  • Old external Toshiba HDD not working with Windows 7

I feel as if this problem is going to affect more and more people. Having searched the internet without luck, I felt the need to address the issue here!
I have an external 320GB Toshiba HDD, model: PX1267E-1G32 which Windows 7 (64Bit Professional) does not recognise. It does not show up in my computer and states the device is not working properly. Troubleshooting does not help, and it suggests i have the latest driver for it (version 6.1.7600.16385)
I can not find any support for this device. I have read some people trying to tackle the password protection it comes with (a separate partition with this function) but this is not an issue for me as i never use it. There are drivers on that partition as well which have no affect on windows when i have transferred them via a flash stick.
On my laptop Windows XP is installed and it finds the HDD without any problems. This has lead me to believe there is a fault with compatibility within the newer windows systems. I have tried formatting the drive, reinstalling drivers and searching for a solution. I really can not believe this has not been resolved somewhere and fear with it being an older discontinued product (Mid 2006) there will be little support for it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    hi urbancoffy,
    boah what a hell....
let's look if there is a cure.....
this device is recognized under every other system than yours, right?
if so maybe your software is misconfigured or your usb connection is bad....
    how to determine?
try other devices like an usb-stick
check bios if legacy usb support is on
check device manager (device plugged in) if it shows any information like a //dev_xxxx
if your usb port is ok
goto device manager and remove all usb devices (show hidden devices)
reboot and let the system determine the hub etc
plug in usb-hdd and see if it will be detected - keep in mind: you dont have to load a driver for a usb storage device by yourself
if the usb ports are ok and your hdd is recognized by other systems maybe it's time for a recovery of your system....

  • Problem with starting Windows when W510 in docking station

When I put in my W510 to the docking station, I have usually every second day problems with starting up Windows operation system.
I make 2 videos, where on the first 100_1060.MOV you can see starting Windows when it is frozen (first 1 minute record, I start record after about 3 minutes frozen), then I have to reboot W510 by on/off button and start ThinkVantage.
On the second video 100_1061.MOV is starting operating system after ThinkVantage process, this start is OK.

  • Running Boot Camp and Installing Windows on external Firewire HDD

    Hello,
In a few days i'll be taking delivery on an iMac i7. I would like to keep windows off of the internal HDD and let it run from an external HDD. I am told this can be done, but I cannot figure out how.
When I start Boot Camp Assistant in Applications>Utilities, it wants to create a partition in the Mac HDD.
So now it't time to be smarter than the machine. Here is what I figured could be done. I just need to know if I'm on the right track.
I hold down the "C" key on startup with the Windows DVD in the iMac. That will start the Windows DVD and start loading the OS. At that point, Windows will ask me where I want to install the OS. I select the Firewire drive, assuming windows sees it. Is this correct? If so, then what about Boot Camp, or am I way off base here.
    Thanks for any support.
    Ron

Never gonna happen, don't know where you read that FW was bootable. USB "sometimes" but you need to have the option in your BIOS setup for it. Not an option.
You can always run Mac OS from FW.
Maybe even put OS X using optical drive bay w/ SSD? and use the internal drive. But if you are so against putting Windows on your drive...
Perhaps a VM (though not for gaming, it is decent especially on the new iMacs).

  • Problems in starting windows using qemu-kvm from arch

    Hello,
I am facing problems in launching windows XP & 7 using qemu-kvm / qemu from arch. I have arch 2010.05 installed (kernel 2.6.33.4) which has kvm.ko, intel & amd modules. System is Intel Core 2 Duo 3.0GHz. Windows XP is installed on partition 0 (real) and i am trying to start windows from that real partition using qemu-kvm.
I installed qemu-kvm using pacman -S qemu-kvm. I am running modprobe kvm and modprobe kvm-intel. Also, i have added username to kvm group.
    Command -
qemu-kvm /dev/sda - I have grub menu.lst which gives me list and i am selecting windows to boot but windows does not start. I can see startup but then fails.
qemu-kvm /dev/sda1 - sda1 has windows. With this qemu-kvm just hangs at Booting from Hard-disk...
qemu-kvm -no-kvm /dev/sda - Selecting windows but this time get Windows XP activation error however i can boot same windows XP directly without any error.
For Windows 7 - I have another HDD with Windows 7 installed on partition 0 and Arch. Everytime when i try to start Windows 7 using qemu-kvm (with kvm or without kvm) it gives blue screen with STOP: 0x... If i start Windows 7 directly it works fine.
Also, i downloaded kernel 2.6.35 and built with KVM but still facing same problems. I also tried with qemu.
Can anyone help me in resolving this issue? I want to qemu-kvm Windows from real partition. Let me know if it is not possible.
Am i missing any installation/configuration steps?
I searched on google and on arch forum/wiki but was not able to resolve this issue. Let me know if you need more details.
    Thank you,
    Satish.

