Problems after installing OSX Leopard

Hi
After installing Leopard on my Powermac G5 duel 2.0Ghz only the dock appears (nothing on the desktop) then the cursor turns into a beachball and constantly spinning and unable to do anything, any ideas?

You "should" not lose anything, Archive and install moves you current items into a folder and then does a clean install of the OS. But, things can go wrong and I would suggest backing up all those things before you do anything else, Did you read through the sticky at the top of the Leopard forum? there might be some blue screen info there.
If you can't get your computer to start to backup your data, there are a couple of options available
1) If you have an external firewire Hdd, you could install 10.5 on it, boot your system from it and then you should be able to pull anything from your original drive to the external drive and when done do your install on your regular drive. (there are other options here as well--after you had everything on your external hdd you could clone it back to your original drive using carbon copy cloner or ? SuperDuper( i haven't used SD but others recommend it) This is a good solution, as after you are done and have everything working on your regular computer, you can then use the external hdd for Time machine backup.
2) If you have another mac, you can start the mac you need the info from in target mode, hook the two together and drag your data off the corrupted mac onto the other one for temporary storage and then wipe and reinstall your computer.

  • Itunes quit unexpectedly after installing osx leopard

I have just installed OSX Leopard and now itunes 7.5 refuses its service. i have re-installed it several times, deleted all plists and database files. i also removed the whole itunes folder from my music folder and re-installed itunes hoping that i could at least get it to work again and re-import all my music but nothing worked so far. i rang apple support but they couldn't really help either. i searched the forum in hope of any solution and tried the recommendations i came across here but nada!
funny enough, i did a fresh installation on this mac but an upgrade on my macbook pro. and despite several warnings not to upgrade the previous system everything works just fine there..

I basically scanned both my libraries (the user one and the general one, located on your startupdisc) manually for anything that had to do with digidesign and threw it out because i am not using it anymore. be careful about what you throw out and if you are using time machine make sure you update it before you start throwing out extensions etc...
many items in the libraries don't show up in spotlight under leopard anymore, i don't know why that is and it only makes some peoples' life more difficult.
it's interesting what kind of weird remains you can find in your library, almost like going through grandma's attic...
    Viel Erfolg!

  • Has anyone found a solution for fixing the dvd reading problems after installing snow leopard?

I installed snow leopard on my macpro tower and my dvd player will not read dvds. My archived dvd all come up blank but on my laptop their fine. All my other dvds are just spit out. I have seen hundreds of post about this in the forums but I haven't come across a solution. Apple told me they have never come across this issue which is disturbing to say the least.

    Leroydouglas
Thanks, I did see that thread and way too many others like it. My drive was working fine up to the minute I installed snow leopard and now I can't read all my archived dvds of the last 5 years of my work. Nor will it read the training dvd "New" that I just bought. It also won't even read the iwork disc that came with snow leopard. Of course all these disc work fine on my other make that didn't get the snow leopard upgrade. Apple support told me they never heard of anything like this. I took it to the apple store and they think it the dvd drive itself. Please, it plays cds fine and accepts new dvd media...some. Countless people have had their drives go out right after the snow leopard install.
I'm sorry but what happens to a dvd player or what hardware problem happens to only allow a player to read a few dvds but all cds. Could someone explain to me what breaks. Apple saying I need to by a new dvd player from them is crazy. Why do I get the feeling that if I install snow leopard on my other machine that the dvd player will also break. How also can apple not have any record of this happening to others.
I work with windows machines and linux boxes and Macs and I'm sorry I trusted an upgrade to a mac os that has been around for a while. If I would have checked the forums the way I do with anything I work with I guarantee I would not have upgrade to snow leopard after seeing all the people out their with this issue. It is also shameful that apple says it has no knowledge of this problem.

  • Quicktime problems after installing OSX 10.6.8

Ever since I have installed OSX 10.6.8,
    1. I'm unable to play avi files even with Perian installed. This message always comes up: The document "xxx.avi" could not be opened.
I've searched for solutions and some suggested that it might be DIVX pluggins problem so I have deleted all DIVX files/components I can find. Still, my problem wasn't solved.
    2. Playing .mp4 is fine, but I have trouble saving trimmed video into .mov. The messahe always comes up: The document “xxx” could not be saved as “xxx”.
Before I installed OSX 10.6.8, I always have no problem playing .avi files and saving trimmed videos.
    I'm using Quicktime player 10.0
So I thought it might really be the OSX problem, so I installed my old OS back using the DVD to 10.6.3. The problem is still there.
Can anyone suggest solutions for me please? Thank you.

