Problems browsing on home network on my macbook pro and Air

I own a home network and unfortunately, we are having problems browsing using Safari or Firefox on the Macbook Pro and Macbook Air. The notebooks are able to connect well and also receive emails, but its only the browsing that cannot be done.
We also have a windows based laptop which works perfectly well.
My Iphone works well too !
Can someone assist.

Go into your System Preferences > Network  Advanced>TC/IP and turn off IPv6
reboot and try again.

It will run. If you really want to game, off course you should but a 15 inch MBP and get you're Steam on, or buy a *couch* PC, or gaming console.
You could get all next-gen consoles for the price of a new MBP (well maybe all of them)
And eveyone of these options can play the games you want!

  • Syncing/mirroring data/preferences/apps between macbook pro and air

    This was probably already asked hundreds of times – but after extensive google search I still haven't found a solution that would satisfy me;
    It is about syncing ...
    To be more precise: I work on two macs (in my case a macbook pro and a macbook air) and I want to  have kind of "mirrored systems";
I want to have the same apps across the two systems with the same preferences
And of course I don't want to set it up all manually.
And programs who use librarys to manage the underlying data (like iPhoto, Together, iTunes etc.) should be synced across the two macs.
    Is that even possible?
I tried the dropbox solution for application preferences (copying the preference-files to dropbox and create simlinks in the preference folders).
But it seemed like this would lead dropbox to constantly uploading and syncing stuff (which is not necessary since I don't work on the two machines 'simultaneously') ...
Also it feels like a hacky solution which at some point could easily break.
So I thought about time machine.
But I heard that it is really slow – and I only have 128 gb on my macbook air.
Therefore I actually don't want to sync every application and every data-folder.
So what is the best solution for these problems?
Is time machine really so slow? Can't you tell the macbook air to only 'restore' part of the newest backup (made on the pro)?
    What other solutions are there?
I use the macbook air when I have to travel – so I don't need a perfect sync constantly – but before I leave the house with the air I want to get it synced properly (but as I said, not everything because it wouldn't fit on the ssd of the air) ...

Yes. You can use File Sharing between the two computers together with an appropriate backup/sync utility.

  • Network issue between Macbook Pro and Windows

    I have a Macbook Pro 2012 model running 10.8.5. Also have a Win7 PC.
When both are connected to the home router via wire (or the Windows on wireless), everything is fine from network connectivity point of view. However if I move the Mac to Wireless (either 2.4 or 5GHz), Mac can't ping/reach out the Win7 computer and vice versa. Win7 can be wired or wireless, does not matter.
I checked not only ping, but http, https, vnc protocols. None of them works when Mac is on WiFi.
I also have printer, smartphones/tablets connected to the local lan and all are accessible either from the Mac or the Windows (including the home router and internet behind it).
First I thought it should be a Windows problem, so tried to shut the firewall down on that side, but did not behaved differently. Firewall is down on the Mac all the time. And firewall was somehow ticked out with the wired test when the Mac received pings from the Windows computer.
The other reason why I thought about Windows, when I boot it up, I can ping it for a couple of minutes. Then ping breaks.
Due to the 100% success of the cable test, now I started wondering if the Mac has some misconfiguration. Any suggestion I should check?

One more comment. Wired connection seem to be stable neither. I have ping running to the Windows computer and after a couple of minutes, it gets broken.
However if I have both WiFi and cable connection to the home router and disconnect from cable (after ping is broken), I get the network to the Windows comptuer back. Nothing serious on the network change, I just get 192.168.1.x instead of 192.168.1.y as IP).
During this network switch I do nothing with the Windows computer.
This is not valid if I want to connect to the Windows computer via Microsoft sharing (smb://192.168.1.x), then it immediately breaks the connection. Can't get it back until Windows is restarted.
    Getting lost...

  • Synchronisation problems between apple mail client on a MacBook Pro and Gmail

I am having synchronisation problems between apple mail client and gmail on the MacBook Pro, but no similar problems on the ipad and iphone. My mail is not being collected by the aplle mail client on the laptop, and now all my inbox for my gmail account has disappeared, although the Archive and sub folders under "Google" are still showing.
    This is an intermittent problem.
I have previousy re-built the mailbox and solved the problem, but there must be something more fundamental going on, as the problem has occurred again.
    Anyone have any tips?

Sorry, but no. POP3 versus IMAP has nothing to do with keeping spam off your computer. Your ISP should be doing its filtering before the mail reached the mail server in either case, and your Mac would be doing its filtering after downloading the mail from the mail server in either case. (Your iPad does no filtering at all.)

  • SMC Bug on ALL Haswell-based MacBooks (Pro and Air)

There is a current SMC bug in all haswell-based macbook pros that prevents temperating reporting apps (iStat Menus, etc.) to be unable to report temperatures when the CPU is in a low-power state (i.e. idling)
    To replicate:
    1. Make sure you are running the latest version of iStat Menus (5 or latest version of 4).
    2. Notice the sensor data, temperatures, voltages etc.
    3. If the notebook is running on AC power (i.e. is plugged into Magsafe) the CPU will automatically idling at a higher step value.
    4. If the notebook is unplugged from AC power (i.e. is unplugged from Magsafe) the CPU will automatically idle at a very low step value (to conserve battery).
    5. When the CPU is in this lowest idling state, several features of the SMC become unavailable too (i.e. the ability to read temperatures, voltages, etc. and write values to control fan speeds).
So, if unplug the magsafe, with light usage, you will notice your temperatures will "freeze" and report the same temperature indefinitely. Once you plug into AC power, the temperatures, sensors, etc. will begin to update again.
I am trying to get Apple to fix this. I have tested this on Late 2013 and Early 2014 Macbook Pro's and Air's, they all do this.

