Problem with spot channels when importing PSD into AI CS3

tried the Windows forum, and adobe tech support in The Netherlands. Hopefully someone here can help.
b Problem description:
I make spot colour separations of full colour artwork by using the index separation method in Photoshop. This creates several spot color channels in my PSD file.
Normally I just place this PSD file in Illustrator CS2, and when I embed the file Illustrator makes objects of the spot channels. I can change the colors of these objects and delete them etc.
Now with Illustrator CS3 when I import and embed a PSD file it just creates one object called "Spot Color Image". I can no longer adjust or delete separate spot channels.
Maybe there is another way to achieving this but I cannot find it myself. Without this method Illustrator CS3 has become useless for me.

Hi again, I did the same, and I see what you mean. The original image is an image, the channels are separate objects for me, but the original image isn't different channels.
I found this in the Help file:
Spot colors (up to 31 spot channels per file) import as a single N‑Channel raster image, which is placed over the process color image. The spot colors are added to the swatches panel as custom colors with the same name as in Photoshop. Imported spot colors separate correctly.
Will think some more. Not sure what to suggest. Someone must have an answer to help you.

  • Do you see problems with text size when importing from Photoshop?

    Hi all -
We're working on improving some things in the Photoshop-to-Reflow workflow, and right
now specifically investigating trouble with imported text.
Aside from the desire to have support for local fonts, are there any problems you run into
when importing text from Photoshop into Reflow? We've heard some issues with text size and position,
but want to make sure we understand all of the cases.
If you have problems in this area, please share them in this thread, and I'd also love to get some
sample PSDs that demonstrate the problems. (You can send them directly to me; vmitnick at adobe dot com .)
    thanks,
    Vic

I'm using CS4.. and I'm using the standard "Save As" .pdf features....
and I'm reading it with adobe acrobat pro 9.1...
i think it has something to do with compression. but i can't figure out how to solve it. converting the text to symbols maybe?

    Hi Srikanth,
I think I'm facing the same issue as you. I looked at the note 323736 but my system seems to be up to date (at least for this issue). I have SAP_BASIS release 700.
Did you upgrade your system ? Did you do something else ?
    Thanks for your help.

  • Problem with File Naming when Importing in LR 3

When I previously imported in LR 2, under File Naming, I used a custom template:
{Custom Text}_{Date(YY)>>}_Sequence # (001)>>}.  Sometimes I added custom text and it showed up in my file name and other times I didn’t and then the file name just included the Date and the Sequence # without the Custom Text.
I am having a problem when importing in LR 3.  The dialog box on the right is now called File Renaming instead of File Naming. I am using the same Custom Template I used when importing in LR 2.  There is a line in the dialog box for Custom Text as there was in LR 2.  If I add a custom text name, it shows up at the beginning of the file name correctly as it did in LR 2.  But if I leave it blank, you’ll remember in LR 2 the resultant file name just included the Date and Sequence #, but in LR 3 the file name now is “untitled_Date_Sequence #”.
How do I do this so it doesn’t have “untitled” in the file name?
    Thanks,
    Matthew Kraus

Thanks for reply.  I am using Windows 7 64 bit. I am using 'Copy", not copy to DNG. There are 2 screen shots attached.  The first screen shot is from LR2 and you can see there is no "untitled" in the file name example.  The second is from LR3 and you can see "untitled" is in the first part of the file name in the example.  Do you need any other information?

    Very odd.
But if you want help you will need to provide more details: OS, version of Acrobat, how the file were created, etc.

  • CS5 Misinterprets Layered PSDs with Spot Channels

I haven't seen this mentioned yet; if you routinely use layered Photoshop files with spot channels, and might be opening older files into CS5 be warned that CS5 appears to misinterpret the tonal values in the spot channels of these documents.
    Steps to reproduce:
Create a layered CMYK PSD file with one or more spot channels, and make sure that this file contains halftones on the spot channel(s), not all solid coverage.
Flatten the image and save a copy.
Place both images into Illustrator CS5. Notice that the spot channel(s) in the layered version appears much lighter than the flattened version (which matches the original image), and will output lighter as well. The CMYK channels display and output correctly.
Repeat the test with CS4. Both versions of the image will place and output identically from Illustrator.
Not sure what's going on here, but the only workaround I can find is to flatten the image. This could prove very dangerous when opening CS4 files that were set up this way into CS5, especially if the user is not familiar with how the file is supposed to look (prepress operators, etc.).
[Tested using CS5 and CS4, Mac OS X 10.6.x and Windows Vista.]
Additional info 3:39pm: if you start with a flattened image and add layers, retaining the Background layer, this issue does not occur. It is only if the PSD is "fully layered" with no flattened Background layer.