Do i need to create two hardware profiles in Windows or Linux?
the hardware profiles are only needed for windows , linux guest doesn't need it (unless you have compiled your own kernel without more then 1 HDD controller..  specifically for the guest)
satishk wrote:1. Can i run qemu-kvm from linux kernel with only command support. No desktop environment installed (X11)? If yes, what is the procedure?
    qemu-KVM uses SDL, NOT X11 .
added : SDL can be installed seperately, it doesn't require X11 .
you can run qemu-kvm without SDL by using a special startup parameter, -nodisplay
you have to connect with a serial connection to get to the console of the VM.
satishk wrote:2. If i restart/shutdown from quest OS that is windows in my case, is it possible to restart/shutdown the complete system (i.e. host OS
    too)?
you can do that by using a bash script to start the VM, that script can also be used to stop the host.
satishk wrote:3. Whether Windows would be able to detect USB drivers and other devices by default or i need to do anything special in qemu-kvm?
USB devices are normally detected, although you have to test how well they work.
You may have to use udev rules to prevent the host from using those devices, they can't be used by both host and guest at the same time.
Network cards will not be detected, but you can link a physical network device with qemu-kvm virtual network devices.
search for qemu documentation, it also applies to qemu-kvm.

  • What is a good 1TB external Toshiba HDD?

I'm looking to purchase a very good, robust 1TB Toshiba external HDD. Can anyone recommend one? I have read reviews that indicate there is noise, cable issues, no connectivity, short life, and generally does not work. Of the external 1TB HDDs available, is there an extremely good, reliable one? I'm interested in using one for storing files just like a USB stick so need to plug it in and out of my PC to retrieve and add files easily.

I use the OWC, http://www.macsales.com Mercury Elite Pro external drives but they may seem large to use as portable drives.
My daughter has a very small 2 TB Western Digital My Passport for Mac that she has been using for a lot of travel and works great.

  • Problems with starting Windows after Boot Camp was installed on a Win-PC

    Hi,
i have a very interesting problem for the MacComunity (haha -.-). The problem is: after I have installed Boot Camp from my Snow Leopard DVD on my Windows PC (not my iMac); I can not start the system. In the Boot Camp System where i can set the system to start with, there was only the Boot Camp System available (not Vista). However, the system installs some Vista-Updates and some Updates from Apple Software Update (iTunes 9.2, Quicktime 7, Safari 5, Airport 5, Boot Camp 3.1) on my PC.
Everything was all right but after I have restarted the System nothing happend. the System freezed when the boot-Screen (Intel Logo) appears. The Systemkeyboard was not detected. It only detects a n external apple Keyboard. There are some reactions when I press the keys, but the Monitory is frozen, anyway. What can I do?

Sounds like a lesson in there: don't wait to put OS X on an external drive that is usually off line.
Rush to a store or on-line and get a UPS of the 1500VA sort (APC RS would be nice, or SMART UPS 1000VA).
The directory of the drives could be corrupt.
I have all my equipment, modem, routers, the works, but we had a bad storm and one port on the router/modem is out (the one I used, the modem seems to be okay) and I am worried that the UPS's line filter for DSL in is also 'compromised.'
Storms and power outages can wRECK or cuase havoc.
It sounds like you need to map out bad sectors maybe (zero all in Disk Utility) perhaps. The directory, volume blocks, or even journal file, got scrambled. However, because no test can find it means - to me - it could be the "non user partitions" rather than OS X partition etc. Hence, zero the drive or just reformat it in full.
Why have you not ever with these outages, just continued to live w/o one? I wouldn't just shutdown, I would unplug if a storm approaches.
PS: SMC Reset button is under drive bay #4. Give it a 5-10 seconds depress.

  • Tomcat Servlet Security Problem? : Start Excel with NJAWIN - COMObjects

I get an exception when I start my programm as servlet , as application it works just fine (when I start it as Servlet in the internal Tomcat from JBuilder it also works fine).
Application app = new Application(Application.progID); // interfaces built with java2com for Excel
    com.develop.jawin.COMException: 8000ffff: CoCreateInstance for "{024500-00-0000-c000-000000000046}" failed

    at com.develop.jawin.DispatchPtr.<init>(Unknown Source)
    at excel2pdf.Excel._Application.<init>(_Application.java:31)
Actually Excel is started but as SYSTEM and not as my Username. Perhaps there's a problem with the security policy, I already gave all rights to catalina for my whole projekt( each directory of it). Have smb already had this problem? Any Ideas?

