Problems booting OpenSolaris 2008.5

Hi all,
I can not boot OpenSolaris 2008.5 / OpenSolaris 2008.11-b98 due to a very weird bug in the ata driver.
I use Dell PowerEdge SC1435 with 4-core AMD Opteron, 12Gb RAM and 2x1.5T SATAII 7200rpm disks. Very straightforward configuration, in my view. I thought that would be painless process (it is with MS Vista and Ubuntu), but after the initial messages OpenSolaris 2008.5 seems to spin in cycle spiting:
WARNING: /pci@0,9/pci1166,36@1/pci-ide@e/ide@1/cmdk@0,0 (ata3):
timeout: abort device, target=0 lun=0
WARNING: /pci@0,9/pci1166,36@1/pci-ide@e/ide@1/cmdk@0,0 (Disk1):
Error for command 'read sector' Error Level: Informational
Sense Key: aborted command
Vendor 'Gen-ATA' error code: 0x3
I read all I could about similar issues in forums and bug databases - seems like a lot of people suffer from this issue. Here is what DOES NOT HELP:
http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-4078/ggmsj?l=ru&a=view
http://bugs.opensolaris.org/view_bug.do?bug_id=6586621
...many other suggestions to boot with options, disable this or that.
You'd think the ata driver would be the most solid part of OpenSolaris x86 by now and it is a production quality OS. What is really depressing is that even the upcoming OpenSolaris 2008.11 has the same issue.
After wasting 8 hrs this Saturday I am very, very disappointed with OpenSolaris. This is is my last desperate attempt to fix this issue before I move on to Ubuntu or something else that actually works. Thanks in advance for any help!

and 2x1.5T SATAII 7200rpm disksYou running this in RAID mode? Booting with BIOS raid can be problematic since many are quirky.

configuration, it would be ata0, or ata2).
It would be helpful to have a little more information. Does it occur on the boot cd or after it installls? What mode is your BIOS set to now? (ide/ahci). It this is off the DVD, it might be you hit this problem:

    Hello,
I have installed MaxDB 7.6.05.09 on a server with OpenSolaris 2008.11, an Intel Core Quad CPU, 8GB RAM and have other two PCs with JBoss connected to the database. After some time running (less than three hours) and the connections used when arriving at 80 (out of 400 available) database denied connections. When trying to access the MaxDB GUI console get the message '[...] cannot create semaphore".

  • Netra T1 AC200 problems booting into single user

I have a stack of Sun Netra T1 AC200's. I installed them all with Solaris 8 10/01 from my
Jumpstart server. I allready have about a hundred U1,U5 and U10's installed from this server so I know it should work. I have, however not installed any Netra's with it before.
My problem is that I have no problem booting the Netra's after I have installed them, but if you try to
boot into single user with fex. "boot -s" then it would display the usual "Type control-d to proceed with normal startup, or give root password for system maintenance". Problem is that no matter what I type, I don't get a reaction!!
I have everything on console, and I checked that all my connectors are correct and of the type specified in the Netra user manual.
Strange thing is that halting and jumping into the LOM works without problems, same goes for kicking the system down to single user from multiuser...
I've also checked with installing Solaris 8 04/01, but same thing happens there.. I can't have three faulty machines either...
All leads and helpful hints are welcome as I've checked and checked, but can't find anything out of the ordinary...
    On beforehand thanks,
    Thomas

What does "printenv input-device" show you? My thinking is that maybe LOM might have control at this point. It should probably be "keyboard" or "ttya".
Also check that root's shell is bin/sh in /etc/passwd.

  • Problem booting w520

    Hi,
I'm having a problem booting my w520.  I suspected that I had bad ram (unrelated issue), so I ran the windows memory diagnostics tool.  I plugged it into my AC adapter that came with the laptop, and left it running since it takes a long time.  When I came back the laptop was on the screen asking me whether to boot from the windows boot manager, my SSD drive or my DVD drive, which I thought was weird.  I selected the windows boot manager, it gave an error (could not initialize BTI or something like that which I wish that I remembered now).  I tried to restart the laptop, but it refuses to do so.  Instead of starting up, it goes into a reset loop -- it starts up, I the keyboard LED light comes on, and then it restarts.  It does that loop every 5 seconds or so.  Nothing is displayed on the screen, and there are no beeps.  It never gets to the post screen.  The only way to get it to do anything different is to remove all RAM, in which case it does that 1 3 3 1 beep sequence.  From other threads I followed suggestions to unplug it, remove the battery and do all sorts of pressing/holding power buttons for 10-30 times.  Nothing helps.
So, I'm wondering now, is there anything else I can do before I let someone repair this?  It was working just fine before I ran the memory test.  Did someone who had the same problem find a solution to this?
    Thanks for the advice.