    No... You are dead wrong.
This is a problem with Apple's code. Every piece of software that I have named has been updated to read the new "keys" for the new Macbook Pros. For some reason, when the CPU is in a low power state, the SMC actually powers down and refuses to respond. This is why those API calls are failing, the SMC has nothing to return. However, once the CPU speed steps up again to higher multipliers, the SMC turns back on (presumably to perform thermal management).
So before you start accusing me of accusing Apple, hear me out.
Before Haswell-based Macbooks, the SMC did not behave like this... How can this be the fault of the third-party developers?
I have been in contact with iStat Menu's developers for months now and they too have come to the same conclusion. There is nothing they can do to fix this as the problem lies at a very low level in the SMC.

  • Which of these two macbooks (pro and air) will last the longest?

I'm stumped between which of these two laptops to buy, I'll be using it daily at uni. Typical essay writing and internet browsing aswell as some garageband and probably logic use (nothing too heavy). Storage isnt an issue as I'll be buying an external hard drive without question anyway.
    Macbook Air 2013 11inches
    1.3 Ghz dual core i5
8gb ram (paying extra to upgrade)
    128gb flash storage
    802.11ac wifi
or Refurbished Macbook Pro with Retina Display 13inches
    2.5 Ghz dual core i5
    8gb ram
    128gb flash storage
    802.11n wifi
About a £100 difference between the two computers
I would prefer a laptop that is more portable and cheaper like the Air, however I'm willing to sacrifice this if the Macbook Pro is likely to last me longer. I want to get as many years as I can out of the computer. Any advice about which laptop to get? Or to take a different route?

Honestly, there is no inherent reason why one would or should last any longer than the other.  If taken care of and not abused, either one should last many years.

  • Is the "flash" storage in Macbook Pros and Airs upgradable?

I just watched an OWC video on upgrading SSD on mid 2012 Macbook Pro, is that what they consider "Flash" storage? They only say SSD, so I'm just wondering if I buy 128GB Macbook or Air can I increase it later or is it "built in" and not upgradable?

SSD = flash memory storage. There are no Apple-supported upgrades for the internal SSD/flash storage in the MacBooks, partly because Apple uses a special connector. OWC has created replacement MacBook SSD/flash drives of their own initiative, and they do work. But they are only available for some models.
Due to the special Apple design of the flash storage you will not find many options for upgrading. So far only OWC has gone to the trouble of trying to match the Apple specs.
It is still best to order a MacBook with the amount of storage you need, if available. If you do need an upgrade later, whether you will be able to will depend on whether OWC offers one for the model you have, and there is no guarantee of that. And any such upgrade will not be supported by Apple. But OWC is a good company and I have bought many products from them.

  • File Sharing between Snow Leopard MacBook Pro and Mac OS 8.6 Powerbook 1400

well ok, for some this might sound ridicule. Why should I still be using a 13 year old PowerBook. Let me tell you, this is writing/typing heaven, Zen-like; no distractions at all, no twitter, no internet (although possible), no emails just pure you and your text and if you spin down the HDD, absolute silence. as said before pure Zen writing heaven. and on top of that you're typing on the best keyboard ever on a laptop.
As you might see I love my vintage masterpiece of a laptop and use it on a regular basis. Just one Problem.
Since I Installed Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro 17" I just haven't been able to establish a connection between the two machines.
I have to admit, I'm not that versed with OS 8.6 but with 10.5 I had absolutely no problems accessing the shared folders on my MacBook Pro and vice versa.
My first thought was to activate Appletalk on the ethernet on my Macbook, which I failed to find anywhere. The Apple Discussions Forums revealed that Appletalk has been dropped with the introduction of Snow Leopard but all the entries where regarding printing issues with shared printers, I didn't find anything about actual file sharing and thus did not get any clues how to share files between my two machines.
My PowerBook 1400cs/166 runs on 8.6 and I use a Global Village Platinum PCMCIA card (modem and Ethernet combi card). this setup worked perfectly with 10.5 but I have not been able to make establish a connection since running 10.6 on my MBP.
I am really desperate since I heavily depend on being able to exchange files between those two machines through an ethernet connection.
So I kindly ask anyone who might be able to help me to please consider posting any solutions or at least ideas which could help me with my problem. I really would greatly appreciate any effort whatsoever.
Thank you very much for your time.
    EDIT:
What I forgot to mention: strangely enough, when I enable Internet Sharing on my MacBook Pro (through Airport) to Ethernet, my PowerBook 1400 can connect to the internet without any problems.
    Message was edited by: Apolloss

First of all let me thank you very much. It actually works (partially).
There seems to be a problem though. While I can connect perfectly from my MBP 10.6 to my PowerBook 1400, the other way round doesn't work.
My MBP does not show up in the Network browser of OS 8.6 but I could life with that.
The problem is that if I try to connect to my MBP from my PB1400 by entering the IP directly a alert message appears reading that the "User Authentication Method required by this server can't be found, please check the AppleShare folder in the Extensions folder and try again".
Do you have any clues what I'm doing wrong or where the problem may lie?
    PS.
Even if you may not be able to further help me with this problem, I ow you a great deal of gratitude and am very thankful for your help so far. At least I can exchange files between the two machines and that's what I needed in the first place.
