Problem with shutting down my computer

Hello,
since some days I have a problem with a simple "sudo halt". If my PC is powered off for some hours and I then power it on it does not "halt" properly. If I do a "sudo halt" it first shuts down completely (no standby light is blinking, fans are all off), but after about 5 seconds it just goes on again.
So the machine reboots and a second "sudo halt" then finally shuts the pc down completely.
I have made some observations:
- it doesn't matter how long the PC is on (some hours or just one minute) - the first halt after a longer period of being powered off fails
- I first had this issue with kernel 3.1 (self configured one), I will test the official arch kernel probably tomorrow
- I have not changed my hardware nor done a bios update (there is none available, too) since about 2 years
Does anybody have a clue what's going on here?
Greetings
matse

I have the same problem with my hardware (Vostro 3500).
It halts, leds aren't shining so it seems that the shutdown succeded. It randomly powers up after a random number of minutes. (I only checked with AC adapter plugged in)
Sometimes it's a matter of a few minutes, and once, I was off to another city and I left it at home. I came back home to find my laptop powered up. It was up for 12hrs and I was off more than 48hrs.
I'm using self-packaged linux-ck: 3.1.0-1-ck.
I also have 3.0.6 installed and I yet have to check if it occurs on this kernel.
@thanos mentioned that downgrading to udev 173-3 helps, but it is my version and i never had newer udev on my system.
Maybe it has sth to do with brcmsmac driver? I also have some problems with it.
UPDATE: I updated ck kernel to 3.1.1-1-ck and it still occurs.

  • Problem with shutting down my P305 Satellite

Good Morning:  I just registered as a new forum member.  I have a P305-S8842 Toshiba Satellite computer, with a Vista Home Basic operating system, that I got last Fall.  I enjoy the computer immensely, and only have one "problem", that of shutting down the computer!  I click the Start button in the lower left side of the screen, select the small arrow and when the selections are displayed, click "shut down".  The computer reacts normally, goes dark, and seems to routinely shut down.  But, within a minute or two, the computer starts up again and the screen lights up as if nothing had happened.  ln frustration, I turn off the computer by either disconnecting the power cord, or click the "hard shutdown button" at the top of the keyboard.  I've read the "How to Vista Guide" magazine, and note that this type of complaint is frequent, the editor commenting that the Vista shutdown was evidently designed by a "commitee ", and was indeed a "sorry tale" of how to devise a proper shut down system.  My situation is not desperate, but I would appreciate any advice or direction as to how to properly shut down my otherwise very compliant and great computer.  Thank you in advance. The default for a Stop error is to automatically restart the computer. Let's fix that so you can see the error message.
Open System Properties (sysdm.cpl). On the Advanced tab, click the Settings button at the bottom under Startup and Recovery. Clear the Automatically restart check box.
On shutdown, look for a message something like this and put it in your reply.
       STOP: 0x000000D1 (0x00000000, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
       DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
If there's a file mentioned, grab that name too.

Have to turn it off via the case button.
Other programs seems to work as expected all the time.
Got a broadband/cable modem that works flawlessy with my notebook so it cannot be the problem.

  • Problems with shutting down the laptop and speakers

it is not always the case but most of the times it happens that my hp speakers do not work  most of the timesand secondly i cannot signout the laptop whenever i try to do so as when i click the option it is not likely to work and then screen gets blank and then i have to forcefully shut down with the power button. my product os HP PAVILION G6 NOTEBOOK PC AND WINDOWS 8 .
Product name: HP Pavilion g6 Notebook PC
    Product number: D5N05EA#A2N
    Windows 8 Single Language 64-bit

    Hi faizraja,
Thank you for your query,  I will do my best to assist you.
I grasp that it will not shutdown from the menu options and the speakers don't work most of the time.
I would try a Refresh Your PC to Resolve Problems (Windows 8). Just to be on the safe side, I suggest backing up your personal files to prevent loss.
Here is a link to  No Sound from Speakers (Windows 8) to assist with the speaker issue. Are you accidentally muting your system?  Here is a link to HP Pavilion g6 Notebook PC Maintenance and Service Guide, please not page 12 item 3 for this option.
If this has not helped, I suggest you do a recovery back to factory. Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows 8).
You will receive a prompt to backup your personal data to prevent loss. If you have not done one recently, I suggest you do one now.

  • Having problems with shut-down of server after I open a socket connection (which fails to connect)

Basically here is an example servlet - new iPlanet 4.1sp9 instance with an empty classpath (apart from the servlet class) - running solaris v5.6 (Generic_111446-02)
If you run the servlet and then try to shut-down iPlanet it hangs. If you remove the 'new Socket(...' line then it's fine. Any ideas why a failed socket connection stops the server restarting? (Connecting to a listening port does not exhibit this behavior).

    Rob:
it's due to JVM signal handler that catches the stop signal and you're forced to use a kill -9 -
Note that the stop script of a fresh install of iWS 4.1SP9 should contain the kill -9 - as a workaround for this known JVM issue.

  • Problems with shutting down and firmware on HP Designjet 110 plus

Hi all, I have managed to install my HP Designjet 110 onto my MAC (OSX 10.9.5) using a later driver for another Designjet model. However I am having two weird problems! 1.  If the paper misfeeds it quite often shuts the printer down for a a few minutes or longer, eventually it just comes back to life itself but it is as if it is getting no power?  I have checked error codes and am getting mostly 79.04 codes and some 83.01 and 86.01 and 33.01 which doesn't seem to exist? 2. I tried to install a firware update as it is using S.05.02 but refuses to do it through the HP utility even after re-installing?  I am being driven insane!!

This forum is focused on consumer level products.  For the Designjet you may have better results posting in the HP Designjet forum here.

