Problem with Time Machine or ext HDD?

I am using a Western Digital Firewire800 ext HDD for my Time Machine back ups. In the past the ext HDD will turn on by itself when my iMac is turned on and the light remains on. Of late I notice sometimes the light turns off and the ext HDD icon on the desktop disappears. I would need to press the power button on the HDD for the light to come back on and the desktop icon to re-appear.
More importantly, in the past Time Machine will auto back up every one hour. It no longer does that. I made an effort to pay close attention yesterday. TM said that the next back up was scheduled for 2.54pm. When it was 2.54pm, even though the ext HDD light was on & the desktop icon was there, TM did not to an auto backup. And the wierd thing is, when I went into TM properties, it now said that the next back up was scheduled for 3.54pm as though it had already done a back up at 2.54pm.
I had to do a manual backup. Do you think something is wrong with my ext HDD or with TM? I still have ample space in my ext HDD btw. Thanks in advance!

It's hard to tell whether it's the drive, the connections, or something in Time Machine.
The 2:54 backup may have been "delayed," due to the drive not being available. See #A1 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), for a handy widget that will display the backup messages from your logs.
See if there was a backup attempt at that time; if there's such a message, that's the reason.
If so, check all the connections to be sure they're snug and secure. Try a "full reset" of Time Machine, per #A4 there. If that doesn't help, try repairing the backups, per #A5 in Troubleshooting.
If still no help, try removing the check from the +Put the hard disk(s) to sleep . . .+ box in +System Preferences > Energy Saver.+ Not all drives respond to that setting, and some WDs have a proprietary "spin down" feature that's near-impossible to remove, but it's worth a try.

  • Another problem with Time Machine

This is the second time I have experienced the following problem with Time Machine. After 2 months of backups it gets to a point where backups fail and I cannot enter time machine. In each instance I have only used 110GB of the 500GB space.
Is there a better solution to fixing this problem than deleting the sparsebundle? That seems to be the only way to get it to back up again.

    backup is failing again:

  • Problems with Time machine caused by removing PKCS11.log?

I haven't yet found a solution to my Time Machine no longer backing up: "while an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk"
I requested help before, but so far nobody could help me solve this problem!
I noticed that I removed, in a file clean up, a log file: PKCS11.log."
I still have this file in the Trash but can not restore this file from Trash to its original location because I don't know its original location. The command" restore", or "put back" does not figure in the menu of Trash.
It can be that the removal of this log file causes the back up problem in Time Machine?
As you will notice from the above, I know very little about software and subjects like this and hope that somebody can help me to get Time Machine backing up again.
    Thanks on beforehand!

  • Problem with Time Machine, running Snow Leopard

    Hi all,
Last week I had a new hard drive fitted into my iMac 8,1, after which Snow Leopard was reloaded (10.6.3 from the disc, updated to 10.6.8), followed by the restoration of data via Time Machine from my external hard drive. Whilst my Mac is now running beautifully, I am having problems backing up with Time Machine.
When I run a backup, it prepares about 100,000 items, then starts to backup, usually about 650mb. It crawls along in kb until it gets to about 1mb, then jumps quickly to the end, but then it adds extra mb on the end. Then it suddenly starts again "preparing x items....." and off it goes again.
I have tried repairing the backup disc, and it appears to be ok. I even erased it and started again. Time Machine did a full backup (139gb) in about 2 hours, then immediately added another 640mb at the end - strange, but I do at least have a full backup from yesterday. But now, everytime I run backup, it looks for the same sort of figure (650-700mb) and then goes round in circles.
Any help would be very much appreciated!
    Thanks, David

    Hi Eric
Thank you for your reply.  Here are the screenshots for each change:
Having prepared about 95,000 items, the backup of 612mb begins
14 minutes later a message appears
Another 3 minutes and another message. You will see from this screenshot that the backup figure has changed to 613.1mb
Another 30 seconds and it all begins again....
And finally, 7 more minutes pass, another 96,000 items are prepared, and another 604.8mb backup begins.
I might add, that between posting this morning, and your reply, I also went into disk utility, chose the top leve of the external drive, clicked on the partition tab, charged current to 1 partition, renamed the drive, erased it, and did a full back up of 139GB. After 137GB it started again, looked for 602mb, backed them up and finished the backup, which is why TM states that the last back up was at 18:16 today.
    Thanks again
    David

