Problems Capturing Footage

I'm trying to capture two hours from a DVCam tape in Final Cut Pro. With the first drive I used it would stop after 00:09:25:15 and say insufficient disk space even though there was 200 gigs available on the drive. I captured 16 clips that were all 00:09:25:15. But when I tried to play them a messaged popped up saying Frames were dropped. I tried to capture again with a different hard drive, and it ran for a while then popped up a message "Dropped Frames were detected during last capture attempt" and won't give me a clip. Could it be the tape?

Sounds like your drive is formatted in FAT32. As Nick suggests, format in OS Extended Journaled then it will capture longer segments. Be sure to copy off any other important data first. Also, make sure the drive is at least 7200 RPM.

  • Problems capturing footage from my Panasonic NV-GS 500

    Hi,
I know this has been discussed a 1000 times... However, I didn't find an answer to my specific issue: I have bought me a used Panasonic NV-GS 500 Mini DV camera. Before that, I had a NV-GS 320, which worked fine.
With the 500 camera, I don't succeed in capturing footage. Final Cut Express recognizes the camera, but it doesn't capture upon pressing the "Direct" button in the Capture menu.
What could be the problem here?
    Thanks for your help,
    Michael

Have you got tape in the camera and is it wound to the beginning - not the end ?
Is your Easy Setup OK ?
Try trashing the preferences exactly like this:-

  • Problem capturing footage

While capturing footage, I have received an error message called a "debug event" that includes a path to a particular file and the code cpp-94.
The program freezes and then I lose everything.  I cannot capture any footage- so basically I am unable to use CS5.  I used the trial version for a few weeks- but now that I have installed the "real version" I have been stuck ever since.  Can anyone tell me what is going wrong?

  • Problems capturing footage from camera - please help!!

Hello. I have recently purchased Final Cut Express 4 to work with some footage shot last July, but am unable to capture it at all. My computer seems not to recognize my camera. I shot the footage on a Sony HDR-HC3E in HD DV. I have tried to connect the camera to my computer but it does not appear to recognize that anything has been connected to it at all. Is there something that I am missing?

The HC3 is an HDV camera that can shoot DV. Just to be clear, you shot in HDV not DV, is that correct?
Make sure you have the correct output from the camera. Make sure you have the correct settings in FE. Make sure you are daisy-chaining the camera through the drive.
Trash your preferences and launch the application. Does the application recognize the camera? If not do not launch the capture window. Check if system profiler recognizes the camera is attached and what camera it is.

  • Problems capturing onto an external harddrive

I just got a new Lacie Brick external harddrive, and looking around these forums, it seems that was a bad choice. I have no problem capturing footage right onto my computer, but when I try to capture onto the Lacie then Finalcut freezes and won't shut down. Is there any way to fix this or should I just get a different harddrive?

    > However, it
can be used as a back up drive....
    And an excellent one too!
There's a lot of rubbish talked about LaCie external hard drives - my "Big Disk" 500 GB unit has worked hard, flawlessly for a year or so now.
Unfortunately (maybe because they're small) hard drives get moved around and abused during use. If they aren't fan cooled, they can overheat if there isn't free air space (and common sense) around them.
Moving an external HD while it's working is a pretty sure way to wreck it - and so is allowing it to get too hot.
Use your brick - it's a pity it isn't Firewire but it will still be a valuable asset to you for backup as X said.

  • Problem capturing 50p footage

    Hi,
I was trying to capture footage shot on JVC 200 series into FCP 6.0.2 without FCP making new clip on start/stop detect. With this option selected or not FCP still made new clips. As the deck is slow to respond I'm then losing up to 6 secs of my logged clips as it "searches for media"
Anyone else experience the same issue?
    Many thanks in advance
    Shane

I'm having the exact same problem. It says "searching for media" sometimes when the camera changes and not necessarily when the timecode changes. I've tried everything I can think of and i really need some advice.
    Thanks

  • FCE not capturing footage

I am using FCE 3.5.1 on a G5 Dual Processor using OX 10.4.10. I can not capture video to FCE from my two Sony DV cameras. FX1 and TRV 22. This just started after years of no problems. I have pulled preferences and reinstalled FCE several times. But the problem continues.
I can operate the camera, but it acts as though there is no time code on the tape. The time code on the tape is fine as I have captured this footage on other systems.

    G'Day Mate
Thanks for the reply. I have tried the Quicktime Receipts removal, but did not solve the problem. Only had one Quicktime pkg listed. It did have numbers. While I was there I pulled the FCE HS pkgs as well with numbers.
FCE HD does recogizine the cameras and will control it from Capture, but does not capture footage correctly. With clips it pays no attention to cues in and out. In "now" it will freeze the picture while continuing to record the sound.

  • Capturing footage from Canon XH A1

    Hi All -
I'm a bit new to Final Cut Express but ran across the following problem:
When I try to capture footage from my Canon XH A1 HD video camera, FCE does not recognize that there's any connection or that the camera is plugged into my MacBook Pro via the firewire cable. When I plug in my Sony VX2100 it does recognize this camera and I'm able to capture footage when I use that camera, but no luck with the Canon.
Funny thing is, when I try to capture footage from my Canon using iMovie it recognizes the camera and captures the footage with no problem.
Any idea why FCE is not recognizing this camera when iMovie does? Is there a setting on FCE that needs to be changed?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!!

Are you using the correct Easy Setup?
Normally it should be HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i50 (or i60 if you are using NTSC).
I believe your Canon is an HDV camera whilst your Sony shoots DV.
They both need different Easy Setups. iMovie deals with this automatically.

