Problems capturing - no sound and dropped frames

I have just begun a new project on FCP 5 on a G4 Powermac with OS X 10.4.10. This is the first project on this particular machine, but am reasonably au fait with FCP.
I am attempting to capture from a Canon XM1 via Firewire, and although I am able to control the deck and play video from it, there is no sound (other sounds are audible from the Mac speakers and there is audio on the tape in question). The capture setting is for DV Pal 48hz. In Audio/video settings, the options in Audio playback, apart from 'built in audio' are greyed out. The sound levels in FCP indicate that the audio is being recognised.
Also, any attempts to capture, whether via Capture Now or as a clip result in dropped frames.
I can give more information if required, but would anyone have any pointers for this? I would be very grateful as time is against me!
Thank you

My mistake, I am actually using FCP 4.5.(for some reason I have the manual for FCP5 ???) The problem was that Speaker was set to off in Capture presets. Thanks for your help, now I have to sort out these dropped frames.

  • Problem with source tape and drop frames with capturing HDV

I am having trouble capturing a tape. Every time I try and capture I get the message problem with tape, I try to change settings but after a few seconds of capturing the capture stops. I know that the tape is fine so it does not have anything to do with my tape. Capture also stops because it comes up with a message saying drooped frames.

Are you capturing to an external or secod drive, right? What kind of drive? What camera?

  • Problems working with non drop and drop frame DVCPRO HD material in project

I am having playback problems with my non drop frame HDV material. It stutters.
All of our projects up to this point have been shot in drop frame. During our last shoot however the Bcam was recorded in non drop. I loaded both the non drop bcam tapes as non drop and the drop frame Acam tapes as drop. All of the drop frame Acam material plays back fine in the source viewer and the timeline. The non drop Bcam material seems to randomly stutter in the source viewer, or causes the system to serve a "dropped frames warning" in the timeline.
Is there a bug with fcp 5.1.2 about mixing non drop and drop frame material in a project. Or is this not possible? They are the same frame rate.
I have exported the non drop clips in a drop frame timeline and re-imported them as drop frame clips - thus correcting the problem. Is this the best solution?
All of the material was loaded thru a kona card as 1080i60 DVCPROHD 29.97
I had no problems capturing the material as long as I used the corrrect firewire setting (ndf vs df).
Anyone have a problem like this? I would greatly appreciate a response.
    Thanks,

The camera can record 60i, and 30F:
"HDV 1080, 50i/60i/30F/25F Recording and Playback capable"
Look at the clips...look at their frame rates. What do they say? Is one 59.94? Is the other 29.97?
You would never need to render if you mixed NDF and DF footage. The footage runs at the same speed, on the TC numbers are different. But, you would need to render if your footage had different frame rates. LOOK AT THE CLIPS.

  • Capture on the fly dropped frame aborted capture - clip gone forever???

I foolishly set up my Macbook pro to capture the video feed live from an HVX200 camera via firewire... THE clutch interview for a client... Lo: what happens but halfway through the interview, capture aborts and error message reads "capture aborted due to dropped frames".
It's an investigative journalism project, with a hostile interview subject, so no do-overs possible.
Clip not showing up in capture scratch or anywhere else.
My question is: has anyone had any luck rescuing an incomplete clip like this? The hard drive was churning, doing computerlike things, writing, so the information is there somewhere. It's just that the "pointers" or "handles" of the clip are gone. I know with IBM/Avid there's an attic where you can get to weird and/or incomplete files - is there anything like that with MAC/Final cut? Or is this setup "all or nothing"?
Maybe someone knows about a program that can recover incomplete data, good for MAC?
I know, shame on me for capturing straight to computer - I'll never do that again.
    thanks!
    Jeremy

has anyone had any luck rescuing an incomplete clip like this?
Nope. The file failed to complete...QT/FCP didn't get a chance to write the end code for the clip, so it is unusable.
I know with IBM/Avid there's an attic where you can get to weird and/or incomplete files
The ATTIC in Avid terms is the same as AUTOSAVE in FCP...it saves a backup of the project bins, not the media. Not sure about the IBM attic...
I don't know of anyone having luck recovering a file that has been aborted like this. And this happens to more people that we'd like to see. Capturing one-of-a-time events straight to computer with no backup. Bombout.

  • FCPX green frames/artifacts and dropped frames

I have been trying to use FCPX for a couple of weeks now, but haven't been able to. I constantly get green frames/artifacts and dropped frames during playback AND export regardless of using optimixed or proxy media. I am importing mp4 quicktime files, in case that is important.
    I am using:
    MBP (mid 2009)
    OSX 10.6.8
    Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.26 ghz
    2 gb ram
    Nvdidia GeForce 9400M w/256 vram
I know that it is reccommended I have 4 gb ram, but I meet the minimum requirements and cannot even use the program! Would upgrading to 4-8gb ram resolve this issue? Or is my processor the culprit?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

You DEFINITELY need to upgrade your memory to 8GB, etc.  Otherwise you will not likely be able to get much real work done at all ... but ... that is likely not exactly the problem you are experiencing now .  Since you are talking about bringing in MP4 files, I am thinking you did not get them from a tape-based camcorder.  If you did, then they were converted to MP4 afterwards somewhere.  Can you play the MP4 files in Quicktime and not see any green screens?  If so then have you tried using the FCP X File/Import ... Files command to bring them into FCP X?  I have used this with MP4 files without a problem.  If Quicktime can play them okay without green frames, and FCP X cannot then the problem does seem to be in FCP X.  Are your preferences set to use optimized media? If so then FCP X will convert the files to ProRes and the timeline playback should be okay.  There are other "green frames" discussions here that you could also reference.  These are just some thoughts.

