Problem with Windows Data Execution Prevention

Hi. I'm running Safari 5.1.2 on Windows Vista Business. Whenever I try to print a web page (any page) Windows reports a Data Execution Prevention and closes Safari. I can always print the same web page from IE, and I can always print to PDF. How do I fix?
LATE ADDENDUM: Now it won't  let me print to PDF either. I will have to stop using Safari - which would be a great pity as it syncs bookmarks so well to my iPad and iPhone

I got this from someone.
Acrobat X not printing
I purchased Acrobat X several months ago and initially expereinced no problems printing. For the last week or so, I am unable to print PDF documents from Acrobat X. I can print successfully from any other program on my PC. I can also print successfully from Adobe Reader. However, when I open up the same PDF in Acrobat X, I click on print and select the defaul printer, a dialog box says my document is printed but nothing prints. The printer queue for the selected printer is blank.

Every time I open iTunes, the Data Execution Prevention Closes it Down. We Have Windows XP

I finally got it to work by making sure that I was running itunes as the "administrator".  Here's what I did: Right click on itunes......click on 'run as'.....click on "administrator", it'll ask for a password.  If you don't know it (like me) create a new account user called "Admin" with a password.  Everytime you want to use itunes do this.  I know it's a pain but so far so good.  Hope this helps.

Yes, this did solve the problem.  But I had some trouble updating QuickTime.  It failed, with the installer complaining that it did not have the required permissions to install the files it needed in the program directory.  I got it to work by telling it to install the files to another directory.  All seems well now - Thanks!

  • Adobe Flash Player 11.9 r900 constantly crashes with a data execution prevention error.

This happens with almost every website I go to.

Hi moreofless, did a separate crash dialog indicate that it was a DEP error (sometimes the Windows crash dialog will indicate this)?
In some cases a DEP error can indicate that malware is attempting to interact with Flash, or that the Flash media you were using was malicious. It may be worth running a few supplemental scans just in case. The support article has suggestions on free tools that have proven reliable for Firefox users: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]].
A common problem on Windows Vista and higher is incompatibility with the protected mode feature of the Flash Player plugin. Usually this leads to frequent, unsubtle problems, so you might not have this problem, but just in case, you could disable it.
See this support article from Adobe under the heading "Last Resort": [http://forums.adobe.com/message/4468493#TemporaryWorkaround Adobe Forums: How do I troubleshoot Flash Player's protected mode for Firefox?]
Or if there are problems with permission, try this way:
    (1) In a My Computer or Windows Explorer window, open this folder:
    C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash
If that folder does not exist, then you are using 32-bit Windows, and you can open the following folder instead:
    C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash
''(Note: This folder exists on both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows, but on 64-bit Windows Firefox uses the Flash player in the SysWOW64 folder instead.)''
    (2) Check for a file named mms.cfg:
'''''Note:''' If you do not see file extensions such as .ocx, .dll, .exe, and .cfg on the files in this folder, then Windows may be hiding these from you. In order to work with file names accurately, it is best to unhide the extensions. This Microsoft support article has the steps: [http://support.microsoft.com/kb/865219].''
    (A) ''If mms.cfg exists,'' drag it to your '''Documents folder''' where you can edit it without being bothered about administrator privileges
    (B) ''If mms.cfg does not exist,'' open your '''Documents folder''', right-click > New > Text File and name the new file mms.cfg
    (3) Open mms.cfg from Documents into a text editor such as Notepad.
Add this on its own line (I put it last):
    ProtectedMode=0
Save the file and close Notepad.
    (4) Hold down the Ctrl key and drag the mms.cfg file back to the Flash folder to make a copy there, keeping the original in Documents
This change will take effect once the Flash plugin is completely unloaded, which may require exiting and restarting Firefox (allow a few minutes for all the Flash processes in memory to terminate after exiting Firefox).

  • Acrobat 9 Pro installer crashes with DEP (Data Execution Prevention) on Win XP SP3

Well the title says it all: Whenever I try to start the Installer and press "Next", it grinds for some seconds and then "encounters a problem and cannot continue" stating a DEP violation.
This happens with both the CD version of my box and the downloadble trial installer.
Any hints? CS5 Design Standard was installed and works fine. Only Acrobat does this.
    Thanks, Philipp

Either way I get the same installer error twice then an itunes error that it could not install because it needs quicktime. (which I have).
okay ... 7.0.0.70 needs QT 7.1.3. the itunes/QT installer bundle has changed up significantly, in that the QT part of the install runs before the itunes part. (it used to come second.) so if there's a problem with a QT install, that might be causing the current issue with the overall itunes install.
so let's try a careful standalone QT 7.1.3 install, to see if that goes in properly.
download and save a copy of the QT 7.1 standalone installer to your hard drive. (we'll run the install from there rather than online.) switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the install.
Quicktime 7.1 Installers … get the one that doesn’t mention itunes
if you get an error message on the QT standalone reinstall, let us know what it says. include error message numbers if you're getting any.
if the install goes through okay, try another itunes 7.0.0.70 install. does it go through properly this time?

