Problems after System reinstall re Applications

Hi
I have reinstalled the system from the original disks and now a number of OSX Applications and printer options will not work.
I have reloaded some and they now work ok, one ( Dreamweaver ) will not work despite a reload!!
I have tried looking for - what I remember from OS9 - as the extentions and prefs to perhaps copy back to the new Library etc but these seem to be more difficult to find in OSX - there seem to lots and lots of folders in "previous system" folder.
Is there a specific place where I can find the files I need to resolve the problem or can you suggest a solution?
Also if I do not need it, can I throw away the "prevoius system" as it seems to be taking up a lot of space?
many thanks
Chris

Hi Cornelius
Compliments of the season to you.
I have given the frustrations of the computer a break over Christmas and now I need to start again to resolve my problem.
Thanks for your help so far.
I have done as you suggested and the DU does not give any errors. I have previously, before contacting the forum, run Nortons Disk Doctor which had found some directory problems which it resolved and performed speed disk to defragment the disk.
What was the next item you had in mind to address ?
Cheers
Chris
Chris:
You seem to have a number of issues that need to be
addressed. However, start with Repairing the disk.
Here's how:
Repair Disk
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the
"C" key.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and
restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU
reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will
need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk
Warrior
Good luck.

  • Lost imovie and iphoto after system reinstall, and couldn't find ilife DVD either

after i reinstalled my OS system, imovie and iphoto stopped functioning -- i can still see the icons in Application, but when i tried to open them, error messages popped up. For example, for imovie, i got "The QuickTime components necessary to view, edit, import, and export several kinds of movies are not installed. These components are included with the iMovie installer; please re-install".
i know that i should reinstall them, but the problem is: i bought my Macbook Pro in 2010, and it either came with ilife components installed, or it come with an ilife DVD (but i couldn't find it). In such a case, is there anyway to get them back without purchasing new ones?
    Thanks a lot!

    Hi Brie-
I haven't replaced the music in my back catalog of iMovies. That would be quite a project.
I did try a burned DVD and that played fine.
As a test, I once again purchased a song on iTunes but I can't import it into either iMovie or iTunes.
I'm running Quicktime 7.4.1. and not 7.5 because when I did the automatic 7.5 download all my iMoves lot sync. That wasn't the 'hang' problem, it was more like watching on YouTube where the frame rate and the audio don't match up.
I backed up my system, erased and reinstalled. Once I came to the 7.5 update, I had the problem again. Then, I did an archive and install - OSX, ilife, and all the upgrades except QuickTime 7.5. Along the way, I tested iMovie to see how it worked.
Instead of going all the way to 7.5, I did 7.4.1 which was the one before. My iMovies are now all in sync but, I'm not authorized to import or play. I did all the steps to reauthorize but I'm at my present impasse.
I'm sure that if I upgrade to Quicktime 7.5, I'll be back in the YouTube out of sync mode. I also didn't reinstall any 'flip4mac' or 'Slick' software (all of which worked perfectly until the 7.5 upgrade.)

  • Exchange profile parameter problem after system copy of XI server

I'm getting problem after the system copy of XI server. Following is the details. pls help to fix this one:
XQA is the system copy of XDV server. XQA is installed on rx2n1v1 server and XDV is installed on dbcixdv server. Following is weblink of XQA and XDV.
    XQA: http://rx2n1v1:57400
    XDV: http://dbcixdv:57000
After the system copy of XQA, i changed all xdv related parameters (hostname/port) in visual admin and configtool of XQA server.
Now when i run sxmb_ifr tcode in XQA, it should open the link of XQA server ( http://rx2n1v1:57400). But it open the link of XDV server (http://dbcixdv:57000).
The cause of this problem is the xdv parameter entires (hostname/portnumber of xdv) in exchange profile of  XQA server (http://rx2n1v1:57400/exchangeProfile).
Now if i change hostname/portnumber of xdv in XQA server (http://rx2n1v1:57400/exchangeProfile), it also make the same change in XDV server  (http://dbcixdv:57000/exchangeProfile).
Both XQA and XDV are in differnet hardware server. I don't understand why making changes of exchangeprofile in XQA also changed the value of exchangeprofile in XDV.
    Hope it clarify.
Pls give the solution of this problem.
    Thanks

  • Flash won't open (unexpected quit) after system reinstall from Time Machine

After purchasing a new machine, I reinstalled everything from my Time Machine backup, including all applications. Now Flash CS4 gives me "unexpected quits" every time I try to open it. Flash CS3 opens though. I deleted the prefs file and it still won't open.

