Problems booting OSX

I've had some strange problems in booting my iBook. When I first turn the computer on, it makes the startup chime and the "loading Mac OSX" screen appears, but then it turns into a plain blue screen. After a minute or so, a text-only screen appears, which says the following:
Darwin/BSD (my-names-ibook-g4.l) (console)
It then prompts for a login and password. When I enter this information, it says the following (substitute "my name" for my first and last names):
Last login: Wed Jul 12 09:57:33 on console
Welcome to Darwin!
my-names-ibook-g4:~ myname$
And then there is a prompt, presumably for me to enter commands. I don't know what commands to enter, though. Does anyone know how I can get the OS to boot properly - preferably without losing the contents of my hard disk or anything like that?
iBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4)

Tell him to try pressing and holding the "Option" key during startup, it should start into "Startup Manager" then he can select the Mac OS X volume to start from.
Good Luck!

  • Problems booting OSX 10.2 on a Beige G3

    Hello,
I bought a Beige G3 minitower today just to fool around with. It's a pretty decent machine, here are the specs:
    G3 292mhz
    256MB RAM
6GB HDD (have another 6GB but I need a new IDE cable)
So it came with OS 9.2.2 on it and I know for a fact that you can get 10.2 on it without issues, since it's officially supported. So I attempted that today with little success.
First, the 24x CD-ROM was having major issues, not reading CDs correctly, not booting them, nothing. So I swapped that out for a 54x drive my roommate had sitting around. So I was able to get the OSX CD to show up properly. So I get an error that OS9 can't set the Jaguar disc to the startup disc. So I need to boot it using XPostFacto (which I know isn't right). The machine boots the Jaguar CD just fine, I select what to install, etc and it goes on it's merry way.
A bit later the install finishes and I hit restart. I'm greeted by a VERY brief viewing of the apple logo followed by an indefinite circle with a cross through it. I've tried resetting the PRAM using CommandOption+OF and that didn't fix anything and I'm not sure what Open Firmware commands to use with this thing.
Any help I can get is appreciated I really don't know what to do at this point. The installation went just fine, not hiccups or anything. What should I do?

Well in the process of this discussion I found my old(ish) apple.com username! Woohoo!
Anyway so this past weekend I grabbed the OS 9.2.2 CD I had and was able to install it just fine on the G3. I made sure this time that I formatted the drive as MacOS Extended, triple checked. I also bought a new internal backup battery this weekend.
So OS9 installs just fine and I set my 10.2 disc as the startup and get the same (cannot set as startup disk) error message as before. So then I just manually set the startup disk as the CD. I get the message "no bootable HFS partition" displayed across the screen a good dozen times. What? That doesn't make sense! After all, I know I formatted as HFS!
So I just decide to go with XPostFacto to install 10.2, even though I know it probably won't work. So it installs just fine, like it did before and once more I'm greeted by the OSX circle with a cross.
So what is going on here? I know my jumpers are set correctly, there is only one hard drive in the machine, it's set as the master and is on IDE0, the CD-ROM is also set to master and is on IDE1.
Tonight I'm going to leave the backup battery out and then tomorrow hold in reset when I replace it. Hopefully getting rid of any previous settings.
If I take this thing to an apple store will they be able to help me out at all? I know they were able to help me with a wallstreet once.

  • MacBook Pro mid 2009 won't boot OSX

Since today i have a strange problem booting into Mac. This is how it started out:
I was inside of Mac, and decided to reboot to Windows, to play a match of MW2. I forgot to use the ALT button, so Mac was already booting. I used the on/off switch to turn it off before i started it again. This time i did use the ALT button, and i booted into Windows. I decided later on to boot back to OSX, and it didn't give me any problems.
I wanted to mount a DVD ISO file to watch, and when i mounted it my user account got logged off. I logged back in and tried it again, same problem.
I decided to reboot the system, but this time something wierd happend. Along with the Apple logo i got a grey progress bar, wich went till about 25%. After this bar dissapeared it was just the Apple logo with the rotating gear, and it didn't go any further.
I tried using the installdisk to repair my OSX partition, but whenever i try to repair i get the following:
    Repairing volume completed.
Updating startup support partitions where necessary.
Error: Diskaid cannot repair this disk
(original messages were in dutch, so in translated it. Could be different from the english messages)
Diskaid also shows my OSX partition as grey, instead of the normal black. I can't seem to be able to activate tis volume in Diskaid
After this i tried running Apple Hardware Test, and it didn't give me any errors.
The strange thing is that Windows(bootcamp ofcourse) runs fine. It's Mac OSX that cannot boot.
I don't have backups, and no Time Machine either. Is there a way to get my OSX back up again without having to reinstall everything? Especially because of certain installed Audio Units. I don't have the original license codes anymore of same AU's, so it would be a real pain if i need to reinstall this again.
    I'm using this mac:
    MacBook Pro 15"2,66GHz mid 2009
    500GB 7200RPM Hard Disk
Hope you can help, i really need this one to be back up as soon as possible!
    Thanks in advance!