  • How do I keep Windows Data Execution Prevention (DEP) from repeatedly closing Firefox?

Problem started after I installed the last Firefox update. I will be on line then Firefox is shut down and I get a message in a small window that it was shut down Windows DEP which is a security feature in Vista. After a time lapse of several minutes and a reboot of the computer Firefox will start working again but eventually it is shut down again after executing an enter, send, delete or other such command.

    Vista 64 bit
Many thanks. If you're still not launching after your complete uninstall/reinstall, we'll go searching for old QuickTime componentry stashed in non-standard locations on the PC.
First we'll need to change some view settings.
In your Start menu, open Computer.
In your Organise menu, select Folder Options.
In the View tab, make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is selected, and Hide extensions for known file types is unchecked.
    Click OK.
Now in Computer, open your C:\ drive (or whichever drive you have your operating system installed on).
    Open the "Windows" folder.
    Open the "SysWOW64" folder.
What files and folders can you see in there with QuickTime in the title? (In a standard installation of Quicktime you should be seeing precisely two files ... QuickTime.qts and QuickTimeVR.qtx ... and no QuickTime folders whatsoever.)

  • "Data Execution Prevention Problems" with Adobe 9.3 (Win)

    Dear All:
I have recently submitted some applications with an Australian university, and this university has difficulties
opening my MAC-generated PDF Portfolio. They keep insisting that there may be a virus, and I keep pointing
out that maybe some of the bundled PDF files that seek a full-screen mode might cause this alarm in the
    Windblows context.
The screen-shots they have sent me say this:
    1) Data Execution Prevention - Microsoft Windows
To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program
    Name: Adobe Reader 9.3
Data Execution Prevention helps protect against damage from viruses and other security threats. What should
    I do?
    2) Adobe Reader 9.3 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost.
For more information about this error, click here
    Now the only solution is for me to go somewhere and print out these PDF files, and then snail-mail them to HR;
the "paperless office" idea has never worked very successfully, and now I have confirmation.
Any help would be much appreciated. I never recall generating a virus on my MAC ....

I am having the same problem with Acrobat Reader X.
I am using Adobe Reader X and am constantly getting a Windows "data execution prevention" error every time I open and close a pdf file. What can I do to resolve this as Windows says it can not shut off "data execution prevention" for Adobe reader?

  • "Data Execution Prevention" prevents Reader 9.0 & 9.1 from running

When I try running Adobe Reader 9.0 or 9.1, the Windos "Data Execution Prevention" feature prevents it from running. I just received a new DELL computer with Vista Home Premium OS with Adobe 9.0 already installed. When I run the Adobe Reader, it stops executing because it is using a part of memory reserved for system files. Windows states that "Data Execution Prevention" has stopped the program to prevent possible corruption. I downloaded version 9.1 and still have the same problem. I downloaded the "light" version of Version 9.1 and still have the same problem. If I try running from Firefox or from the Desktop icon, I still have the same problem. When I try from the Control Panel to set Data Execution Prevention to exempt Adobe Reader, I get a message that Adobe Reader needs to run under DEP and cannot be exempted. So, I can't run Adober Reader 9.1 becasue Windows "Data Execution Prevention" stops it. Can anyone help? Thanks.

I have a user experiencing the same problem.  Opening the program itself (not by executing a pdf file) end up crashing Adobe immediately.  Initiating Adobe Reader from a PDF file, it appears to crash during "Initializing DigSig(2).api".  As other users have noted in other threads pertaining to this problem, Data Execution Prevention pops up a message basically telling the user that the program was blocked and to make an exception.  When I try to do this for AcroRd32.exe, DEP complains that the program must run with DEP enabled and it cannot be turned off for this program. I've installed Foxit Reader as a temporary work-around, but we have a lot of industry-specific programs that rely heavily on Acrobat Reader and I fear it may have a much more far-reaching problem since Adobe Acrobat Reader 9 is dead-in-the-water.  Anyone have any thoughts on this?  Is Adobe/MS working on a solution?
Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 64-bit

problem originaly affected pages with videos on it but now its effecting every single page i open and i get tons of pop ups and alerts saying crashed, closed, stopped working.
what can i do to stop this problem?

DEP (Data Execution Prevention) is Windows "protecting you from yourself".

  • How can I upgrade Software version 4.2.1 so that the Wondows Data Execution Prevention does not closr iTunes?

Hi I am trying to add some CD content to my iPod. Windows Data Execution Prevention closes itunes even though I have enanbled the iTunes exception. Is there an upgrade fro software version 4.2.1
    which addresses this problem?