  • Problem with Time Machine back up

    Hello all,
Grateful for anyone's help with this issue.
    Firstly, a summary of specs:
    Mac OS X 10.7.
    Late 2007 Macbook 13inch
External hard drive - LaCie 1TB D2 Quaddra
Issue - When trying to back up my 2007 Macbook it fails! When I back up my 2011 MacBook Pro (to the same external hard disk) it works fine!
I have reviewed a whole load of advice on here, some I am able to understand others that I unable too! Sorry! Now stuck so thought I would post on here in the hope sometime might be able to give me some advice.
I have downloaded a widget which helped me view the error message details (found that advice on the excellent Pondini website).
    The error message was:
    Starting standard backup
    Backing up to: /Volumes/Mike/Backups.backupdb
Backup content size: 136.3 GB excluded items size: 8.2 GB for volume Macintosh HD

Copied 9 files (774 KB) from volume Macintosh HD.
    Copy stage failed with error:11
    Backup failed with error: 11
To be honest this is pretty much gooblygook to me! But I did try to locate the file that was causing the problem (Address Book) and excluded it from the Time Machine backup, I then received this error message:
    Starting standard backup
    Backing up to: /Volumes/Mike/Backups.backupdb
Backup content size: 136.3 GB excluded items size: 8.3 GB for volume Macintosh HD

Copied 12 files (2.7 MB) from volume Macintosh HD.

So I then excluded miCoach, but it failed again! This time with this message:

Backup content size: 136.3 GB excluded items size: 8.3 GB for volume Macintosh HD

So I excluded Adobe Flash Player, and....failed again, this time blaming the Calculator
    Starting standard backup

The way this is going I will not have any information left to back up!!
    Any advice warmly received.

We don't know exactly what error (-47) means.  Apple used to publish lists of error code, many years ago, before OSX, but very few now.  It's clearly something to do with the file named, but just what isn't clear.
But we do know that SrcErr:NO means the error is not on the "source" -- ie, your Mac.  It seems to be a problem writing the file to the TM drive.
So first, if you haven't yet, run Repair Disk on that TM partition, just to be sure it's ok.
Also, be sure the disk has either the GUID (preferred) or APM partition map scheme.  Click the top line in Disk Utility's sidebar, and that will be shown at the lower right.  If it's MBR (Master Boot Record), that's a Windows setup, and sometimes doesn't work well with Time Machine, especially if there are multiple partitions.
Prior to OSX, error -47 meant the file was busy.  If that's still true, something may be trying to access it while it's being written.  If you're running any anti-virus apps on that Mac, or anything else that might be looking at the backup drive, exclude the TM drive from it, or, better, turn it off.  Antivirus apps can interfere with TM backups -- some can even damage them.

  • Problems with Time Machine restore

Hi - am hoping someone can help me.
My laptop got stolen last week and I bought a new one yesterday. The old one was kind of messy - I'd had it for a while and had been living with some weird error messages and that sort of thing - so I only wanted to transfer certain files - photos, music, movies and a few documents - to the new one from Time Machine via an external hard drive.
I set up as a new user and chose to use Migration Assistant to transfer the files afterwards. It seemed to work fine but on closer inspection no files created after 2008 (ie any new music or photos) transferred. It's the photos I'm mostly worried about as I used Senuti on my iPod to recover the music and the video files were saved to the same external hard drive Time Machine was using but seem to be accessible. When I 'browse other Time Machine disks' and go into the last backup the Pictures folder has the little red minus/stop symbol on it, so I'm thinking it might be a permissions issue? I've tried restoring that folder but nothing changes.
I'm wondering if I need to go back to migration assistant and start again but transferring everything this time? Will that even make a difference? Am hoping the files aren't lost forever (I'm a mum)!
Please don't tell me how hopeless I am at all this or get narky - I know it and I'm already in a world of misery about the stolen mac and missing pics...