Why do you think you need to change the IP address on the printer? Is the Mac using the same IP address or is it set to use a different IP address range (subnet)?
If the printer is connecting to a router then it most likely is obtaining its IP address (known as DHCP) from the router, which the Mac would also be doing by default. And if the printer is set to DHCP, turning it off for several minutes is sometimes enough for it to acquire a new IP address when it is turned back on.
If the printer has a static IP address set then it is often possible to change the IP address via the keyboard of the printer. If you can tell us what make and model you have, then someone who has this model can reply with the steps or we can refer to the manual for this model and provide you with the steps to take.

  • Problem after instal of Leopard

Yesterday I installed Leopard on my iMac. Now I seem to be experiencing my Mighty Mouse freezing up when the computer comes out of sleep. I have to do a hard restart to get it back. As long as I don't let the computer sleep, no problems.
I've installed all updates and still have the problem.
    Any suggestions/ideas??

    Remiss63,
Since you already started a new topic here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6064334#6064334
Perhaps it would be better if you asked the people who have already given you suggestions there your questions. That way we won't be troubleshooting two slightly different issues in the same thread causing confusion as to who the answer is intended for.

  • Address Book - Problems after installing Snow Leopard

My Address Book now seems 'buggy'. Despite setting the 'sort by last name' in the preferences, the list will only sort by first names. Companies that were listed under the company name, now are listed as 'no name'.
Anyone with similar problems or recommendations for solution?

Of all the applications that could go buggy, this had to be the one, right. It's the one (mail and address book) that I use the most and depend upon the most. fortunately I had backed up my data before upgrading to Snow Leopard. However, Mail and Address book have been so buggy as to not be usable, almost. The address book icon in Mail does not bring up a mirror image of my real address book. And the bugs mentioned here in this thread are actually minor compared to the fiasco I had when first attempting to fix the problems. I had my complete address book duplicated . . . and when I tried to fix that, it went bonkers . . . ended up reinstalling the whole OS again. I sure hope they get this one fixed quickly. Otherwise, I'll have to resort to some other mail program that actually works. I'm very disappointed in this outcome!!!

  • Big Problem, Can't Access my Account after Re-Installing OSX Leopard

I've 2 accounts on my Mac. One for me (admin) and one general (managed).
I've just re-installed OSX Leopard as archive and install (without erasing).
All went ok untill I went to log-in.
Typed in my pwd and nothing... like if the pwd is wrong. I also got the pwd hint (just in case) and nothing. The password I type is correct but it doesn't let me in.
I can access the computer with the other account. All normal. The trouble is that the other account has no admin powers.
I did the OSX re-install before on my girlfriend's iMac and it worked perfectly. It's even faster.
So I tough to do it on mine too, bummer!
    What happened? Am I f**d?

You can reset your admin password by booting from the Install DVD. Since I know that you used an external HD (from your other thread) this means in your case: Hold ALT while booting, select your external HD which contains your cloned Install DVD. When it has booted, select your language. Do NOT continue to install the system again. Instead select the menu bar at the top of the screen. There's an option to reset the admin account's password there. When done simply quit the Installer and let your Mac reboot normally. You should then be able to login.

  • Display problems after installing 10.5.2 and the leopard graphics update

Shortly after installing the leopard graphics update, my display started exhibiting problems.
The next day, the powerbook wouldn't even boot, just leaving me at a blue screen.
I tried verifying permissions and verifying disk, reinstalling leopard and eventually did a fresh install of Tiger, which boots, but crashes frequently and has graphics corruption as visible in this screenshot:
    http://pics.livejournal.com/dorukai/pic/000fw0hw
The same corruption is visible on a second monitor if I connect one.
The timing (being right after installing the graphics update) suggests that the update somehow caused this problem (flashing the video card firmware maybe?) but any ideas at all are very welcome at this point!
Unfortunately after installing Tiger I kept getting updates, and one has broken the ability to boot normally, I can only boot in safe mode

I have the same problem. It happened right after I installed the graphics update. When the computer restarted, my screen went crazy. I couldn't see anything, just a screen full of horizontal lines. After restarting a couple of times it seemed to go away, but it has begun to happen again recently. although not as bad yet. I am not saying it's not a logic board issue, but it does seem funny that more than one person is experiencing the same type of problem after the graphics update. I guess it's time to take a trip to the apple store.

