  • Macbook Pro 2011, Swap SSID against  Multidrive. Problems with Bootcamp Installation.

    Hi guys,
Whilst waiting for the release of drivers for Bootcamp to update to Windows 8 I thought I just tell you about my expieriencw with an SSID Upgrade I just purchased from GRAVIS in Germany for my MBP 2011. 13 inch I7.
I had originally a 750 GB Drive in my MBP but as I am working wiht Photshop and a have to store a lot of Photos on my HD I was absolutly fond of an offer I found recently in the latest GRAVIS Germany Flyer. ( Gravis is one of the biggest Apple Retailer in Germany)
They offered to swap `HD against a 50 GB SSID and built in the original HD in the Slot of the internal Multidrive. The Multidrive gets build in into a external case.
Wow. Everything done, including clone of HD to SSID for 399 Euros.
I called them on the phone, talked it through with them and took the Macbook there for the change.
The plan was that they do copy just the MAC OS Parition and I do a fresh Bootcamp Installation myself as I plned to update to Windows 8 anyway and for this I wanted to have a fresh Window 7 Intallation on Bootcamp.
    So far so good.
I picked up my Mackbook, rebuildet in the way discribed and wanted to install bootcamp at home.
Done it several times on my own, have never had a problem but this time  I had no chance. The problem was that in the moment the Windows installation should start the mashine looks for the internal drive and goes into Notebook Nirvana and thats it. And there is no easy work around.
My husband ( software engineer) and me tried a whole evening without success. Took my Macbooc back the next morning to Gravis. They laughed...of course, they are experts and know better...ha..ha.... than they tried everything what I told them we tried the night before ourselfs  and in the end after hours they swapped the HD against  the Multidrive back , installed Bootcamp and Windows 7 and rebuild again.
Anyway, I had my Bootcamp back but I I was no way satisfied with  this solution as I have to say I dont imagine ever time I want to reinstall my Bootcamp from now first driving to Gravis and  get my Hardware swapped, install it and swapp it back. I was really disapinonted as I expect as a customer that a Apple retailer knows about problems which could occure when you swap hardware on a macbook and tells you about this problem BEFORE and of course have an aceptable solution for this problem or tell you not to do it when you have got or plan at any time a bootcamp installation on your mashine.
I was totaly frustrated and called the Apple support about it.
I just could not accept this because there are so many other devices wihtout an internal drive in the Apple produkt range that I was sure there must be another solution for this problem.
The guy in the hotline was very helpful, As expected he never heard about a problem like hits before but  he went to the back office at once and talked the problem through.
He called me back about it a bit later. I did not try the solution which he sugested but I will do it next time. First at all he confirmed that its not possible for a Macbook Pro which gets delivered with an internal drive to install bootcamp from an external drive.
The Macbook Airs without internal drives getting delivered with a different version of bootcamp. As far as I undestood him you cant install this different Bootcampversion on your MBP.
This Bootcampversions have one more step in their installion routine and this is to create a bootable USB Stick within the installion from which than the MB starts when MY MBP was disappearing into the Nirvana because it  could not find the internal drive.
The idea now is to go to an Apple shop with your Windows installation CD/ DVD, to ask a nice person there to allow you to use an MB Air and produce with this the bootable stick. And than go home and try it on your MBP.
Certainly not an easy solution and I dont even know if it would work but still better that rebuilding your Macbook for every new installion of Bootcamp.
    Anybody ever tried this?
Maybe there are other possibilitie? Anybody found out something else?
Thought I let you know for the case anybody stumbles about the same problems after swapping his internal drive with a HD oder SSID.
    Kind regards Kattinka

  • How do i import bootcamp from a external hard drive

Hello, I have a 2007 24 inch 2.8ghz 7.1 intel imac, I have just upgraded my internal hard drive from a 500gb seagate barracuda to a 1.5tb western digital caviar green. I have a external usb 3.0 sata hard drive enclosure that has the original 500gb hard drive in it. I have succesfully imported my mac osx from the external 500gb drive to the new internal 1.5tb drive. I have partitioned the new internal hard drive for bootcamp but I can not figure out how or if I can import bootcamp from the external to the internal drive. When I boot up it shows my new mac osx hdd and the external usb mac osx hdd but no bootcamp. I know I cant boot windows from an external hard drive but can I import it from a external hard drive? Thank you in advance, Dave.

  • Can I install Bootcamp on an External Hard Drive?

