Problem with Setup Assistant and New iMac

I just purchased a new imac intel (actually 2010 model from MacMall on closeout) and I want to transfer my files over from my old imac - 2004 G5 running 10.5.8
During the initial start up of the new imac I choose the option to transfer my information from another mac (using setup assistant).
I connect using firewire and start up the old mac in firewire mode (holding down T).  After the new mac calculates the files to tranfer I cannot chose the continue button - the button is greyed out.  In addition the remaining space available shows a negative (red number).   This also occurs if I choose to transfer from a time machine back up on an external drive.   Help.

You didn't mention what version of OS X is on the new system. I would strongly recommend starting over and using Pondini's
Lion Setup Assistant tips
or
Snow Leopard Setup Assistant tips
depending on what the new system has loaded on it. If you have been using Time Machine or a bootable clone backup for the old system you can restore from that backup rather than having to mess with Target Disk mode.
If you still have difficulty call AppleCare, they're there to help on this type of issue. The number is in the owners manual.

  • Migration Problems with Time Capsule and New MacBook Pro

Hopefully someone on here can help with with this problem I'm having. I just bought the new 13' MacBook Pro this week from the store and I no longer have my old MacBook Pro. I have a Time Capsule with complete backups of my old MacBook Pro and I also have the internal hard drive from it as well.
I had installed the beta version of Mountain Lion on the old MacBook Pro and the new one still has Lion.
The problem is that every time I have tried to use the Migration Assistant (and I've tried 3 times now) my files and applications are getting messed up.
iPhoto won't open. It says that it needs to be updated but when I check to update it it says that there is no update needed.
I'm seriously about to beat my head against the wall because every time I migrate the data it takes about 12 hours. I'm thinking at this point that it might be easier for me to just swap out the internal hard drives in the units because it is possibly an issue with the OS' and wait until next month to try migrating to the new drive again after Mountain Lion is officially launched.

    Bob,
I appreciate your honest and prompt response. I was VERY SPECIFIC when I told the sales rep I was hoping to use the Time Capsule with two different MacBook Pro's on different subnets (one is behind a firewall on a router, one is directly connect to a WAN side IP with no firewall) and the sales rep made a point of saying that the dual band feature would facilitate this connectivity which left me with the impression (obviously wrong) that the WiFi features of the time capsule could be used to communicate with multiple Macs regardless of their own networking configurations. (I have been configuring fairly complicated networks for 20 years and only bought my first Mac two and a half years ago; the second Mac is only six months old; the third will be bought next month.)
This isn't the end of the world for me... it does require reconfiguring my network and doing a lot of port tunneling for the box outside of the firewall in order to bring it inside as well as giving up some remote access redundancies (which were based on the ability to connect to both machines using VNC software which is port specific which means that it needed separate WAN side IP addresses).
Overall I love the Mac approach compared to the nightmare that was (is) Windows (although I do also run an Ubuntu Linux box just to keep me honest). That said, your sales reps do your products a HUGE disservice when they give glib and incorrect answer to what was, I believe in my case, a very specific and precise question.

  • Problem with external hd on new Imac 21,5'

I plug my external hard disk, but Imac doesn't mount it!
I can see it from Utility disk, but I can't activate...
I've tried different port, restart, but it's the same.
The hd is a 500 Gb Western Digital (My passport) formatted NTFS.
I've installed macfuse and paragon ntfs, but the problem is still there.
I've also create another account with administrator permission, but nothing change!
The hd work with no problems on windows and on others imac with paragon or ntfs.

just got a brand new iMac
If you are still within your 15 day return period.  Call Apple they will sent out iDVD at no charge.  (There are no realistic substitutes.)
You MUST speak to a senior advisor to get a free copy. The first tier people cannot do it.

If that doesn't work you can purchase iLife 11  (includes iDVD) on disk.
IDVD is a wonderful piece of software and well worth the low cost of $40.

  • Using Setup assistant on new iMac question.

