Problems calibrating large CRT monitors

Hi All
I have a SP 1.8GHz G5 Power Mac, 1.25GB RAM GeForce FX 5200 Graphics card.
I have recently been trying to find a larger Monitor and not being the richest individual on the planet I have been looking at 21" CRT's. So far I have tried two second hand items, a Dell P1130 and a Sun Microsystems unit. Up until now I have had no colour problems with any monitor I have used. My first an Apple 1705 17", and more recently a Proview 19". Both of these monitors cali brated OK and gave good colour reproduction. However both of the larger monitors I have tried have given problems. The Dell, Model P1130 gave a green/blue colour cast on the picture, the Sun of which I don't know the model No. gave a pink colour cast. No amount of callibration would remove the colour casts from either monitor.
I am concerned that there may be a problem with my graphics card as I don't understand why I should be having these problems considering the colour I get from my current monitor is excellent. The problem being the monitor is faulty and needs replacing.
Is there anyone out there who can throw any light on why I might be having these problems?!
Thanks in advance...

I had a 'yellow' 22" iiyama for years, well 2 and a half; it was one of a pair and eventually I relised it wasn't differences in the graphics cards at all but the monitor which was just darker and yellower than the other. I got round it for that time by using the monitor's own controls to evenout the differences: setting the hardware colour temp very high etc.
Fortunately, iiyama being iiyama, when i rang them they replaced both monitors with new ones, after 2 and a half years! This was all the more remarkable because it contrasts so strongly with apple who only replaced my g5 because it broke within the first 14 days of use: a day later and it would have been sent off for repair; which from what i gather that could have taken weeks.
Try your monitor's hardwar controls.

  • Calibrating PAL CRT monitor and Macbook Pro Screen

    Hi,
Can anyone offer any tips on how to calibrate a monitor and the macbook pro screen for PAL colours.
On my monitor you can adjust the brightness, contrast and the colour temp (which is set to 6500). You don't seem the be able to adjust the colour, for example make it black and white, unles you can do that by lowering the colour temp.

... but the MXO won't help the OP with his MacBook Pro screen.
True, but he did say that he wanted to not only calibrate the MacBook Pro, but another monitor as well...
Can anyone offer any tips on how to calibrate a monitor and the macbook pro screen for PAL colours.
Just offering a suggestion...not knowing what that other monitor was.

  • New dual mac pro using fcp studio doesn't see external crt monitor

I recently invested in a system to re-edit film and set up my system...dual editing up is fine I put my larger dell monitor through the 3870 which is in bay one and the browser comes up on the 2nd monitor connected to the 2600 in bay 2.
The problem is I can't get my EXTERNAL VIDEO out go to the crt monitor...this is connected by svideo that's on the 3870 which my primary monitor is connected to. Under "video playback" there's no option to choose "apple firewire" the only thing on that menu is the "digital cinema desktop preview" and only those choices, the same under my audio/video settings under the "final cut pro" menu. Theres no option I see on here either for mirroring under the playback menu either am I looking in the wrong place?
This appears to be a software issue as I'm not seeing the other options under video playback to even recognize the dv connection to my primary monitor...I've seen commentary in other logs to try deleting preferences but which ones?
The crt monitor is seen under my apple hardware, I can move things in and out of it...only in final cut pro I can't get external monitor on it...and when I choose this cinema choice the picture comes up on my main monitor but only as a still it doesn't seem to allow me to choose "all frames" in any case.
My main concern right now is to get this external monitor to be read by final cut PLEASE HELP thanks!