    *Bootcamp on External Hard Drive?*
Can I install Bootcamp on an external Hard Drive? I don't see why it wouldn't work. Do I need to install the Mac OS on the external Hard Drive first, then Bootcamp?
    Parallels
Another question. Does Parallels allow you to not have to use the "option" key to boot into Windows? I mean if I use Parallels can I use XP or Vista at the same time as my mac applications?
What, (if any) are the drawbacks to using "Parallels"?
    *What Options are there...*
Is it possible for Apple to allow users to program a key on their keyboard, when pressed will bring up Windows so they don't have to always restart? I need to switch between Windows and mac OS quite often and it's a real pain to always restart. What options do I have?
    Thanks

By Microsofts Design no Windows can be installed and booted from external HDs. BootCamp just follows this.
However, according to this http://tubeshards.wordpress.com/2006/12/05/install-windows-to-a-macintosh-usb-dr ive/ it can be done.
    Parallels

Parallels is an OS X application which don't need a restart of your Mac to run Windows.
Therefor you can run OS X and Parallels Windows side-by-side.
Main drawback is, that Windows runs not native (on the real hardware) but in a virtualized environment.
While this is more than acceptable for 'standard' Office programs, any program that needs direct hardware access (especially games and 3D-programs) either do not run at all or run at noticeable slower speed.
Also you have to realize that the amount of RAM in your Mac is divided between OS X and Parallels Windows.
    *What Options are there...*

BootCamp is no option then, since it needs a reboot everytime you want to switch between OS X and Windows.
Parallels (and VMWare Fusion and VirtualBox, BTW) run alongside OSX.
    Thanks
    You're welcome. Hope it helps.

  • Problem Using Aperture as an External Editor

I'm having a problem using Aperture as an external editor for iPhoto. I've set preferences to "Edit in Aperture" and selected the Aperture application. When I click edit a photo in iPhoto, Aperture fires up as expected, but it does not load my photo. Nothing seems to be exported from iPhoto into Aperture.
I can export the same photo to my desktop and then load it into Aperture fine.
When I set preferences to edit in CS2, this works fine, only Aperture seems to be the problem.
    What am I doing wrong?
    I'm using the following versions:
    - iPhoto 7.0.2
    - Aperture 1.5.4

If you have Photoshop CS2 then you'd have a better editor using it within iPhoto as follows:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • T61 display problem on both Internal and External monitors

    Hi,
I have Lenovo T61 of Type 7662, Model CTO. One month back the right hinge of my laptop has broken. Now the display on the screen is not at all readable. If I reboot the laptop, it is getting loaded, but the display on the screen is not readable and also it is displaying 4 windows without any clear visibility.
I thought the problem may be with the LCD cable under Right hinge. So, I tried to check this with an external monitor. But, the same problem is occurring on the external monitor also. So, I couldn't find what exactly the problem is. If anybody has this kind of problem, please help me on fixing this issue.
    Thanks,
    RamPap.

well the GPU issue is fixable under free repair, but given that your hinge is broken, not sure whether the free warranty applies in this case.
Basically you need a new motherboard.
Also, can you post a picture of the condition of the hinge? (upload it to tinypic or flickr, then link it here).

  • Serious problems after Mavericks installation with External Drive Lacie P9220.

Experiencing serious problems after Mavericks installation with External Drive Lacie P9220 1TB. Mac Finder totally locked!
I had to format the External hard drive with a Windows PC (fat32), then format again with my IMac (mac Journal.) and hopefully restored data from time machine backup.
So far so good but system looks unstable. Some software were not able to write on the hard drive. Some strange things happens. With Mountain Lion never had an even minor issue.
I read many discussion regarding problems with WD, just wondering if anyone had the same problems with Lacie and if there is any tip to solve the
    problem.
    Many thanks.

Thanks very much for your reply.
Unfortunately I couldn't find a solution because the article refers to whom have configured the drive with included software and drivers that came with the drive.
This is not my case, I never used any third party soft ...only OS X disk utility ...

    Hola,

  • Bootcamp, Windows 7, External Monitor Problem

I am trying to hook my mac up to my 32" JVC monitor. It works perfect on the mac side, but when I turn it over to the windows 7 side there is an issue. If I do 'duplicate these displays', half of the bottom bar is cut off and about half an inch or so of space is cut from all edges. This is not an issue all the time, but it is annoying and it does get in the way on certain occasions. How would I fix this? I have tried the different resolutions, but to no avail, a lot of the space is still cut off. I have tried 'detect' and 'identify', but neither of those work. I've tried going into the nvidia panel, but there is no option to adjust the resolution manually to fit the screen.
The problem isn't so much the resolution. The resolution is perfect and crystal clear! The real problem is that so much gets cut off the edges. Is there any way to manually adjust it to where it needs to be?