I have/had a similiar problem. What I did was reset the SMC and PRAM.  You can also do a safe boot. For the PRAM, I had to do three times, and my computer finally booted up. Afterwards I verified my disk and repaired my permissions. So far so good. I guessing that Spotlight needed to re-index the system.

  • Time capsule problems after OS reinstall

After getting a blue screen on restart I had to do an archive/OS reinstall today. The reinstall worked fine but I am now having problems accessing my Time Capsule.
At first my computer didn't even recognize my time capsule. After restarting my time capsule, my computer recognized it. However, when I tried to open time machine to access the files, it stalled on "connecting to backup volume" for about 45 minutes and never connected. Similarly, the backup stalls on "preparing backup." I tried to stop backing up but it is currently stalled on "stopping backup." Finally, time capsule has disappeared from the menu at the top of my screen.
Any thoughts on addressing these issues would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same problem as well. I did an archive and install with OSX, then updated to 10.5.5 and now all the TC does is spin and say preparing. A sample from the console is

  • How to restore missing bookmarks icons after system reinstall?

After reinstalling my system (Win 7 x64) and downloading the latest Nightly build of Firefox, logging in to Sync and syncing my bookmarks, I discovered that the icons are missing (white square with gray outline). After visiting a web page, the icon is set back to normal. The problem is, that I have lots of bookmarks, and it would take an enormous amount of time to visit every page. And on the second hand, with icons its easier to access bookmarks.

I don't think you can, you'd have to revisit every website.

  • Freezing, crashing after system reinstall

I have system 10.2.8. Originally, mine was a 10.1.something. I have upgrade disks for the 10.2 version, and updated iLife from 2004 (or 3? ). First, the mouse began freezing, then the whole screen (with increased frequency) and I kept rebooting the computer. I ran disk utility, disk repair, and never came up with anything. I backed up my files to an external hard drive, and tried a system re-installation. Not sure which disk to use, I started with the newer osx.2 disks. I couldn't remember what all to key in for DHCP and DNS stuff for internet connections. Anyway, I thought I'd need to reinstall all of my peripherals, and when I got to the Belkin disk for USB, it couldn't find Classic. I tried reloading the Classic disk that came with the computer, and it failed to load. I got a message saying I "could not restore restricted-segment image; reading block 00073EE8-36". I tried to install the 6-disk system restore series, and the first one said my "volume macintosh" was unreadable or unusable. After having installed just the newer OSX disk, my internet connections weren't working. Not sure if that's because of not knowing what to type in the setup, or because I was unable to load the router and USB software. I also couldn't re-install my printer apps because the computer couldn't find the USB ports. Regardless of all of these horrible crumblings, the computer STILL hangs and freezes, even with everything wiped out. My 3-year plan ended in May. Oh, they did send me an update AppleCare CD since mine was unopened, and incompatible with 10.2.8. When I ran that disk, every test passed (processor, RAM, video ram, usb, diag, rezero, format, etc.) until it got to the last one: volume structure. It would get to stage 2 of 8 on that one, then the whole computer would restart. I did that vicious cycle for hours the other day. I finally learned to eject the CD by holding the mouse down during restart.
What next? I'm not sure what to install, if installation was the problem to begin with, or if I can afford to fix it...

You might want to try another install. Boot up from the CD by holding "c" down.
Once in, go to the disk utility and format your current drive. Then go back to the install disk and install the OS..
When you install, make sure that the only thing connected to your computer is your keyboard, mouse, and speakers.
Don't worry about the internet options if you do not know them. You can always add these later.
Can you give us more information about your system? RAM, HD capacity, processor speed, etc.

  • MySQL socket problems after system update

I have been using my new Mac Mini Snow Leopard server as Squeezebox Server for over a month wihtout problems. After a system update this weekend I started to get MySQL socket errors after reboot.
Started; log sequence number 0 43655
091213 17:10:04 [ERROR] Can't start server : Bind on unix socket: Invalid argument
091213 17:10:04 [ERROR] Do you already have another mysqld server running on socket: /Users/admin/Library/Caches/Squeezebox/squeezebox-mysql.sock ?
    091213 17:10:04 [ERROR] Aborting
Although I have posted this issue to the Squeezebox forum (http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=72510) where it primarily belongs to I wanted to hear if anyone maybe had an idea what recent changes in Apple updates could cause this? Maybe someone else has similar MySQL problems with other installations? I am a bit desperate by now so any idea or hint is appreciated.