  • I have a problem with shut down and log out

They seemed to be doubled on my list all of a sudden. And also i have this dark black box around places i can select or type in never had that before either. Is it a virus?

    Hi Stacey,
when you have this in OSX, then have a look at the Universal Access Preferences in the System Preferences.
Make sure that these are turned off.

  • When I open one particular folder to play the games in it the pointer turns into a pinwheel and I cant open the game or close the folder unless I shut down my computer.  Never happened before and does not happen with any other folder on the desktop.

why does pointer become a pinwheel when I open one particular folder only and prevent me from opening the apps in it and then keep me from closing the folder unless I shut down the computer completely.  I can open all other folders on the desk top without a problem.  My game folder never gave me trouble before.

Try this. Open one of your files. The window that contains your picture is named at the top. Command click on the name and you'll see the entire path starting with its name and then moving to the folder, the folder it is contained in, etc all the way to down to the hard drive volume name. This should tell you where to find the folder.

  • Recurring Message "You Shut Down Your Computer Because of a Problem"

I had a computer crash and since then I get a prompt after login (administrator or any other account) stating: "You shut down your computer because of a problem" and even when I choose to open the apps that were open during the crash it still prompts me again after a reboot.
    Steps I have taken:
    1. Booted into recovery and performed a disk and permissions repair to no avail
    2. Attempted to login on other accounts and received same error.
    3. Used Onyx to clear the cache on boot, kernel as well as applications
    4. Used Oynx to rebuild the LaunchServices and dyld's shared cache.
Still have the problem even after booting into Safe Mode (prompt did not appear then, but reappeared when booting normally)
    Any ideas.

  • Has the "You shut down your computer because of a problem" message changed?

When I restart the computer after a Kernal Panic I get the message "You shut down your computer because of a problem. Click Report to see detailed information and send a report to Apple"; 2 buttons are shown: "Ignore" and "Report...". For some time now, when I click on "Report..." the message disappears but I used to get a window allowing me to type in information about (something like) what I was doing prior to the problem occurring with a button (something like) 'Send Report". Since the "Report" button now causes the message to disappear, is a Report still going to Apple? Thank you.

    Open Console app
View the System Diagnostic Reports by clicking on the disclosure triangle next to it in the log list. If the log list isn't visible, click the Show Log List button.
Look for the latest report starting with "kernel"
Select the report and it will show in the pane on the right.
Select everything in the report except the Anonymous UUID.
Copy and paste it into a reply here.

  • I have a PC.  I would like to sync my iPad2 via itunes.  My computer recognizes my iPad but itunes does not.  I have deleted the itunes program, shut down my computer and restarted and then reinstalled itunes.  I still have the same problem.  Suggestions?

I have a PC.  I would like to sync my iPad2 via itunes.  My computer recognizes my ipad but itunes does not.  I have uninstalled itunes, shut down the computer and restarted plus reinstalled itunes.  I visited the Apple store there is no problem with the iPad or the cord. I still have the same problem and am unable to sync when I plug in the iPad via the USB cord.  Does anyone have further suggestions?

Try going into the control panel, add/remove programs. Uninstall iTUnes, Apple mobile device service, apple application support. Then redownload and reinstall iTunes and see if it'll work
If the computer sees your iPad you know the cable and connection is good, so the issue has to be software.

  • The new firefox twitter app is great - except it disappears every time I shut down the computer and I have to remove and then reinstall it every day!?? I am working on an iMac - if that is causing the problem ...? Thanks.

The new firefox twitter app (mini tab on left of page) is great - except it disappears every time I shut down the computer and I have to remove and then reinstall it every day!?? It won't appear on the page until I do. I am working on an iMac - if that is causing the problem ...? Thanks.

Eustace, thank you so much for writing back.  I will try what you suggested!!
thx for your reply - apparently when I went to the Apple store a long time ago, they restore maybe photos and itunes etc from my external hard drive (passport).  I guess at that time they reinstalled an earlier operating system than my macbook came with and that somehow corrupted FileVault.  apparently there was no sparse bundle (whatever that is) for my old admin account and they said that ever since the install of the older OS that it was actually NEVER backing up anything in my admin account.
Then, I bought Time Capsule and starting backing up to that instead.  I started having problems with it being slow etc and then StartUp Disk full errors and didn't know what to do, so I "Restored" from Time Capsule and that's when I lost everything in my Admin account and was locked out when I tried to log in - it said File Vault error ..."
anyway - that's THAT sad story.  I was told to create a new admin account and I've basically been trying to start over - even though I have a partial save of my computer in Crash Plan and I DO see a sparse bundle listed in there, but I just don't know enough about computers to know if it's something I can get back or if I am just totally doomed.
I'm afraid to reinstall anything because if there is even a remote shot that the other files are still floating around in my computer, I feel like that chance will be shot forever.  I need to hire McGee from NCIS, I just KNOW he could get those files back for me!!!

  • HT5361 I can't shut down my computer because it says mail is open.  It says to close mail and continue shut down.  Problem is I can't open or close mail now.  Can't shut down my computer at all.  What can I do?

I can't shut down my computer because it says mail is open.  It says to close mail and continue shut down.  Problem is I can't open or close mail now.  Can't shut down my computer at all.  What can I do?

If you cannot get mail to quit/force quit, you can always remove power from your Mac.
NOTE: removing power is a bad idea, and can result in data loss, but sometimes it is the only thing left to do.
Press and hold the power button for 5 to 10 seconds, and the Mac will power off.
When you power back on, the Mac should reboot.

  • How do I get my mac mountain lion to stop saying, "You shut down your computer because of a problem?

My Mac Mountain Lion desktop computer keeps saying, "You shut down your computer because of a problem." How do I keep this from happening?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the contents — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post shutdownStall, spin, or hang reports.