Okay, well, I got it to work, but only in single mode (had to disable the actual mac screen).
Is there a way to do this in duplicate/mirrored mode? I know on the mac side everything fits perfectly even in mirrored and everything.

  • Windows 8 installation problem using bootcamp!

Hi guys, I would really appreciate some help with this, I think I might of made a big mistake.
Ok so I bought windows 8 yesterday to run on my iMac through bootcamp.
I went through the instllation process and came to downloading the drivers (windows support software) but here is where I think i went wrong, when i was asked to burn the windows support software to a cd or save it on to an external drive I chose the option of saving onto a drive but I actually just ended up saving the software on to the main hard drive for my iMac.
I continued to install windows 8 but after installation as expected I'm having problems with the keyboard, mouse, Internet etc without any support software. I went to 'my computer' and the local hard drive only shows the part of drive of the that was particitianed for windows and can't seem to find any way of accessing the mac os x side of the hard drive. I cant even transfer to the mac os x from windows to figure out the problem from there.
Could any one please help with this?
    Thanks

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
After using Boot Camp, your computer will start always in Windows. To start in OS X, just hold the X key while your Mac is starting. If you want to start always in OS X, after starting in OS X, go to System Preferences > Startup Disk, and select the OS X partition.
By default, Windows can't read the filesystem that OS X uses for the partition, so that's why you can't access to the OS X partition. Also, you should have burnt the drivers onto a DVD or a USB drive.
As you have already downloaded the drivers, after starting in OS X, copy them to a USB drive or burn them into a DVD. Then, start in Windows and install them. Note that Windows 8 requires Boot Camp 5 drivers, that you can only get from Boot Camp Assistant if you are running OS X 10.8.3. If you want to be sure that you install the correct drivers, I recommend you to download again the Boot Camp 5 drivers from the Apple webpage > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1638

  • Problems installing Bootcamp on my Macbook Pro i7

    Hi,
I ran the Bootcamp installation program, and then restarted my Macbook Pro Core i7, and was presented with three choices - 1. Mac OS X, 2. Windows, 3. EFI Bios. Choice 2 crashes, choice 3 runs the Windows installer, shows the progress bar, goes up to 100%, then freezes. Choice 1 also freezes. I then did a PRAM reset, and then choice 1 worked correctly. I repeated this procedure three times, but was unable to actually reach the main windows setup menu. Then finally I booted back into Mac OS X, went into Disk Utility and removed the windows partition. Unfortunately the Windows option (choice 2) still shows up if I press option and reboot the machine. So I have two problems, 1. How do I remove the Windows choice (2) while pressing option during bootup, and secondly, how I do get bootcamp to install correctly?

    hi,
    regarding the external drive question
i would ask the question in the boot camp forum.
regarding space issues on a mbp:
i solved my space problems using the "printer repair utility" and the additional delete of some files/apps like garageband including the sounds files.
maybe "Disk Inventory X" will help you getting an overview about your disk-usage.
i hope this hints offer a small first help for you.
    best regards

  • Problems with bootcamp on Mac mini (Mavericks) late 2009

    Hi all!
The problem I encounter is that I get an error message saying that the files aren't available on the software update server (?). I don't get to the point where to partition the hdd or in my case the ssd.
I have tried with an external 500 gb hdd (FAT formatted in the mac mini) and with windows on a dvd but it doesn't work. I use 64-bit win7 ultimate, but can use any win7 version as long as it works. The mac has 160 gb ssd, 4 gb ram, dvd-drive, connected to the internet.
Can and would some kind soul help me get past this problem?
The error message loseley translates (from swedish to english) into: Can't install the software since it isn't available on the software update server right now.
    Regards
    Pierre

Ok. I now have downgraded to Mac OSX 10.6, made all the software updating and now i get to the partitioning part. Yay! But since bootcam now is 3.0.4 the win7 64 dvd won't boot. I suspect I need the 4.0.4 version of bootcamp to make that work. This is now undergoing.
If anyone can offer an explanation for this tedious task to get wn7 64 on the computr, please feel free to spek your mind. I know I would like to with some guys at apple...
