Problems capturing some DV tapes

I am capturing lots of mini DV tapes and some High 8 tapes directly from the camera using Firewire. Over half the tapes go in fine and maybe 30-40% of the tapes stop at some point and say something about dropped frames and something about audio may not be synced with video...also when it stops sometimes 30 or 40 minutes into a tape, it has not saved up to that point any file. It does say capturing now, but once it hits this problem my capturing is wasted.
I have tried capturing this on my laptop (dual 2.33 ghz macbook pro) directly onto an external firewire 800 drive. I have also tried to capture it directly onto my RAID.
I am wondering if these tapes which are DV tapes and may not have been stored great or may have been recorded over a few times is the problem or my system.
I can capture directly using the analogue outputs on the camera and into my capture card and onto my RAID or external firewire drive no problem. It's just that when I try to capture with firewire, somehow my system is very sensitive to some of these tapes. These tapes do play fine through the DV camcorder and so capture fine analogue.
I don't see much of a difference unless I blow up a frame of video 300% and then only a little. I wonder if the capturing through firewire is an exact duplicate as opposed to analogue which is a near duplicate?
I used head cleaner on both of my camcorders yet the problem still persists. I turn off all programs and always capture on an external drive. My friend thinks it has something to do with Macs and his windows machine can capture it fine...I'd be surprised if that was it.
Anyone have any answers? Thanks-

I am wondering if these tapes which are DV tapes and may not have been stored great or may have been recorded over a few times is the problem or my system.
It sounds like you are getting dropped frames. This can happen especially with DV tapes that have been used several times and that may have been left in the camera or deck for some time. FCP will abort the capture when it loses TC, so if you have a frame that does not have TC on it FCP will stop and you lose anything that captured before that.
Try this: capture the tapes by logging small segments and then capturing, that way if you drop a frame you only lose a small segment.
Watch carefully and see where you drop the frame, then try logging and capturing around that frame.
I wonder if the capturing through firewire is an exact duplicate as opposed to analogue which is a near duplicate?
Firewire is simple file transfer, ones and zeros transferred over a wire. Analog capture through your Kona card involves digital to analog and analog to digital conversion. So you are right in your assumption. Firewire is the best way to go, but if you must have the missing footage then analog may be your only option. Bbeware, analog will not pass through TC , it will create new TC on your capture.
My friend thinks it has something to do with Macs and his windows machine can capture it fine...I'd be surprised if that was it.
His windows machine is not as sensitive to TC as your Mac. Whatever he is using is probably set to ignore dropped frames or does not read the TC from the tape. He also probably thinks that Vista looks nothing like OSX.

  • I would appreciate some help in capturing some VHS tapes into PP-CS6.

    Aloha,
Just loaded CS6 and my 1st project is to convert some VHS tapes into HD DVD's.  The VHS player I'm using has R/G/B Component video out & HDMI in/out.  My PC video card is a Radeon 6750 with 1 x HDMI (in use for my monitor), 1 x DVI-I, and 1 x D-SUB.  My mobo, a Gigabyte GA-MA78GN-US2H, has 1x D-SUB, 1 x DVI-D, & 1 x HDMI. I don't believe I can use both HDMI slots simultaneously.  I'm not even sure I can use any of the onboard graphica ports while I'm using an external  video card.
So my questions are; 1) which available graphic port on the video card will offer me the best VHS tape capture?  2) what are the capture settings (i.e. frame rate & resolution of most VHS tapes either home recorded or professionally recorded) that I should use?

Usually, video ports on a video card or motherboard are out only. You would need a capture card, or external box to get VHS video digitized into your computer.
For VHS tapes, I would recommend getting a Hauppauge HD-PVR available here: http://www.hauppauge.com/site/products/data_hdpvr.html
It would save you a lot of headaches and make your job much easier.
If you'd like specifics: the HD-PVR has component inputs with optical audio, along with S-video and composite connections.
I've used it to capture many VHS tapes, and never had a problem.
    Good luck!

  • Problem Capturing Cannon XL2 tape to Hard Drive

I am using a Cannon XL2 Camera with a firewire connection to my MacBookPro.
Normally I record directly to the HDD and use the cassette tape as a backup.
This has been working fine up unitl the .7 version.
I needed to use the backup tape version so I attempted to download it to the computer.
It did connect, and I had full control of the VCR functions of the camera.  But FCPX
Captured the footage in very short clips ranging from 3 frames to 20 frame duration.
When I watch the tape in in viewer without anttempting to capture it, it plays fine.
But somewhere in the capture process it is getting messed up.
Can anyone point me in the direction to finding a solution.  I don't even know where to start.
    Thank you
    jac

There are lots of similar reports. I've encountered this at times with earlier versions, but not recently. For any tapes that I couldn't capture I ended up by capturing in legacy FCP. Many people have successfully used iMovie for capture, and edited in FCPX.
    Good luck.