    Your options are:
    1. DiskWarrior to rebuild the directory. Or,
    2. Erase & Install

i have problem in osx 10.8 i cannot see the encoding option while connecting to the my pc server ?
this option was in osx 10.6 see it  here
because if i create any file in Arabic name from osx 10.8 the others old mac os  see it only in unreadable letters ?
    please help
    thanks

Aw geez, they sure have messed up OSX.
Do you have a backup of 10.8.2?
    Maybe...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.

  • System problem - MAYBE OSX related...?

I have no definitive answer or resolution thus far for this
problem in the forums and wanted to re-summarize it here, one more time, to see if anyone has
any other suggestions before i toss in the towel on self-repair efforts and invest in Apple Service.
    Problem:
    On a dual MDD G4 1.25, which i normally boot/use OS 9 on)
there is now a system 'hang time' of anywhere from 15-25 secs. in various circumstances including:
On boot-up, just after the Finder has loaded, I can move the mouse cursor but the Mac won't respond to clicks for up to 15-20 secs. Then, the "buffered clicks" get executed at once.
This hang time also occurs within certain applications, and on startup of IE Explorer there is an abnormal delay between the Open command and completion of startup cycle(opening to Home Page).
At first it appears a system freeze, but then ultimately system interactivity resumes eventually.
This machine is on a high-end Tripp-Lite power conditioner in a recording studio.
The problem seemed to begin after a day where i had multiple power fluctuations/outages requiring cold reboot several times.
I have swapped out both 512 Dimms and tried running with each separately and the problem remained.
TechTools has been run, OSX Permission Repairs run/re-run..
and i've done an OS 9-only "restore/reinstall" of that
System. I also ran a defragmentation off of techtools.
    Memory 'tested' as okay.
My internal HD is a 160g, one partition.
Since the problem occurs within OS 9 and i did reinstall that system, i would tend to think that rules out the System.
I can't detect any similar problem under OSX!
Things tried that didn't resolve it:
Emptying Servers Folder in the System Folder. Desktop Rebuild, PRAM/NVRAM resets, VM Off, Extensions OFF restart, (no change), Startup Items Folder/Prefs Folder EMPTIED and restart; no change. All Devices (USB/Firewire & Cable Modem, Keyboard/Mouse) disconnected/Restart; no change.
MemTest run on Dimms; Reported as OK.
Is there any point in reinstalling Sys software given all
this, or any ideas on what else to try?
    Thanks,
    Mike

Ron, I did, (conflicting opinions about Norton notwithstanding) run a Volume/Directory test from NDD (it is
a cumbersome process given that Norton must be on a separate computer and the machine in question must be in target-firewire mode to "access" the OS 9 System Folder - since the Norton app will not startup on the MDD machine...
"Apparently," it was able to process a test and no errors
were reported after running it, or, Tech Tools, on that System Folder.
I appreciate the idea. Not sure if there's an easier way to 'get at' the folder off a Norton Utilities disk as long as it resides in the peculiar dual-boot environment which presents a variety of challenges for anyone seeking to run any type of OS 9 diagnostics from a non OSX-based startup disk... not to mention the screwy reinstall/restore configuration of this particular Apple incarnation's install disk "set."
To put it bluntly, Mac really went out of its way to discourage any OS 9 loyalists with their "last OS 9 machine"
    --but i digress....
    Thanks
    Mike

  • Boot OSX folder appears on desktop

I randomly have this folder called Boot OSK appear on my desktop. It's won't open and it won't go away unless i restart. anybody know what this is?
    here is a picture

After much research, I was unable to definitively find the cause of this. The Boot OSX folder is supposed to be created on any bootable volume, but is supposed to be hidden. I was able to reproduce the problem by switching in and out of the account using fast user switching--each time I would switch back there would be more instances of the Boot OSX folder on my desktop. This didn't seem to cause any problems, just annoying. based on other's suggestions, I contacted both SoftRAID and SuperDuper!. Both were helpful but did not have a cure (nor had they seen this particular issue). I am not suggesting that the problem has anything to do with those software products, I was just following up on other's suspicions.
The Cure (for me): Reformat each volume. I know, pain in the rear, but it did work for me. I deleted all partitions, deleted the RAID volumes, then rebuilt all from scratch. YMMV.

  • Problem with OSX remembering my network

Everytime I boot OSX Lion it 'forgets' to log in automatically to my network annd I have to do so manually by selecting my network in Airport.
I didn't have this problem in Leopard. Anyone else have this issue?