    Hi everyone,
I just purchased a new iMac and hopefully should be getting it sometime this week. I currently have an older iMac from 2005 running OSX 10.5.8. I will want to use Setup assistant to transfer files, setting, etc... from the old computer to the new computer. I'm wondering what is my best way to do so? I have an external drive that I use for Time Machine backups of my computer. Is it better to transfer files connecting the external drive to the new computer and transfering the files from the Time Machine Backup file? Or should I connect my older computer to the new one and transfer files from the old computer to the new one? Is either way quicker than the other? When I transfer files, will all my keychain passwords transfer as well? Any other tips or information you can give me?
    Thanks in advance!
    Steve

    Hi
I am also about to do this, as soon as it arrives.
I have tried to declutter my old imac as much as I can, I've got rid of a lot of junk, and am planning on rebuilding my aperture and iphoto library as there were a lot of missing masters etc.
My music folder was a mess so I've deleted everything and will redownload from itunes match to the new machine.
So I'll be transferring user accounts, apps, some files, my photo's and some movies, so there is about 190gb of content, but my hdd shows 230gb used.
This is mainly my current account has a library that is >30gb. is there any way i can reduce this or de-kruft it prior to transfer? I dont want to end up moving obsolete caches or backups or software updates over to the new machine.
Does migration assistant act selectively, or just copy the whole folder?
Thanks for any advice or guidance.

  • Problem With PSE-2 and New 1.5 TB Drive

Hi all. First of all, I've been using my registered PSE-2 for several years with no problem. AMD Athalon 7750 dual core at 2.7 Ghz, 2.0 G Memory. WD 1.5 TB primary and WD 500 GB secondary drive.Win XP SP3. I recently had a drive fail and installed a new freshly formatted WD 1.5 TB as my boot drive. Fresh install of WinXP and updates. Now when I install Elements, it appears to install fine. The problem comes when I attempt to start it the first time I get "Could not initialize Photoshop Elements because the scratch discs are full". Then Elements closes, thus not allowing me to do anything with the internal configuration of the program. I have tried unistalling and installing to the 500 GB drive, but still get the same error. I have increased my page file memory Does anyone know of a problem with installing Elements on a large drive or can anyone offer a possible solution to what I am seeing? Thanks in advance for suggestions...
    JohnR.

I think Barbara meant photoshop 7, which was out a little before pse2.
If you hold down the Alt+Ctrl keys just after you start pse2, a dialog
should appear allowing you to choose the scratch disk (keep holding
the keys until the dialog appears)
If you have a recovery partition on your hard drive, try choosing this for
the scratch disk and then exit pse2. Then restart pse2 and from
Preferences>Plug-ins and Scratch Disks choose your regular hard drive for the scratch disk.
Newer versions of pse, at least newer than 3 or 4 don't seem to have this problem.

  • Major Problem with kernel panic on new iMac: HELP!

My housemates 24" core 2 duo imac kernel panicked when playing Call of duty 2 (side question: if anyone has any reason why it keeps freezing and the screen getting full of horizontal lines would love to hear from you)
Now I can not start the computer. Whenever I restart, it plays the chime, but then has another kernel panic. Spoke to apple.. i reset the pram.. and then it came back.. ive zero data deleted my hardrive then re-installed osx.. and it is still doing it!! (i ran hardware tests and said everything was working fine..)
The graphics card is nvidia 7600GT
Also.. When starting up the imac, just after the apple logo white screen turns to the desktop, the screen flashes a lime green for a split second.. i know that shouldnt happen!
It wont let me send a report to apple wen i get a window saying "imac shut down unexpectantly".. when the button clicks.. no report comes up.
The operating is a 24" 2.16 Ghz iMac intel 2 core duo, 1GB RAM!
Any help or advice would be very much appreciated.
    Cheers.

I had the same problems. New iMac 24" arrived last week (a replacement because the first one had a faulty screen and keyboard). Set it up at the weekend and it seemed fine for 48 hours until I started watching a DVD on Christmas Day. About 2 minutes into the DVD I got a kernel panic, then the computer would not restart. I left it about an hour and tried again. It started successfully, but had another kernel panic when I opened the Dashboard. Again, it failed to restart. I think that something is overheating whenever the computer tries to do any 'work' and then it crashes. I too got panics when trying to boot from the installation disc. Spoke to customer support over the phone and nothing we tried worked, so I've had to send back for another replacement system.

  • Digital Video Recorder with Firewire 400 and new iMac

I just got a new iMac which has only 1 firewire800 and no firewire 400 ports. My digital video camcorder has a firewire 400 cable to transfer taped recordings to the computer (I want to import using iMovie 09). So, do I simply need to buy a new firewire 800 cable that will plug into my digital camcorder? The reason I'm hesitant is that I've tried using a USB connection, and iMovie 09 didn't open and doesn't recognize that the digital camcorder is connected when I use USB. Does iMovie 09 just no longer recognize my several year old Samsung digital camcorder, or does it just not recognize it with a USB connection, and it will be fine if I get a firewire 800 connection that fits the new iMac? Is there another type of converter--e.g., a cable that allows a firewire 400 to plug in on one end and has the firewire 800 connection on the other end?
    Thanks