  • Problem capturing analog video

I need a little help here...I have a Canopus a/v converter hooked up into a Sony Hi8 editing VCR so that I can capture some older tapes of mine into FCE. However when I hut the "capture now" button while the tape is playing, the rainbow disk starts spinning and the capture window just stays black and says, "allocating disk space" forever. Tweny minutes later, it starts capturing. Is this a memory issue? I can't figure it out...
    thanks...

    Hi(Bonjour)!
Yes you can capture on the internal drive, but it's not recommended in extended video editing workflow. A dedicated firewire external drive is a much-much- better solution.
    Good luck.

  • Problem capturing DV tape to FCP 10.1.3

New to FCP X and having problems importing the entire tape.
Importing dv tape using Sony SDR-11
    OS X 10.9.4
Processor 2x2.66 GHz 6 Core Intel Xeon
External Hard Drive 1TB (set up for FCP media storage)
Currently the footage is importing in small increments  of 2-3 minute clips and I am trying to capture the entire tape.
Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated as I have been not been able to figure this one out.
    Liza

    Ross
I am trying to import  50 mins or so of a lecture.  One continuous shot.  No stopping or starting of camera.
Fcp will only import small increments of the tape.  The clips are never of the whole lecture even if I tried
To edit them together.   If only I should be happy at this point.
I really dont know what to do.  Every tape I try to import ends up with small increment clips. After the import the message always says tape has been entirely  imported.  But this is incorrect.
I have even gone to the manual and no help there.
How did you fix your problem?
    Thanks for you input.

  • Settings problem, captured clips first seconds missing

i am just beginning to self learn FCP,
see, the settings captured my mini dv tape and cut them into clips when time codes breaks...i think
    using a trouble-making jvc ji hd100
recording at 720p 25p with the motion smooth function turned on
i pressed capture now and right away it goes,
but whenever there is a gap between each clip on the dv tape,
it stops capturing and show searching media,
again when the next clip appears,
it starts capturing again.. after 1 or 2 seconds..
and every clip's first seconds' missing,
and so the clapboard and action call's gone..
i wonder what settings can either capture the whole tape into one single clip or give me back my first seconds
    many thanks

I'm not sure, but I think he means that - even with no break in the tape (no gaps) - FCP is telling him there is a break in the time code. This is a very common issue with HDV devices (especially JVC's for whatever reason). I've spoken with a contact I have at JVC and he said they have figured out the problem on their end and are waiting for Apple to resolve it on the FCP side. Something to do with the way FCP expects to see the time code and the way JVC's (and some other) HDV devices "deliver" it.
The only workarounds I know of are: 1) Use the Apple Intermediate Codec - the only big problem with that is that it generates new timecode - i.e., doesn't correspond to the timecode on the tape. 2) Closely monitor the capture and stop the capture each time this happens. Then, using "Capture Now," back the tape up to the point of the "break" (or slightly before, if possible) and start capture there. You might have to try this more than once in order to not miss anything and you'll end up with a bunch of clips but it can work. 3) The best solution - but it costs a lot more money - is to use a stand-alone deck, like JVC's BR-HD50, and purchase a capture card like AJA's Kona LHe. This will allow you to capture using the analog component input and control the deck via RS-422. We're using this in our studio and it works flawlessly. It also allows you to capture using a different, less lossy codec, like DVCPRO HD.
Sorry there's no better solution (that I know of) right now to fix this problem. I'm hopeful that Apple - with the next release of FCP - will address it because it affects many Final Cut users!

  • Problems capturing VHS video - help please (Elements 11)

I've tried without success trying to capture a VHS tape into Elements 11 for two hours now and really need some guidance please.
The hardware is a Win 7 64 bit desptop and my VCR player is connected to the PC via a Canopus ADVC55 firewire connection, through an S-video and L/R audio inputs. The VHS tape is a Japanese one whihc plays fine through the VCR when it is connected directly to my TV.
The capture process I'm trying to use is "DV Camcorder" but I keep getting an error message in the capture window stating that "Camera settings do not agree with project settings" and that the capture process may not work properly.
To solve this I've tried almost all the NTSC settings in the New Project dialogue box. Sometimes the Canopus isn't recognised, sometimes it is but I get the above error message but nothing gets captured.
I would have thought the correct project setting would be NTSC/DV/Standard 48kHz but i just get the error message. When I ticked the "force these settings for the project" box I got an immediate blue screen of death!
I'm obviously doing something - or several things - that aren't right. I'd be very grateful if somebody could put me straight. All over the internet are articles saying how easy this VHS to DVD transfer is!!
    TIA. John.

