Problems burning dual layer discs using 10.3.9

Hi please can someone help!!
I am pretty knowledgeable about macs but having problems.
My mac came with a pioneer 103 superdrive and have had no problems burning CDs and DVDs with Toast 6 Titanium. Recently i wanted to back up my dvds i have bought as some you can't easily buy anymore.
So i bought an external usb pioneer 108 and some 2.4x Dual layer DVD+R Rivision discs.
When ever i burn it gets right to the end of finishing and comes up with various errors and says it may have a lead-in lead-out connectivity problem. I have installed a patchburn which recognised both dvd drives and i installed before trying to burn. I have read somewhere that OSX 10.2.9 + can burn Dual layer and i have 10.3.9.
I have tried best and 2x with no joy. I am also using the setting DVD-ROM (UDF). After the disc mounts it plays through DVD player but is really jolting and is spit out by my normal DVD player connected to my TV.
I have got the DVD info off the disc using MactheRipper and just placing the two folders Video T_S and the other on the disc. I am keeping the Name as it was orginally. I have successfully copied a DVD that was less than 4.7gb which worked on both of my dvd players with my Pioneer 103 drive that can only burn normal DVDs.
I have not tried burning any other disc formats on the Pioneer 108 but felt it was a software problem rather than a hardware.
I have looked on Pioneer.co.uk and they have Firmware's i can download for the Pioneer 108 but not sure what firmware is or does? or whether they are PC or Mac versions.
thanks for your time, hope i have given all information required, would appreciate anyones help.

You need Tiger if you want to burn DL Media using the Finder, otherwise you'll need to invest in Roxio's Toast.

  • Trouble burning Dual-Layer discs using various programs... suggestions?

Hello, I could really use some constructive, helpful recommendations here. I've been trying to burn some large (5+ GB) disc images (ISOs, but mostly VIDEO_TS files) to a Dual-Layer disc that would play on a regular DVD player.
So far I've tried a couple different DL disc brands (HP, Memorex), and various programs (Finder, Liquid CD, even Toast Titanium 10 seems to have a hard time doing so), but without much luck-- mostly just end up with coasters.
Have you had this problem trying to burn Dual-Layer discs? And what's a good freeware/shareware program or method that's done the job that you can recommend? I have at least 75GB of space on my 250GB drive (so I would imagine that's enough for any temp burn folder purposes...)
    Thanks!

I use Verbatim usually and never have any problems so try one of those if possible, but before you do run a DVD Lens Cleaner disc through it as just a small spec of dust or dirt can sometimes play havoc.
I burn most things with Toast or the Mac OS itself.

  • Why does the file size change when put into an iDVD project? And problems with dual layer discs...

I exported a short video of mine from Final Cut Express and the size of the file came out to 7.3 GB. When I put it into an iDVD project, it says that the file is only 800 MB. I tried just burning it onto a dual layer disc anyway to see if it might still burn at the original file size, but the disc came out unusable for some reason, and obviously hadn't been burned anywhere near full-capacity. So, I tried it again, and the exact same thing happened.
I guess my first question is: why is iDVD changing the size of the file? I want the quality to be the best it can be, so keeping it at 7.3 GB as opposed to 800 MB is rather important.
Secondly, why did the dual layer discs come out unusable? I've burned single layer discs before and they haven't been an issue. Also, I know for a fact that the drive can burn dual layer discs, so that isn't the issue.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can provide me with help on this issue.

Guessing here but it looks like you edited/exported an SD/DV sequence of about 30 min in FCE. DVD needs to be MPEG-2 so iDVD compresses the original file down to the size that you report.

The quality will be what the MPEG-2 compression and the software allow for. MPEG-2 is DVD standard .... there's no way around that.

Guessing again but it would seem that you burned a Data DVD instead of a Video DVD which would be unusable by a set-top player. As I said above you can't get around DVD standards.
If by any chance your video was HD originally you can try to go the Blu-Ray route using Roxio Toast or FCS 3 (discontinued) or FCP X. You will also need a Blu-Ray burner.

  • Burning dual layer discs

    Hi all,
so i finally decided to bite the bullet and divorce my PC, Windows and almost everything microsoft,
my new life with Mac is fantastic!!!
so, a little advice is what i need with me being still new to the world of mac.
last night i tried to burn a large amount of data to a dual layer disk, after it was complete it took a while to verify it, then a new window popped up saying i had inserted a blank disc?? so i ejected the cd and slid it right back in, after a minute or so and a few noises it was spat right out, do i need to use a seperate burning program in order to burn dual layer propperly??
    thnaks all!!!!

I am having problems with burning DL discs too. Below are the specs on my MBP and SuperDrive. BTW, I am trying to burn to TDK DL and have made 10 coasters, over half of those with Apple support on the line.

  • IDVD will not burn dual layer disc correctly.