I have the same not staying logged in happening for past several days. Verizon says it's a FF problem after much investigating. I'm using Mac mini osx10.5.8 and ffv34. I have to agree because it works fine on Safari.
Can the Bugzilla folks look into this for us please?

It appears as if my startup disk has been reversed and not using the fusion ssd portion as it should.  At least its now reversed as to what it used to be originally before.  the 128gb ssd used to be on top.  Is my mac booting fusion correctly?  Thank you for responding as I was about to reformat.

  • Canon 860 Series (Pixma) Printer Problems with OSX 10.8 (Mountain Lion) – links to Canon Support Site with Drivers and Software with install tips

After spending several hours sorting out Canon Pixma OSX problems here are my thoughts:
Canon 860 Series (Pixma 868) Printer Problems with OSX 10.8 (Mountain Lion) – links to Canon Support Site with Drivers and Software with install tips
    Problem:
    - New imac and MacBook Pro 2012 (OSX 10.8.2) had a problem using Canon Pixma 868 printer on network and would not scan or print using Canon Pixma software (Pixma MP Navigator 2.1 & Photo Print), which has advanced scanning and photo printing functions.
    - When I connected the canon printer to my imac, OSX 10.8.2 automatically downloaded and installed drivers for Canon 860 series printer. I could then add the new printer (select ‘apple menu’ / ‘system preferences’ / ‘print and scan’ / “+”) and printer would work while connected via USB but could not get to print or scan over network wifi.
    - The original Canon 860 Series CD does not work with 10.8 and the manual / online instructions did not make sense (as based on CD install).
    Solution:
    1) Install Canon Printer Drivers and Software (from official Canon site)
Go to canon support site, review FAQ, then download and install following Pixma 860 Series software & drivers for OSX 10.8 (links see below). The version I downloaded is in brackets but check for updated version. Full instructions are below.
Canon 860 Series Drivers & Software  for OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion:
The base software and drivers needed for using Canon 860 Series on Mac OS X 10.8 (USB) are
    1 Printer Driver
(Canon MX860 series CUPS Printer Driver Ver. 10.67.1.0 (03-Aug-2012))
    2 Scanner Driver
(Canon MX860 series Scanner Driver Ver. 14.11.4a (03-Aug-2012))
    3 Network Tool
(Canon IJ Network Tool Ver. 4.1.0 for Intel Mac (27-Dec-2012)
Canon Software for using advanced printing and scanning functions (while connected to network)
    4 Solution Menu
    (Canon Solution Menu Ver. 1.4.1 (27-Jul-2012 ))
    5 MP Navigator EX
(Canon MP Nav EX Ver. 2.1.3 (02-Auf-2012))
    6 Easy-PhotoPrint EX
    (Canon Easy-PhotoPrint EX Ver. 4.1.6 (21-Jan-2013 ))
Canon Support (HK) – check your local site

    2. Choose a product series
      Pixma
    3. Choose a product model

    4. Choose type of document
    Downloads or FAQ
If you have problems installing the software under 10.8, see the FAQ on Canon site. You will need to allow software installs from “unidentified developers by using “Control” Key or by changing your system preferences)
    2) Check Canon Printer and Software Working while connected via USB
Once you have downloaded and installed drivers and software and restarted computer, check that the printer and Canon Pixma software (Pixma MP Navigator 2.1 & Photo Print) are working via USB.  Open the Canon IJ Network Tool App (Applications / Canon Utilities /IJ Network Tool / Canon IJ Network Tool App) and make sure you can see the Canon MX 860 series (xx.xx.xx.xx.xx.xx) and that it shows the correct SSID Wifi settings (under the Canon IJ Network Tool App ‘Setup menu’).  This is normally done as part of the automatic install but worth double checking
    3) Add new network printer using ‘apple menu’ / ‘system preferences’ / ‘print and scan’ / “+”).
After you have checked USB printing turn off printer, unplug the USB cable and shutdown the Canon IJ Network Tool App.
Then turn the printer back on and wait 30s. Then add a new printer using ‘apple menu’ / ‘system preferences’ / ‘print and scan’ / “+”). Once you select “+” (add new printer), wait 10-30s for the Wifi Networked Canon MX 860 Series printer to appear in the new window eg Canon MX 860 series (xx.xx.xx.xx.xx.xx) (Kind: “Canon IJ Network”)
DO NOT ADD THE MX 860 SERIES BONJOUR SCANNER (the Bonjour Scanner is the built-in software, is not needed and often appears first on the add printer list).  The Canon scanner can be accessed used through the MP Nav EX Ver. 2.1.3 software (which has much better functions)
You will now have two Printer Canon MX860 (USB) and Canon MX860 (Wifi / Network). Set the Canon MX860 (Wifi / Network) as default and test print and scan
If the Wifi Networked Canon MX 860 Series printer does not appear, check the printer and make sure that the printer can see the wifi network. On the printer select Menu / Settings / Device Settings / Lan Settings / WLAN Setting List.  It should say WLAN Active, identify the SSID and have an IP address
If the printer can not see the Wifi Network, plug the USB cable back in, then open the Canon IJ Network Tool App (Applications / Canon Utilities /IJ Network Tool / Canon IJ Network Tool App). Make sure you can see the Canon MX 860 series (xx.xx.xx.xx.xx.xx) and that it has your SSID settings (under setup), if it has this info, restart the computer and the printer and try again

Hi, thaks for response, meant to post as a discussion (not question), wanted to save others time if they get the same problem

  • What are the Boot OSX HDs Appearing on my Server Desktop?