Got the "apple firewire ntsc" choice to show up even if grayed out and "missing" under "audio/visual" menus by recreating choices in Easy Setup under "final cut pro" MENU thank GOODNESS because I was reading horror stories on here about this under another thread with someone trashing preferences, reinstalling and the works and still not getting it to show up...on my search now for an analog/digital converter up at b&h...find it odd that the s video connector wouldn't show the crt monitor when I put both displays through the 3870...I switched it back to see if it worked again when only the one dell monitor display was there and there it is again mirroring the screen display on my desktop...just can't be seen as an "external monitor" in fcp...couldn't find anything specific in the shane ross threads to this. I'm sad the program doesn't just see the s video connection though the 3870 though my computer does fine and will query up at b&h in regard to what might be affordable as far as a digital/analog converter. It's also weird in itself that when I put the two dell monitors on the one card my computer no longer could see the s video crt connection...makes no sense. Will report in later as to what I discover up at b&h as I'm sure there's a world of people out there using this sony crt monitor still even into the upgrades with computers and software so I imagine therein lies the solution. Thanks again and I'll report in as to what hardware might be suggested for me.

  • KONA 3 will not playback on CRT Monitor

    Hi
I am having problems with playback of clips and sequences in a DVCPRO HD 720p50 project. When I view clips on a JVC CRT monitor, via SDI out, using the 625i 25 down conversion feature in the KONA control panel, I only get a still frame until I stop playback at which point the frame updates to the current frame. Strangely, if I drag the playhead through the clip I can see the clip playing fine.
I have made sure that 'External Video' setting in FCP is set to all 'All Frames'.
I've made sure that the Video Playback option is set to AJA Kona 720p 50 8 bit (1280X720).
The Kona 3 Control Panel has been set up the recognise the 720p50 frame setting and down convert to 625i25(PAL) for output to the SD CRT monitor.
The only time I get proper playback on the monitor is when I set FCP video playback to AJA Kona 720p25 8 Bit DVCProHD(1280x720). However I get an awful strobe effect on the monitor.
I'm wondering whether the KONA presets even support this type of project/clip as nowhere can I find a preset that recognises my frame size - 960x720. The footage was shot on the Panasonic HVX200.
Any help would be really appreciated as I've spent many hours trying to find the right settings
    Thanks

I suspect that the cameraman recorded the material at 720p50 PN. This uses less space on the P2 card or Firestore, but the footage has a timebase of 25 fps, which apparently the Kona card doesn't handle.
Ask the camera person to record at the normal 720p50 setting on the camera, and the normal P2 or Quicktime setting on the recording media.
As for the footage you already have, there is a method in Compressor, to get it to 50fps.
For the setting select Advance Format Conversion - DVCPRO HD 720p60, and in the inspector Encoder (2nd button from the left) for the video settings select "Custom" and type in "50"
(By the way, this is also a workaround if you don't have FCP 6 and the new Frame Rate Converter to make a nice slow motion. After you get it to 50fps use Cinema Tools to conform the footage to 25 fps and it makes it play at 50 percent speed)
(Disclaimer - I have only a little experience with the HVX200, but this is what has worked for me.)

  • Great CRT Monitor for Mac Mini

Having purchased a Mac Mini a few weeks ago I was horrified to read all the posts on this site reporting problems with monitors. In need of a new CRT monitor I asked the folks at Mac Zone for a recomendation and then placed an order for the 17" Viewsonic Ultra Brite E70F+ ($130 something).
When the monitor arrived a few days later I took it out of the box, plugged it into the Mini using the adaptor supplied by Apple and turned it on.
The rest, as the saying goes, is history! A great monitor and it works with the Mini (or at least My Mini) without a hitch.

Whatever you buy under these many criteria, I strongly suggest you try before you buy.  If that is not possible, get written commitment that all features you must have are compatible with your Mac.

  • I have a dv7-6b32us .. i am using a crt monitor which i know supports 120hz.. video driver doesn't

    I have a dv7-6b32us laptop...
Operating system is windows 7 home premium 64 bit..
The problem I'm having is.. I have it hooked up a CRT monitor that I know supports 120hz easy at the resolution I want to run my games in.. can easily run 240.  My issue is since I'm on windows 7, it now caps my max hertz at 85.  Which is a complete joke.  If I have to do some regedit or edit some system files.  Please point me in the right direction..
Or if there is something simpler as in a driver that allows it, would always be nice.  the video is the INTEL HD 3000
    Any help is much appreciated.