Thank you very much gentlemen for your help and advice. I've had a whale of a time this afternoon trying to make some sense of the problem.
I've downloaded WinDV and updated the Firewire drivers. I've checked Device Manager and there is nothing there about dropped frames or timcodes. I've also tried every combination of the Canopus dipswitches making sure that I reboot bewteen setting changes. I've tried 2 different VHS players and also swapped out the cables. I've also found an old Miglia capture device and tried that as well in case the problem lies with the Canopus.
    The conclusions so far:-
    1. Using WinDV with the Canopus set to NTSC I get a picture straight away no problem and audio works as well. BUT the pictures are in black & white not colour.
    2. The Canopus doesn't pass the video through to WinDV with the dipswitches set to PAL - the status light stays red.
    3. So going back to elements 11 I've tried both dipswitch settings. With PAL the Canopus doesn't pass the signal through as for WinDV.
    4. With Elements 11 with the dipswitch set to NTSC and the New Project settings at PAL/HD/Standard 48kHz I get the error message about "Camera settings and Project settings being different" and my PC hangs completely.
    5. With Elements 11 with the dipswitches set to NTSC and the New Project settings at NTSC/HD/Standard 48kHz I get the message as above but if I close it then the "record" button is inactive and no video is recorded.
    6. And those results are the same for both VHS players.
    7. With The Miglia device I get no picture or sound with either WinDV or Elements 11 no matter what type of VHS tape I try to record.
And that's as far as I've got.
Are there any other Project settings I should try? Can anybody help with the Black and White issue with WinDV?
I just want to get the VHS recorded via any piece of software now!
    Thanks again.

  • Problems capturing audio track

I am having a problem capturing from my DV camera into Final Cut Pro (version 5.1.4) on a souped up G4. I made a few changes to the hardware configuration recently, but the problem started prior to these upgrades so I don't think it is related. I installed an ATA drive and replaced a defective USB2/FW800 Sonnet card.
I thought I had a problem with the playback head on the camera when the capture issues first started. I got black horizontal bars on the screen of the camera as well as on the screen when I attempted to capture footage. I also got timecode error messages. I was able to capture some of the tape in FCP using a different camera, but upon examination I noticed both audio tracks are missing small segments of data. There are a few blank spots scattered throughout the footage. The picture is fine. The problem is in the audio tracks only. both tracks in the same area.
One of the camera repair people I talked to said the tape could be bad. Does this make sense if only the audio track is missing segments and the picture track is complete?
Thanks, I appreciate any help you can give me in figuring this out.

Thanks for your suggestions and opinion. I am reading everyone's comments. In order to get the most from this discussion, please answer each of these questions separately so the people who are following it will have no trouble following the answers that apply to each.
I distinctly remember when I was shooting the footage of the problem tape, the picture looked fine. It was not until I tried to review the tape that the problem appeared.
    1. Is it possible that the camera works for shooting but the camera playback head is causing problems?
    2. Can a bad playback head damage the tape on playback?
    2. Can shooting onto a bad tape damage a camera?
    3. Is it possible to shoot with a camera with a bad playback and then use another drive for playback?
Thanks for your help. I do know a few people who are having playback problems, since all the tape cameras are getting old, so we appreciate this discussion.

  • Problems Capturing Video via FireWire

I have had problems capturing video via firewire on my MacBook Pro. It is an early 2008 model. I have tried capturing video using multiple programs, cables and cameras. In both Final Cut Express and iMovie ('08 and '09) I loose the connection mysteriously. It just stops sensing my camera mid capture. I can shut the computer down, programs down and cameras down but nothing seems to work consistently in getting it to work. The weird part is that it does work some times. Recently I tried an auto capture of a whole miniDV tape through a sony handicam via iMovie '09. It got 20mins of the tape then stopped and rewound the tape. When trying it again it read "connection error". I could not get it to work. I put the computer to sleep and came back later. It worked but only captured about 10 minutes then shut down the whole camera and import completely. I switched to manual import and it will now only let me capture about 20 seconds at a time. What is going on? To me it seems like the port itself is malfunctioning and disconnecting the signal randomly. Has anyone else experienced this? What is the cause and what can I do about it?

I've been reading the forums and it seems that there is an issue with the Firewire port in general. I have an external firewire 800 HD and when copying large files or a large number of files the HD gets dismounted unexpectedly. Your case seems similar in that we are both transferring large files via Firewire. Anyone have any fixes for this?

