Problem with USB/External-HDD/etc... not writing?

Hello...
Recently I've been having a problem with my USB, and external harddrive. It seems that for some reason when I copy files to the device, they do not write. If I go and view the device contents on another PC, my files aren't there, but on this PC they are.
The only way that they will copy is if I right click and select "Safely Remove Drive."
I never used to have to do this; Is there a way to make files auto write?

    You are still under warranty and/or have AppleCare.  Call them.  Let them deal w/it.

  • Problem with USB External Hard Disk Drive

    I have similar problem with hard disk MK6025GAS in Sweex casing connected via USB as Raistlfiren in this post but I am not sure if it has something to do with kernel. The problem is that when I plug the hard disk via USB it is not even shown with in /dev/ or by fdisk -l. I had similar problems with the drive before but it was always shown in /dev.
    I got same output from dmesg as Raistlfiren in the post before

    From the beginning I though and I still think that the partition table is screwed up but the programs like TestDisk and fixdisktable work only with disks shown in /dev/

    The only thing I understand from these logs is that the disk is blocked, therefore not listed in /dev.
    Assuming the newer kernel problems I could try to use some older live linux CD to see if that would work. I am also thinking of connecting this hard drive directly to my laptop, using live linux CD and maybe check the output of hdparm. Is there anything else I could check or try?

    I believe the problem is not system dependent. I have dual boot with windows and there the disk has also problems. However, I do have Arch32 with Kernel 2.6.30, using Gnome. hal and dbus are also running.
    I did not tried to connect the disk to the computer directly, I will try it today.
    Yesterday I have used SystemRescueCD 0.4.1 with Kernel 2.6.22. I wanted to see if it will be recognized by the system and placed in /dev/. Yes it was. This means that the problem highlighted in Gentoo forum can be true, but it doesn't solve my problem. I have tried to connect the drive several times to Arch and it was not shown in /dev/sd*, in SystemRescueCD it was placed as /dev/sdb. Now I am sure that the partition table is screwed up.
    So I have started to play with the drive in SystemRescueCD with TestDisk and FixDiskTable but without success.

    As I have mentioned I will try to connect the disk directly to the computer and see what will happen.

  • Problems with seagate external hdd

    I have a Seagate 3TB external HDD attached to my iMac via a Firewire 800 cable. I have the latest software running (Yosemite 10.10.3) but the Mac no longer shows the HDD in finder, I can see it in disk utility but when i come to verify or repair the disk i get this message
    " Error: Partition map check failed because no slices were found" I also get this message:
    Verifying volume “Seagate External Drive”Verifying file system.Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.Invalid B-tree node sizeThe volume Seagate External Drive could not be verified completely.File system check exit code is 8.Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Click Repair Disk.

  • Problems with 1TB external HDD

    I have two external HDD, one a LaCie 2TB and one a Maxtor Basics 1.5TB. Both devices come formatted as FAT32. I have tried reformatting using Disk Utility to Mac OS Extended but the process fails on both devices, whichever of my iMac I use. The only thing I can then do is re-partition them as FAT32 again.
    Equally frustrating, the devices are not visible when I try to access them from other machines on the network whereas other drives connected to the same machine are fully visible.
    Is there a size limit for formatting using Mac OS Extended or something?
    Any suggestions of how I might at least get them visible for sharing across the network - even if they have to stay as FAT32 drives?

  • Problems with my External HDD. Loosing space?

    I am new to Mac.
    I just bought a new iMac, and a 2 TB WD My Passport external HDD where I am backing up all my files collected from previous works done under Windows.
    In the 2 TB HDD I have created 3 folders: one has 546 GB, another has 200 GB, and the third 0,2 GB (200 MB).
    So the total should be something like 800 GB, and therefore the available space in the HDD should be in the range of 1,2 TB.
    But when I look in Properties, it tells me that the Used space is 1,3 TB, and that the Available Space is 0,7 TB.
    How can this be?
    I have looked into another articles and all of them say that I should not have to Defrag (I had that doubt because I copied info into the HDD and then I deleted it, and so it could be marked as used).
    So, if that is not the case, what can be happening?
    What should I do to recover the rest of the space?

  • Problems with usb / sd removable devices (not/badly copying)

    Hi everybody
    the problem is when I plug an usb stick or a SD card, all with FAT32 fs, GNOME (I use gnome-shell) asks me if I want to mount and open the device.
    so, it loads properly and when it's open I can do all the things you are supposed to do with them.
    The issue first appaired when I copied some pics to an SD card. It appaired the progress bar saying it completed the copy process.
    So I umounted the device and removed it. Some other people said that actually there weren't any files in the SD card.
    Supposing it was bad/corrupted fs I formatted the card and put back the images there. Same issue. I was starting to think the SD card was damaged
    until I had the same problem while copying music to my phone (via USB cable).
    I noticed it created all the files but didn't store any actual data (e.g. size of files was always 0 byte) or even didn't do anything (neither created the file) sometimes.
    Searching the web I found that it wasn't syncing - so they told me to do the sync command on the shell - nothing solved.
    So as I read on the wiki [fstab], I mounted the devices with options "sync,flush", which in fact solved the problem.
    [Actually I later found that it works even without the flush option, just with the sync option]
    Doing so I solved the problem and could copy all the data to the devices.
    What I want to know is: how can I say to GNOME (or anyother GNOME uses to mount devices) "well, whenever I put a removable device, mount it with the sync option" ?