I recently had to do a restore all with time machine. I made sure everything was backed up before hand and ran the Leopard install disk. Went to utilities and did a restore all from time machine backup with no problem. Chose the date I wanted of March 24, 2009 and began running the restore which took about 2 hours. When everything came back up it seemed to have restored no problem but it used one of my backups from a year ago.
Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Why do you think it restored the wrong backup?

  • Problem with Time Machine Backup or Maybe Not Time Machine

The problem manifests after a Time Machine backup.
    I have an iMac 24-inch, Early 2008. iMac 8,1
Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM.
Last week I purchased two  4-Terabyte G-technology G-Drives. Each drive is equip with FireWire 800 and USB 3.0/2.0. In general use they seem to work fine on the iMac.
I designated one drive as a Time Machine Volume. This is where the problem happens.
Time Machine will do the initial backup just fine. Then it runs once per hour with no problem. Intermittently however, Time Machine will fail and report :
“Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to “hard disk name”.
Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder.”
Interestingly enough if I try to open a folder on the Time Machine volume using the Finder I get:
“The operation can’t be completed. An unexpected error occurred (error code -50).
If I try to eject the volume I get the irksome “Cannot eject volume because it’s currently in use by one or more programs.”
To resolve this I’ve tried everything, from the banal verifying permissions, to swapping the two G-Drives around, swapping out all the cables, etc.. When the error occurs I go into the shell and check with lsof and always find no software apparently holding or using that volume.
    Very frustrating
I can force eject the volume, then remount the volume and things are back to normal. Same with restarting.
This happened under OS X Mountain Lion and is now happening under a clean install of Mavericks.
I thought that even though I don’t see any MDS  related processes using the drive, it might be spotlight, so I told spotlight not to index the volume. Problem still happens.
I’ve found that one person had almost this exact same problem at:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4756742
His solution turned out to be replacing the G-Drive with another brand new G-Drive.
Unfortunately, I cannot return the drives to the Apple store because the boxes were tossed out. I also don’t relish trying to explain that the drives work just fine until some glitch that occurs either just before or just after a Time Machine backup.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

You can also contact G-Drive while the drives are under warranty (one year I believe).
I have the same problem using Time Machine with the 2T G-Drive and my MacBook Pro. G-Tech emailed me a Firmware Update Utility app and, when that didn't solve the error message problem, they sent me a replacement drive and new cables, twice. The problem persisted; I get one or two backups each day and then the error message. I also can't copy anything to the drive and have to force eject it, so G-Tech suggested I see how well it worked with the USB cable.
Time Machine works flawlessly with the USB cable and the G-Drive, so G-Tech suggested it is a problem with my Firewire 800 port. I worked with Apple Care over the phone, doing all the tests suggested in Eric's post - testing with Disk Utility, Time Machines interface with my User Accounts, the Operating System, then resetting Time Machine, etc. and then I took it to the Genius Bar so they could run the tests themselves. All looked like it should be fine (but they were using a 1T G-Drive and all testing was done within 30 minutes)...when I got home, after two good backups, I got the error message again.
Apple Care finally suggested I make a Genius Bar appointment and sit at the store working with my MacBook, the G-Drive and Time Machine running until I got the error message, to prove the only thing left that could possibly be the cause of the problem, is the port.  I did this last Wednesday.
It is 9 days later and I got my computer back this afternoon...the logic board was replaced because the Firewire 800 port is attached to it...I got my first Time Machine back up at 5:34pm...and the error message again at 7:34pm.
The only solution, it seems, is to use the USB cable instead of Firewire. USB and Thunderbolt seem to be the direction Apple is taking, which is why so many people have been posting about this problem, here and elsewhere, with no real solutions from Apple. See this article:  http://www.infoworld.com/t/mac-laptop/how-cope-the-end-of-firewire-205957
I hope the USB works for you too.