  • Slow drive and dropped frames

    Hi help!
I've just finished an edit using fcp 6 .. 1.5hrs long / using 3 camera multiclip .. no problems.
I've cleared that out, and this time have a 2.5hr project / similar 3 camera multiclip, and I'm getting error messages every 10 secs, about slow drive and dropped frames!
Nothing except for the source material (which I reloaded)has changed, so has anyone any idea of what could be happening?
    Thanks,
    P

    Pete
I'm pretty sure the USB is the cause of the droped frames, not enough band width and USB don't manage continous flow of data like FW, it sends/receives chunks of info. They are not suitable for video editing and it will be worst with multiple streams of video at the same time.
You must try at least a FW400 drive.
    Hope that helps !

  • Choppy and Dropping Frames with AVCHD on FCPX

    Hi,
I'm having a nightmare problem with AVCHD on my Mac Pro and FCPX.
    So I'm editing with 1080 60p from FS700, NX70, GoPro Hero3 and XR-550V.
Imported without transcoding first, so just a rewrap into QT.
Tried to play a single clip in the events or timeline in this conditons:
    - "Use original or optimized media" > High Quality
    - "Use original or optimized media" > Better Perfomance
    - "Use proxy media" (and did a transcode only for 4 clips to test)
With all those possibilities it ALWAYS plays choppy and dropping frames.
Playing in the QT (PRIVATE and choosing the clip) plays normal.
Playing in the QT proxy transcoded from FCPX plays normal.
Using Premiere CC is also normal.
Tried to ensure that the timeline is 29.97p, same thing (dropped frames choppy).
    What could it be?
    Specs:
    FCPX 10.0.9
    Mac Pro Early 2009
    Original Material in a RAID0 ~220MB/s R/W
Processor  2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory  7 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512 MB
    Software  OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)

Well, it's possible for FCP to find something about either your hardware (or a third party software) problematic and for Pr to be OK with. Premiere has long been more agnostic about formats and codecs than FCP.
Unsure what to suggest. It shouldn't require the latest-greatest ;for example,  we have a four year old MBP, running Lion that can play 1080 AVCHD smoothly… although we set Preferences to better performance.

  • Problems with ListViews Drag and Drop

I'm surprised that there isn't an Active X control that can do this more

be curious to find out if there is - although we aren't really embracing the

Subject: Problems with ListViews Drag and Drop
I am just curious as to other people's experiences with the ListView
widget when elements in it are set to be draggable. In particular, I am
currently trying to design an interface that looks a lot like Windows
Explorer where a TreeView resides on the left side of the window and a
ListView resides on the right side. Upon double clicking on the
ListView, if the current node that was clicked on was a folder, then the
TreeView expands this folder and the contents are then displayed in the
ListView, otherwise, it was a file and it is brought up in Microsoft
Word. All this works great if I don't have the elements in the ListView
widget set to be draggable. If they are set to be draggable, then I am
finding that the DoubleClick event seems to get registered twice along
with the ObjectDrop event. This is not good because if I double click
and the current node is a folder, then it will expand this folder in the
TreeView, display the contents in the ListView, grab the node that is
now displayed where that node used to be displayed and run the events
for that as well. What this means, is that if this is a file, then Word
is just launched and no big deal. Unfortunately, if this happens to be
another directory, then the previous directory is dropped into this
current directory and a recursive copy gets performed, giving me one
heck of a deep directory tree for that folder.
Has anybody else seen this, or am I the only lucky one to experience.
If need be, I do have this exported in a .pex file if anybody needs to
    look at it more closely.
    Thanks in advance.

  • New Intel iMac, FCE 3.0 and dropped frames on capture

Just got a brand new 20 inch iMAC running 10.4.9 with 2G of RAM and over 200G of space. Can't capture more than a minute or two of footage to the hard drive without a dropped frame abort.
Have no problems capturing the same tape to a nearly full Lacie external drive through my 4 year old inverted bowl G4 running 10.3.9 with only 512 MB of RAM.
Does anyone know if it could be because I am running FCE 3.0 on the new iMAC? I've read that 3.0 is not made for the Intel and that the machine has to do some behind-the-scenes tricks to make it work.
Might upgrading to 3.5 solve my capture problem?

