Problem with winmail.dat Attachments in our company

First, i did read all Entries in this Community about winmail.dat, but there's no entry for my problem.
We use exchange server 2010 and outlook 2010. All Mails are written as HTML-Mails. There's no RTF Mails in our company.
The problem ist, our cio ist using a ipad with a hotmail mal address and most mails with attachments arrives as winmail.dat on the ipad.
But not all!
I could verify, that a Mail with doc, pdf, xls attachments was opened ok on a iphone4s (with ios6) but showed as winmail.dat on ipad3 (ios6) at the same time!
Has anyone a explanation to this?

Winmail.dat files are attachments sent by Microsoft mail applications (Outlook, Outlook Express or Exchange) on a proprietary RTF format called TNEF (transport neutral encapsulation format).
An e-mail containing an winmail.dat attachment looks like an empty e-mail with only one attachment. The original e-mail information like subject, body and attachments is packed into a single winmail.dat file, which in some cases also receives a generic name like information01.dat.
If you wanna open it, you should download a winmail viewer.
Hope this help u!

How do i open winmail.dat attachments in mail ?

Having problems with Winmail.dat attachments?  This is really Windows problem but their hubris will not allow them to admit it.
Windows does have a global fix for this problem but it is not a general patch - in their KB there is a fix for Exchange servers which cause the winmail.dat problem but most users don't know about it or have it implemented.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/138053http://
Here is a solution that Apple users can get for $30.  An Austrian program and APP called Letter Opener http://www.creativeinaustria.com/http:// is the solution to seamlessly opening Winmail.dat files.

  • Outlook users' problems with Apple mail attachments

Folks on Windows XP using Outlook 2003 are having problems with email from Apple mail. Apple mail is using Windows Friendly Attachments and Rich Text as the settings. Sometimes attachments (Word, Excel, PDF) come in fine with an additional .htm attachment, but the body text of the message is missing. If the Outlook user opens the .htm file, there is the body of the Apple mail. Testing with Plain Text results in the body text appearing fine in Outlook, but the attachment is seen as a *.dat file and of course can't be opened. The Macs are all on OS X Tiger with all OS updates applied. Users of Outlook in other offices don't have this problem, and users of Thunderbird on Windows don't have this problem. Any ideas on what is causing this and how to resolve it? Is there a setting on Outlook that needs to be tweaked? Is there a setting on Apple mail that needs to be tweaked? Apple mail attachments to this Windows office worked fine until a few weeks ago. I do not know what changed between then and now as I am not in charge of the computers at the Windows office. Could a Mac OS update have caused a problem? Something on Windows or Outlook specifically? Thanks for any help you can provide. I've scoured the web and have tried everything to no avail. Zipping attachments, while a workaround, is not a long-term solution. Thanks!

Is this in an environment where an MS Exchange Server is being used? Seeing a file change to .dat would often point to that.
Plain Text should be the plan of action for users of Apple Mail, but something (probably the Exchange Server) is messing that up. See:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/138053
    and also related:
    http://www.pchell.com/support/winmaildat.shtml
Moving to Leopard would probably not solve this -- the administrator of the exchange server must act.
Also the problem with winmail.dat files is known to impact other email clients used even on Windows computers.

  • Winmail.dat attachments from Exchange 2013 on premi and Hosted Office 365 set up.

    Hello TechNet,
I have an on going situation with winmail.dat attachments. I currently have a ticket open with Microsoft, but I want to see if anyone has personal experience with this. Here is the rundown.
We have migrated from an Exchange 2007 server to Exchange 2013 for the migration to Office 365. We also have a hosted Office 365 server with half of our mailboxes in the cloud and half of them on the Exchange 2013 on premise server.
    The current settings for TNEFEnabled:
    On Premise: False
    Hosted: False
Whenever a internal email with a calendar invite(exchange calendar, go to meeting) goes out to any external domain the recipients receive winmail.dat.
When settings for TNEFEnabled On Premise and Hosted are set to true both calendar invites and PDF, Excel attachments etc the recipients receive winmail.dat.
When speaking with Microsoft about this issue. The representative was watching me through a LogMeIn session as I set both TNEFEnabled false on both on Premise and Hosted.
This is really frustrating as many employees depend on this to be fully functional, and to be honest am tired of dealing with this.
    I need help.
    -Ben