  • Problems with Time Machine Restore all

I recently had to do a restore all with time machine. I made sure everything was backed up before hand and ran the Leopard install disk. Went to utilities and did a restore all from time machine backup with no problem. Chose the date I wanted of March 24, 2009 and began running the restore which took about 2 hours. When everything came back up it seemed to have restored no problem but it used one of my backups from a year ago. I tried running a restore all again choosing a different date of March 23, 2009 and it keeps restoring to the random backup from a year ago. Has anyone else had a problem like this?

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Why do you think it restored the wrong backup?

  • Problem with Time Machine backup

    Hi all,
i've been really excited about Lion and managed to get it and install it in under 50 minutes!
It works great, even with my Office:Mac software, antivirus software and so on, fantastic considering other people have had issues.
The one issue I seem to have is Lion working with its own application! Namely Time Machine!
    I have a 3Tb Western Digital My Book Live NAS which I bought a few weeks ago. I only use it for backing up my Macbook Pro and my Wifes Macbook and its been faultless with Time Machine, however when I try and continue running this with Lion I get an error saying;
The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features
From what I can find on the web this seems to be something to do with the NAS as apposed to Time Machine however I would have thought this would have been addressed before people like myself had the problem - After all i'm sure everyone will agree, back-ups are extremely important!
If anyone has any suggestions how I can fix this I would be greatful
    Matt

    HI all,
wow, thanks for all the fast replies, at least it seems i'm not the only one having these issues.
I contacted apple support about this and there suggestion was to connect the disc up to my laptop and run diagnostics on it, however as its a NAS I only have an ethernet connection so that makes it difficult to connect directly. As it is I also logged a call with Western Digital and they have come back to me with a similar comment that Alex Lui has made in this discussion, namely that it is going to be fixed but not until August time.
I've managed to sort out my back-ups all be it using Western Digitals WD Anywhere Backup software which does make me feel a little bit safer (even though its having to back up everything and says that will take approx 34 hours!)
I'd have hoped Apple would have seen this coming, especially as I would guess its not only Western Digital drives that have this incompatability, however I suppose they were up to their eyebrows with other stuff they had to sort out before they could release Lion.

  • Video Problems with Time Machine

I have a Mac Mini G5 with 1 GB RAM and 23" Cinema HD display. At highest resolution, Time Machine has problem with displays. The graphic is distorted and constantly flickering.
When I drop the resolution from Millions color to Thousands color, the graphic display fine and Time Machine works fine.
What is causing this display issue? Is it the onboard video card? How do I permanently fix this problem so that I can take full advantage of my Mini?
    Thanks,
    Simon

Power Mac G5,PowerPC G5, 2.3 GHz, Memory: 4.5 GB, Geforce 6600 video, 30 inch Cinema display and having same issue with Time Machine video flickering and jumping about. "Fixed" by changing to thousands of colors on display but this is not an acceptable solution. Strange thing is that it has worked/looked ok for a little while. Help anyone?
Additionally, InDesign CS2 does NOT work with Leopard on my machine. Crashes when save as or export is used.

  • Interesting problem with Time Machine and Spotlight

As I was searching for spotlight problems in time machine, I came across many discussions about the indexing and whether or not to include your external Time Machine back up drive. My drive has always been indexed and one day when I plugged it in, it ran a quick index which hadn't happened before. I put it in the Spotlight Privacy Tab in Preferences not really knowing what I was doing, and after that whenever I opened Time Machine I couldn't search for files on my external HD - it just wouldn't find them even though I could navigate backward without using spotlight and find the specific files myself.
Thinking all I needed to do was take my Time Machine drive out of the privacy tab, I did so but am still encountering the same problem. Although - it seems to be a little bit better. Say I have a file on my desktop labeled "First Draft" - I backup TM, delete the file from my main comp, then back up TM again to simulate a lost file over time. I search in spotlight "First Draft" click the back arrow and am easily taken to my missing file - exactly how TM should work.
However, I have a folder named "First Draft" that I backed up a while ago, deleted, and now replaced with a new folder with the same name but with different files in them, then Time Machine can only seem to find my current folder. I search "First Draft" in spotlight in TM and then click back, but it can't seem to find it - it just goes back to the first backup date with a blank window. I know it's there because when I take off the search words and navigate through a certain day, I can see the files. Does anyone else have this problem? It's such a detailed problem - sorry it took a long time to explain. I hope you understand my problem. Thanks for your time!

