Problem with tiger & ethernet

Hi,
recently upgraded my G4 867 QS with a DVD drive which worked fine. Then upgraded to Tiger which has left 2 problems:
1) every time i boot,the clock is reset to 1970 1:01:01
2) my mac fails to recognize the ethernet port.
I have zapped the PRam, removed the battery but no joy. currently running 10.4.6 as i can't get online to update it.
any help appreciated
khany.

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Sounds like your 3.6 V 1/2AA clock battery is close to death. You can find them at Radio Shack. Product 23-026 in the U.S. Not sure if it is the same England.

  • Problems with Tiger Install

Previously having OS 10.2, I tried to install 10.4 from an installation disc over 10.2, and it failed to install. After failing to install, the computer made me restart, and now it goes to a screen giving an error about a Mac OS 10.4 and 10.5 Driver. The Computer can't find drivers for 10.4 and 10.5. I cannot boot from an Apple I-care disc, the machine tries to boot into an OS, but there is a question mark, instead of an OS Icon in the middle of the screen, and then shortly after comes the error message. The machine locks up.
I thought maybee the problem was intalling OS10.4 as an update, because there was a gap between version previously installed and the new one, but the installation guide says OS 10.2 or later is updatable.
    Please Help.

    Hi Brandon,
If you are not able to start up from your installation DVD there might be a problem with your DVD drive.
If this is the case then there are two things you might do:
1- (and most obvious) take your Mac in for repair.
2- Fire Wire Target Disk Mode... (For this option you will need a second Mac)
    - Target Disk Mode will basically turn your iMac into an external HD, by doing this you will be able to use a second Mac with a working disc drive to start up from the Tiger DVD and then install it on your iMac.
If you are going to do this it is important that no other FireWire devices are connected to either of the computers.
How to start your iMac in Target Disk Mode: Start up the computer and immediately press and hold down the T key until the FireWire icon appears.
Once you have done this connect it to the second Mac (with FireWire)
Now insert the Tiger DVD in the second Mac, when the disk appears on the Desktop open it and double click on "install"
A window with a restart button will appear... click and restart (there will be no need to hold the "c" key.
Once the computer has started up from the Tiger DVD you need to find UTILITIES or TOOLS (i can remember the exact name) on the top bar
Click on it and open Disk Utility then follow the steps of my previous post.
Make sure that you have selected the correct HD to erase and install (it will not be the first one on the list)
    Good Luck.

  • IMac won't burn cds...Problem with Tiger?

I used to have Panther and I would occasionally get error messages when trying to burn cds, mostly the buffer has been underrun. I upgraded to tiger and the problem worsened and I began getting other error message. Mostly "the device failed to calibrate the laser power needed for this media" sometimes it just spits out the cd without an error message. I have a warrantly with Fry's. They have had my computer for over 3 months and keep claming that there is no problem with my comptuer, even though they have seen the error (what idiots!) ..
Their recent claim is that it is a software issue, and that the superdrive in the imac is not compatible with tiger, and I need to downgrade to my original OS. I find this very hard to believe. WHy would apple come out with an OS that is not compatible with the superdrive??
Keep in mind, everybody at Fry's seems to no NOTHING about Macs...This is the last time I buy an Apple from there!!
Does anybody know anything about this issue??

i have almost the same problem, i have an imac G5, i jus purchased it last october, i use it to burn stuff all the time and nothing happens, until like a couple of dayz ago.. i tried to burn a cd and it ddnt work, i uninstalled toast and installed it again, restarted my computer but it still ddnt work.. but when i burnt a DVD it worked, but it cant burn cds. i have no idea why this is happening. it has never happened before...helllllllpppppppppppppppppp please because i really need to use it.....

  • Has anyone else had problems with nForce ethernet drivers 3.13 and abo

Hi, I installed the previous version of the nForce unified drivers (2.03) and I have had problems with the latest version of the unified drivers also (2.41). These both have ethernet drivers "3.13 (WHQL) + TOT .NVU"
They seem to be the ethernet drivers fault. If I install one of the latest versions of the unified drivers, windows does not boot up, it just hangs at windows logo. ?(
If I remove the ethernet cards drivers using safe Mode, the system will boot up fine. I also have to re-install older versions of the ethernet drivers to get the system to boot.
I am using the K7N2 motherboard with onboard ethernet.
Any reasons/fixes would be great , cheers  :]

  • Problem with two ethernet ports?

There is little consistency to this, but I'm wondering if anyone else has a similar problem. I upgraded to 10.6 on my Mac Pro. I have two ethernet connections which run concurrently in my network setup - one internally addressed, using a manual IP with DHCP, the other an external address with a static IP. On an inconsistent basis, opening pages in Safari will result in failures because I am apparently not connected to the internet, despite the fact that I am - Mail continues to work fine, server connections remain, etc., etc. The only way to get Safari to work again is to disable one of the ethernet ports. Reenabling it after I have successfully made a Safari connection does not then break the connection again - it keeps running for quite a while. The problem seems to become more apparent when I open a selected group of links into tabs - some will be successful, most will fail. Ideas?