    Welcome to the discussions,
you will lose your all music you did not buy it in the iTunes Store. The rest can be copied to the new computer by using "transfer purchases" from the File menu in iTunes.
Disable autosync in iTunes on the new computer before you connect, set up your account, authorize in the Store menu and set up at least one contact and event on the new computer, to be able to merge data after your device got erased during the first sync.
After transferring your purchases, back up manually by using "backup" from the same menu.
See what's included in the backup here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
After your device got wiped during the sync process, restore from that backup again.
It may be useful to create an own user account on the computer, to be sure the content from your ipod will have it's own iTunes library.

  • Data Execution Prevention message...

I am getting a message from MS Windows:
Data Execution Prevention - Microsoft Windows
"To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program."
    Name: Adobe Reader 9.3
    Publisher: Adobe Systems Incorporated
I already have added this program to the DEP section under "System Properties" -> Advanced -> Performance "Settings" -> Data Execution Prevention ->
I don't know what else is going on? Thank you all in advance.

Perform the following steps and itunes should be good to go again
Remove iTunes and related components from the Control Panel
Use the Control Panel to uninstall iTunes and related software components in thefollowing order and then restart your computer:
    iTunes
    QuickTime
    Apple Software Update
    Apple Mobile Device Support
    Bonjour
Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)
    THEN REINSTALL THE ITUNES

  • ITunes 12 incompatible with Windows Vista Data Execution Prevention

I just did a clean install of iTunes 12.0.1 after removing 11.4 and other components as described in Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates. I'm running Vista Home Premium 32-bit SP2 with 3 GB RAM. Soon after closing the iTunes GUI, I get a Data Execution Prevention notification:
I have already tested with every DEP setting except AlwaysOff, which would globally disable an important Windows security feature and is therefore not to be recommended. The problem is apparently a Buffer Overflow Exception. Here are the details from one instance:

This is actually not a new problem. As an experienced user of 32-bit Vista, I would have to say that the last compatible iTunes version was 11.1.5. See also Windows Vista problem reports after latest Itunes 11.2 update.

I have been getting a "Vista Data Execution Prevention" error message whenever I closed iTunes for months now, and after reading through a few forums, I have found a solution that works.  Long story short:
    1) Start iTunes
    2) Open the Windows Task Manager
    3) Go to the "Proccess" Tab
    4) Find "AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe *32" and right click on it.
    5) Select "Properties" from the drop down menu
    6) Go to the "Compatibility" Tab
    7) Check the Box next to "Run this program in compatibility mode for:"
    8) If "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)" is not in the field below, click on the down arrow and select said option.
    9) Click on "OK" to close the window.
    10) Close the iTunes application
    11) Reopen the iTunes application
    12) Close the iTunes application again.
At this point you should not see anymore "Vista Data Execution Prevention" error messages when you close iTunes!
P.S.   If you want to go back and de-select running "AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe *32" in Windows XP Compatibility mode, you can.  Though this part is totally optional.  The next time you close iTunes, you will get one last "Vista Data Execution Prevention" error message, but don't worry, it will be the last one.  Try opening iTunes again and then closing it, and TaDa, no more error messages.  I don't know why running AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe *32 in compatibility mode JUST ONCE solves the problem, but it worked for me.

Welcome tocguy. If I may ask you a question: How much memory does your Vista x64 PC have? I have 3 GB, which is the maximum that 32-bit Vista can recognize, but I seem to recall that 64-bit Vista can utilize much more than that, and wonder if that might be why 64-bit users are scarce in the 11.2 thread.
I have now also done a truly clean reinstall, deleting Apple folders in ProgramData and each user account's AppData folder, and even the iTunes folders in each user's Music folder. Of course I moved my iTunes Media folder to a safe location first, and one iTunes Library backup file suitable for version 11.1.5. I also cleaned the registry. The most I can say is that I sometimes don't get a BEX upon closing iTunes now, but usually I do. I deselected one default setting during installation, "Use iTunes as the default player for audio files." (If an audio file can be opened by Media Player 11, why would I want to open it in a program that gives me a BEX nearly every time I use it? Too bad my AAC files purchased at iTunes Store can't be opened by WMP, but I certainly won't be buying any more of those now.) My advice to other Vista users: Don't waste your time reinstalling, it won't solve the DEP problem.
Ran the Program Compatibility Wizard to run iTunes in XP SP2 compatibility mode, but abandoned that idea after the first BEX.
Thought I was onto something when I tried the registry fix at http://blogs.technet.com/b/askperf/archive/2008/06/17/to-dep-or-not-to-dep.aspx. Johnny DEP thought he was so slick when he saw iTunes listed as an exception in his DEP tab, but there was one minor problem (yes I did reboot):
Oh well, it's probably a bad idea to allow buffer overruns anyway. The fact that this didn't work causes me to think that Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit or Application Compatibility Toolkit would also be a waste of time. Vista users who wish to avoid BEX errors can either downgrade their iTunes (free) or upgrade their Windows (not free).