    Thanks for answering
In my case I think I cannot use POI because I need Excel
and a Virtual Printer , so I can convert excel files with exactly the same
format to PDF. POI is suppose better idea for creating or manipulating
OpenOffice files (they are working together with OO on file formats),
and unfortunately OpenOffice doesnt work fine with charts (I already had
this solution, openoffice-server and Uno ).
It must be smth with Tomcat-Configuration or security, because my
programm is working with the internal tomcat-server of JBuilder, and
as application too. In both cases Excel is started with my username and
not SYSTEM (my tomcat server is started as service, perhaps thats why
by starting excel from my servlet Excel is by user - SYSTEM).

  • Problems on start up with Snow Leopard after T-mobile mobile broadband inst

    Hi All
I am a new mac user, and this is my first post, so please forgive me if I am repeating this issue.
I have recently upgraded my mac os to Snow leopard.
The issue that i have is that is that I installed a new USB mobile broadband stick from T-mobile, (which I was told by T-mobile is tested) when I tried to restard the Mac Book all I got was the Apple icon and it didnt boot up.
I spoke with mac support who were very helpful. They guided me and I ended up having to re-install the original OS and then had to upgrade again to snow loepard.
I installed the USB broadband again (big mistake), thinking that i may have been something else that caused the problem but the same problem occurred.
    My question is:
Has anyone had any issues like this with T-mobile mobile broadband with their mac book?
    Kind Regards
    Jag

I received my O2 Mobile Broadband stick (Huawei E160) yesterday and I was unable to run the Connection Manager. I went to my local O2 shop with my MacBook Air where we tried other models of USB modems but to no avail. They then produced their own Mac Book and all devices installed without any errors. They checked the OS version and they were on 10.4.xx. Armed with this information I went to the Apple store where they checked that there was no problem with my MacBook Air and tried to install the device but they had the same issues. They then tried to install the device onto another MacBook Air and a MacBook Pro and it failed. The conclusion from the Apple staff is that you cannot install USB Broadband Modems if you are using the Snow Leopard OS.

This is a thread of control that has seen a lot of use, so without more information I don't think there's anything we can do from this end... what was the classpath? Was the exception thrown on the server or the client?
Also, is there a connection with iiop here? Should you post to the misc or ejb lists instead?

First, it would be better to post this message in
    weblogic.developer.interest.ejb.
If your weblogic server talkes to RemoteClient object on the other weblogic
server. You had to put those xxx_Stub.class in WEBLOGICCLASSPATH of your
    weblogic server.
For remote classloading is just for weblogic server to weblogic client. It
is not happened in weblogic server to weblogic server.
    Hope it helps.

  • Starting Windows with Boot Camp

Forgive my ignorance, I'm new to this. I think this is a simple question. I installed Boot Camp, and when I'm in Windows there's an icon at the bottom that I can click to switch to Mac. But when I'm in Mac how do I switch to Windows? There's nothing on the desktop.

To use Windows in boot-camp you need to go into *System Preferences* and choose *Startup Disk* Choose your Windows partition and click restart. The Mac has to reboot to get to windows.

  • Help with installing Windows with a RAID array

    Hi!
I hope you can help me.   When I try setting up Windows XP Home I can get as far as the press F6 section of the installation. I formatted a floppy disk and installed the Nvidia drivers just as it descibes in the manual.  However, when i'm prompted to add the Nvidia RAID drivers I get the message "The file nvraid.sys could not be found." and if I try to install the Nvidia storage control drivers I get the message "nvatabus.sys could not be found.  IF I use the nforce3 SATA RAID Driver floppy provided by MSI I actually get all the way through the formatting of the hard drive but when i'm promted to press enter to start loading the Nvidia drivers into Windows it stops and will not go any further.
I have checked the the BIOS settings and double checked the BIOS settings.  At first, I tried installing with the hard drives installed in ports #1 and #2.  I have tried connecting the two sata 120GB Maxtors to sata ports 3 and 4.
Under Integrated Peripherals, Enable RAID for SATA #3 and #4, disable port 1+2, and enable port 3+4 and vice versa for the previous setup.
I would then save changes and restart and at the nVidia RAID BIOS screen where it would usually say to press F10 to check the array setup.
I am frustrated and stumped.  Please help me...Your help is much appreciated, thank you