Snoop Dogg thanks for the reply.
Port ONE was set to auto DNS. I did exactly as you suggested, I even tried a to do a manual ip address, etc but no luck. What finally worked is, I moved the port one cable to port two (which was empty) and bingo it worked.
It seems that snow leopard may have some issues with dual ethernet port machines, but why port two worked and port one didn't is beyond me. I will try to reverse it back to port one and see what happens. Fortunately I don't need two port at this point.
    Cheers, Terry.

  • Cannot Load Leopard due to Historic Unresolved Problem with Tiger.....

When I installed Tiger some years ago, my computer (iMac) refused to shut down normally. I tried many times to get an answer from Apple without results. Since then I have had to shut down by holding the start button. OK. Inconvenient but it worked. Until I tried to install Leopard. Since Leopard requires a Restart and I cannot Restart from the menu I cannot install it. I left messages on Apple's Support e-mail which promises to get back in 48 hours. This was a week ago and I still have not heard from Apple Support. Any thoughts about resolving this issue?

I solved the problem by reinstalling Tiger. Followed by purchasing a new iMac 20-inch, with Leopard. Am selling the older iMac.
Excellent move. The general rule is to never install any software at all on a computer that is not working properly. At best it will still be broken, at worst it will die completely
I am assuming your old Tiger was an upgrade from an earlier system and not an install on a blank HD. Usually that kind of problem requires an erase (full, not quick) and install and then a careful migration from the backup, one program at a time, in case the problem is related to an old piece of SW.

  • A login problem with Tiger

    Hello,
My computer recently has been holding up really fine, until yesterday.
I was playing around with the demo version NASCAR Racing 2003 Season, when all of a sudden the game began to freeze up and then crashed. After a few minutes, the dock just froze when I tried to reopen the game, preventing me from opening any applications nor shutting down my Mac. Therefore, I forcefully shut down my computer after a few attempts to restarting from the Apple Menu.
When I turned on my Macbook, the problem became much more serious. When I logged onto my account, nothing happened. All I got was the pointer and the desktop.
I tried to solve the problem by running Disk Utility, repairing the disk permissions, but the nothing fixed the problem.
Now I need a solution without having to reinstall Tiger on my Macbook.
    Any solution is welcome.
    Regards,
    Wampus Cat

Never install something like that without first making a full backup (clone) of your system on either an external or (if you have a desktop computer) an extra internal drive. If you had done that someone could say "just boot up your backup and clone it back it your primary drive". I'm not saying this to make you feel bad but as "baltwo" has pointed out, you don't have any good alternatives outside of going through the whole re-install/reconfigure thing. Next time.....

  • Problems with Tiger Server SSL after attempting to update cert

I have been getting an error message saying that my SSL is self-signed even though it is a GeoTrust cert.
I deleted the certificate that was there and had my cert re-issued in order to try to remedy this problem and now my SSL site prevents the server's Web services from starting.
The error I am getting from log says:

  • TV out low contrast problem with Tiger

I just recently upgraded to Tiger and went straight from 10.3.9 to 10.4.5.
My mini-DVI to TV adapter has always worked perfectly before, but now the display on my TV is very dim, with extremely low contrast and brightness. The TV is recognised correctly and all the settings, color profiles etc. are correct.
I have verified that this is strictly a software issue as booting from 10.3.9 fixes the problem, and the output to TV is bright and beautiful once again.
I've searched, but found no mention of this particular problem anywhere. I would love to find a solution as the TV out from the PowerBook is basically broke, and dragging the external FW drive to the TV to boot from 10.3.9 is not a practical option.

  • Problems with my Ethernet wire/port

    Hi,
I took my ibook with me on x-mas vacation ( didn't use it, security reasons only) and when I got home and plugged in the ethernet wire and tried logging onto the internet it said I had no connection. I called my server and they said the internet was getting through, the problem was with my wire. So I went and bought a new wire and the internet worked, but if I moved the wire at all it would disconnect. Could my port be damaged?? Or is the wire connection to small? (It's for PC's) There was never any problems before, and I am worried I some how damaged it on my journey. How can I tell if something is broken, it all looks fine, but the wire moves up and down in the port and causes the internet to disconnect. What can be done to fix it if it's broken? Help, I am worried about my computer

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
    Thank you very much
If you would clarify....when you started having
problems reading the mobile disk on your system, you
tested it on another system (s) and it operated
    normally?
Yes, correct. I had been using the mobile disk on my system regularly. When it did not get recognized, I successfully tried to open that specific mobile disk using a PC and another Mac.
In the event that it's a usb-related problem, you
might try resetting your power management unit (PMU)
    by following the directions at
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
This sometimes, but not always, helps where a USB
issue is power-related. Won't hurt in any event.
Thank you very much for the tip, I'll try it out and see what happens.

  • Problems with Tiger on my ibook

Installed Tiger mostly successfully, but a few problems:
    1. Although Word works, it crashes a lot and I cannot open any other Office applications (powerpoint, excel)
    2. When download files from internet or email cannot open them easily with Word or other applications

    Thanks for any tips!!!

    1. You haven't stated which version of Office you are using. Click here and check that you have the latest update for Office.
    2. See (1).
    3. You need to provide more information as to the meaning of "totally reset the airport connection data". If the connection is on and the power is suddenly lost, you will lose the airport connection/network and will have to re-establish it upon startup. This is the way it works.