    Verify the discs in the disc utility and see if that works. It'll probably take an hour or so cos the disc utility's performance has been less than favorable.
    Try this: Turn off the computer, disconnect the drives, then restart the computer. Now, re-connect the drives while the computer is running, let them mount and see if you can eject them. One would assume it is a permissions issue, however, with the multitude of glitches appearing with ext drives and USB devices in Leopard it's hard to assume anything.

  • Problem with defaultCommand - buttons, links, etc not working

    Hi,
    I've used the defaultCommand attribute on a number of pages in an application, and have noticed a serious problem :
    After hitting enter, if no navigation occurs (i.e. only PPR), nothing on the page works anymore - no buttons, links, etc.
    Is this a known issue? If so, is there a way to fix this?
    Also, if an inputTextField has a f:validateLongRange tag, and the user enters an invalid value (i.e. text, or something out of range), when enter is pressed the entire page disappears, and I'm left with only the validator's error message. I know I could work around this by performing my own validation, but that is less than ideal.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

  • Problems with USB external drive attached to time capsule

    Hi,
    I bought a WD 1 TB my book as a supplemental backup drive, as I've pretty much maxed out the space in my 500 GB TC with backups form two macbooks. It's attached to the TC via the USB 2.0. For the first few months everything worked fine. Now suddenly neither machine can access the WD drive. It shows up in the Aiport utility but not in the finder. When I plug it directly into one of the macbooks it accesses fine, but I bought it specifically to use as additional network backup drive.
    Where have I gone wrong? I updated the firmware for the WD drive, and everything appears fine on the TC and the macbooks. I poked around on the forums and found many a complaint about the WD drives, but I couldn't find a solution to my particular problem.
    Any ideas?

    The first thing to try is a nice long power cycle of the network if you have not already done this.
    Power everything down, order is not important. Wait 5-10 minutes.
    Start the modem first and let it run 4-5 minutes by itself. Then start the next device connected to the modem the same way. Keep powering up each device the same way until all devices are powered on.
    Any help?
    If no luck, the next thing to try is connect the WD drive directly to your computer and "Verify Disk" using Disk Utility.
    Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
    Then click "Repair disk"
    If indicated, "Repair Permissions" on the disk.
    Eject the disk and then you'll have to do the power cycle all over again and plug the device back into the USB port on the Time Capsule.

  • Format/cross-compatibility problems with Seagate External HDD

    I recently bought a MacBook Pro (July 08) and as soon as I took it out of the box and set it up, went to plug in my little 120GB Seagate HDD to dump the files onto my new Mac, and received the query "Do you wish to format HDD?" Of course I clicked 'NO', and ejected the drive from the Mac. I went to plug it back into my old PC (where it had worked moments before) and received the same query as on the Mac, plus, when I went into properties, found that the drive was no longer FAT32 but RAW. I now find myself at wit's end trying to rescue the 4 years' of data on the drive. I have tried running disk utility on Mac where it can see it still as FAT32, but can't mount it or repair it, and it's still in RAW format when connected to PCs. Anybody out there with some ideas?

  • Problems with an external hard drive (not Time Machine related)

    First, I'll clarify that I'm using an internal hard drive inside an external enclosure, incase that makes a difference to my problem.
    I got this drive to store my music on, since I've run out of room on my main hard drive. I've transfered all my music to it, and it's been working fine, but now it seems that any program that tries to access files on the drive will freeze. Whether it's trying to play a song in iTunes or copying files from one drive to another. And when iTunes freezes from this, a simple Force Quit wont work. The window closes, and I can no longer access the program, but it still appears open on the dock and prevents me from being able to shut down the computer properly.
    I've tried running Disk Warrior on the drive, but that didn't seem to do the trick. Does anybody have any ideas?

    Nope, that didn't help, unfortunately.
    Also, I'll add that now the drive doesn't show up on the desktop all the time (sometimes I'll have to unplug/replug it, turn off/on the drive, or restart the whole computer to get it to show up).

  • Satellite M30X: Problems with USB 2.0 external HDD

    Hi,
    I have a Toshiba Satellite M30X. I recently bought myself a 200GB External Hard Disc. It has its own Power supply. If I connect it with USB 2.0 to my Laptop it happens to diconnect and reconnect permanantly. Sometimes it works, then I can put Data on the Disc. Then again it diconnects and reconnects many times. I've already tried another USB Port, but there is no difference. It's very strange, because I connected the External Hard Disc to many other Computers (Laptop and Tower) and it ALWAYS works!!! Its only with my Laptop it disconnects and reconnects the whole time. As I said, not always. Sometimes it works for like an half an hour or so then the action starts again ...
    Can somebody help???