I am having the same issue.
Luckily I have only migrated my own mailbox to office365.
Tried both true and false TNEFEnabled on both onpremise and office365 via powershell and confirmed that both have been applied.
If I send the email as a plain text then the attachment works ok. If I send it as HTML then I get winmail.dat.
The above KB doesnt really help me, sending plain text emails is like going back to the dark ages!
I am sending from outlook to outlook (I send from my external email address, to my work email address and visa-versa)
If someone with an onpremise mailbox sends me an email, the attachment works ok.
If someone sends me an attachment via hotmail, the attachment works ok.
It seems to only effect emails I send to myself through outlook, i am sending it through a POP3 account to our onpremise exchange 2010 which forwards the email to office365

  • Winmail.dat attachments

We are running a Tiger Server for our mail service, several of our business clients keep on sending us winmail.dat attachments, I know why these are generated and that my users can use TNEFenough but they're irritated by the whole situation !! mutterings about using PCs (I think crap) ! is there anything I can do at the mail Server to remove this encoding so that my users receive ordinary attachments ? the senders aren't interested in resolving what to them isn;t a problem !

Changing anything with Outlook in this regard affects messages sent with Outlook only, not with messages sent by the iPhone's Mail client. And if you are sending messages with your Exchange account using the Exchange SMTP server with the iPhone's Mail client, changing your Gmail account settings won't have any affect on this.
Are you sending messages with your Exchange account and SMTP server, or with your Gmail account and SMTP server?
I'm not sure how an ATT######.dat file is included when not using AT&T's SMTP server to send the message - the message is being sent by the Exchange SMTP server, but I'm not sure how such a file would be included regardless.
If you are also accessing your Gmail account with the iPhone's Mail client, does the same occur when sending messages with your Gmail account and SMTP server?
If not, the problem lies with the SMTP server used to send messages with your Exchange account or at the Exchange server.

  • One user receiving WINMAIL.DAT attachments from one or two domains

I have a single user in our organization that is RECEIVING WINMAIL.DAT attachments which contain PDF's from only one or two domains external to the organization.
Let me be clear that he is not sending out WINMAIL.DAT attachments to anyone. I have tested sending him RTF emails with a PDF attachment from an external address and he is receiving them just fine. We are running two Exchange 2013 servers in
HA configuration and this user is using Outlook 2010 for his email client. If he looks at these messages in OWA, they still have the WINMAIL.DAT attachment within OWA. I cannot find an answer for this anywhere, and this is not related to disabling TNEF on
our exchange servers.  Does anyone have any ideas?  I would really appreciate the assistance.
    Thanks,
    Dean

    Hi
Did you try this article -
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/278061/en-us
If the above article did not help then you can try the following
    1) Create an external contact for sender email address from whom the email is sent to the affected user.
Run the below command for that sender external contact
    Set-MailContact "External Contact" -UseMapiRichTexFormat Never
Ask the user to send email once again to that affected recipient and see if it still occurs.
Most likely the latter should fix your problem.
Please mark as helpful if you find my contribution useful or as an answer if it does answer your question. That will encourage me - and others - to take time out to help you.

I recently purchased an Iphone 6plus and I am receiving pdf attachments that are shown as winmail.dat attachments on the iphone. When I check the same e-mail on my macbook pro the attachment is a pdf and I can open it. Why is this happening?

I had this problem too after i upgdatd to OS X Mavericks... only the songs on my iphone 5s that i purchased from itunes would play.
i read something about it being a syncing issue. when you plug your phone into your computer with the usb cable, the person said to switch from automatic syncing of itunes to the "manual" option. mine was already set to manual so i wasn't sure anything would work. BUT, when i plugged my phone into my computer, it started to sync all of my music on my phone again (top of itunes bar where song playing/time is listed said "now syncing 123/534 songs to x's iphone"). once that was completed, i checked the music app on my iphone and everything was back to normal!
so, i would suggest setting your music syncing settings to manual if you haven't tried that yet!
    hope this helps!

  • Winmail.dat Attachments are received whether TNEF is disabled or not

    Hi,
we've got some issues when sending emails to some linux recipients, that attachments or s/mime signed emails are converted to the dreaded winmail.dat attachements.
On Exchange 2010 i've just configured the corresponding remote domain (or the default one) to disable TNEF sending to this mail domain.
Apparently with Exchange 2013 this setting does not work anymore. With setting the parameter "TNEFenabled" to $false, the recipients still get winmail.dat attachments.
do you have any idea how to work this out?
    Kind regards,
    Peter

  • Has anyone had a problem with their imac because the power company installed a smart meter which broadcasts the readings to the company?

