Problems connecting a NAS to Time Capsule

Hi everyone,
I just purchased a Time Capsule for backing up my Mac Book Pro, and to use as my wireless router. I also have a Western Digital My Book NAS drive that I want to connect to the Time Capsule via an ethernet cable.
I want to use this NAS drive just for extra storage, not for backing up with Time Machine or anything like that... and I already know that I can easily plug a USB drive into Time Capsule.
The problem I am having is that according to the instructions with my NAS drive, once the NAS is plugged into the router (ie Time Capsule) via ethernet, it is suppose to show up in my Finder (under 'Shared') and then I can begin to configure it. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be that easy. I don't have anything showing up in the Finder at all (other then the Time Capsule Data drive). I have tried the usual restarting my computer, router etc... but nothing I do seems to help.
I don't know all that much about networks, but I am wondering if there is something I need to set up in the Airport Utility to be able to see the drive?
Any feedback, guidance or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

The NAS drive should appear in the same place as the Time Capsule Data drive.

Not really. Assuming that the Time Capsule is configured (in the Internet panel, Internet Connection tab) with "Connection Sharing" set to "Share a public IP address", and that the NAS drive is configured to be a DHCP client.
One thing you could to do investigate things is to launch AirPort Utility, put the Time Capsule into "manual setup" mode, pull down the "Base Station" menu, select "Logs and Statistics", then select the "DHCP Clients" tab. Look for the NAS drive there. If you're having trouble identifying it, this Web site can identify the manufacturer assigned each range of MAC addresses:

I have a BT Infinity router plugged into the Time Capsule, not sure where the radio settings are?
They are able to use the network settings of the TC i.e. they can connect to the internet via the wifi through the TC but when they try and connect to the AirPort Disk this is where it is not allowing a connection.
I don;t have the drive shared out at all at the moment, is this necessary?  How do I do this if so?
I have attached the screen shots of all the settings.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • There was a problem connecting to the server "Time Capsule".  The share does not exist on the server. Please check the share name, and then try again.

The following error pop's up as an [OK] dialogue box after logging in the iMac,
There was a problem connecting to the server "Time Capsule".
The share does not exist on the server. Please check the share name, and then try again."
As it happens, a connection to the Time Capsule is established usually, anyway. On occasion it doesn't.
I have a Volume, Data, on the capsule, which similarly, usually mounts, but occassionally doesn't, with access permissions denied.
Any suggestions on how begin to work out how to achieve networking seamlesness?

First, restart the Time Capsule by disconnecting the power adapter and reconnecting it. If other devices on the network can see it, you can skip this step.
    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Network
Click the lock icon in the lower left corner of the window and authenticate to unlock the settings, if necessary. Click the Advanced button, then select the TCP/IP tab in the sheet that drops down. Click Renew DHCP lease.
    Try again to back up.
If you still can't, open the Time Machine preference pane and delete the TC from the list of backup destinations. You may have to unlock the settings by clicking the lock icon in order to do this. Then add it back.

  • There was a problem connecting to the server "Time Capsule".

Hi I have this roblem every day. Every morning I come down, turn the computer on and cannot connect ot he Time capsule or external hard drive. Internet working finr (Airport) but Backup / Time machine cannot find the Time capsule with EHD attached so cannot backup.
The message is the "The server may not exist or is unavailable at this tiem" variety. I unplug the time capsule and hey presto the Macbook finds t again... I am abit confused and I'm sure there is something simple to change but would very much appreciate your help to get it sorted. Many thanks.

This is one reason we tell people not to locate their iTunes library on the TC..
There maybe nothing wrong.. the TC is simply slow to start up.. without any data demand the disk spins down.. it takes longer to wake up than the computer if you wake for sleep or boot SSD.
iTunes gives the message because it cannot access the library within the period set for it.
Ask in the iTunes area if there is a method to extend the period before it throws up the error. Or other workaround.
It is nothing wrong with the TC.. that is just normal.

  • How to set up 6th Generation AirPort Extreme to cable modem as a wireless router and then connect my 3rd Generation Time Capsule to AirPort Extreme as a wireless extender?

