifics) and within the first hour of ownership (of my FIRST Apple machine ever) I suffered kernel panics.
I get back to my workplace from the local Apple Store, get all set up and online. I run all the software updates fine. Next, I shut the lid and proudly carry my new Mac to a meeting. Open the lid and notice I can't get online. I stop and start the wireless and immediately get a kernel panic.
    Restart, and it happens again.
Restart, and I can get online finally. With the help of some coworkers I get to the panic.log file and notice the panic happens around the Airport.

Overall, a bit frustrated (especially since after craving a MBP for months and holding out for the new models, to have these issues).
    Oh, I also have a 2.4ghz 15"

  • What is a Santa Rosa MBP?

Sorry for my ignorance, but I just bought a MBP 17" 2.4Ghz with 4GB RAM and 7200RPM HD and I've read a lot about the "Santa Rosa" and I'm lost. What is it? and how can you tell? Thanks

It's the most recent incarnation of the MBP line that is using a different chipset than previous models. This chipset is nick-named 'Santa Rosa' by Intel. Hence the new MBPs are called the Santa Rosa models. They can be easily identified by their CPU speeds - 2.2 and 2.4 GHz.
If you open System Profiler you will also see that the Machine ID is 3,1 to identify the first of the Santa Rosa models.

    DSL

I previously had this problem on two 15" MBPs and fixed it on both by downing the following:
    1.) Install 10.4.6 update
2.) Delete system keychain entry and any login keychain entries for the wireless network
3.) Go back to System Preferences -> Network and re-enter the login and password for the network.
Since then they have both reconnected to the network automatically with no problem. Before that I had the same symptoms you describe.
Thanks for replying. The issue that I have to go
through with my 15" is that whenever it sleeps or I
reboot I have to turn off Airport, turn it back on,
find my wireless network and reconnect. The guy I
talked to at the Apple store told me that was normal,
but I have never had to do that with other laptops I
have owned nor do I need to do that when I boot into
XP using boot camp. <shrug> Just wondered if that was
common to all MBP's, just the 15 or just mine hehe.

  • Strange Boot problem with iMac OSX 10.7.5 (Boot loop, not working safe boot etc.)

    Hey guys,
I've got a strange problem with my iMac Late 2009. This morning it didn't want to boot (grey screen with turning wheel). Yesterday when I shut it down everything was fine. Last backup was finished three minutes before. So I was a bit shirty but noch scared of any data loss.
    I tried  the following things:
    1. boot recovery and check hdd (it's a new one, only second day back from apple store for replacing seagate hdd), everythings fine
    2. try to boot in safe mode, did not work!
    3. try to boot in verbose mode, did work until it stopped. Screenshot of the last lines of log is within this post
    4. I used my TM backup and afterwards I could boot! Strange, because as I sad the backup finished a few minutes beforce I left my mac and shut it down
Now I'm a bit scared of shutting it down again But what would be the next step to find the error? My first thought were some third party kernel extensions, but that would not affect a safe mode boot, am I right? I have a Macbook Air here which is setup nearly identical to my mac and it's working. Could it be a hardware fault? Maybe you've got an idea.
    Thanks!
    Max

at the moment it seems to be a corrupted time machine backup from my old hard drive (new one has a runtime of 27 hours). So I'll will try a clean install of my system at least, when I got the time. sh%&$ !

  • Are FW800 and FW400 Ports On Separate Buses...On Santa Rosa MBP?

    Hi Folks,
I have yet to get a definitive answer from Apple Support, Apple store techs, the Web, searching these forums, etc. on this question:
On the latest MacBook Pro (Santa Rosa), are the Firewire 800 and Firewire 400 ports on separate buses? In other words, if I have an external FW400 drive (or other FW400 device such as an audio interface) running on the FW400 port, and an external FW800 drive running on the FW800 port, will the 800 run at 800 speeds or 400 speeds?
Here are the answers I've received thus far:
Apple Support: "Yes...they 'should' be on separate buses", "The techs say the 800 'should' run at 800", "You should call an Apple store"
Apple Store #1: "They ARE on separate buses"
Apple Store #2: "They ARE NOT on separate buses"
The Web: I've not found one source that supports that they ARE on separate buses. Every post I've read in this and other forums suggest that they share the same bus and that the FW800 port will degrade in this situation.
Does anyone have the definitive answer on this? Any real-world experience?
    Thank you so much.
    Rich

    Ignore the previous poster.
Here is all you need to know...
There is ONE FireWire bus. It supports up to 800 MB/sec.
*You cannot use both the FW800 and FW400 ports at the same time! You can't!*
If you for example plug in a FireWire 800 hard drive into your FireWire 800 port, and a video camera into the FireWire 400 port, then capturing video in Final Cut Pro simply *WILL NOT WORK.*
    So, what is the solution?
One solution is to plug the video camera into the hard drive, assuming it has a FW 400 port on it. This will daisy-chain the video camera through the FW 800 hard drive.
Another solution is to buy a FireWire ExpressCard for your 34mm ExpressCard slot. I got one with two FireWire 400 ports at NewEgg.com for $29.99. There are also ones available that have FireWire 800 ports on them, but they are pricier. Adding the ExpressCard gives you *an additional FireWire bus* that will have its own 800MB/s dedicated just to it. This is the best way to go since now you will have DUAL buses.
For example I hook my FireWire 800 hard drive up on my FW 800 port, and my MOTU 828 up on the ExpressCard FireWire 400 port. That way, the audio signals coming in are not clogging up the bus that the record drive is set up on... I've been able to get better latency for recording this way!
    Hope this helps!!

  • Problems with Finder on MBP 2014 with os x 10.10

    Hello guys,
i have a problem with my macbook pro 13" from 2014 mid.
Sometimes the finder does not show the files in any folders.
I open the folder 2 times before i can see some files in the folder.
When i see the files, i can not scroll and the font of the files is fat.
I install os x 10.10 again, same Problem. Still reset the PRAM also, without any solution.
    Can somebody help me?
    Thx

Your videos show the Finder in icon view mode, not cover flow. I think this is a bug, but I don't know what triggers it. I've seen one other report like yours.
    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.