  • CRT monitor to add on

I have a flat scrn and now an additional CRT monitor to add on to my G5 to have a larger desktop to work with. Where do I start? How do I know if an ADC-VGA adaptor will work? And how do I set it up ?
    Thanks,

Hello! It should work by just hooking the cable up to the monitor using the dvi to vga adapter. Open the system prefs and click on displays and then arrangement and start using it! I've got a 24" Gateway LCD and a 22" Dell running off this old 9200 radeon. Tom

  • Images appear bright on my iMac but dark on CRT monitor

When I look at images on my early 2006 20" intel iMac they appear ok but when I view them on a mac with a CRT monitor they are really dark. I have lowered the brightness of the screen but it won't go dark enough. Is this a known problem or is it just mine?

    Hi Andrew,
    Welcome to Discussions
When you plug the CRT into the iMac, open system preferences. Go to the "displays" section. Make sure that 1. the brightness on the external monitor is high, and 2. that the refresh rate (because it's a CRT) is set high enough (at least 60 Hertz).
    Also...
How old is the CRT? I've noticed that the older the CRT monitor, the dimmer it gets. At least that's just my experience.
    Hope this Helps

  • Using CRT Monitor Only

I just attached my 19 inch IBM C92 CRT monitor to my iMac G3/400. The picture appears on both monitors? How can I turn off the iMac monitor, so that only the IBM is working?. The IBM monitor is far superior. Thanks, Ken.

With that old of a computer, the options are few.
If you can sleep just the internal display and keep the
external one on, or dim the internal and not have the
external 'mirror' every detail on the iMac's, that could
do the trick. However, 'mirror' displays is what it does.
There had been some kinds of display hacks that had
some followers (and detractors who found problems)
so that idea, to attempt to hack the display code to
have an external display do more, may not be an idea.
A screen span doctor (extended desktop) patch will
NOT work on the iMac G3 and other computers. That
was originally a hack for some portable Macs from the
website at rutemoeller.com with a workaround.
The other possible software that may work, may not on
that CRT iMac model since the graphics processor and
other items don't work the same way as newer ones.
Switch Res X: (control panel options for some Macs)
    older versions: http://www.madrau.com/download/oldies/oldies.php
(The newest Switch Res X4 is for OS X newer than 10.4)
In some situations, people have tried to dim the internal display
or have it somehow 'sleep' but in the older iMac CRT G3, this
tends to make the external one mirror the internal, too. To cover
    over a warm-running CRT may create a heat problem in the Mac;
so perhaps to not have the iMac were its internal display is visible
while viewing the better quality external, is about all you can do(?)
And it is very inconvenient to open the case and unplug the CRT
so only the external will work. If you were to make a hack tower
out of the iMac G3 and forgo the CRT altogether, then you could
choose any display including LCDs as the main one...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Unique Calibrations for Dual Monitors

I am currently using a MacPro1,1 with a single NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT card. I have two monitors attached to the card - an Apple 30" Cinema and a 21" Samsung SyncMaster. I color calibrate my Cinema display with an EYE-One calibration device. I can not calibrate the SyncMaster with my current setup as it only allows one calibration and that applied to both displays on the one card.
I am now looking to upgrade to a new MacPro and although I've spoken to both Apple and AMD I can not get a decisive answer as to whether or not the ATI 4770 and/or the ATI 4870 allow the unique color calibration of each monitor attached to the card.
Any feedback will on this issue will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you rav2o and Denis for your responses - both different and both helpful. rav2o, your response made me realize I should have looked at the problem a little more creatively when I first installed the second monitor and your method should certainly work if the new configuration doesn't allow dual calibration. Denis, your comments indicate my EYE-One may be a little out of date (or at least the software or it isn't capable of handling dual configurations - something to consider when I upgrade my system.

  • CRT monitors

Can anyone recommend a good pro quality CRT monitor for photo editing that I can connect with my MacBook. I want a big one - 22-23 inch.
I know this is slightly off topic but I figured that you fellow photographers would be able weigh in on this.

