Problems connecting DeskJet 2542 printer to my laptop computer

I recently bought an HP DeskJet 2542 printer to replace my broken one.
Everything went well on the installation up to the point where I attempt to connect my printer to my laptop, which has been frustratenly unsuccessful.
I have tried both wirelessly through the network and wired through a USB connection, but neither work.
Upon further investigation, I find that the 2540 series software driver for the connection between PC and printer isn't even installing, despite several attempts.
I have repeatedly uninstalled and reinstalled the entire printer software, but even when it says that the installation is completed, it still fails to connect the printer to my computer.
Furthermore....I recently discovered that my laptop printer connection runs through Windows' "WSD Print Device", which has been prompting me via Windows Update for a software update....but everytime I run it, it fails due to a "300073EB" error.
My laptop is an Dell Inspiron N5040 running Windows 7 - 64 bit. Only changes I have made is to double the RAM memory from 4 GB to 8 GB by adding an additional memory chip.
Any help would be greatly appreciated before I simply return the printer back.
This question was solved.

Well....I am happy to report that I have finally got my printer installed correctly, and it is working properly.
It turns out that the problem was a corrupted register key in the Registry folders where my printer drivers are stored was blocking the installation. I had to delete all the register keys in the folder where they were stored, then rename the folder in my spool folder where the relevant driver files were stored to "deactivate" it.
For those interested: here are the relevant steps I took:
1) Obvously, back up your registry first just in case.
2) Temporarily disable the Print Spooler service through the Services tool in Adminstrative Tools (click on the "Stop" button after right-clicking on the Print Spooler listing, then clicking "Properties".)
 3) Open Registry Editor (by typing "regedit" on  your Start searchbar), then right-clicking on "regedit.exe" to log in as Administrator.
4) Using the left side nested folder directory, scroll down to this folder in the Registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environments\Windows x64\Drivers\Version-3
(For 32-bit Win 7 machines, replace "Windows x64" with "Windows NT x86".)
Look for the subfolder underneath where the corrupted driver is located (in my case, "HP Deskjet 2540 series") and right-click and delete it. (Note: you could also do the same to all the other driver folders listed there, but you would still have to reinstall the services after you reboot. That's why you need that backup.)
5) Next, get out of the Registry Editor and, using Windows Explorer: locate this folder in your root (C:\) directory:
C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\x64\3
(This assumes you're using Win 7-64 bit; for 32 bit, replace "x64" with "W32X86".)
Rename the folder marked as "3" to "3.old".
6) Now, go back and restart the Print Spooler by using the same procedure as 1), except clicking on the "Start" button. (If your Print Spooler is set on "Automatic", though, you could skip that process, since rebooting will restart it automatically.)
7) Finally, reboot, and reinstall your printer software either using the attached CD or directly from the HP website.
It may simply be that an earlier install of a previous printer corrupted the keys enough that it was blocking the installation.
Justice and resolution may grind slow, but with a little investigation, it ultimately does grind. Thanks for your help....and you may consider this to be "SOLVED".

I have uninstalled the printer and re-installed it and rebooted my computer. Still printing a tet page but won't print anything else.

    Hi @davifels,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I see that you are getting the error message, "there was a problem connecting to the printer. Make sure it's connected and try again." With your HP Envy 4500 printer running on Windows 8.1 (64-bit). I am sorry to hear this, but happy to help!
For further assistance, I will need the following information:
If the printer is connected, Wireless, or USB.
If the printer is able to make copies. Copy Text or Mixed Documents.
If the power cable is plugged into a surge protector, or directly to the wall outlet. Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector. This applies to Inkjet printers as well.
If the printer can print from NotePad.
In the meantime, please take a look through this guide, 'Printer is offline' Message Displays on the Computer and the Printer Will Not Print: Windows 8.
Hope this guide helps, and hope to hear from you soon!