Thanks for the reply. I went ahead and got a new cable and now I can plug for digital video camcorder into my new Mac. Unfortunately, as I feared, the Mac still doesn't recognize the camcorder. I checked the system profiler with the camcorder plugged in, and under Firewire Bus it reads Unknown Device:
    FireWire Bus:
Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec
    Unknown Device:
    Manufacturer: 0xF0
    Model: Unknown
    GUID: 0xF000FFFFFFFF
Maximum Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec
Connection Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec
    Sub-units:
    Unknown Unit:
    Unit Software Version: 0x10001
    Unit Spec ID: 0xA02D
Am I just out of luck--the new mac just doesn't recognize my slightly out of date digital video recorder? Or should I be able to get a driver to make it work?

  • No internet, "PPPoE Server Not Found" message. Same problem with both old and new modems.

    Help please!
My internet connection with my old Westell 6100 modem was working fine, then quit all of the sudden and would not restart. The DSL and Data lights on the Westell modem were both green. The Internet light alternated between red and off.
I tried every troubleshooting thing I could think of:
Powering down and re-starting the modem and computer.
    Resetting the modem.
Checking all of the wire and jack connections.
I plugged my computer ethernet cable straight into the modem, bypassing my router.
I tried both Windows and Mac computers.
I plugged the modem directly into the network interface on the outside of my house to bypass all of my house wiring.
I checked all my phone jacks with a telephone tester to make sure both phone lines were working and not reverse-wired.
I made sure I did not have a DSL filter installed on the modem line.
Verizon Tech Support did a line test and told me the line was fine but that there might be a problem with either my modem or something at the "central office" (not sure what that means). Verizon also sent me a new router as well -- a D-Link DSL-2750B.
The new D-Link router also does not connect to the internet (same problem). The DSL, Data, and Internet lights are all green on the D-Link. I have the computer directly connected to the modem with a new ethernet cable. I repeated the above troubleshooting steps. I went into the router configuration 192.168.1.1 and ran the modem's "Internet Troubleshooting" tests.
There were two error messages on the router configuration screens:
1."PPPoE Server not found" error message is shown on the summary screen.
2."No internet infrastructure present. Please call your infrastructure provider." is shown in the "internet troubleshooting" test results.
Verizon had me change some settings inside the router configuration -- no dice. Verizon ran another line test. A "Level 2 Tech" took over the call and told me that he thinks that the cause of the problem is that the outside wiring coming to my house is reverse-wired. How can this be true since my DSL worked for 2 years before this, my phone line tester indicates my phone lines are wired the right way, and my router reports "PPPoE Server Not Found?"
Verizon is sending out a repair tech to check the outside wiring but I don't think that is the problem at all.
    HELP!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

If you're getting DSL sync (solid DSL light), this sounds like a case of a bad line card to me. I've seen it happen before where it wasn't an account or route issue to the network.

  • Problem with Ipod Touch and new software (2.2.1)

After upgrading to the 2.2.1 I have been unable to listen to it using my car stereo. It will only recognize my ipod sometimes and when it does a majority of the time there will be no sound at all. On my car stereo it shows my playlists and everything but no sound. I never once had a problem with my ipod or stereo until I did this upgrade. I tried switching out the usb cord but that did not help. I then restored my Ipod. I also tried to wipe out the battery completely and then charge (heard on a different message board that that could possibly help). Still having the problem though. I have an Ipod touch and a Pioneer stereo with the USB cable hook up.

yeah i'm having the same problem i have a pioneer navigation system and it will not play my ipod touch after upgrading to 2.2 i called apple to try to find a way to downgrade and they never gave me an answer

  • Problem with MAC Pinning and new VLAN

[Cross posting to Nexus 1000V and UCS forums]
Hi all, I have a working setup of UCS 1.4 (3i) and Nexus 1000V 1.4 and as per the best practice guide am using 'channel-group auto mode on mac-pinning' on the Nexus uplinks. I am having trouble when adding a new VLAN into this environment, and it is a reproducable problem across two different installations.
I go through the usual VLAN creating process on the Nexus, the upstream network and within UCS itself. I create the new vethernet port profile and set it as an access port in the new VLAN. However when I attach a VM (either existing or new) to this new vethernet port profile within vCentre the VM cannot communicate with anything. However, if I disable MAC pinning with 'no channel-group auto mode on mac-pinning', the VM instantly starts to talk to the outside world and the new VLAN is up and running. I can then turn MAC pinning back on again and everything continues to work.
So the question is, is this behaviour normal or is there a problem? Disabling MAC pinning does have a brief interruption to the uplink so is not a viable long-term solution for the customer when they want to add new VLANs. Is there a way to add new VLANs in this scenario without any network downtime, however brief?
    Thanks