I have an iMac9,1 Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66 GHz with 8 gigs of ram, with a OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5670S DVD-writable to -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW. It will not spit out a properly formated disc from IDVD. I get the "Supported disc not available" message, even though I have encoded it for dual layer in NTSC.
Has anyone ever experience problems with this? If so, what did you do to resolve it? I've burned through a half a dozen dual layer disc and these are still not supercheap.

Yes I called and my warranty was up so the nerd on the other end tried to sell me the applecare protection program. I guess my next step is to go to an apple store, but as the person that replied last in that discussion said time is an issue. I guess my biggest problem with this whole thing is that it is obviously the update that messed up all of these superdrives, so warranty shouldn't be an issue. Apple even removed the download link: http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20070716082804520&query=superdrive

  • Problems burning dual layer DVD's

we have had lots of problems trying to burn dual layer dvd's. Single layer has been fine but is there some secret trick for getting dual layer to work? we have tried both the internal dvd burner and an external one and both are supposed to be dual layer capable.

about half of the ones we try get about half way through and then say media sense error (or similar wording) some of the others look like they have burned fine and then when it is writing the last little bit it just stops, this results in discs which are unreadable. The others look like they've burned fine and then don't play one of the items on the DVD once it is put in the machine.
Those that do play appear to stop about the level of the switch of layers.

  • Problems burning dual layer DVDs - help...please

I'm trying to burn a movie onto a dual layer (8.5gb) DVD but my 12" G4 Powerbook doesn't like it. It doesn't recognise the DVD and spits it back out after 30 seconds or so of strange noises, whirring etc. Burning onto regular 4.7gb DVDs seems to work OK, so am I doing something wrong? Can anyone help? FYI the media is DVD +R dual layer, made by Emtec (BASF).
    Powerbook G4 12   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Well I certainly am no expert on media, but I went to Apple's store to look at the PowerBook's spec's. On the 12" it says "Slot-load 8x SuperDrive (DVD±RW/CD-RW)" and then on the 17" it says "lot-load 8x SuperDrive (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)." So it appears to me that the 12" does not support dual-layer discs. I know that it doesn't have a dual-layer burner, but perhaps it will not even let you do a dual disc one side at a time. Not sure, just guessing.

DiskUtility has the 2.4x speed set but its grayed out - the above suggests that DiskUtility is trying to burn at 47x but as the speed setting is grayed out I cannot reduce the speed in any way.
Anyone had this before - I have used this brand of disc before and its from the middle of a box which has been fine.

I'm not convinced this is a hardware issue. My logs definitely point to a software-based bug.
The clue that points to a software issue is this snippet from your log. Did anyone at the Genius bar comment on it?

Read the second posting. It gives a fantastic argument for not doing anything on the computer after you press the "burn" button in the finder.
It resolved this error for me:
Finder: Verify started, Thu Mar 12 17:47:35 2009
Finder: Discrepancy in block 300 at byte 79.

Finder: Verify error: 0x80020063 Verification of the burn failed.
Also be sure your computer is burning at the proper speeds. Previously I was recieving this message:
Finder: Requested burn speed was 47x, actual burn speed is 8x.
Which is false because I intentionally picked to burn at 4x. After updating to 10.5.6 and repairing permissions suddenly, the log was appearing correctly as this...
Finder: Requested burn speed was 4x, actual burn speed is 4x.
You can see logs of your dvd/cd burning by opening Console (use spotlight to search for it) and looking under "LOG Files". The file is named DiscRecording.log in the console app.

  • Trouble Burning Dual Layer Discs

I have recently installed the Samsung SH-S202N. I have Toast 9. I have tried to burn +R DL discs several times now, and they simply stick at around 2% complete. I then can't force quit toast or eject the disc.
I looked on the Samsung site for firmware updates, but there are currently none.
    Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
    Ben

I have had an issue with the Toast display getting stuck while the burn is actually completed; it'll say 18% completed forever, but the "time remaining" continues to tick down, and eventually I have a disc. Don't suppose that is your case? The latest Tiger upgrade may have whacked roxio software pretty hard, I am having lots of roxio trouble now.
As always, delete the toast plist in preferences, restart.
Internal superdrive or external after market burner? Toast is pretty good with after market externals. I gotta say. Also never use a hub or daisy chain on an external burner.. always connect directly to mac.

  • MBP C2D - Problems burning Double Layer Discs

I encounter massive problems when trying to burn DVD+R DL Discs. The MBP C2Ds internal drive is supposed to burn DL media but the only way to burn them is under win xp using my external philips ED16DVDS usb2 burner. Nero produces coasters using the internal matshita burner.
Under Mac OS Toast as well as Mac OS X give me error messages before starting to burn.
The Media I use is called intenso DVD+R double layer. Intenso media has worked exceptionally well for my needs over the last years. This is no cheap stuff.
I am thankful for any suggestions.