    I really dont know why this happen. A friend of mine has the same problem with his desktop. While copy process runs the HDD is suddenly disconnected and there is also acoustic sound when the hardware is removed.
    I have connected his HDD on my Tecra and there is no problem. I really dont know what the problem can be. Maybe there is some problem with OS because I can not believe that there is some contact problem with USB ports.
    If you use many different USB devices at the same time maybe there is some conflict between few different drivers. Sorry but it is not easy to give some precise explanation.

  • Automount of SD card & USB external HDD with strange KDE pop up msg

    Today I reviewed lots of threads posted over the last year and some bug reports too about this issue, but it's happening for me too. Both SD card and USB external HDD have autodetectable filesystems on them because I can mount them by hand with "mount /dev/mmcblk0p1 /mnt" and "mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt". But it would be nice if I didn't have to do that.
    Although I didn't notice which explicit install that I did pulled them in as dependencies, I do have udisk2 and polkit installed. Also installed udiskie as a wrapper. I've been mounting these volumes by hand before now because I feel like I'm still learning the ropes of The Arch Way and guessed (apparently incorrectly) that mounting volumes by hand was just part of "The Arch Way". But based on some threads here and some bug reports, I guess this used to work in Arch but has been causing some problems for some people lately when they upgrade. I just installed Arch for the first time (using the 2015.02.01 iso image), so I don't have any background to go on.
    So what is The Arch Way for automounting external drives? I've skimmed the wiki article for this and because "Development of udisks has ceased in favor of udisks2." it seems that udisks2 is preferred. But it got installed and the daemon is running for me. The user is in the wheel group. dbus is running (though like one person who filed a bug, I too have several instances of dbus in my ps -aux output and I'm not sure if that is as it should be or not). I've done no special configuration ("not wittingly" anyway; I promise, my name is not James Clapper) that I think would have affected this.
    So for a newb with no special preference, how should automounting be configured in a new Arch system? In other words, what should be my first steps in trying to solve this problem for myself? I know there are lots of different ways to skin this cat, but I'd prefer the simplest and most elegant solution that does not depend on KDE or GNOME or other unnecessary tools. I've just (with this Arch system I just installed) begun using i3wm and I think I'll be sticking with it. That said, however, it's clear that I inadvertently/unwittingly managed to get some elements of KDE into memory as the following http://gamonics.org/img/2015-02-26-1731 … _scrot.png shows. This popped up both times, when I plugged in my SD card and when I plugged in my USB drive. Any thoughts on what's going on here? I did install okular explicitly because I think it's one of the best PDF viewers, but I don't understand why KDE is reporting anything to me when I'm running i3 and insert an SD card or a USB disk.
    And in the terminal, I get this output (apparently from udiskie):

    I personally can't answer the question of "simplest and most elegant" way of mounting devices. It all depends on what you want. If you expect more exotic functionality, say correct unmounting of devices if they were disconnected during a sleep cycle, there's probably no way around udisks2. For that you get a complex piece of software prone to... unexpected behaviour. Mind you some of it is related to front-ends like GVFS.
    As to your KDE issues, last I checked mount handling was disabled by default there, but you can control it manually (see man kcmshell4). Though I haven't followed up on KDE 5 developments. If going with udisks2, I'd recommend using devmon from the udevil package as a front-end (more details on the wiki udisks page).
    PS: multiple dbus instances are expected, check the user names and specified arguments in the ps output.

  • USB External HDD Enclosure with a 500GB HDD!!

    Hi All,
    I was just wondering if anyone has come across using a 3rd party USB external HDD enclosure with a hard drive (mine is 500GB HDD). What I am trying to do is to format the HDD so both PC and MAC can use it but it will be mainly connected to my iMAC. I have tried by using PC to format the HDD to NTFS but MAC will not show the HDD on the desktop when I plug the USB to the back of the iMAC.
    I have done some researches and it seems the only way to do make this possibe is to format it into FAT32. So I have tried to use FDisk to make the partition but it doesn't seems to support anything bigger than 120GB, now I am really stuck. If anyone knows any quick and painless solution, please spare me some advice.

    Windows can use, but not format, large FAT32 partitions. Microsoft wants to discourage using FAT32 for portable storage (for marketing reasons).
    The solution is to use Mac's Disk Utility to format the disk as FAT32 (misnamed MS-DOS in Disk Utility). The disk will then be read/write by both Mac and PC.
    Also, it's worth pointing out that you can read and write NTFS disks using MacFUSE with the NTFS-3G plugin. Albeit, this is very awkward to do unless you've got some UNIX shell experience.