I  have spent 2 full days trying to print from my computer (also wi-fi enabled) through to my HP Officejet 4620.
I have had splendid downloads from HP trying to sort the problem but no luck so far.
I have windows Vista and my computer is a  faithful old Toshiba Satelite L300 and, I have not connected to a printer before on this computer.  To enable the printer to engage with my wi-fi rovider was easy and successful. It prints test papers great.
Any help would be so appreciated.

    Hello missmoneypenny,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I see that you are unable to print over a wireless network with the Officejet 4620 with a Windows Vista computer. When you try to print, what happens? Is there an error, is the printer not found, does the software not install, etc?
Have you tried the Print and Scan Dr, if not, run it and let me know the results.

  • HP Deskjet 712c Win 7 Home problem connecting to shared printer on Win XP Pro PC

    Hi,
I am having a problem connecting to a shared printer on my home wireless network. The printer is HP Deskjet 712C. When I had Win XP on all my PCs, I could successfully share the printer from one PC and print to it from any PC. Worked just fine.
However, now I have 2 PCs with Win 7 Home and 1 PC with Win XP Pro. The printer is physically connected to the Win XP box. I have confirmed, on that box, it is being shared. When I try to add the printer on a Win 7 box, I select network printer and get to the point where it needs the driver. It prompts for an INF file. I have no clue where to go from there. I have done the Windows Update thing for Win 7 to update the driver list in the OS. I did see on the Win XP box that there's a place where I can load various drivers to the network for different OSs. I'm guessing that's so the appropriate drivers for those OSs will be available when adding the shared printer in those OSs. Of course, Win Vista and Win 7 are not available there. Is there any way I can share the printer from my Win XP box to my Win 7 boxes?
Also, I've tried physically connecting the printer to one of my Win 7 boxes to share it from there, but I have probems there just getting Win 7 to see the printer correctly. I'm using a Parallel - USB converter cable. When I plug it in, Win 7 sees the printer as a IEEE-1394 device instead of a printer. Even when I install the HP Deskjet 712C drivers in the OS driver list, and select the USB001 port, it tells me the printer is not plugged in, but I know it is.
I would love to hear some ideas! Please help!
    Thanks

HI, I have the same issue and recently (1/15/11) posted the problem.
Did you ever figure out what was arong and get it working?

  • Deskjet 2542 printer

Hi there. Hope someone can help.  Purchased Hp Deskjet 2542 wireless printer and am aboout to smash it with a hammer through sheer frustration.... installed it ok and was working fine through Internal Web page.
However, changed laptops and now it will not install,  keeps saying its offline. And  says page not found when i try and accessthe  internal  printer page from my laptop browser (Firefox).
Downloaded wizard from HP-even that failed, saying something about a port?  Tried Doctor thinging also from HP...failed. Tried installing from USB....installed but printing failed. Tried the installation CD again....failed.   Grrr....
What else can i do?  At my wits end, would appreciate any help before it lands in the garden through the window....been up until 5am some mornings, installing, uninstalling, checking, switching from USB to wireless...failing.  Thanks.

Hi, i've done a lot of research since posting original plea for help....i am running windows 8.1 on a brand new laptop. The printer is less than a month old but i've thrown out the packaging (tut!)
After reading through other problems with installs on here, it seems that the correct drivers are not upto date for 8.1 on some HP printers. Typical. I have always purchased HP products but no more....
someone mentioned elsewhere on this forum that they gave up with HP printer and bought an Epsom....guess what....no problems. Makes you wonder doesn't it.
There are endless streams of complaints and problems with HP printers, page after page on other help forums....all same problem- installing.
HP haven't even bothered to reply to most on here.
I even rang HP, .....hopeless.  Shall be taking my money elsewhere in future, as for this sad excuse for a printer....am chucking it in the bath of water so no-one can access my embedded web page details inthe  future then will really enjoy bashing it with a hammer (think Basil Fawlty with his car and tree branch, lol)
Sorry HP you've lost a valuable customer, no more recommendations from me i'm afraid.
    What a waste of money!!
Really hope you get the help you need asap.... but i need the printer every day and this one has failed miserably.  Good Luck.