  • Problems burning dual layer

I created a project in iDVD which was 4.8 GB and tried burning it on a Memorex and Verbatim DVD+R DL. In both cases the project burned and in the last 3 minutes the disc ejected and said done but the burn progress bar was still spinning. I reinserted the disc and it said 3 minutes remained but the bar continued spinning. I tried several times and none of the discs played on either a DVD player or on my computer. I spoke to a supervisor at Verbatim who told me to update my firmware and the problem would be solved. I went to the Apple store and we tried to update the burner but it was determined that the burner was already updated with version 2.1. Any thoughts on how to solve this problem?

The few times I've made DLs, I've created a disc image and then burned to Verbatim DVD+R DL at a slow speed like 2X. You might get a warning about the breakpoint when the disc image begins. I've never had a problem.

  • Exporting to burn dual layer disc from FCP

    Greetings,
I have a 90 minute HD show that is 5.7 gigs after compression, do I need to export the show in two parts in order to burn a two sided disc, or does the toast software or any other disc burning software recognize and splits it accordingly.

Is this meant to be a regular DVD or a HD DVD (the kind that only play on those obsolete Toshiba machines that lost the fight with BluRay)?

  • DVD Burns Dual Layer gives Scrambled Results & Crashes OSX!

    Hello,
I'm using Disk Utility in Leopard to try and copy a DVD dual layer. The method I use is create DVD Master image using disk util, then burn to Dual Layer disc using Disk Util again. I've tried DL +R and -R from Verbatim, Imation, a No-Name brand, TDK, and the result is all the same - the DVD when played back on a Sony DVD player is all scrambled and jerky. The source DVD is fine.
Also if I try and play the burnt DVD in Leopard DVD Player, the whole MacBook freezes and requires power off to reset it!
    Anybody else seen this before?

    KimonoW wrote:

This could be due to your DVD Player not being able to play DL burned media. Mine places burned SL DVD's no problem, but balks on DL DVD's. Won't even load them. Does the original DVD have DRM enabled on it? If so, then that is most likely the problem. Most movie DVD's have it enabled now a days, and some computer games (like The Sims for example) have it enabled too.

No clue, sounds like a kernel panic. What happens if you try to run the DVD on another machine?

  • Error Message Said to Use Dual-Layer Disc - How Can I Know the File Size?

This is my first attempt at using iMovie. I used slides, added a music and speaking track over it.
I would like to reduce the size to a standard DVD rather than using expensive dual-layer discs. How do I determine the size?
My Mac is only 80 GB, is that a problem?
    Thanks,
    Carlos Marques

It seems as if perhaps you've clicked, in iMovie, on 'File' and 'Burn Project to Disc...' instead of Exporting to iDVD.
When you Export to iDVD, your project ought to easily fit on a DVD.
But if you've chosen 'Burn Project to Disc...' that doesn't make a playable DVD ..it creates a backup data disc, and, as Fred suggests, if you're using large or detailed photos, that may need a lot of space ..much more than when using iDVD to make a playable video disc.
(..iDVD compresses everything so that anything up to one or two hours' worth will fit on a 4.7GB DVD, as Fred described. Burning a Project to a disc just copies all the data that's in your iMovie project without compressing anything; without converting hi-resolution photos to the low resolution of a movie. That may be why it's suggesting that you need a Dual-Layer disc if you did choose 'Burn Project to Disc...' by mistake..)

  • Can't Burn Dual Layer BD Disc with Share Option

I burn bluray discs from FCP 7 using the "share" option, and each time I do it, it's a crapshoot whether it will work or not, particularly with dual layer discs (50GB) as is the case now.
Bacially, after waiting the 15 hours for the files to output, I am greeted with the following message: "There was an error burning your disc.  Please check to see if your boot volume has sufficient space."  At that point I try reloading the disc and click "Try Again", but the same thing appears.  I know I have more than sufficient space on my hard drive, as well as on the bluray itself (the H.264 video file is only 26gb).  I also load the BD disc proir to starting the Share as I've been told that this is how the program knows you have a large enough disc capacity.
Here are the specs of what I'm using.  Perhaps they can offer some insight:
iMac Intel Core Duo with most recent Snow Leopard
Buffalo BRHC-6316 Bluray/HD DVD Combo Drive
Verbatim Dual Layer Recordable 50GB Disc (6x speed)
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Thanks!

SHORT ANSWER: Try a different BRAND of BD-R. Worked for me!
LONG ANSWER: I wanted to be sure to post on this older thread because I just experienced this same error/problem burning blu ray out of FCP7 through the share function. I've been doing it successfully for years now, so when the "error" popped up (and kept popping up) I was surprised and dismayed. The GOOD NEWS is I found a solution. After trying the operation on several Macs (Mac Pro tower and a MacBook Pro), and after getting the error in both places, I was quickly of the mind that it couldn't be a boot memory issue. Neither of the Macs had any memory deficiencies. So, my next guess was it was the media itself. I purchased some Memorex single layer 25GB disks and... problem fixed. For your information, the disks that gave me the error were WINDATA BD-Rs (they don't say how many G they are) purchased at Micro Center. I will say they were cheap and the Memorex were not (so I suppose in this case it is true you get what you pay for). Hope this helps somebody!