I think that article is misleading. It seems as if that if you have 3.0 or earlier (FCE, of course), combined with OS 10.4.9, no matter WHERE you capture to, you will get dropped frames. There are three (3) solutions, and they are as follows:
    1. Archive and Install to 10.4.8
    2. Buy the upgrade to 3.5.
And the newest one, though not tested by many people:
    3. Drag and drop the drive that you capture to in Spotlight's Privacy window. That's in System Prefs.>Spotlight>Privacy.
    I can't test the 3rd one as I have 3.5.

  • Final Cut Pro 7 Frame freezing and dropping frames for 3 seconds...

So, I'm creating a video which leads up to .png files being on screen for 00:00:00:20 and 00:00:00:10. When it hits that first frame of 00:00:00:20, it freezes for 3 seconds, misses out the rest of the frames before continues. What puzzles me is that in the playback window in FCP, it plays exactly how it should but when rendering out into "Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) 1920x1084 60i 48 kHz .mov" format, it plays like this...
It leads me to believe that the frames per second need to be upped but not a cut how to do this on FCP. If this is not the reason for this problem, I'd love to hear from you!
    Thanks in advanced!

I feel that this is your problem. Editing from a network drive is not particularly ideal as there are quite a few overheads when it comes to data transfer. Bear in mind that in a properly set up network users have a restricted amount of bandwidth to 'play" with so as to minimise horrendous bottlenecks and complaints. Additionally having only 1.9 to 2 GB of free space is a recipe for disaster. The drive could fail miserably and as a result you could lose your work. One thing that is useful to know about conventional drives is that their speed drops dramatically as you fill them up, up to the point that they crawl. I suggest you move your work into a local drive, that is one connected to the computer you use, with ample space to space (filled way below 50% of its capacity). In fact, fcp capture scratch, render and media folders should be there.
    Good luck

  • 29,97 to 24 fps and Drop Frames issues + 35mm

    Hello,
I need to know what should i do in order not to make serious mistakes.
I shot a film in 35mm and have a DROP-FRAME telecine in MiniDV at 29,97. My sound is @ 24fps. My goal is to genereate a cut-list to the lab since my final format is 35mm.
I did the reverse telecine and nothing works, nothing syncs. Can anyone help me on a step-by-step on how to edit this in FCP using Cinema Tools?
    Thanks!
    Rodrigo

    Sorry; no underscores:
    http://fattyproductions.com/Sample DV Clip.mov.zip
FYI, I seem to have solved my problem, though again, I'm some of you out there are going to cringe. Basically, I exported my sequence out of FCP using Quicktime Conversion: H.264. Highest possible quality. I dragged THIS file into iDVD, burned a disc, and I have to say, that mix of transcodings got rid of the DV Stream clarity that... well, I didn't want.
If any of you all know of a term that is used to describe this fluidity that DV video (@ 30 fps) has on a television screen, please let me know.

Same tapes Same deck. Also heard some flack about "having to use the Combined update" for 10.4.10 which I did. Don't see dropped frames on playback

  • Export Issues: Green and black flashes and dropped frames

    Hello,
So I've been having in issue in the last week exporting videos in Adobe (CS5, Premiere 5.0). It's happened both in AME and direct exports from Premiere. The sequence settings match the footage settings (1280x720 (1.0) 23.976fps MTS files). I'm using a mini matrox mxo2 hardware accelerator to speed up my export times. The sequences start with 5 seconds of a still image with a simple Title laid over it in Video two (the person's name, city etc. that is the focus of the video) which then dips to black into the footage. Everything plays back fine but after I output the sequences within the first 5 seconds (while the still img is up (a .jpg) there are flashes of green and black as well as dropped frames. It only happens a few times but it does happen in each video, only while that title is on the screen.
I've made hundreds of similar videos with the same export settings, same sequence settings, same footage settings. I know because it's a lot of the same cameramen and I've made templates for my projects, sequences, and export settings. This has never been an issue before this week.
I've tried mining Google and forums for an answer but can't even find other people having very similar problems.
Any help on ideas to troubleshoot this would be much appreciated and let me know if you want any more info from me.
    Thanks!

Thank you for the reply J_Heffernan.
So my understanding of the issue is more clear. The green fields is from a rendered clip, not from playback.
    Please try the following:
    - in control panel, go to user accounts, and locate your account, and confirm its UAC level is all the way down, reboot if required
    - if you downloaded the Matrox driver with another browser, besides IE, then redownload it again, with IE. Once completed, right click the file, go to properties, if there is a message stating its blocked, click the unblock button
    - uninstall the MXO2 driver, reboot and reinstall it
    - go to http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect?iid=dc_iduu let it scan to see if there is an intel chipset driver update availalble, and install it, reboot
    - lets try with a brand new project - select matrox.avi as your capture mode
    - select a matrox HD/SD sequence - try HD 1080i 29.97
    - give a new name
    - place colour bars on the timeline and streach it out
    - now do a file export, use a Matrox h.264 option, and let adobe media encoder export it
    - after it is completed, how is the playback?
Typically you can have premiere and media encoder open at the same time.
    Regards