What is the best way to set up my 6th Generation AirPort Extreme (A1521) to my cable modem as a wireless router and then connect my 3rd Generation Time Capsule (A1355) to my AirPort Extreme as a wireless extender? I live in a small 1 story house and I currently have the Airport Extreme connected to my cable modem in the living room and the Time Capsule plugged into the wall in my bedroom. I am able to wirelessly connect to the internet using the AirPort Extreme as my router and I can also do wireless back ups to my Time Capsule. My problem is that my connection seems to be really slow! My 1TB Time Capsule back up is only half way complete and it has been 3 days! My computer has been backing up all day and night for almost 72 hours and its still not even 75% complete. I have backed up to this Time Capsule in the past and it never took this long. I am thinking that when I set up my AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule using AirPort Utility I must have set it up incorrectly or something.
How do I set up my Airport Extreme and Time Capsule for the fastest possible internet speed and back up speed?
    Thank you,

AirPort Utility 5.6 works with AirPort Extreme 802.11g base stations.
It works with N version airports.
It will also show details of the AC model but cannot be used for the setup.. mostly.
I purposely got the new 6th Gen Airport Extreme so my internet connection would be a lot faster!
Your network will be much faster when you have AC client directly connected to the AE. Older client will go no faster.. but what is worse.. extend wireless is mixing new and old wireless standards.. guess what one wins.. OLD.. So when you extend wireless.. you have no improvement whatsoever. This whole post is about extending wireless.. so you cannot extend to older equipment and do any better.. maybe slightly better signal although from your comments that isn't happening either.
I would rather not have to use an ethernet at all with the TC and I don't know EOP adapters are!
If you do not use ethernet then you are going to be forced to accept slow speed.
EOP (ethernet over power). Also called homeplug in the US.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HomePlug
Provides a method of networking over power cabling that already exists in your house.
So what your saying is for the fastest internet speed and back up speed possible I should keep my Airport Extreme plugged into my Modem and keep my TC set up as a wireless extender? Then when I want to do back ups I should plug an ethernet cable from my TC to my MacBook Pro?
    To spell this out.
A wireless link to an extended device will go very slowly.. if it is not direct.
So lets say you have a laptop sitting in the lounge.. Your connection goes.. Laptop- - - - - AE- - - - -TC.
That means two wireless links.. wireless has this nasty half duplex and single channel nature.. it can send or receive (Tx or Rx) but not at the same time.
Ethernet by contrast does both at once. It is full duplex.
Wireless can talk to one client at a time.. so if there are multiple items using wireless lets say 4 devices.. then your computer gets a 25% time slice. Since wireless cannot handle multiple simultaneous connections.
Ethernet by contrast can connect multiple computers to multiple destinations at the same time.. all transmitting and receiving at full speed.
When you put all this together.. there are a couple of rules for fast connection.
    1. Use ethernet at all times. Where you cannot use ethernet use anything but wireless.. eg EOP (homeplug) at least to try and get rid of wireless.
    2. Where you must use wireless use it sparingly and make sure it is never more than one hop.. ie never have an extend wireless (repeater is more usual term). Repeater will cause instant slowdown of 50% and maybe up to 75% just because it is so inefficient.
    3. Fastest wireless is 5ghz but it has very short range.. you need to be up close and personal to get it working.
Apple routers however unless you do manual setup I suggest are set to connect to best signal strength not best speed. It will therefore use 2.4ghz at 25% less speed than 5ghz because it is 1db better signal.. this madness means you need to setup manually for the best setup.

  • I can't connect my WD to time capsule

hello, i've a problem, my WD "my book for Mac" don't connect to time capsule usb port.
When i try to connect to time capsule, airport app tell me the following: Must repair the disk.
How i can connect my WD to time capsule??
    Best regards.

What TC model and firmware is it?
WD mybook are generally ok.. but the unpowered type will have problems.. you need a powered hub.
And some of the older TC will not handle all versions of some products.. WD keep changing them around.
It is often hard to figure out what works and what doesn't.

I can Connect my iPhone to Time Capsule network, but I Cant get internett on it??

Download 5.6 utility for Lion.. inbuilt version is hopeless.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Set TC and wireless names to short, no spaces, no special characters.. ie pure alphanumeric.
Lock the wireless to fixed channels.. only 2.4ghz matters.. as iphone cannot connect to 5ghz.
Try 6, 11 first then 1. I think bluetooth may be set to use lower channels.
That seems to have fixed it for most people.

  • OK to connect a Mac to Time Capsule simultaneously by wifi and cable?