You have already done a few of the things I would suggest.  You could try one memory chip at a time in one memory slot at a time.
If you still have warranty now would be a good time to make a call for service.

  • K8T Neo-FSR problems booting

    Hi
My Computer is having problems booting. Two days ago i went to boot my computer and all the fans started up and everything seemed fine, but then nothing happened at all, but my computer was still running (cpu fan is running, power suppy fan running, red light on tower has some activity at the begining but then nothing)(my monitor light is flashing like it does when the computer is off) , so I turned off the computer by the button. Then i rebooted the system and everything worked fine. Today I went to boot my computer and this happened again, but now it won't boot at all. I have had this motherboard since january and I have never had a problem before. Any ideas of what is going on? I am assuming that it is something with bios, but I have no clue what. Any help would be appreciative.

I have already unplugged any devices that are not needed during startup, I still have the same exact result, I tried to update the BIOS but it didn't read the drive because i'm assuming it doesn't know the boot order because that all comes the BIOS, so this is was leads me to think its something with the BIOS and not my hardware. My computer has a boot manager, I beleive its OSN??? This sits on my Maxtor drive with windows xp and solaris10 sits on the other Hard drive. Is there any more information you need?

  • Problem booting Lion after restoring disk from Time Machine

I have a late 2009 iMac which I have upgraded to Lion, having created a bootcamp partition with Windows Server 2008 before upgrading.
This has been working absolutely fine for a few months but then there appeared to be some kind of hard disk problem and booting would only go as far as a gray screen with apple logo and a progress bar, then shut itself down. I started into the recovery partition by holding down the Alt key and from there (after reading around the internet a bit) was able to reformat the OS X partition and restore it from my Time Machine backup (wireless to Time Capsule).
However it now won't boot, initial grey screen with Apple logo and spinning progress meter then restarts into Recovery HD. In Recovery mode Disk Utility reports all appears to be OK with the disk - there were some errors before I restored from Time Machine, but Disk Utility was able to repair them.
If I hold down Alt on booting I get the 'choice of boot disks' screen with EFi boot, Windows and Recovery HD. If I choose EFi boot I get the Apple symbol alternating with a circle with diagonal line (prohibitory?) a couple of times, then it boots into Recovery. If I boot the computer with the Shift key it successfully boots into Windows, but won't boot into Windows from the 'choice of boot disks' screen.
Is my problem that I need to somehow 'make' the restored partition bootable and if so how, or is there a more fundamental problem here, either with my hard disk or (gulp) with my Time Machine backup?
    Any ideas much appreciated, thanks
    -Chris

Can't see SMART status anywhere in Disk Utility, shouldn't it just be visible at the bottom of the window when I click on the disk? Verify disk returns OK. I do have the correct format option.
I am now trying Tony T1's suggestion of trying again, but this time on Erase... I have chosen the Security Option that writes 0's over the whole partition to see if it throws up any signs of failure.
    Thanks for your suggestions.

  • P45 Platinum will not boot Server 2008 with 2x2GB...

I was working through the night last night to get my new rig built and installed with the new SP2 of Server 2008 and was having problems that seem to point to the mobo not liking the optimized settings for my 2x2GB.  Hopefully my signature has all the system specs necessary - but do ask if I've left anything out.
    What I did:
    - Built system with minimal HW:
         CPU & cooler, PSU, 2x2GB (slots 1 & 3), GeForce 8600, 2x250GB SATA2 HDs (ports 7 & 8 for JMicron) , 1xSATA2 DVD-RW
    - Got POST and configured BIOS:
         Load optimized defaults, reset time.
    - Added Rest of HW, got POST and configured RAID:
         - Integrated Peripherals - RAID Mode:  RAID
         - Integrated Peripherals - On-Chip ATA Devices - RAID Mode:  IDE
         - Save &  Exit
         - CTRL-J:  Built 2x250GB JMicron RAID
    - Boot to Server 2008 install DVD
         - Loaded RAID driver and installed to RAID
         - Installation continued (at a wonderfully fast pace), until it hung about 90% through
    - Tried re-installing several times, trying things like reconfiguring RAID, using different drivers, etc.
    - Then I removed the 2nd RAM in DIMM 3, and re-install completed without a hitch.
    - Booted from RAID, configured Server 2008.
    - Installed drivers for Intel P45 Chipset, GeForce 8600, Ethernet, and Audio
    - Retried having 2 x 2GB in DIMM 1 & 3, and reboot hung during Server 2008 loading bar
         - Tried DIMM in 2 & 4 with same results.  Again, system POSTs with no problem, seeing all 4GB.  But OS hangs on load.
    - Ran MemTest on each RAM separately, with no problems after an hour each.
    - Put the 1 RAM back in DIMM 1 and used LiveUpdate to successfully Flash BIOS from v1.2 to v1.6
    - Reconfigured BIOS (optimized defaults and JMicron RAID)
    - Rebooted to Server 2008 successfully with only 1 RAM in DIMM 1
         - Tried DIMM in 1 & 3 and 2 & 4, and again hung on OS load.
    - With only 1 RAM installed, the OS flies.  I did lots of application and utility experimentation to ensure all was functional and stable.   Even Defraged the RAID, so I'm pretty sure no HDD problem.
Based on all the forum posts I've read, I'm not sure about why it POSTS but doesn't load the OS, but I bet it has something to do with the mobo being unstable with the default settings for this RAM.  Seems too bad as I tried to pick a decent RAM for future OC potential.
Out of fairness, I should point out that I have not yet tried blowing away the OS and reinstalling with my only other option - XP Pro SP3 - and seeing how that fairs.  My guess is that it too will be unstable.
Fortunately, I'm still having fun tinkering - so no real frustration to speak of.  But any advice on what to do next would be much appreciated...

