Problem with SMC firmware update.

I can't seem to run it. Everytime I go to, it never installs. I have a feeling that it has to do with bootcamp. Whenever I restart my computer, it runs Windows (I don't know how to fix that.) so I can't just press restart, I have to actively start OSX.
I go to install it, my computer starts up, and then the installer pops up again. I press restart, start up the computer, same thing. I've done this 4 or 5 times and the same thing happens everytime. What should I do?

Sheir,
Go to System Preferences>Startup Disk and verify that OS X is the Startup OS that is selected for your Mac. If it is not the one selected, select it and restart your Mac a couple of times to verify that it will restart into OS X. If it won't then we need to figure out what is going wrong.
If it successfully restarts into OS X then go to Applications>Utilities and look for the SMC Firmware Update.app that should have been placed there and trash it. Also trash the SMC Firmware Update.dmg if you have it. I don't think you will because Software Update has been doing the install. Empty the trash.
Then go to Apple Downloads and manually download a fresh version of the iMac (early 2006) SMC Firmware Update released on 16 MAY 2006.
Shut down all your other programs except the Finder and Dashboard. Unplug everything from your Mac except your USB keyboard and mouse. Turn off Airport and Bluetooth if they're on.
Make sure you are completely familiar with the SMC Firmware installation instructions.
Try to do the install again.

  • Having problems with SMC Firmware Update 1.8

I installed the MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.8 yesterday and have since experienced a number of problems. I am running a 15 inch, Mid 2012 MacBook Pro, btw. First, after the intial install the sytem would not reboot. I had to do a physical reset of the SMC controller to get the system to power on again (sft-cntl-option-power key sequence). Once the system rebooted, the fan in stuck on high and the battery meter in the controll bar does not show status, just displaying an "X" in the battery.  I went into the Software Update utility and the SMC update is still listed as available, I tried reinstalling it, and the situation has not changed. The fan noice is annoying and I'm aftraid to disconnect the laptop from the AC adapter. Please advise.

Firmware updates don't affect to Windows and OS X. The firmware makes your hardware work, not the operating system, so you won't have any problem doing this

  • Problems with EFI Firmware Update to 1.5 for mid 2010 Mac Pro, and sleep issues

Hello to the community, I have run into an annoying issue.
I need to update the EFI firmware on my 8 core mid-2010 Mac Pro. I downloaded the EFI update from the apple website from here : http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1321
But everytime I download it, as I click to install, it gives me the message:
    Alert
This software is not supported on your system.
But clearly this is the correct EFI for my computer. I tried burning the Firmware restoration onto a CD from here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1320
But the computer did not respond the way it said it should (with the 3 flashes/beeps etc.) and have the optical drive open for the CD.
    So I'm completely stuck.
*Also my Mac Pro had issues with sleep, when I put it to sleep, sometimes when I try to bring it back, it restarts itself, and other times, it just turns itself on and the monitor screen remains black, so I have to hit the power button to turn it off then back on again. This only happnens when the computer has been put to sleep for a slightly extended period of time, roughly 20mins +, sometimes longer.  I was trying to solve this problem by first updating the firmware because I think it could be related to that, but I've had this problem with the firmware so I couldn't find out. This is actually the bigger problem for me because it will affect my work. I am currently using an iMac while I fix up this mac pro.
I'm a music composer so I've upgraded many aspects of my system due to work. I have a 1TB Samsung 840 evo SSD, 2 seagate 2 TB HDD, and 1 WD 1TB HD (the original one in the mac pro), along with 32 GB of RAM. So my only problems are the firmaware and the weird activity when the computer is put to sleep.
Some help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Problem about SMC Firmware Update 1.7

So I was browing and suddenly a notification pops up about OSX update. It was about SMC Firmware Update 1.7
    I am using a MBP 15" Late 2011. ( OSX Version 10.8.2 )
I did clicked update and it asked me to restart. But instead of a restart it automatically logged out. So I logged in and clicked Update and then when it asked me for restart it clicked restart. So now it showed me a Grey screen, the cursor was still there. The cursor was still moving. So I though now this is getting updated but it didn't showed any window of Software update for 20 mins. I assumed it was downloading the update.
The update is just 1 MB or something and I have a connection of 2Mbps so 10 mins were too long I guess. I had to shut the mbp by holding the power button. after 2 mins I press the power button. it started and showed the window of software update and downloaded it automatically and updated, fans went on full speed as mentioned in the update.
Now that I check my firmware version. It shows me " SMC Version (system):          1.69f4 "
    My question is shouldn't it be SMC Version : 1.7 ? :|

That's the right FW version. Apple is all screwy with numbers. There posted FW update 1.7 mean just about nothing.
If you want to save yourself a few headaches turn off the Auto Update system and then periodically run Software Update. If there are updates look at what they are and you can pick and chose which ones you install. If you don't need it, the system is running fine, there is no good reason to constantly do updates.
This also give you a chance to look at the support document for the update and do a google search to see if there are any problems being reported.

  • Problem with the firmware update...