  • FCE: Capturing footage from my Canon XL1

Got FCE and when capturing footage from my Canon XL1 I get the video however there is no audio!
Tried capturing footage via iMovies and works no problem!
Not sure if this has anything to do with it but I'm using a external mic. on my XL1 into one ch. on the audio inputs. Also scratch disks is on a external 1TB WD drive. Finally tried virtually all the set-ups on the 'easy set-up' but still no joy.
Can anyone throw me a life line on this one?!

sorry I should have made myself abit clearer.....when the tape is played back in my XL1 I can hear audio when my headphones are pluged into the camera also the camera has audio monitors which I can see movement verifying there is audio. However in FCE I don't see any audio level movement.
In terms of equip. I just have a external WD 1TB drive (USB), firewire cable for video camera and the USB cable for the keyboard & mouse.
Additional application: Flip video s/w (however had fce issue prior to installing this).

  • Premiere shows artifacts in screen-captured footage

    Hi,
I get artifacts in my screen-captured footage (camstudio, lossless codec) that doesnt seem to appear on other peoples systems. tried different framerate-settings in camstudio, but always get premiere displaying it faulty.
Premiere also tells me that there are several empty frames in my footage, although AfterEffects and the win media player preview it without problems.
Export from AE gives the same results though..
I record at 1024x768 with 30fps and also use these settings for my project. i also set square pixels, progressive-scan, 30fps-timecode, videoforwindows and no compression (same prob w lossless codec)
im definitely a newbie so don't hesitate to point out the most obvious mistakes one could possibly make :) thanks for your time!

Well, in general this seems to work.
one more question though: I foolishly captured some footage at 200fps which I will hardly be able to shoot again. now when i let VDub revamp it to 30fps it just seems to play my 200fps footage at a 30fps rate, which is of course too slow. is that what the video>framerate option in VDub actually does, just stretch the footage?
I figured, i'd just take the original 200fps footage to AP and let it export to a 30fps clip. seems to work if i use the indeo compression.
    recapitulating (for who ever cares):
    - original capture: 1024x768 at up to 200fps...
    - taking it to VirtualDub for recompression to huffyuv, to get rid of artifacts
    - exporting from AP at 30fps with Indeo codec
awesome so far. any tips on improvement? thanks for now anyway!

  • Capturing footage and audio is off sync?

I'm capturing footage and then play it back on the timeline. I notice that the audio is off sync, why is that? I use Sony DVCAM Deck to capture without altering the setting, in Final Cut Pro 6, and the audio became off sync. Any solution?
    Thank you
    Luis

Is it consistently off-sync? Like is it always 2 frames off? Or does it trail off, like it starts in sync and then it drifts out of sync after several seconds? I recently captured a bunch of stuff that was recorded with a DVX100 and the audio was 2 frames ahead of the video (sometimes it seemed like it was only 1 frame off, but 99% of the time it was 2).
Then another problem that crept up was when it got to the end of a tape, which would confuse Final Cut. It would stop, and then make the last clip captured play at 29.97 when it should have been 23.98, though the audio would play back normally. So it would appear to be in sync for a moment and then it would get way out of sync very quickly. What I had to do then was just babysit the capture of the last scene on the tape and stop it before it got to the end.

  • Capturing footage in FCP7

Just up-graded from FCP6 to FCP7 and upgared operating system from 10:4 to 10:6 and uploaded latest version.
I've been working on an HD project in FCP6 and loaded clips with NO problems.
However, FCP7 crashes every time I've tried to capture new footage from camera. Tried to capture footage previously captured from camera in FCP and crashes again.
However, footage seems to capture in iMovie but unable to transfer to FCP.

Take a look at this especially deleting the user preferences.

  • Problem Capturing - Out of Disk Space

I posted this in another thread, but after trying various things, I realized my problem was different. I need to capture about 38 minutes of video to my computer. My external HD (which I'm capturing to) has 43.43 GB free and my internal HD has 9.55 GB free. I read that the internal HD needs to have at least 10% free. It's an 80 GB HD, so I have more than 10% free. When I go to capture, after about 9 and a half minutes, it gives me an error saying that there's not enough disk space. When I go to my external HD to delete the partial video I captured, it's almost exactly 2 GB. It seems to stop capturing at 2 GB for some reason.
Sorry if this is posted already, but I need to figure this out ASAP.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

    Thanks for the replies...
@2reverb - my external HD is formatted for FAT32 so I can use it on Windows machines, too. This has never caused a problem with capturing footage.
@gogiangigo - my capture limit is turned off and my minimum allowable free space is 1024 MB.
Yes, I am using Capture Now.
My external HD stays at a steady 45 GB (roughly) at the rate that I start and finish projects.
@Studio X - if that's the case, is there a way to reinstall QuickTime? I don't think I can afford to reinstall my OS (considering the amount I need to backup won't fit on my 43.43 GB external).
I would like to get a more powerful computer than a MacBook and I definitely need a new external HD, but I really don't have the money for either. I guess I'll finish the projects that I am working on and (after deleting the project files) see if I can do it then.

  • Captured footage not accessable in FCPro but is in Quicktime

This has happened twice now so I know its not just a fluke. A captured video was unplayable - unaccessible even - inside of FCPro 7. It acts like its 1 frame long rather than 27 minutes.
But when I checked the file in scratch disk / captured / proj and it opened in Quicktime and played just fine. Absolutely nothing wrong with it. Except that when I reimported the raw into FCPro, same result - unplayable.
So I used quicktime to export a copy that I was then able to import into FCPro and worked perfectly. But WHY wasn't the captured footage available ? I will not re-render all my raw footage every time I capture something. That's just crazy talk!

Sorry for leaving that out. Its a Sony DVCAM DSR-390, captured at standard DVCAM 48Khz. Yes, it was captured by Final Cut Pro. I've never had a problem doing this before.