Finally, in response to RemusM's request, here's the CPU-Z info for Memory, SPD and CPU using the Optimized Default BIOS settings and 1x2GB in DIMM 1:
Then, I spent a late night last night browsing the forums and searching the web.  I found a dude with the same mobo, memory and an E8400.  He was having similar problems and listed some recommended BIOS Cell settings.  I put in my 2x2GB, removed the HW OC FSB jumpers on the mobo and entered the following settings into BIOS Cell and gave it a try:
    Multi-Step OC Booster:  Mode1
    DOT Control:   Disabled
    Intel EIST:  Enabled
    Intel C-STATE Tech:  Disabled
    Adjust CPU FSB Freq:  400
    Advancd DRAM Config:  (all Auto)
    Enhance Settings:  Auto
    NB Drive Configure:  Auto
    FSB/DRAM Ratio:  1:1.00  (1333:667)
    Clock Gen Tuner:  (all Auto)
    Adj PCI Freq:  Default
    Auto Disable DRAM/PCI Freq:  Enabled
CPU Voltage - ICH Voltage:  (all Auto)
    Spread Spectrum:  Disabled
Not only did now my system now boot successfully into the OS for the first time with 2x2GB installed, but it seemed stable through my OS config and application installs.  What's more, for the cost of taking the DRAM down to 800MHz, I now had the CPU at 3.8GHz!
    Here's the new CPU-Z results:
    What's next:
    - I need to further test stability by downloading and running some decent benchmarks of some type
    - I'd love to get some advice on how I could further tune the above settings for increased stability and even better performance, as the memory and CPU seem capable of more if the mobo is...
Thank you for the input and attention so far.  Please keep it coming...

Any suggestions to what might be the issue?
    Thanks,

Unfortunately I am in exactly the same situation but under slightly different circumstances.
We recently took delivery of 10 new systems, whilst developing a new/updated answer file the first two machines used have now developed this fault. They have been re-imaged several times, roughtly on its fouth deplyment the local machine entered this state
and we cant seem to get rid.
However any new system that hasn’t been used already is deploying correctly.
    Ideas?
    DHCP is MS / options:
066 Boot Server host Name: [FQDN name of the WDS server]
067 Bootfile Name: \boot\x86\wdsnbp.com  (the systems and boot file we wish to use are x64)
    FYI:
WDS is on same LAN subnet.
    WDS is Win 2008 R2
    - StatoLNL
On the 'broken' systems, try booting from USB media and then from a command prompt run diskpart and clean the disk.  Then power off and try PXE again.  I believe the clue is in the error message that the BCD store is kaput.

    Hi,
Please check if file allocation size is 4k for boot/system partition. Windows basically does not support non-default file allocation size for boot/system partition.
For more detailed information, please refer to the thread below:
Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. See the Setup log files for more information

  • NetBeans 6.1 and Java WebServer 7 problem under OpenSolaris

Hello, I have a big problem with NetBeans 6.1 (all upgrade installed) and Sun Java Webserver 7.0 (release 7.0U3 B06/16/2008 10:24); running under OpenSolaris snv_101a (2008.11 RC2).
The web server is installed into /opt/webserver7/ and run fine, but when I try to add it as a server under NetBeans 6.1 I receive the error about +/opt/webserver7/+ isn't a correct directory.
    Any hint?
PS: the NetBeans plugin for the WebServer version is 1.6

Can you report it in NetBeans mailing lists [http://www.netbeans.org/community/lists/top.html|http://www.netbeans.org/community/lists/top.html] and [http://forums.netbeans.org/|http://forums.netbeans.org/] as well?