    Hi,
When I login to my server (either via Screen Share or via the actual MacPro it is hosted on) I sometimes get four HDs appear on the desktop. They're all called Boot OSX and two are empty and two have com.apple.boot.S and System folders/files in them.
This happens on all local accounts on the MacPro, irrespective of them being OD accounts as well or not.
This doesn't happen all the time. It seems to appear just after I've used an account I've setup on the OD, the server's MacPro and my client iMac. This account is locked down as a simple finder with very little capabilities (so a designated person can log onto the server and eject the backup disk without going off-piste).
The only oddity I can think of about this account is that I messed about with creating a home account when setting it up in the WG Manager. Also the strictions I've put on it work when you log in from a client however when logged in from the MacPro the restrictions are in place but the simple finder and dock management doesn't seem to be reflected.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Frank.

    UPDATE:
I have four accounts on my MacPro (which hosts the server). Server/Local/Basic Administrator and Dummy Acc (SA, LA, BA and DA respectively). Only SA and DA are in the OD (as per standard server setup assistant); LA and BA are on the local account of the computer, not the server's OD.
When I login with and of the SA, LA or BA users locally, or SA remotely evrything appears as it should. It is only when I log in with DA, which is fully managed within WGM (Finder, Dock, Apps), that I get odd behaviour.
DA behaves as expected on client Macs but the Dock management settings, at least, don't appear to work when logged in on the local server machine.
Once I have logged in as DA on any machine (and then logged out or not) and then log in with any of the Administrator accounts I get this Boot OSX harddrives appearing, as previously described.
The Boot HDs then seem to no l;onger appear after some unspecified period of time with the server logged out of by all accounts.
None of this affects the performance (as much as I can tell).
Any thoughts? Is the Boot OSX some NetBoot type thing (which I haven't touched). Why is this behaviour associated with this dumb account?
    Many thanks,
    Francis.

  • I am having a problem reinstalling osx.

I am having a problem reinstalling osx. Disk utility reports the following disk errors:
    1. Unused node is not erased.
    2. Volume bitmap needs monor repair for orphaned blocks
I have tried verifying and repairing disks and get message that it cannot be repaired after 3 attempts.  Anyone encountered anything like this?
    Thanks,
    Rich.

Clean the bottom of the installer disk carefully with a soft cloth and a little bit of rubbing alcohol to take off the fingerprints, don't touch the bottom or let it get damaged.
Once it's dry then stick it in the MacBook
Hold c and reboot off the installer disk and use Disk Utility under the menu to select the hard drive makers name, then Erase tab (format HFS+ journaled) Security Option > Zero All Data and click Erase....
This will erase all the partitions on the drive and also map off all bad sectors, takes some time.
Once done quit and use the installer to install OS X.
If it fails it could be the disk is bad.

I have a stack of Sun Netra T1 AC200's. I installed them all with Solaris 8 10/01 from my

boot into single user with fex. "boot -s" then it would display the usual "Type control-d to proceed with normal startup, or give root password for system maintenance". Problem is that no matter what I type, I don't get a reaction!!
I have everything on console, and I checked that all my connectors are correct and of the type specified in the Netra user manual.
Strange thing is that halting and jumping into the LOM works without problems, same goes for kicking the system down to single user from multiuser...
I've also checked with installing Solaris 8 04/01, but same thing happens there.. I can't have three faulty machines either...
All leads and helpful hints are welcome as I've checked and checked, but can't find anything out of the ordinary...
    On beforehand thanks,
    Thomas

What does "printenv input-device" show you? My thinking is that maybe LOM might have control at this point. It should probably be "keyboard" or "ttya".
Also check that root's shell is bin/sh in /etc/passwd.

  • "Boot OSX" device in Finder sidebar

I've noticed recently that on occasion a device called "Boot OSX" appears in the devices list of the sidebar in finder, underneath physical drives, but before removeable media and mounted disk images. I can't interact with it in any way.
What's it for? Why's it there? How do I get rid of it?

"Macintosh HD" is the name of the drive inside the mac, not the name of the Mac.
To properly change the name of the Mac, go to System Preferences --> Sharing. There is a field to enter the name of the Mac.