I don't actually see this but you
mention this happens with older files and I do not have any older files
like this so I really can't say.
No, this is with new documents created in CS5 as well. I referred to older files as they are my biggest concern -- if an older file was set up like this, with layered images containing spot channels, they are going to open and output different from CS5. And the likelihood of this going through to production without being caught is not insignificant. (These could be older files we have on backup that we're processing for a reorder, or from a customer who is using an older version of Illustrator...)
But I do like the idea that when you import a
photoshop with spot channels in CS 5 the spot channels are treated as
separate objects in the layers panel, rather than one collective object
like in CS 4. And that the spot color is properly set to multiply.
That is actually pretty neat, I hadn't noticed that (since we always link our images, rarely do we embed them). I'm not sure that Multiply mode shouled change the image data like this, and I'm also not sure how the file is handled by AI when it's linked... so I grabbed our film exposure bar and brought it into CS5 four ways (embedded / layered, embedded / flat, linked / layered and linked / flat) to test all variations.
The results are the same no matter how the file is placed; the spot content in the layered file is lighter across the board than the file, and the flattened version is correct.
(The forum resricts the size of attached images, and the resized image of the full test is a little difficult to see. I posted a second one below that, which is a close-up of a layered and flattened image showing the differences in the spot color data -- the lighter one is from the layered file, and is significantly altered from the original file.)

I don't use iTunes's "fetch artwork", so I'm not 100% sure, but unless you are signed in to your iTunes account, artwork is not automatic. Even then, iTunes doesn't always find it.
You can copy-and-paste artwork from the inernet, either Amazon or Google. I use 300x300 pixel images.
For the future, if you have iTunes questions, you might be better off posting them in the iTunes for Mac forum, this is iTunes for Windows. In this situation, it doesn't make any difference, but next time maybe it will.

    Please don't shout.
Has the unit EVER been jailbroke?  Has it EVER been dropped?  Did it EVER get excessively wet?  Did you EVER load a pirated developer's version of the IOS?
If "No" to all the above, first try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore and you have IOS-6 or lower, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  Also, if you have IOS-7, read this.

  • Photoshop images with spot channels in Indesign CS6 (layout question)

I've got an Indesign CS6 layout that will have a spot varnish when it goes to press. Right now I've got a layout with psd files that have spot channels in them that will be used for the spot varnish.
My question is, in Indesign when I'm laying this out should I have one layer with all the psd artwork (with no spot channels) and then a layer on top of that with the psd files with the psd layers turned off with the spot channel showing? I want to make this easy to print in the office so by doing it this way I could just turn the spot layer off and print.
Will this work for the printer?
layer 1 psd files with no spot channels
layer 2 psd files with photoshop layers turned off with the spot channel showing

Besides the obvious extra work of tracking 2 images, there would be potential problems if the images needs to be scaled and moved, and you would have to assume people downstream would know what's going on—should the layer be on or off?
I would double check with the current printer—they should know the only way to view a spot is via Sep or Output preview by turning CMYK off—magenta could just as easily be process as  spot.
Take a closer look at the Alias method. Here it is with your magenta defined SPOT VARNISH.
With SPOT VARNISH set as No Alias in Ink Manager and with Overprint turned on:
And with an additional spot color defined as white named CLEAR VARNISH. When you need to print in house alias SPOT VARNISH to CLEAR VARNISH and check Simulate Overprint in the Print dialog. You can get to Ink Manger via the Print>Output dialog or Swatches panel:
All you have to do is delete the CLEAR VARNISH before sending the job to the printer or exporting

  • When importing images into LR5 on my laptop, the photos all have a wide yellow streak through them. This only happens on the laptop; I can import the images onto my desktop LR and there isn't the streak of colour.   Can someone help?

When importing images into LR5 on my laptop, the photos all have a wide yellow streak through them. This only happens on the laptop; I can import the images onto my desktop LR and there isn't the streak of colour.   Can someone help?
This is happening even with photos that were taken on another camera, not just mine.  My daughter told me that the laptop recently fell.  The yellow streak is not anywhere else on the laptop, just on the photos in LR.

I have had this problem on my desktop.  I have been attempting to reproduce it where it can be debugged. Here are some observations/facts in my environment--no conclusions:
    1. I do not import from camera or memory stick directly into LR.  I copy all images (using Explorer) from camera to two different locations (backup location first); and then my working area. In both cases, after files are copied I mark them Read-only.
    2. Poor observation, but in any event: the issue has only occurred when I do a large number of images. Its a poor observation as I have no exact number.  I suspect when I do less than 50 always works well every time.  However, I have also done some very large imports without issue.
    3. Error only occurs with my RAW images--for me that's NEF.  I have multiple cameras--those that only capture jpg images have never had an issue in LR.
    4. Even if the file is marked Read Only issues can still occur.  I then remove the image from the disk using LR -- and then manually (Explorer) copy in my backup image -- re import again and all is well.  I think one time I exited LR and replaced the bad file with a backup and restarted LR and all was well again.
    5. When it occurs I have performed a HASH value on the broken file and on the backed up file to determine if the file contents has changed--and each time the file contents has changed.
    6. I have had this occur immediately after import, but most often it occurs like this... import large number of images; Make changes in Development Module on random image, export jpg of changes--exit LR. Open up LR and file is corrupted.
    7. I have had this issue on multiple USB drives ( okay just 2 different drives have been tested ).
What next--fire up Process Monitor and monitor the system (specifically LR) to see if it reports any file open for write access when this occurs.  So, far I have not had process monitor actually running when it occurs--one of these days.