  • After installing Snow Leopard problems with using any of my Helvetica fonts

I've never really have a problem with any of apple's products until now.
After installing Snow Leopard I've found problems with using any of my Helvetica fonts,
which is a BIG problem if you work in DTP or print. You CAN'T remove the system version of Helvetica, and replace it with your own anymore.
Also Flash CS4 seems to be a dead duck, as after about 5-6 seconds of loading the program it crashes with a "KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE".
    <title edited by host>

Thanks Tom but the original post title was "Work in DTP, don't install snow leopard", but of course apple were unhappy with the title. I know the issue/problem has been discussed for months, the real problem is that it shouldn't be a problem which everyone has to find work arounds for.
After 4 days of playing about, I've finally got flash CS4 working and Quarkxpress was also a big problem for a few months. Printer description (PPD) files which snow leopard doesn't like, but worked in tiger & leopard.....means I can't use my two A3 inkjets for proofing anymore.
I'm just disappointed by snow leopard

  • After installing Snow Leopard on MacPro with 23" HD monitor I have noticed an anomaly when scrolling up or down, a horizontal ripple appears briefly, I have tested other browsers and there is no problem, only in FF 8. What is causing this?

After installing Snow Leopard on MacPro with 23" HD monitor I have noticed an anomaly when scrolling up or down, a horizontal ripple appears briefly, I have tested other browsers and there is no problem, only in FF 8. What is causing this?

    Hi applecore_eater,
When Leopard came out, machines were shipping with Tiger for 3-5 months after it's release. So the fact that you bought a machine with Leopard still installed is not uncommon, especially considering we're not even a month into release. Matter of fact, I'd be surprised to see a lot of machines (unless CTO) that are coming with Snow Leopard.
The battery issue is not specific to Snow Leopard or the MacBook Air. I've deployed SL to about 15-20 MacBook Airs and all of them have been perfectly fine (batteries).

  • Can't install osx leopard on my "new" hdd

I'm tring to install osx leopard on my g4. when I select my new 200gb ide hdd installer told me I have to initialize volume first. I go to disk utility and do it creating a new volume journaled etc. and it seems ok. I aldo use repair and test button and everything seems ok (no error on verification).
but when I come back I still can't install: installation starts but stop after 1 minute and I get an error message like "unable to install on this volume, try using disk utility".
I have replaced hdd with the old 80gb and installation started with no errors. so the problem is the new hdd? I formatted it on windows in ntfs with no errors, also disk utility format it with no error... any ideas?
    thanks

you do not mention this, but when you installed the HD into your Mac, did set the jumpers on the back to master or cable select (I can't remember which one at the moment) It can't be set to be a slave drive.
If it's to be a bootable drive, it has to be set for either Master or Cable Select.
Also, did you re-format the drive in the Mac as an HFS+ extended journaled format?
    Just covering the bases here.

I have the same problem. After installing OSX 10.9.3. my Macbook freezes more than 7 times. The problem came up after switching via Thunderbold to a second screen or after "waking" the macbook up. The last time osx didn't boot anymore. It freezes after the "Apple Logo" came up. (grey screen).
After booting the system with "cmd+V" OSX started again. Now I'm afraid to shut down the system and the macbook runs all day.
I hope someone can help me, here my perticulars:

  • Unable to print on HP J6480 after installing Snow Leopard

After installing Snow Leopard I've been unable to print from my HP J6480.  I get an error message saying to check for updates from Apple and the manufacturer.  Apple shows no more updates.  I've added a printer driver v2.6 from Apple, but that hasn't helped.  Had no problems printing before this.  Any suggestions?

Never mind.  Just went to Hewlett Packard site and the suggestion was to reinstall the printer.  I did so and it now works.  Of course, the reinstall wiped out other printers I had on there....Adding Snow Leopard has resulted in much more work than I thought it would be!

  • How do I uninstall snow leopard and re-install OSX leopard?

How do I uninstall snow leopard and re-install OSX leopard?

Sorry to hear that, Snow Leopard runs as fast or faster than either Tiger and Leopard did on my Jan 2006 Early Intel iMac on 2GB of RAM?
Before you blame Snow Leopard, run the Extended Apple Hardware Test and check the SMART status of your Hard Drive to make sure that you do not have another problem.