  • No video when trying to capture PAL dv tape w/Sony HVR-V1U camera

    Hello there,
Im attempting to Log & Capture a DV tape with "DV SP PAL" content from a Sony HVR-V1U camera using an iLink FireWire.
I have deck control, timecode, and audio but no video. Instead I see bars for video w/the ominous "preview disabled" band. When I attempt "Capture Now," I receive the follwoing message "this operation could not be completed as there is no video." For Easy Setup, Im currently in "Format: PAL; Use: DV-PAL FireWire Basic" (ive other combinations, and again best I can get is deck control but no video).
The DV PAL tape plays fine in the camera's LCD screen. Also I had no issue capturing HDV NTSC tapes using the same Sony HVR-V1U camera.
I've checked my settings and the usual obvious stuff but no luck.
If anyone has any ideas on what Im doing wrong or things I could try it would be much appreciated.
    Many Thanks,
    Sam

are you sure this camera is fully pal compatible?  Some cameras/decks will play back certain formats but will not output via firewire.  Can you shoot PAL with this camera?  If not, I'd guess you can't use it to capture PAL via firewire.  Might check the camera manual.

  • Problem with backups on Tape

Could you help me ,I have a problem with backups on tape drive .The error which Windows throws is "BackupTapeFile::UnloadTape: PrepareTape(UNLOCK) failure on backup device '\\.\tape0'. Operating system error 21(failed to retrieve text for this error. Reason: 15105)."
Does anyone of you have the same problem.Thank you!

You cannot perform a regular restore/recovery (up to the latest possible point in time), because at this time dropped tablespace is not known to the controlfiles/recocery catalog and therefore not known to RMAN,too. You have to 2 possibilities:
    1. Restore the entire database and recover back in time to before the tablespace is dropped.
This will cause ALL data within the database to go back in time, not just this tablespace.
    2. Clone the target database to a new location, perform point in time recovery in order to export
the data of the tablespace for import into the original database. This causes the data of this
tablespace to be brought back into the production database, not effecting existing (current) data
in any other area of the database.
As you can see recovering from a dropped tablespace needs some additional efforts. By the way you also cannot use RMAN's TSPITR functionality.

  • Problem capturing PAL video into FCE HD

I'm having a problem capturing video from a PAL MiniDV tape. The tape was recorded on a PAL camera during a shoot in India; when I got home with the tapes the cameraman gave me, I was unable to view them on (or capture them from) my (NTSC) Canon GL-1 to my PowerBook G4 running FCE HD3.5.1 (external hard drive).
I borrowed a friend's Sony Handycam and CAN view the tape without a problem on that, AND get a "VTR OK" message in the FCE "Capture" window (though I get color bars and a "Preview Disabled" screen). I can also control the tape playback from the FCE Capture interface.
However, when I click "Capture Now", after clicking the "Play" button, I get a dialogue box that says "This operation could not be completed as there is no video."
I have tried a number of different "Easy Setup" device control options, but to no avail.
    Can anyone help? Thanks!

I'm going to correct myself ... although I was able to capture the contents of ONE tape, after that the problem returned and I cannot capture anything else (even that same tape). So it seems the "solution" was not "FireWire-all-the-way" but remains out of my reach for the moment ...

  • Hi everybody, we have some hi8 tapes that we wish to put onto our apple. however the hi8 camcorder no longer works! is there a machine that takes the hi8 tapes and plugs into the apple. help!cheers

    hi everybody,
we have some hi8 tapes that we would like to put onto our computer. however the camcorder no longer works. Does anyone know if there is a machine that takes hi8 tapes which we can plug into our apple? or if there is a way of getting around this problem?
    cheers

Why not just purchase a used camcorder on eBay?  Another option would be to use a Hi8 to DVD Transfer service such as http://www.memoryhub.com/convert/hi8-to-dvd

  • TS1702 I have a problem with some of my apps what can I do.

I have a problem with some of my apps

Again, we need full details. What do you mean by "do nothing"? Do you mean the app won't launch at all when you tap on it? Or does it try to launch and then crash? Or what, exactly? And is this with all your apps or only specific ones?
We can't offer suggestions unless you tell us the exact nature of the problem. It will also help if you tell us what model of iPad you have and the version of iOS it's running.
    Regards.

  • Capturing a dvcam tape

i am trying to capture a whole tape from a dvcam, and i set an in and out point from beginning to end, but final cut keeps breaking as if there is a timecode break and missing chunks of media in the process.
Ive checked on the tape and there are no timecode breaks present, the settings are not set to stop capturing after a certain amount of time and the breaks always occur in different places on the tape every time i try to capture.
the deck i am trying to capture from is a HDV HVR-1500, dont know if that helps at all, i am trying to work out whether its the deck, final cut or tape thats the problem,

I do not know that deck.
Most such errors are easily traced to the tape. Or the deck.
Breaks are occurring at different places suggests incompatibility between the deck and that particular tape. Let's say you shot on a Canon camera, a Sony deck might not like the head pattern. If you need this done in a hurry, get a new deck or try dubbing your tape from you camcorder to the 1500.