  • When importing photos into iPhoto I get an error Unreadable Files:

When importing photos into iPhoto I get an error Unreadable Files: The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data).
I can open the JPG in question with PREVIEW, photoshop etc.. actually if I try to import a photo that I had originally imported it also fails..
    Please help... Thank you..

I too had this error message (and to be honest, it was becoming a bit of a pain). I resolved it in a slightly different way to Terence.
I had 10 photos that were allegedly unreadable; however, as Terence rightly says, they are duplicates. When I opened iPhoto I mad a note of each of the files concerned and did a Spotlight search throughout my hard drive.
For each photo, there were four or five duplicates. I deleted all but one of each of the photos and then reopened iPhoto. No more error message.
The original problem stemmed from importing my files directly from an external device I was using with a previous computer [that was running XP].
    Anyway, hope this helps.

  • Problems with color matching when printing...

Hi, I work for a small family business in the P.O.P. industry.  We currently have myself and one other designer, we both take illustrator files that have come from the graphic design firm that we contract with and get them ready to print on our Vutek QS3200.  However ever since acquiring the printer we have begun to run into problems with the colors when printing.  When the files are exported off of my computer, I use either .tif or .pdf files, they print as they should, the colors seem to match the proof and everything goes smoothly.  However when the other designer exports a file, he tends to do mainly pdfs, the colors tend to be extremely different from where we want them.  Also we will get very strange results, such as yesterday he kept getting a faint yellow 1/2" border around his prints.  After I believe 3+ hours of him trying, I was given the original CD and instructed to try.  After 15-20 minutes of making the changes that we needed to make (adding a new price point) and ripping, mine printed perfectly.
We both use Macs, both have CS3 Design standard, only differences between the computers are mine is newer and a bit faster, and I'm running OS 10.5.6 and he has 10.4.  He has also at some point loaded various color profiles, whereas my CS package is just whatever the default is when I loaded it.  When we were being trained he grabbed the color profile off of the Colorburst RIP server and loaded onto his computer, plus I believe he has a couple for freelancing purposes on there as well.  My thought is that these profiles are somehow corrupting the files that are going through that computer, but I honestly am lost with it at the moment.  He believes the problem lies within the fact that he does not have the newer OS, I honestly cannot see that as having any effect on this at all.  I was wondering if anyone has run into any similar problems, or if anyone might have any advice on this issue?  I would really like to be able to solve this, as I was hired to do mainly structural design for the P.O.P. and I'm having to put in a lot of overtime to get my work done along with the additional work that I'm having to do.
    Thanks for your time

I've got a few years experience calibrating large format printers.  First, the Yellow sounds like a file problem.  I used to work with two workstations, one PC ( RIP station ), and one Mac ( file prep station ).  I tend to agree with you in that the OS is probably not the problem.  But, any Colorburst profiles should remain in the RIP, not in the originator application.  My workflow consisted of creating EPS files that were based on established color settings in their given applications ( i.e., Illustrator, Photoshop ) which were interpreted by the RIP which had it's own calibrated profile ( perhaps more than one based on how many different substrates were being used ).  Your partner may be complicating things by incorporating a RIP profile prematurely.  If there are deviations big enough to be noticed, there has to be something in the application color settings that is causing some type of corruption.  This could lead back to the operating system, but I would think it lies somewhere in Bridge or the application color settings.  Start there.  You should seriously consider implementing a calibration system if you do not have one already.  Another slight possibility is the driver's ability to interpret files coming out of Leopard vs. files coming out of Tiger.  It may benefit you both to be in the same operating system dynamics, using the same driver versions and RIP profiles.  At the very least, match everything that is currently working successfully and put them on both machines.  If there is still a noticeable problem in color matching, then something is seriously wrong and you should call in a prepress profiling expert.  Hope this helps.

  • Importing .PSDs into CC as movieClips

    Hello,
I rely on flash for work, importing psds into flash is a regular part of my day - but it looks like with FlashCC the funtionality to import layers as movieclips, and to set the registration point of those movie clips has been removed. Im working with multiple files with hudreds of layers, and going through converting each layer into a movieclip is very inconvenient. Is there something Im missing or is there no way to do this?

This was changed in flash CC. You can see more details on http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1238722?tstart=0
Have a bug created and tarcking this internally for a later update.

evrything is right wite my appleID.

First try to create a pdf file of the book as described in this Apple document: iPhoto '11: Preview a book, card, or calendar before you order or print it.
If you are unsuccessful in creating the pdf file then boot into  Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode and try again.  If that works you can continue and order the book while in Safe Mode.
Be sure to keep the pdf file of the book to compare with the printed copy when it arrives.