Has anyone had a problem with their imac after the power company--in my case Pepco in Washington DC--installed "smart meters" which read the meter and transmit the data via wireless?  I've had trouble and when I move the imac downstair it disappears. Help!

    barryfromwashington wrote:
would putting up a metal shield by the meter help?
It might, as long as the shield is grounded. Metallic (such as copper) window screen is often sufficient.
As mentioned, it would not hurt to file a complaint. The burden of proper shielding should probably belong to Pepco. Among other things, the FCC frowns upon RF leakage and its interfereing with radio communications. Besides, Pepco probably would not want you to affix a shield around their gear - liability issues, etc.
You could experiment by temporarily hanging a shield-screen on the inside of the wall, behind where the meter transmitter device is located, and see if there is any beneficial change.

  • Problem with Java Dates and UPDATE for SQL2000

I am having problems with the date formats for Java. I am trying to put the current date time into a SQL table, here it the code I am using:
    var Today = new Date()
    var conn = Server.CreateObject( "ADODB.Connection" )
    conn.Open( "Provider=SQLOLEDB;Server=(local);Database=BillTracking;UID=sa;PWD=;")
    var sql = "UPDATE BillAssignments SET DatePosted = " + Today + " WHERE AssignmentID = '" + Request.QueryString("AssignmentID") + "'"
    var rs = conn.execute(sql)
I keep getting different errors and I have been unable to find a solution yet. I know that I need to change the date format from the Java standard to the one that SQL likes.
    Help....

Please tell us where the Java part of this comes in. I see that you are using JavaScript to load up data via an ADO connection (presumably on an IIS platform) - but I do not see where you are using Java

    Hi,

You do not need the TRUNC here in any case.
I don't think so. What if the user wants only data for 22nd May and the table has records with date later than 22nd also? In that case your query willl not work. In order for the Index to work, I think the query can be written like this I think Sean is right though. Use of TRUNC Function is quiet useless based on the condition given here, since the to_date Function used by OP will always point to midnight of the specified date, in this case 22-05-2009 00:00:00.
    Regards,
    Jo
Edit: I think Sean proved his point... ;)

  • Problem with loading data to Essbase

    Hi All,
I have a problem with loading data into Essbase. I've prepared maxl script to load the data, calling rule file. The source table is located in RDBMS Oracle. The script works correctly, ie. generally loads data into Essbase.
But the problem lies in the fact, that after deletion of data from Essbase, when I'm trying to load it again from the source table I get the message: WARNING - 1003035 - No data values modified by load of this data file - although there is no data in Essbase... I've also tried to change the mode of loading data from 'overwrite' to 'add to existing values' (in rule file) but it does'nt help ... Any ideas what can I do?

  • Problem with the date conversion

    Hi Friends,
i am facing the problem with the date conversion,  Actuall my requirement is to pass the date to the screen based on the user setting roles(SU01).
I have fetched the user setting date format by using the funciton module SUSR_GET_USER_DEFAULTS, The function module picks the exact user date setting (Like as MM/DD/YYYY, MM.DD.YYYY, DD.MM.YY).
After that i have implemented the FORMAT_DATE_4_OUTPUT funciton module for converting of the user role setting date format into system  date format.
for the english language case the funciton module FORMAT_DATE_4_OUTPUT works fine but the funciton module not supported for other languages
Can you please provide the Function Moudle for user setting date conversion.
The funciton module is most important for us,
    Thanks
    Charan

    Hope this logic helps you.
    DATA LF_DATE    TYPE DATS VALUE '21122010'. " 21-dec-2010
    DATA LF_DATE_BI(10).
WRITE LF_DATE TO LF_DATE_BI.  "Now LF_DATE_BI contains the date in user format
"Now populate the value LF_DATE_BI to the screen field

I'm using Oracle 9i. when I have more data in my database its acting weird. There is SELECT only from one table, but sometimes I have data from other tables aswell.
I didnt touch any config files or something else. Only created new User and DAD.
any ideas what should I do to fix that ??
    thnx in advice

    Hello,
My guess is that you are speaking about PLSQL Server Pages (PSP), and the PLSQL Web Toolkit.
This is why I do not think that you will have lot of answer since this forum is targeted toward Web Services developer (XML, SOAP, and so on)
I am inviting you to ask your question on the general Oracle Application Server - General or PLSQL forums.