Nevermind - what's even stranger is that right after I posted this - it fixed itself. Wow I hate when that happens...

  • Problem with Time Machine/Finder not finding and (keeping) remote drive

I have a Mac Pro and hooked 2 Western Digital My Book 750GB drives via Firewire onto it to use as my time machine backup for the two MBP's in the house.
The problem I run into may be more network related than Time Machine related. I have the file sharing turned on in Mac OS 10.5.2. I am able to select Mac Pro in Finder on each MBP and then under that select my Time Machine drive. Then within Time Machine I can select the My Book as my Time Machine drive. At this point I have no problem using Time Machine.
Where the problem occurs is if I use Finder to browse other drives such as an Internal Drive I have in my MBP or my Mac Mini's drive it no longer can find the Time Machine drive. It just is like it loses sight of it somehow. All I need to do is once again go to Finder/Mac Pro and then select the specific Time Machine drive and then Time Machine is fine again.
How can I get around this? It seems i have to make some type of permanent logon or so to this drive.

    1. try plugging in directly (think you did this already)
    2. try a different cable - switch to the one you know works.
    3. try a different port on the case.
    4. does the faulty one power up at all? can you hear the drive spinning?
    5. try switching to the good power adapter if you are not seeing action under #4.
there may also be a reset button on the board or case.
if these are not working, then the bridgeboard has died in the case. there is a board that the drive plugs into that gives you the firewire, usb connections, etc. the drive likely hasn't failed, you just need a new bridgeboard or case, as I doubt maxtor will sell you just that part. the drive can be pulled & put into another case.
check out macsales.com if you need a new case.

  • Problems with Time machine after bootcamp Win7

    Hi everyone,
I have been wrestling with this problem for a few days now, been researching online and trying a majority of solutions I ran across..
Here is what I did to screw it up:
I installed Windows 7 using Boot camp.. Which actually works out pretty good..
This is when I noticed that my time machine program was going wrong:
When I keep getting that error saying unable to back up, which doesn't tell me anything..
I followed the solutions that the Utility program says.. Format my external hard drive.. So I was hoping to start anew with it, kissed about a year worth of backups good bye..
Which sadly solved nothing except for the freezing of time machine at 45.5GB, now it just says it fails after doing 8GB.. Both computer and external hard drive checks out OK by the Utility program.
This is what I found on my system.log :
    mds[32]: (/Volumes/Untitled/.Spotlight-V100/Store-V1/Stores/DEB63C2D-2705-44E5-86F2-2D3E B1C2E65F)(Error) IndexCI in bt_shadowTrie:read err: 5
    mds[32]: (/Volumes/Untitled/.Spotlight-V100/Store-V1/Stores/DEB63C2D-2705-44E5-86F2-2D3E B1C2E65F)(Error) IndexCI in _indexShadowBulk:indexShadowFiles error: 5, live.0.mds[32]: (/Volumes/Untitled/.Spotlight-V100/Store-V1/Stores/DEB63C2D-2705-44E5-86F2-2D3E B1C2E65F)(Error) IndexCI in _ContentIndexSyncIndexBulk:indexShadowAndCommitBulk error:5
I try looking it up,but its a mystery in it's self.. I try reformatting the external HDD and starting all over, and it keeps coming up.. What does this cryptic message mean? How can resolve this issue so I can start getting my backuping underway?
    Thank you for any replies

Is your Time Machine disk named "Untitled"? There's something wrong with the (hidden) Spotlight index on the "Untitled" drive.
The easiest (and, fortunately, most likely) way to fix that is to go to System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy, and add the Untitled volume to the exclusion list temporarily.
Then try another backup. If it runs ok, go back and remove the exclusion. That will re-index the drive "from scratch" and likely fix whatever's corrupted.