Here was my solution/workaround for this issue to the rest of us poor fellas that have too fight around with Squeezebox server from time to time:
I setup SBS to use the the standard MySQL installation on Mac OS X SL Server since I could get it to run without problems from Server Admin. Here are the instruction from the SBS Wiki:
    http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/ExistingMySQLInstance
However, I had to deviate a bit from that in order to make it work since it seems a bit outdated.
First deviation was necessary for the MySQL access privileges. Notice the extra grant to slimserver@localhost. Don't ask me why but this worked. I do also not know whether both grants would be necessary because I haven't tried it. Feel free to improve it:
    # mysql -u admin_user -p
    Enter password: admin_password
    Welcome to the MySQL monitor.
Commands end with ; or \g.
Your MySQL connection id is 103 to server version: 5.0.24a-log
Type 'help;' or '\h' for help. Type '\c' to clear the buffer.
    mysql> create database slimserver;
Query OK, 1 row affected (0.22 sec)
    mysql> grant all on slimserver.* to slimserver identified by 'slimserver_password';
Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.13 sec)
    mysql> grant all on slimserver.* to slimserver@localhost identified by 'slimserver_password';
Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.13 sec)
    mysql> flush privileges;
    Query OK,
    mysql> quit
There were also slight differences necessary in the preferences setup because MySQL socket location was different from the standard one. Here are my db entries ~/Library/Application Support/Squeezebox/server.prefs:
    dbpassword: slimserver_password
    dbsource: dbi:mysql:database=slimserver;mysql_socket=/var/mysql/mysql.sock
    dbusername: slimserver
    Notice the extra mysql_socket configuration.

  • ADSL / fglrx problems after system update [Solved]

I'm hoping that somebody will be able to help me with this as I'm struggling to find the answer elsewhere in this forum. I recently installed Arch 0.7.2 base. I then got my internet connection sorted using my speedtouch modem as per the instructions on the Wiki. (using pppoa). I the installed xorg7, and gnome. I installed the ati-fglrx drivers from the instructions on the wiki. Up to this point, everything was working just fine.
I then decided to update the system so I did a pacman -Syu and all seemed to go well. After rebooting the machine, it would not start x and from the debug messages on the screen it seemed to be saying that it was having a problem loading the fglrx module.
I thought that I would try uninstalling the fglrx packages, then reinstalling and reconfiguring. I uninstalled them but then discovered that when I tried to download anything, my connection would be lost within a few seconds and wouldn't let me reconnect. The only way to reconnect was to reboot first. (I did find out that I had to do a modprobe ppp-generic first in order to connect since the update)
I then deleted my xorg.conf, and created another using hwd -x and then managed to get back into gnome using the default drivers - but obviously with no 3d acceleration. (I have a radeon 9500pro by the way). I tried connecting again and this time tested the connection through firefox. I managed to open 1 webpage before losing my connection again.
I'm sorry that I cannot post any logs just at the moment as I'm at work although I can later on. I'm just wondering for now if these problems seem familiar to anyone?

I have exactly the same problem as atalman.
My modem works fine, I can play eternal-lands/browse webpages for hours on end, but as soon as the modem is under any kind of heavy load, ie: ktorrent, amule, ebay (lots of images and open in new tabs) the connection dies..
    I try
    killall pppd
    usually to find
    pppd: no process killed
    , so I then try
    pppd call speedtch
which lets me know that the modem is already connected??
So I have to unplug/replug the modem in, pppd call speedtch, then it connects again on a different 'channel'.
dmesg shows no errors, I have enabled debug in the pppd settings which shows nothing, my firmwares are correct as Ive used the same on Slackware and Arch for ages. I originally thought the modem(rev 4) was dying so I swapped it over for my backup, an older manta/stingray  version, different (working) firmware but all the same problems.

  • Logic crashes at start after system reinstall

    Hi there,
After reinstalling my OSX after hard drive failure, I have installed Logic as well. Everything was working fine for a day, I installed most of my plugins too.
I did a few software updates.
However, after last update Logic started to crash at the start. It doesn't even load for a second, it crashes immediately. And so does Soundtrack Pro. Main Stage is fine, all the other applications too. I tried to reinstall Logic, trashed prefs, removed plugins...nothing works.
I'm 100% sure that the last update is causing this, I don't remember what exactly was there, but some ProKit ones for sure.
Strangely enough, none of the software updates updated my version of Logic. I downloaded the updates from Apple website but it didn't improve anything.
What do you suggest? I would like to avoid reinstalling whole OSX again, if possible.
    Many thanx.