    Hi,
I knows some colourists who seem to like the NEC Multisync FP2141SB for some reason, I don't know if it is still available as it is quite an old model.
I have two Lacie 19IV CRTs on my two machines and keep then calibrated for Final Cut Pro and Aperture.
But what ever CRT you get make sure you get a calibrator, they are not so expensive these days.

  • I have connected my new Macbook Air to my existing Samsung large external monitor with a VGA adaptor but I can't get the full mac desktop to display. No icons but then websites are coming up. Help!

I have connected my new Macbook Air to my existing Samsung large external monitor with a VGA adaptor but I can't get the full mac desktop to display. No icons but then websites are coming up. Help!  Further info:  I am a complete newbie to Mac.  Had three macs prior to 2000 then four PCs.  Just come back and struggling a bit with the unfamiliarity. On my old PC laptop I could simply switch from the laptop screen to the large external monitor (and back)  with the F4 function key.  While I can get the background image from my MBA to display, that's it.  Until I noticed on the far left of the external monitor, the very edge of one of the web pages I was on.  So Idragged it over to display in the centre.  But that's all that's there.  And now I have gone out of those web pages but they are still displaying on the monitor.  There is some wierd disconnect.  I'm sure it is just a setting thing.  Will keep searching for answer but any advice welcome!

Your dsplay is getting extended onto the external monitor. Chcnage the setting to duplicate it or only display on the external monitor and you should be fine,
Let me know if this worked for you.

  • Problem with  large databases.

Lightroom doesn't seem to like large databases.
I am playing catch-up using Lightroom to enter keywords to all my past photos. I have about 150K photos spread over four drives.
Even placing a separate database on each hard drive is causing problems.
The program crashes when importing large numbers of photos from several folders. (I do not ask it to render previews.) If I relaunch the program, and try the import again, Lightroom adds about 500 more photos and then crashes, or freezes again.
I may have to go back and import them one folder at a time, or use iView instead.
This is a deal-breaker for me.
I also note that it takes several minutes after opening a databese before the HD activity light stops flashing.
I am using XP on a dual core machine with, 3Gigs of RAM
    Anyone else finding this?
    What is you work-around?

    Christopher,
True, but given the number of posts where users have had similar problems ingesting images into LR--where LR runs without crashes and further trouble once the images are in--the probative evidence points to some LR problem ingesting large numbers.
I may also be that users are attempting to use LR for editing during the ingestion of large numbers--I found that I simply could not do that without a crash occuring. When I limited it to 2k at a time--leaving my hands off the keyboard-- while the import occured, everything went without a hitch.
However, as previously pointed out, it shouldn't require that--none of my other DAMs using SQLite do that, and I can multitask while they are ingesting.
But, you are right--multiple single causes--and complexly interrated multiple causes--could account for it on a given configuration.

The same code is used in modify mode also. web application is sending all 3 lines in modify mode even if single line is modified. It is already decided to send all rows back from web application to SAP in same sequence. It is working fine if i comment 5 lines which is starting with *. But in modify mode, how can i ensure that correct row is modified? and how can i achieve problem of large no of lines on screen? Please suggest?

    Hi yogesh,
how can i ensure that correct row is modified?
    1. For this we need to know two things ;
       a) the database table in which the entries are already stored
       b) the sequence in which they are displayed in the transaction.
    2. So before changing any line, we need to compare (the primary key values / important values)
       a) as per the database table and as per the incoming data from web application (using bapi)
      b) if the match is ok, it means that particular row was not modified, else modified.
how can i achieve problem of large no of lines on screen?
    1. For this I am  not sure about the transaction and its screen. Manytimes for appending row on the screen,
there is a PLUS + button on the grid toolbar. So for every entry, (inspite of some empty/filled rows already visible on the screen), we should use the + button, and this new row always appears on the top i.e. row number 1.
    hope this helps.
    regards,
    amit m.