  • Problem Connecting to Shared Printer on Leopard from Windows XP

    Hey guys,
Just installed Leopard yesterday, and I have a Canon PIXMA MP160 printer connected via USB.
I have set the printer to be Shared, and enabled Printer Sharing in the Sharing preferences.
However, when I try and connect to the printer from a Windows XP laptop, it says: Access Denied, Unable to Connect.
I imagine that this is because I would have provide a username / password combo in order to access the network resources on my Leopard machine. I just can't figure out how to send the credentials, or disable the login necessity if needs be.
If this isn't the problem, or if it cannot be fixed then the alternative is to connect the printer to my router, which shares it via SMB. Now that's fine when I want to connect to it from Windows, but I can't figure out a way to set it up on Leopard.
The MP160 driver that comes with Leopard isn't marked as "Modern" which, according to the documentation means that it cannot be used to install IP or Windows Shared printers.
So my question is, to sum up, is there a way to fix the access problem when trying to access a shared printer on Leopard from Windows, and is there any way I can install and use the printer from Leopard while its shared from my Router via SMB?
    Thanks in advance.
    Edit:
I just thought it would be helpful to say that I'm able to connect and browse through SMB shares from Windows Systems, and I'm able to connect and browse through shared volumes on Leopard from Windows. It's just the printing that's not playing fair.

I had Bonjour for Windows working on two XP machines before I upgraded to Leopard. After that when the Bonjour printer would not work I deleted it from the XP machines and re-ran the Bonjour Setup App. It can find the printer every time, but it will not finish and will give me an error instead.
I've also verified that I have Printer Sharing turned on and the printer is specifically set to be shared. I'm out of ideas.
Has anyone heard reports of Bonjour 1.0.4 not working with Leopard or just being buggy under similar circumstances? If that's not the problem, then I must be missing something. Suggestions welcome.

  • I would like to connect to the printer with my laptop with out using a wire

I just bought the hp 1056 all in one and I would like to see if you can help me print to it without the laptop being connected by a wire.  How can I connect wireless???

    Hi,
Based on its specs, it only haas:
        Connectivity, standard: 1 USB 2.0
To be able to use it wirelessly, you need a wireless print server which is something like one of these:
       https://www.google.com.au/search?q=wireless+print+server&hl=en&tbo=u&rlz=1G1GGLQ_ENAU282&source=univ...
And the setup can be unpredictable. My suggestion: buy a new printer.
    Regards.

  • Problem connecting wirelessly to printer

Hi, I used to be able to connect wirelessly to my HP Envy 120, and then for some reason it stopped working from my Macbook - I can still print from my iPad, and my daughter can print from her PC.  Any ideas?

Hello themaven. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Does your client's ISP require that she registers the MAC address of the device that will be connected to their Internet service? If not, then it is possible that the communication between the Internet modem & the Time Capsule (TC) has not been properly established.
    I suggest trying the following:
o Power-down the modem, TC, and computer(s); wait at least 10-15 minutes. Order is not critical.
o Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes.
o Power-up the TC; wait at least 5-10 minutes.
    o Power-up the computer(s).
The computer(s) should now have Internet connectivity from the TC whether they are connected to it by Ethernet or wireless. Please post back your results.

  • Connecting FP1601 Fieldpoint ethernet controller with Laptop computer

    Dear All,
I was using FP1601 ethernet module along with other DAQ modules with my desktop PCs (Connection using Crossover cable), they worked fine, but when I try to use the FP1601 with laptop computers (using crossover cable) the ethernet port is not blinking also the Link LED in FP1601 is dead too. I tried this with two laptops HP and Compaq, both running Windows XP, I also did checked the ethernet ports of the laptops with LAN link and with other PCs the ethernet adaptor is working fine.
The problem is only when connecting FP1601 with laptop through crossover cable. Am I doing any mistakes, I donot know,
Please If anyone could able to help me out, I shall be grate full, since I have to undertake an assignment to measure data in vehicle, where obviously I could not carry a PC.
    Thanks in advance.