  • T420s wireless driver problem - after restore/reinstall

    i have a 420s that works fine.
but something went strange with the wireless after one of the updates, not sure if it was windows or lenovo update.
in any event, i tried reinstalling the driver, and it stayed broke.  so i rolled back the computer to a week or so earlier.
this fixed the wireless, but broke a few other applications not lenovo related.
after manual updates on those programs everything works again.
so fast forward to today.  i did the lenovo update, and it decided that it needed to update the intel wirless driver package, since it was never installed.  **bleep**?  but i figured how bad could it be, AFTER i set a new restore point, so the only thing that would get restored was the wireless if it went strange on me.
after the update, wireless broke again.  not entirely sure what was wrong, but it just didnt work right and wouldnt connect or see some known access points.
question;  what is the proper method to completely deinstall/reinstall the wireless drivers and 'access connections' on this computer so that everything works properly?
    thanks for any insight
    mark

    hey markgca,
try uninstalling the wireless driver. let windows install its own generic drivers.
test again with the generic drivers.

  • Xperia z1 Problem AFTER system update to latest software 14.3.A.0.681

Hello people, First of all let my just say that I am new into the ''smartphones world'' so please excuse my queries if they proof to be 'obvious' to you! I have carried out a system update to my Xperia Z1 phone yesterday (Android 4.4.2. kitkat, latest available software 14.3.A.0.681). The update seem to have been correctly performed. However I have since encounter the following issues/problems with my phone and do not know how to fix them: 1) First of all my phone will no longer rotate...why is this? Is this related to the update?? Pictures/photos can no longer rotate and also phone screen does no longer rotate! Why is this..? 2) Second the 'Notifications Bar' structure has changed : is this also the result of the update or can I do something in settings to fix it and make it as before? When I scroll dawn the notifications bar, the icons are no longer displayed at the top line but are instead spread underneath BUT this is AFTER I press 'Quick settings'. 3) Battery signal icon has changed completely: no lines included inside icon to show usage but instead usage %age is now displayed. Also, when I charge my phone, there is no icon flashing as before and now lights flashing.. 4) Also when I want to use the phone after it has remained unused for sometime it states 'swipe to unlock' and makes a 'funny' note upon performance of the act: this was not the case before.. Can you please help me with the above? I am freaking out because I am excited with my new phone and would love to make full use of it properly but it is a bit hard for me since I have no clue how to fix issues/problems appearing every now and then since I am new into these things.. Thanking you in advance

    Hi there,
I think you have fixed your 1st issue.
    2) Yes, Kitkat has changed the Notification Bar structure. Its a bit annoying, but to get around it you can use Widgets - Tools and select the Icon, such as WIFI to be placed on your home screen to avoid multiple clicks. You cant do anything in the settings to make it like before.
    3) Battery Signal Icon - Again a Kitkat update has done that. The good thing is that it has enhanced Battery life considerably.
    4) I am assuming you are stating about the "sound note" it makes when you swipe in. Thats again a Kitkat feature and you can get rid of it though Sound settings if you dont like it.
Reality is that Kitkat runs very well on Google Nexus 5. Apart from that it has issues on every other Android power Smartphone out there. I also own a Nexus 4 who recently got upgraded to Kitkat and compared it with Nexus 5. Was not impressed to be honest.
As of my upgrade on Z1, I have been facing Volume issues. When I play a video the volume is minimized for some reason. Pause and play again and it goes to Normal. I have to reboot it sometimes to play normally. It also takes ages to connect to my 3G provider, whereas previously it was fast enuf. I hope the next upgrade will fix those issues.

  • Small problems after system update

I have a couple of problems which appeared after a recent pacman update. A lot of stuff was updated, including the kernel and xorg.
    1) Shutdown stalls at "Save system clock".
    2) Ctl-Alt-F(1-6) doesn't get me out of X11. Actually, this works sometimes, but usually not.
I could fix these, if I knew where to start. Can anyone help me with some diagnostics? I have a pretty simple setup, no desktop, just ratpoison and the apps I need for work, mail, web.
Can I redo an update, and if so, how? Is there (ever) any point in doing that?

    man hwclock:
          --directisa
is meaningful only on an ISA machine or an Alpha (which implements enough of ISA to be, roughly speaking,
an ISA machine for hwclock's purposes).  For other machines, it has  no effect.   This  option  tells  hwclock
to use explicit I/O instructions to access the Hardware Clock.  Without this option, hwclock will try to use the
/dev/rtc device (which it assumes to be driven by the rtc device driver).  If it is unable to open the device (for
read), it will use the explicit I/O instructions anyway.
The rtc device driver was new in Linux Release 2.
So as you can see, directisa is something that SHOULDN'T do anything on your system, but for some reason it is failing.  I'm guessing it is very specific to your hardware, though I've never heard of this happening.