I just added macbook to my airport network hosted by a time capsule. Next, I want to run an initial time machine backup of macbook onto the time capsule via an ethernet connection.
Should I shut off airport on the macbook before wiring it to the time capsule? Or can the software happily handle two simultaneous connections between newmac the time capsule, one wireless, the other wired? If so, is Time Machine smart enough to realize that it should use the faster wired connection?
    Thanks!

  • Connected my printer to time capsule how do i get it to work on my computer

i am trying to connect my printer so that everyone can print to it.  i connected it to the time capsule, hoew do i get my mac to recongize it

We don't know.....and you do not indicate.....whether your printer connects to the Time Capsule......
    Using wireless?
    Using Ethernet?
    Using USB?
Would be helpful as well if you could provide the make and model number of the printer.

  • How to connect Brother HL2270DW to Time Capsule wi-fi

How to connect Brother HL2270DW to Time Capsule wi-fi?

    Well,
    1. tried (vide setup manual for the printer) letting the printer find the wi-fi:
    http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/BSC/public/us/us_ot/en/faq/faq/000000/00200 0/000037/faq002037_011.html?reg=us&c=us_ot&lang=en&prod=hl2270dw_all#ForMac
    Didn't work.
    2. Then discovered, by clicking around, under Airport utility > Base station > Add WPS Printer that
"There are two ways you can allow a WPS printer to join your password-protected network without entering a password. You can either enter a PIN for the printer, or allow access to the first printer that attempts to join you network.
Before trying either, brought the printer physically close with the Time Capsule (within 2 meters)
Tried the "First attempt" option first. Failed.
Then, miraculously, out of the printer came a sheet with a 8 digit PIN code on it. Which enabled trying the 2nd option "Allow WPS printer by: PIN".
Entered PIN and Continue, but to no awail.
Final attempt was made by connecting the printer to the USB port of the T.C. That generated a fresh printout with another 8-digit PIN. Which was duly entered, again with no result.
Am at my wits end. Anything else that could make the twain meet and restore normalcy in this all too Apple-dependent house?

  • Can you connect external HD to time capsule and use it as NAS?

I have a Time Capsule which I uses to back up my family's mac.  I also have an Airport Extreme to extend the range.  I have no problem reversing the function as to have the Time Capsule extend if need be.
My wife's old Power PC display took a crap, and we're thinking of getting the new MacBook Air.  Unfortunately this means space will be a premium.  We're wondering if it is possible to connect an external HD to either Time Capsule or Airport Extreme to use it as NAS?  We plan to move all our videos, mainly home video, and iTunes library to it and have the whole family access it from there.
There are few problems I might see.  While me and my wife share the same iTunes library, my little sister totally have different library.  I'm sure some songs overlaps.  Is there any way to consilidate this without having overlaps?  Also, is it possible to still organize it so I only have my current library sync to my iOS devices without manually managed music?
I have a few old HD from my macbooks that just sitting around.  One is 250GB and the other is 320GB that I'd like to see it getting some use if possible.

I can't answer all your questions, but what you propose sounds feasible.  You should find additional advice in this article.

  • I can not connect my phone to time capsule..whats problem ?

my phone is connected to time capsule but no data is transfer,,,whast problem
time capsule is connect to my mac .and i can use internet ,but i cannot use for my phone...how can i solve it ?

Phones are more sensitive to wireless setup than the computer.. also the computer can use 5ghz.. only the latest iphones have 5ghz. I presume by phone you do mean iphone. Andoid phones actually have some wireless bugs..
Anyhow.. redo the setup of the TC.
Use all SMB names.. for everything (SMB just means windows networking.. it is the lowest common denominator.. everything works with SMB).
So names that are short, no spaces.. pure alphanumeric.
    eg. Time Capsule name. TC
    Wireless name for 2.4ghz TC24ghz
Wireless name for 5ghz TC5ghz (yes, use a different name for 5ghz).
Hard disk share name.. Data (that is now default but occasionally different).
On v5 utility which you can still load into lion and works much better than later v6 utility.
Also set to fixed radio channels.. try in order, 11, 6, 1.
Tell us if you still have issues.
Did this just happen with the new firmware update to the TC?
What model TC.. A1xxx from the rubber base mat??
What OS is the computer running and what Airport Utility?