Now I have a new problem... I had the Xserve on my intranet so long that when I went to update it and plugged it into the Internet, there seems to be a firmware update. I started the update, and its supposed to come up with a status bar, but so far nothing. It's been 4 hours, and the screen is not getting a signal. I'm afraid that if I turn the system off and the system is actually upgrading the firmware that will mess up the system royally. I'm going to leave it for the next 24 hours, but if it's still sitting there chugging away with the blank screen, I'm going to have to turn it off.
Have any of you seen this problem? I may try and reset the firmware. I never had these problems until now... it's starting to get aggravating...

Clearly I have to answer my own questions in the server forums...
For anyone who may end up with a similar issue and finds this. Your firmware update probably didn't work correctly, download the Apple Firmware Restoration CD. Make sure you find the correct version for your computer, like my version was 1.4.

  • Weird problems after SMC firmware update

    Hi,
So I have a MacBook Pro bought in July 2007. I installed the new firmware update yesterday and noticed today that my computer gets a lot warmer. If I try to run an application that does more processing, some buttons on my screen turn black, I can't move windows and the backlight starts to flash like crazy giving me a nice disco effect if I turn the lights off.
/var/log/system.log will show stuff like the following:
    Jun 2 20:33:59 edvard-fagerholms-macbook-pro kernel[0]: NVDA(OpenGL): Channel exception! status = 0xffff info32 = 0x1 = Fifo: Fifo Method Error
    Jun 2 20:34:00 efagerhos-macbook-pro kernel[0]: 0000000b
    Jun 2 20:34:15 efagerhos-macbook-pro kernel[0]: NVChannel(Display): Graphics channel timeout!
    Jun 2 20:34:15 efagerhos-macbook-pro kernel[0]: NVDA(OpenGL): Channel exception! status = 0xffff info32 = 0x1 = Fifo: Fifo Method Error
    Jun 2 20:34:15 efagerhos-macbook-pro kernel[0]: 0000000b
    Jun 2 20:34:59 efagerhos-macbook-pro kernel[0]: NVChannel(Display): Graphics channel timeout!
All my problems started after trying an application written in Java, which seemed to require lot of processing power and made my computer very warm. After this I have also been unable to get my DVD drive to read any DVD. If it turns to be the update, I am pretty ****** of that they release an update that can physically kill a perfectly well working computer. Especially, when it's already out of warranty.
Does anyone else experience any similar problems?

I am pretty sure it's the graphics even though the Apple "genius" claimed it wasn't. The genius told me the RAM chips were broken. Ok, so I bought new RAM, the computer booted up, worked for about 30 minutes and the problem came back.
However, the computer boots up flawlessly to single-user mode by pressing apple-s during boot (even with the old RAM), so I can access the disk and use it as a typewriter in the console... I also coded a poor mans memory tester that allocated memory and wrote random stuff to it, and it worked fine with my old RAM chips. If I try to start the machine normally, then according to the logs, the computer freezes at the exact moment when it's starting up the login screen. If I assume correctly how OS X works, I would suspect that this is the moment it switches from some kind of a video BIOS framebuffer mode into an accelerated mode provided by the nvidia graphics driver.
I also noticed after using the root console in single-user mode for about 30 minutes (I was making a Linux USB stick to start it through rEFIt, to do some further diagnostics) that the black console background had these faint blue horizontal lines going from the top of the screen to the bottom. This is usually a sign that the graphics chip is busted.
It seems like it's time to get a new appointment in the Genius Bar.

  • Problem with N5800 Firmware Update v 40.0.005

I have a problem with adding contacts to the home screen contacts bar.
I recently updated the firmware on my 5800 with the new browser and touch screen functions. When I view contacts normally using the contacts icons everything seems OK and all my contacts are there. However, when I add contacts to the contacts bar on the phone's home screen, the list of contacts the phone pulls up includes a number of entries called "unnamed" which I can not see when viewing contacts normally. In this selection list I am also missing some of my contacts that I can see if I view contacts in the normal way? So I am not able to add these to the contacts bar?
Anyone have any idea what's going on or a fix?
    Thanks.

I am on v 51.0.006 and it gives Handwriting, Mini qwerty and Full qwerty options in Landscape mode...and Handwriting, Mini qwerty and Alphaneumeric in portrait mode...

  • Problem with E52 Firmware update 051.018

I have a Chinese Traditional Nokia E52 and did the software update today to 051.018 (as it was marked important). I encountered the following issues:
    1) Pressing the "green/pick-up" button does not bring up the call logs anymore.
    2) I can't even access the call logs from the main menu. The icon is there, but nothing happens when I click on it.
    3) The phone is not remembering the last 6~8 symbols (such as , , ; : - ~) from the SMS menu when I'm typing an SMS.
    4) The phone no longer has "Full-Character" symbols (double byte)
I tried everything, hard reset (*#7370#) and formatting the phone (power+3+*+Green) and I cannot get the above issues resolved. I wiped out my entire phone and all my apps to try to fix the problem, yet no luck.
This is obviously a pretty serious bug and I hope that there will be an update soon. Otherwise I cannot use a phone without a 'phone log' function!
    Help!!!!