I donot Know, whether I had solved the exact nature of the problem, But I found a way out.
Instead of using crossover cable between laptop and the FP 1601, I used a straight cable and incuded a network switch in between,
    This had solved my issue..

  • Error message/problem connecting 5G iPod to my Windows XP computer (code 28

Whenever I try to connect my new 5G iPod or my Olympus C700 camera I always encounter a problem. Upon connection I get the "New Hardware Found" message and the device is properly identified. However, immediately afterward I get
a Hardware Update Wizard screen which gives the following message: "CANNOT INSTALL THIS HARDWARE There was a problem installing this hardware: (the device is always properly named here)" The message goes on to say: "An error occurred during the installation of this device. The filename, directory name or volume label syntax is incorrect" Sometimes the camera photo download will work despite this message, but the iPod never works. If I look at the device manager, the camera and the iPod are always shown with a yellow question mark. If I click on it I get the same message for both camera and iPod--"Code 28, driver not installed" I have tried numerous times to
reinstall the drivers but nothing ever works. Both of these devices work properly on my other computer running Windows 2000. Can anyone tell me how to get them to work on the computer running XP Home??

Yes, the software on the disc can be used more than once but it is the same software you download from www.itunes.com.
The website has a newer version though.
Uninstall it from your work computer and reinstall it.

  • Printing Problem with HP Deskjet 2542

Hello all, I just bought an HP Deskjet 2542 for my business, and am having great difficulty with it. I'm normally tech savvy, so it's aggravating. When I send jobs to the print queue, they just sit and then disappear. No sound or action from the printer, whatsoever. The printer only prints fine from my mobile device, but doesn't help since I have no advanced options for printing of multiple slides on one sheet, etc. Anyhow - I have reinstalled the software and drivers, and ran the Doctor program - and everything is showing that it is fully operational. I don't know what gives with this. Any ideas? Thanks!!

    Hi scrooge86
I understand the printer won't print from the computer but will print from the mobile device.
How did you install the printer? (cd, download)
Here is a url to download the drivers.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?product=5385254&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&cc=us
Lets find out what the ip address is for the computer and the printer.
The first 3 sets of numbers have to match for the printer to get connected to the same network.
On the printers control panel, press the Wireless button and the Start Copy Black button
at the same time. The Network Configuration Page and Wireless Network Test Page print.
Check the ip address for the printer and SSID. (network name)
If you have a valid ip address for the printer try and access the embedded web server.
Type the ip address into internet explorer address bar.
    What are the results?
Here is a url to get to the run window.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXIRUc_D0E4
    Type cmd, type in ipconfig.
    Check the ip address.
Now check the ip address for the printer.
Do the first 3 sets of numbers match?
Now ping the printer from the computer to make sure the printer is being seen.
Type ping printers ip address (space between ping and ip address)
    What are the results?
Please respond with the information so I can assist you better.

  • Win 7 laptop and Deskjet 6980 Printer don't connect wirelessly

    Hi,
I installed the Windows driver for the HP 6980 printer. The printer shows as being "offline" in Windows control panel. The printer network light and wireless status light are on. I ran the HP Home network Diagnostic Utility and it tells me:
    1. HP software required to connect to the printer is not installed
and then from the "advanced" tab it tells me further that
    2. The HP Service SLP is not installed
    3. HP service hpqcxs08 is not installed
    4. HP service device discovery is not installed
So, how do I get these things installed?? Where do I get them?
Is this really the problem or is there something else going on?
I have Verizon FIOS and an Actiontec router. Do I need to give the printer a static IP address (as suggested by the HP install manual)??
    Any suggestions/advice much appreciated.

    Hi,
Is the printer connected to your wireless network?
A solid blue light indicate a proper connection.
If it is blinking it means the printer is disconnected from your network, temporary plug a USB and go to Applications > Hewlett-Packard > Device Utilities. Follow the HP Setup Assistant to reconfigure the wireless connection.
If the printer appear as connected please clarify your router brand and model in order to better understand the problem.