    Simon,
Let's gather some further outputs if you're able to recreate this (if this is prod, let me know and I'll whip this up in my lab).
Go through the process of setting up the new VLAN.  Once you confirmed your VM has no connectivity when using a PP tied to the new VLAN, gather the following outputs into a text file and attach to this thread:
    From the VSM:
    show vlan
    show int trunk
    show log last 15
module vem x execute vemcmd show vlan y (x = module of VEM where VM is running, y is the VLAN ID)
module vem x execute vemcmd show bd y (y = VLAN ID)
module vem x execute vemcmd show pc
module vem x execute vemcmd show port
module vem x execute vemcmd show pinning
module vem x execute vemcmd show trunk
From the CLI of UCS Interconnect:
    connect NXOS
    show vlan
    show int trunk
    Also please highlight or Identify:
    - Problem VLAN ID #
    - VM veth # in question (1000v)
    - vEth # for each Service Profile vNIC used for your VEM uplinks (UCS)
We'll start with this and work from here.   Once I have these outputs I'll let you know if I need anything else.
    Regards,
    Robert
(I'll keep this as the main thread, and update the 1000v forum once we resolve)

  • Problems with Epson R300 and my IMac

I have an iMac 24 Intel Duo Core running OS 10. 4.11
I've had my R300 since I bought the computer and it has been working beautifully until the last 4 months or so. When trying to print a dialog box popped up saying that the computer couldn't communicate with the printer. The printer works with my laptop running OS 10.4.11 as well as using CF card directly in printer. I checked the USB cable with another device in the same USB port on my iMac and it works fine too. I tried resetting the PRAM,repairing the disc permissions, restarting numerous times and eventually resetting the printer and reloading the Epson Software. Before reloading the Epson software I went to the library>printers and removed the old Epson software. I also went to Receipts in the Library and removed the Epson receipts as suggested else where on this forum. The new Epson software reload HANGS at "6 more items to load" . If I connect the printer to my IMac I can see it in the Systems profiler box as well as the print dialog box. I'd really like to use my printer. Please help!

    Hi again!
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files!
Disconnect the USB cable from any UPS so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.
    Alternate method...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Tiger Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.

  • Problem with USB speakers and new Mac Mini

I have a USB sound system consisting of a pair of Harman Kardon soundsticks and a woofer from probably 10 years ago (bought and used originally with a Mac). I have tried driving it my new Mac Mini. It works fine for about a minute; then the music stops. Here's what I've tried to diagnose the problem:
    1. The problem does not occur when these speakers are driven from my Macbook Air (about 3 years old).
    2. The OS and iTunes software is up to date on both machines (10.9.5 and 12.0.1.26).
    3. It does not depend on which USB port I use on the Mac Mini.
    4. Using a port on a USB extender on the Mac Mini does not solve the problem.
    5. The iTunes Preference settings are the same on both machines.

Sorry, no actual experience with USB Audio devices.
I found this in the Pro forum, but the outlook doesn't seem good:

  • Problem with FCP 7 and Apple IMAC

Recently loaded FCP 7 on new Apple IMAC, in fact on several IMACs. Most work fine, but on the one there is a problem.
If you open FCP first time, it opens fine. However, once you close it and try to reopen it, it gets part way then quits, crash's, whatever. To get it to open again you have to go to the users library, preferences, and delete the three preference files in the Final Cut User Data folder. Then FCP opens. Hassle because you need to reset all the defaults.
What gives? Anyone else see this problem?
    Mike

David's link simply points out there is a duplicate post.
To the OP, if you have multiple licenses and are having installation issues, call Apple care. You get free 30 day support for installation problems.
If you are trying to install one license on multiple machines, you are on your own as this is basically illegal.

  • Problem with time machine software/new imac

    Hi Everyone.
I recently bought a (non-apple) USB hard drive to use with the time machine software. I have the hard drive plugged into the back of the imac.
Everything is working great, but whenever the imac goes to sleep, it immediately wakes back up with the "improper device removal" message. I guess when the monitor goes to sleep it kills the USB connection.
This is annoying, because I want to leave my hard drive plugged in so that backups can happen automatically, but I also want my computer to be able to go to sleep.
Anybody know of a way to get around this problem?
    Thanks!

I've seen this happen under 2 circumstances: 1) the external hard drive was defective and 2) the xternal hard drive didn't have an independent power supply, it was powered by the USB port. If your drive is powered by the USB port, hook it up to a powered USB hub and that should do the trick.