I forgot to mention that "Advanced Call Manager' was wiped out from my E52 and it was bundled with my phone when I bought it. Now it's gone....

  • Major problems with iOS4 firmware update on my 3GS iPhone!  Anyone else?

First, it appears to have reset my home wireless router in the midst of the update to the default settings, thankyouverymuch. Then the new wallpaper don't allow you to set your home screen to none or blank or plain old black. And in the process of me trying to find one that wasn't too busy, I ended up deleting my old lock screen wallpaper (a photo that I loved) and when I reset it, the image resolution majorly $ucks. And what's with the instand messaging not popping up on the screen when you get one? How are you supposed to know it's there? and the email options default is set on "threading" which is very confusing (although I did figure out how to undo that one). What is UP with this release???? Worst EVER.

First, it appears to have reset my home wireless router in the midst of the
    update to the default settings,
How is this the fault of the update? your router crashed. Deal with that separately, Was it an Apple router?
Then the new wallpaper don't allow you to set your home screen to none or blank
    or plain old black.
This has never been an option in any version. You could create a solid background in any color, save as an image and use that.
I ended up deleting my old lock screen wallpaper (a photo that I loved)
Just reset your background to that image again. You can use any picture you want.
And what's with the instand messaging not popping up on the screen when you get one?
    That is in Settings::Messages
the email options default is set on "threading" which is very confusing
All it does is stick a little number on the right of messages in the thread. Pretty easy to use IMO, but obviously you can just turn it off if you don't like extra level it creates.
In my opinion this has been the easiest and fastest update to apply of any, and I have been here since 1.0. Clearly obvious that a huge effort was placed it getting the GUI to work elegantly. +

  • SMC firmware update 1.3 safe with smcfancontrol 2.2.2?

Anyone know if it's safe to do the recent SMC firmware update 1.3 with smcfancontrol installed?
    I'm running OSX 10.5.7 on a 15" MBP.
    Thanks!

Apple Expert on the phone today was not concerned at all with SMC Fan Control. I'll try it later though. Right now I'm backing things up in preparation for my trip to the store tomorrow. I suspect I was having SMC issues before and this update tweaked it some more. I've had the issue of the light on the magsafe adapter not working at all, (or always red, even when battery was charged) for so long that I stopped worrying about it. Did an SMC reset for that once or twice, but then never bothered as it didn't seem like that big a deal. Later I'll uninstall smcfancontrol and try the update again, but I think at this point I'm sol. The two techs I spoke to today were helpful, friendly and called me within a minute of sending my request. That's a good thing, at least.

  • Macbook (late 2006) RSS unable to install SMC firmware update

    Hello,
I bought my macbook on the 27th of December, and the first week it worked fine. Then started the RSS. I did some googling and found out some stuff about RSS, tried to install the SMC firmware update but it would just tell me that I don't need the update. After two weeks of constant RSS:ing I called applecare and told the guy about the problem, he told me to try to update the SMC and if I can't do it bring it in for service.
Monday the 15th of January I went to the macstation in downtown Vancouver and told them about the trouble, they tried to boot it, and it actually booted but after like 3 minutes the macbook crashed. For about 10 minutes two guys tried to boot it and so on, but they didn't get it to boot. So they took it in for service and somebody was going to check out the macbook and see if it would need a replacement logic board - which it did. So on Monday they ordered the logic board, and today Monday 22nd of January I got it back. Now the thing that bothers me is that when I now try to update the SMC firmware (my current version is btw 1.13f3) it still just says that This computer does not need this update. oh well - i went to apples support page to try to see if there would be a newer release of the smc and then I noticed that in the bottom of the SMC firmware 1.1 update page it says:
Note: This update is only or the original MacBook, and will not install on a MacBook (Late 2006).
    Then I really was like W T F?!
I would assume that people who work for apple would know that the SMC update will not update on a computer from late 2006, but nobody ever mentioned this to me.
I've now had the computer for about an hour and the CPU temperature is at about 50 degrees celcius, with firefox, msn and a terminal open... about 5% cpu load.
What I'm really wondering is that is there anyone who has similar problems with a macbook late 2006? I guess I'll just have to see if it works and just like I told the guy at macstation, if it starts RSS:ing again I'll be banging on their door

  • MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.3 update freezes mouse pointer

After installing the update released today 5/28 (MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.3) my mouse pointer stalls, freezes on occasion. Very annoying. Anyone seeing the same. Fixes ... ?

After applying the SMC Firmware update a few days ago, my keyboard and trackpad were acting erratic (freezing, hanging). It was immediately after the update and I had not had any problems with it before.
I have also had random crashes, inability to use the keyboard/trackpad ever since.
Today my keyboard and trackpad are completely unusable, external mouse works fine.
I will take it to an Apple store tomorrow, hopefully my firmware can be reverted.
Sounds like a lot of other people are having problems with this update. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9549034&tstart=0#9549034
