Problem With Starting Mac

Hi I have this problem with my Powerbook that Im trying to solve without having to reinstall the operating system. Heres what happened. I was using the Mac when an update popped up that was for the PowerPC and so i clicked install. As the update was installing I went on the internet through Safari yet suddenly the computer froze (other then then itunes which was still playing my song). As it happens, I decided to manually shut down the computer, but when I started it up again, it went to the gray loading screen and then would pop up the is black message that said please restart your computer. I did this and the screen came up again and thus is now a never ending loop. If anyone has any ideas on how I can fix this problem it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

If you have access to another G3 or G4 Mac with a FireWire port, hook your PowerBook and that computer up with a FireWire cable and restart the PowerBook with the T key held down. From the other machine, download and run the Mac OS X 10.45 updater on the PowerBook's hard disk, and then restart your PowerBook normally.
If not, you need to reinstall Mac OS X to fix your issue; doing an Archive and Install while saving your user and network data should be sufficient. This issue happened because you restarted your computer while the 10.45 update was running, which resulted in a damaged set of components which cannot start up any machine.

I do not recommend reformatting your harddrive and reloading your software.  This is a Windows thing. On an older mac it may be difficult to find all your software again.
Best to have greater than 2gig of free space.  Many posters to these forums state that you need much more free space: 5 gig to 10 gig or 10 percent of you hd size.

Be careful when deleting files. A lot of people have trashed their system when deleting things. Place things in trash. Reboot & run your applications. Empty trash.
Go after large files that you have created & know what they are.  Do not delete small files that are in a folder you do not know what the folder is for. Anything that is less than a megabyte is a small file these days.

    Buy an external firewire harddrive.
For a PPC computer, I recommend a firewire drive.
    Has everything interface:
    FireWire 800/400 + USB2, + eSATA 'Quad Interface'
    save a little money interface:
    FireWire 400 + USB 2.0
This web page lists both external harddrive types. You may need to scroll to the right to see both.

  • Got a message that there is a problem with my Mac OS X Kernal. my PowerBook has crashed 4 times in the last week and happened when backing up to Seagate plus ext. hard drive.

my PowerBook G4 has crashed 4 times in the last week. I got a message that there is a problem with the Mac OS Kernal. Does anyone know what this means?

Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. What external devices do you have connected? When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices except your monitor, keyboard and mouse. Do you experience the same problems?
To eliminate RAM being the problem, Look at this link: Testing RAM @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
Do you have an Apple Hardware Test disc? Running the Apple Hardware Test in Loop Mode is an excellent troubleshooting step for finding intermittent hardware problems. It is especially useful when troubleshooting intermittent kernel panics. If Loop Mode is supported by the version of the Apple Hardware Test you are using, you run the Extended Test in Loop Mode by pressing Control-L before starting the test. Looping On should appear in the right window. Then click the Extended Test button. The test will run continuously until a problem is found. If a problem is found, the test will cease to loop, indicating the problem it found. If the test fails, be sure to write down the exact message associated with the failure. In some cases, RAM problems did not show up until nearly 40 loops, so give it a good run.
May be a solution on one of these links.

  • Can't get past the blue screen with "starting Mac OS X"

I am having problems with starting my iMac. It gets to the blue screen with "starting Mac OS X" but won't go beyond that point. I was able to get the disc drive open with the help of other posts, holding down the mouse while turning on the computer, but the drive won't stay closed with the install disc in it. I have even tried holding down the "c" key while restarting the computer and it wouldn't work. Any help would be greatly appreciated. So much info that I could really use. Also, please keep in mind that I am not too computer savy. Simple language please.
    Thanks

If the steps I provided in my earlier post are not helping, then I see your options at this point as follows:
    1. Run the Apple Hardware Test (AHT) that came the affected computer. See my "Apple Hardware Test" FAQ for comprehensive advice on using the AHT in troubleshooting.
    2. Performing an Archive and Install. For important tips on this, see my "General advice on performing an Archive and Install" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the specified order.
    3. Take the computer in for service. If there is an Apple Retail Store in your area, I'd recommend taking it there. You may wish to call ahead to make an appointment at the Genius Bar.
    Good luck!

    Priscilla,
if your Mac is still in warranty, then you should contact the Argentinian technical support service. If it is out of warranty, then we can try to lend a hand. (We’re just fellow Apple product users here.)

Thanks.  These drivers are for the audio, etc. for a dell laptop I purchased used.  ( Needed something cheap for a training video that would only run on Windows.  Tried Emedia player but picture was too fuzzy.)  Dell support said I should contact Apple support for instructions on how to get the drivers onto the jumpdrive.  Any tips on doing that?

  • Problem with starting Windows when W510 in docking station

When I put in my W510 to the docking station, I have usually every second day problems with starting up Windows operation system.
I make 2 videos, where on the first 100_1060.MOV you can see starting Windows when it is frozen (first 1 minute record, I start record after about 3 minutes frozen), then I have to reboot W510 by on/off button and start ThinkVantage.
On the second video 100_1061.MOV is starting operating system after ThinkVantage process, this start is OK.

  • Problem with starting more than one SwingWorker

    Hello
I wonder if anyone could tell me if there are known problems with starting more than one SwingWorker thread at once?
In response to an action the user performs, I need to obtain several lists of things from the server. This includes a couple of server-calls, and I want to do the server calls in a thread outside the awt-event thread. So I start a couple of SwingWorker-threads. This works fine sometimes, but not always. Sometimes code in some of the SwingWorkers finished method does not update the ui. I can see that the correct calls are made, but the ui is still not updated correctly. The problem seems to be related to the sequence of when the different thread are finished. For instance, if the sequence is like this:
    SwingWorker1.construct
    SwingWorker2.construct
    SwingWorker1.finished
    SwingWorker2.finished
Things go fine, but if the sequence is:
    SwingWorker1.construct
    SwingWorker1.finished
    SwingWorker2.construct
    SwingWorker2.finished
the ui-updates in SwingWorker1.finished is not done correctly.
Can anyone help me with this?

    This is the point:
In one SwingWorker thread you have 1 construct method, and 1 finish method - which are both invoked once.
Therefore you only have one opportunity to update the gui in that thread. This forces you to use many threads if you want regular updates, which I try to avoid.
    Therefore, the solution!
Have a loop in the construct method that executes the algorithm accordingly, updating the gui accordingly at regular times, maintaining just the 1 thread - becomes easier and nicer for the programmer and the JVM.
The finish method in this case is to update the gui when all iterations are finished.
There is nothing wrong with this. Just because you have a finish method that is called in the event-dispatching thread doesn't mean that all your update code must be in there.
What you MUST ensure is that ALL your update code is executed in the event-dispatching thread, that is the most important thing. After all, SwingWorker is just a helper class, not the gospel template of how to update a gui.
